  • Visiting the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
    Today's video was a rollercoaster for us to film and put together in a way which was as respectful as possible.
    Coming to Cambodia, we knew very little about Cambodia's history and the tragic events which happened during the civil war. Due to this, we had been recommended to visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum whilst we were in Phnom Penh.
    Now this museum is definitely not for the light hearted and humbled us in many ways. Learning more about the war and some of the atrocities which happened really made us feel grateful for how simple our lives have been in comparison.
    Hopefully we managed to keep it on the positive side for the remainder of the video, but we do think it's important to visit these places and express our emotions on this platform with you all - I'm sure it's a side of us that not many people have seen as we are normally happy and cheery!
    Thank you for watching, let us know if you've visited the museum in the comments. If not, we'd definitely recommend a visit.
    Much love as always,
    Jacob and Emma

    I left the country back in 1979 after I had to live through the genocide under Pol Pot killing madness. Most of my family members did not survive as we were forced to move out of the Phnom Penh City in 1975 to work in the rice fields.
    I've returned to visit my sole surviving sister every year for the last ten years since my retirement from the US to heal the past. It's very safe to visit Cambodia now as the country has come a long way since the prolonged civil war was officially ended upruptly in 1998.
    Be mindful of your surroundings . Be kind whenever possible. It's always possible as life is short to do the things we don't love doing.
    Happy and safe travels from a genocide survivor ✌️

      I'm so sorry to hear of your losses. It was difficult enough being there with no connections to the genocides, but it must be difficult for you at times.
      Thank you for watching and commenting, it amazes us how far the internet can bring people together like this ❤️☺️

    Museums like these are not for everyone. If you know you won't be able to handle it, it's advisable to give it a pass. If you force it, those disturbing images will linger on for some time and it might spoil the mood of the outing. So visit with care!😅😕

    • @DisappearforDays
      @DisappearforDays  6 месяцев назад +6

      Definitely not for the light hearted, takes a little more resilience, but it's definitely recommended in our opinion as it's always good to discover and appreciate a country's history. Visit with care indeed 😅

      Agreed. On my first trip to Cambodia I visited the Killing Fields. On my 2nd and 3rd trip, never again. The museum was just very depressing to see.

    We need these types of museums and monuments to remind us about our collective mistakes in history and society. Without the historical reminders, and if there were a censorship or removal of any reminders, then we will only keep repeating our mistakes in humanity. Stay strong ❤️

    • @DisappearforDays
      @DisappearforDays  6 месяцев назад +1

      Definitely, it's a good reminder to learn from the mistakes of the past and show people how much of an impact it can have on the following generations. It was a harrowing, but insightful and humbling experience. Thank you for watching ❤️

      We completely appreciate they need to make a living, we all do. But it felt like a waste of time that he followed us for 5 minutes down the road when we said we already didn't need a tuk-tuk. Surely he might have found someone else during that time! Oh well, persistence is key we guess😅
