Lion roars are instinctively scarey. One day I was walking through a park where I had just moved. From the forest lining the walkway I heard a roar, and I recognized it as a lion's roar. It was close, through the trees. I froze in terror, thinking 'How did a lion get loose?' Then a man walked by and said 'Oh, don't worry. There's a small zoo on the other side of the trees."
Ha. I didn't know my new town had a zoo. It was still scarey to just hear the roar but not see where it was coming from.

It is sad to see the comments stating how small the cage is, how bad Joseph looks, and how awful it is he is in captivity. What is awful is what Big Cat Rescue rescued him from. Please research Big Cat Rescue. They are going to great lengths to stop abuse, neglect, and imprisonment of these great animals. They further strive to change laws so the animals will not need rescue in the first place. They work tirelessly to make the best environment for these mistreated animals.
Joseph lost his fight against pancreatic cancer in March of 2018. Sadly one year later they lost another lion named Cameron. And within weeks, Zabu his white tiger companion also passed over the bridge. Their story of being kept together and given a better life from the torture they had been living is an amazing one.
Through Cat Man Chris I found Big Cat Rescue and I will forever be grateful for that and for his own videos showing cat rescue, fostering and ways to help all cats big and small. And of course how cats teach us to live, love and laugh.
They're stupid, because even I can see it's a platform for him to 'display' on and I can see the fenced land behind him. People just don't open their eyes and use them for what they are intended... LOOKING.
Poor Zabu died of a broken heart... That was so sad.
@@xoselhket Big Cat Rescue's cages are very large and built in sections with connecting tunnels and doors. What you see in the video is a small part of the cage. BCR is not open to the public like a zoo but they have guided tours with small groups of people. All the cats have several places in their enclosures where they can go if they choose not be seen so they don't have to be on "display" if they don't want to. The different platforms are there because many of the cats enjoy being elevated. Sometimes you can't see the whole picture in a short video even if you're looking. Reminds me of when I was working at a summer camp and we took the kids to the zoo. The age group I was a counselor for was 5-9 (technically it was 6-9, but there were a couple who were turning 6 that summer who were allowed to be in the group).
As we were looking at the lions (and cubs), one of the female lions decided that she had enough of the bipedal creatures being even remotely near the fence since she had cubs, and let out a very loud and very sudden ROAR.
The other counselor and I had to run around to round up the kids in our group because while we merely just jumped a bit, those kids booked it.
Smart kids. They have enough sense to scoot when an apex predator says "SCOOOTT!!!"

He sounds painful, he is almost crying... I feel so bad for him, this beautiful beast cannot embrace mother nature, cannot strike down his preys with his bestial strength, cannot taste the living flesh and blood of other living creatures... life cannot restart! He cannot grow up as a cub again, he can't even see the true beauty of this wonderful world before he leaves! He's life became meaningless...

Almost nothing is more beautiful than the primitive, wild raw power of nature, which is vividly reflected in those beasts... They are born to run across the grassland or the forest, they are born to strike down their preys, devour their living flesh and blood, however they can do none of these because they are imprisoned by humans... Must show this video to lil sis, when she was about six years old, I was in a zoo with her. The big cats had a really nice little jungle, where they could choose to come up to the bars to visit with the humans or hide in the vegetation.
Whenever we were farthest away from the big cats, the lion would roar, so she insisted on going back, because she wanted to see him roar, so we hiked there, spending lots of time waiting for him to roar again, and whenever we decided to visit the other animals far in the opposite corner, he would roar again.
She was so frustrated. This way, I can show her 32 years later :) thanks for sharing. He is quite majestic.

This reminds me of the first time I went to the Memphis Zoo where the lion enclosure is right next to the entrance. Thank you for posting this. He had an amazing call. I wish I could have heard it in person. I didn’t make it to BCR before Joseph passed but I did get to see Zabu and her boyfriend Cameron before they passed. Joseph was my favorite. I bought a key chain so I could keep his picture with me.

Diana Dobson He’s sick and can’t return to the wild. BCR is a sanctuary for previously abused, sick, or dying big cats. Sometimes they’re returned to the wild and sometimes they have to stay. I promise his actual enclosure is MUCH bigger and is full of toys, grass, and other things. Big Cat Rescue has a RUclips channel if you’d like to watch it!! :) Unfortunately, this guy died a few years back.

I always ran to the lion cage at zoos and one I remember was indoors and it actually echoed the roar!!
If you were in a small horrible cage put there by humans, you would roar too.. So many animals in Africa right now are starving because of the drought. The elephants are being hit very hard with rangers having to provide hay for starving mothers who can't produce milk for the babies. The Indian seas are so hot, no rain comes. This planet is becoming uninhabitable for wildlife because of humans. Thankyou Big Cat Rescue for getting him out of horrible conditions. Glad that is only one section of his cage.

The fact that the lion calmed down as soon as the camera man backed off was awesome, clear communication to say “please get out of my face” and after the guy steps back he’s like “thank you” and immediately chills out, very respectful.

Also, let us not be silly. "The wild" doesn't really exist anymore. Unfortunately, most lions living 'free' in wildlife reserves are exposed to hunters and poachers. It's easy to say "he should be free", but the important question is, can he be free with so much human intervention in nature? Big cats at Big Cat Rescue often live to be 20+ years old, I wonder how long they would live in nature before being killed by some stupid person. It's sad but it's true and that's the reality we must act on.
