    An example of Megatron's hypocrisy that still angers me is how he treated Starscream in Revenge of the Fallen. Starscream tried to explain that he wasn't trying to usurp Megs at all; he was being honest and genuine when he noted that, "in your absence, someone had to take command". And then Megs abused him and literally killed some Decepticon hatchlings because of how angry he was at that statement, replying with "even in death, there is no command but my own". It makes no sense for multiple reasons; he was D E A D and literally could not command anything (and why would ANYONE expect him to?), and he served the Fallen anyway and yielded to his command and orders. In addition, he abuses Starscream again later, accusing him of not being able to "swat a single insect!" And yet Megatron couldn't locate and kill Sam either; it took he, Starscream, and Grindor all together to barely handle Optimus in battle (and Starscream was genuinely aiding in that fight, not half-assing any of it). It was irritating to see how Starscream was treated, despite never giving any indication in the movies that he was treacherous or backstabbing at all. Perhaps the most "rebellious" thing he did was explain to Megs that "sometimes cowards DO survive...", and that was ultimately a form of advice.
    Dorito-Boi deserved better (don't even get me started on how gruesome and torturous his drawn-out death scene was). :(

      Funny how the Bay version of Starscream is probably the only loyal one out of the various Screams, and he still gets just as much, if not *more* crap as the backstabbing ones.

    • @dkkanofkash8798
      @dkkanofkash8798 2 года назад +27

      Bayverse Starscream probably received a lot of abuse from Megatron in previous lore, maybe even more than other versions, since Bayverse Megatron was genuinely a monster and a beast to the point where he started eating the sparks of fallen enemies and allies alike to grow his own strength. By the time the movies take place, he probably already reduced Starscream to nothing but an obedient, dependent servant, having forcefully removed any thoughts of treachery out of his mind. We actually see this process in Prime but take all that abuse and multiply it by 10, since the civil war in Bayverse lasted just as long but was much more brutal. Also, after Megatron's death, we see Starscream get his tattoos which he first sports in ROTF. We can only guess that it wasn't some kind of decoration because Starscream was in charge now, but rather a punishment from the other Decepticons since Starscream was the second in command, after Megatron and before Blackout, and he could have been made responsible for both of their deaths in the 2007 movie. Thus, those tattoos he appears with in the second movie may actually be a mark of shame, which I think is really cool.

    • @Hi_Phantasy
      @Hi_Phantasy 2 года назад +18

      Ooooh, I really like that mark of shame idea! The markings would have prevented Starscream from ever effectively leading the stowaway Decepticons on Earth, since he wouldn't be able to blend in with his alt mode anymore. They pretty much forced him off Earth, leaving him with the mundane but important task of tending to the Decepticon hatchlings. Starscream considers that to be his own form of command; nurturing and training the hatchlings - who won't know what his markings of shame mean - as they awaken. That could explain why he seems to genuinely care for the hatchlings, pleading for Megatron to be careful with them and warning both Megatron and the Fallen that they will keep dying without more energon. Showing genuine compassion for hatchlings isn't unrealistic for Deceptions; Megatron himself expresses a sense of care for them in Dark of the Moon. They may be evil from our perspective, but their ultimate goal is to preserve their race and restore Cybertron, regardless of the lives and freedom of any other beings in the galaxy.
      I like this. I like this a lot! :)

    This specific version of Megatron's mantra and surface-level hypocrisy comes from a specific, entitled view of things: He may have been frozen at the mercy of mere humans and facing destruction by them, he may have been saved by 'weaker' soldiers in his army, but it was meant to be, he was fated to survive. If it wasn't his destiny to rise again, he wouldn't have been saved. This takes the credit out of the hands of his own faithful troops, and instead turns them into tools of his own destiny, pawns of his own fate, acting out their parts in his story. And if they play that part and their usefulness comes to an end, he has no compunction moving on without them. After all, he wasn't 'saved', he was simply fated to survive, and they were only the tools of fate to make it so; the proof is that he DID survive.

I don't understand why you people are saying Megatron was ever at the "mercy" of anything when the loyalty of the Decepticons and his sway over them is what got him out of the position he was in. To me, that's power; strength. His influence over others is what saved him, that's just another aspect of domination.

    This is the reason many love the IDW comics, they go much deeper then we ever thought with these characters so you understand how and why they became the way they are. For Megatron he was a miner betrayed by the system and ended up as a gladiator to survive. Instead of complaining or looking for a out he adapted and grew stronger. Through power he was able to not only become famous but us that power to change the system that had betrayed him and his fellow miners so long ago. His war and philosophy were what he learned from the pits and what he know bots wanted to hear. After countless years of war he lost his war and went from the puppeteer to the puppet, After the war Megatron regrets everything, the destruction, the brainwashing and what his armies turned into with some acceptations.
    I'm not trying to sing he praises, I am a Autobot through and through but IDW gave him depth that changed Megatron from a saturday morning cartoon villain to a man trapped by the image he made of himself and inside of changing or going back just as before he goes all in. Absolute evil can be entertaining but it's nice to go deep sometimes

    • @frankmartino2856
      @frankmartino2856 Год назад +2

      Basically, if he wasn’t so harshly attacked by the system he probably would have become an egalitarian leader. It sort of fits how Benito Mussolini started off being a socialist but switched to facism an ideology he created when he became convinced that socialism couldn’t work. I see Idw Megatron in the same light he started off wanting an egalitarian society but he was stomped at every turn then the only thing that worked was adopting the philosophy of gladiatorial combat and applying it to a political movement. Being strong was the only thing that worked so creating a philosophy of ruling through strength seemed like the only true path to survival. In this vein he started assuming that only he knew best on how to create freedom and equality and thought a facist gladiatorial hierarchy was still better than the autobots corrupt senate based rule and caste system. Considering cybertron was under a caste system a hierarchy based society would probably had seemed like freedom even though it wasn’t. So from this viewpoint it would seem like his gladiator based tyranny system was more egalitarian than the autobots caste system.

    Except the Decepticons have held dominance in many versions for millenia. In several versions the entirety of Cybertron and beyond.
    All Empires fall though.
    And All Empires eventually loose momentum, grow decadent and/or begin infighting.
    Heck in many ways the rise of the Decepticons came to pass in many versions due to the previously established regime (sometimes being already Autobot, sometimes just having the Autobots as peacekeepers) becoming abusive, corrupt and greedy.
    There are no true right and absolute ideologies. No perfect philosophies.
    That's why when some effort is put into the writing the ideological and verbal sparring matches between Prime and Megs in some of the better storylines end up both interesting and far from onesided.
    Not to mention both sides in the lore frequently have ended up 'stuck in their ways', fighting for fighting sake and even if one side would win absolutely at the end... it's unclear they'd manage to restore their old glory.

      the shots before and he and megatron became friends before the war due to them both believing that
      the current autobot government were corrupt and needed to change.

      The way I view it is that idw megatron first wanted egalitarianism but when he was put through the harshness of society he became convinced that egalitarianism was impossible, Much like how Mussolini used to be a socialist but then turned to his idea of facism when he came to believe socialism couldn’t work. So from that point while megatron over through a corrupt senate and caste system he replaced it with a gladiatorial hierarchy instead of equal rights for all. This shows how his struggle warped his sensibilities over time. He replaces slavery with a facist hierarchy based system where the strongest expect the weak to submit. It was only slightly better because slavery and caste system was done away with, but it was still an oppressive system.

    A Decepticon philosophy that I enjoy is the Transformers Animated series where Megatron is, in his processor, a freedom fighter, trying to free Cybertron from the "evils" of Autobot "tyranny." It's like he's fighting a just war to retake the planet for Decepticons alone. And he's got a lot of loyal warriors to back him up, especially Lugnut, who is extremely loyal; so much, that he would take his own spark to preserve the cause. And there's no rule but his in Animated, too. He terminated Starscream with the Allspark key for treachery against him. In short, Megatron means business, and will stop at nothing to pursue his ideals.

    The Sad truth for Megatron is that his society will not last when he dies . At best it lives for a couple of decades until civil war rips the Decepticons apart or someone would kill Megatron and start the infighting . Basing the Decepticons solely on power and violence is doomed to fail . The Autobots are flawed but at least they try to do better for cybertron but the decepticons have become too evil/violent for peace to ever be an option .

    • @girlgarde
      @girlgarde 2 года назад +4

      Yeah, that's a big problem for the Decepticons. They're powerful warriors that kick ass in the art of war but whenever their leader dies, they fight among themselves in such a way that cripples their society. What they should do is get all those who want to lead, have them fight it out until one Decepticon is left standing and then he or she becomes the leader.
      This is what happened in the G1 movie, the Decepticons all fought it out until Starscream was the last guy standing and he became leader until Galvatron showed up and killed him to take his place.

    There’s some things that I think are ignored about megatron as the years have passed. The Sunbow cartoon version might have been a one dimensional villain but he was less likely to waste his troops. Sure he abandoned thundercracker and skywarp in ultimate doom but that was due to having enough fuel to revitalize cybertron. However I don’t think he wouldn’t repair his troops and use excuses like weakness to not repair them. He would constantly let starscream live. And yes I know that was dumb and to sell starscreams toy. In the marvel comics megatron wouldn’t hesitate to murder starscream at his first betrayal. But what I’m getting at is Sunbow cartoon megatron tolerated his troops, kept them alive. He had some logical reasons for sparing starscream. Despite the criticism that version gets. That megatron focused on keeping his troops well fed with fuel. He didn’t care about his troops and saw them as pawns. But, he did prioritize their well being and outside of starscream he didn’t really abuse them. I’m not saying he wouldn’t sacrifice his troops for his own life or for ultimate victory but he did treat them pretty well and tried to maintain them instead of wasting them. Also that megatron was an engineer he helped shockwave design the spacebridge sn she built the bodies for the stunticons himself. I think we sorta forget those details about then original version of the character. I see g1 Sunbow megatron as succeeding in conquering the universe of prime was killed. The decepticons spreading through the galaxy. Building an empire. They might have civil wars however. But I think megatron would figure out how to keep troops in line and from betraying. Like how he put the bomb in swindles head or reprogrammed Bruticus to be loyal to him.

    A lot of versions of megatron have too much ptsd to win if he built an empire he’d just be killing his own followers once there was nobody to kill, However I’ll argue he’s more stable in g1 cartoon, idw continuity where he dosen’t waste an skill his troops. In marvel comics he went insane and definitely would.

  • @frankmartino2856
    @frankmartino2856 Год назад

    I think whether megatron could really conquer the universe depends on the continuity I’d argue that in Sunbow cartoon continuity if prime was killed Megatron would have succeeded in building an empire and spreading the cons across the galaxy. The time storm in beast wars represented how fast their empire would grow if there was no stalemate to hold them back, Sunbow megatron was already protection racketeering other planets to get resources by season 2. If not for unicron assaulting their capital and making megatron a slave they would have actually succeeded. Movie megatron seems to be much more reckless,

    One thing I think you missed is why Megatron said what he says in the beginning or your video. The idw Megatron is much saner and more nuanced than the film version, or the early cartoons and comics. What he is saying is he picked the most dangerous twisted and violent sociopaths of cybertronian society to create the ultimate nightmare army to defeat the Autobots. However, once the autobots are defeated many of these warriors would be too sociopathic and unstable to be fit for future empire. What idw Megatron is stating is that once the Decepticons achieve victory the more unstable and untrustworthy decepticons who are complete sociopathic monsters would need to be eliminated, Then he’d have Shockwave breed a new generation of cybertronians who do not have sociopathic traits, These robots would be raised as noble heroic gladiators taught to have blind complete loyalty to Megatron and his cause. They’d only do evil under Megatron’s command not due to sadism or malice but due to not knowing any better than to follow his doctrine. They wouldn’t be evil natured and would probably follow a very bushido like code of honor. The civilization would also be bred to be blindly loyal. Idw megatrons plan was to wipe out all the autobots so he could control the social narrative once he repopulated cybertron. He wanted a new generation of transformers who couldn’t question his ideology because culturally there would be no alternative or criticism of his teachings. They’d be loyal due to ignorance. In this society I think he’d efficiently run an effective empire without failure happening immediately. He’d most likely keep Shockwave, soundwave and starscream alive but would murder a group like the insecticons. Ultimately I do think he would fail when his ptsd like instability from needing to kill when enraged would be his downfall. Once his civilization starts growing it would reach a point where they start seeing him for what he really is, I don’t think he’d maintain his composure in that event. Ruthlessly killing those who become aware of his evil. Until ultimately he will break down and his creations would turn against him seeing him as a monster. They’d then become like the autobots in opposition to his laws and teachings,

Lol but yeah I know this is bit different topic but MECH and Deceptions were similar in many ways obviously human and cybertronian.
    MECH is awesome! I mean an enemy such as humans whom are capable at countering and harassing the auto bots and the human allies. But they were an awesome faction.

    Pacing! Fucking pacing! You don't have edit like it's playing at 1.5x speed; there's a function for that and setting it to faster is far less abominable than setting it to slower. This is maddening. Give ideas at least a half second more to breathe. Does no one understand what pause for reflection beats are anymore? Is there no place in this world for a sense of drama and anticipation?
    Imagine Megatron as a personification of "royalty", oligarchs, stockholders, vulture cronies and the clarity is stark. Starscream is merchants, approved media and politicians; the nobles. The rest of the decepticons are the troops and hardware of the military industrial complexes of the world to be kept busy, employed, obedient and told not to think. Autobots are the wishes and hopes of a better world. Humans are the feelings of betrayal and desperation. Whatever the allspark is represents life and reproduction. That is the subtext, not this silly dissecting words which are nice surface features and representative of internal conflict jockeying for primacy because evil is very much like crabs in a bucket but not the whole story. The true story is not in words, but actions and metaphors.

    There are too many continuities, but Megatron, doesn’t really have a Darwin type look things. In some aspects he believes the strong should lead the weak, in others this extends to him believing the transformers race as a whole being the strongest in the universe and that they should rule all over the other races. He has never really believed that Decepticons that get injured should not be repaired. In IDW he actually believes that all transformers should be free to choose their own destiny, but his ideals warp into the “peace, through tyranny” philosophy.
