Honestly, I loved the movie, but halfway through the story, they did not portray Henry's transformation in love accurately. As per the book, once he faces the prospect of losing Alex forever, he had decided once and for all that there is no return to the old days of oblivion and self-denial. His only priority was Alex and staying true to himself, which is why when the emails leaked, his concern was the impact it had on Alex, not the consequences HE (henry) had to face. Secondly, when alex calls him on phone, he actually tells Alex that he is fine and that he is not ashamed of the world knowing about their love. So, yes, henry in the first half of the story is a defeated, shriveled up individual but Alex's love empowers him to such an extent that he had decided (long before email fiasco) that he will tell his family once and for all that he is gay. There was never a point after that when Henry needed to be sheltered because he was emancipated by Alex's love for him.
