Wonderful video and tips! Your message about optimizing one's routine comes at the right time, as I am trying to juggle language learning goals for multiple languages with lots of other life stuff. So thanks for the inspiration and hopeful advice!

Ty Will. I’m an advocate for step 3, an uncompromisable speaking essay a week to stick to!

Yeah I really like to try and take a week to just focus on one habit!

Awesome 👍 I think the message about slow consistent progress instead of burning yourself out is key

Honestly this seems simple enough but my routine can sometimes be all over the place considering I'm learning 5 languages. But I've built a habit of staying consistent through flashcards and various apps which helps me even when I'm very tired.

To clarify on the TV show / other native content consumption:
Are you just watching and doing nothing else, for immersion and enjoyment?
Or are you pausing and mining vocab / phrasing?
Or do you treat those as two separate disciplines and do both at different times? (What I'm currently doing; i think passive listening without being neurotic about missing words is something I've underrated in the past)

Probably depends on how far into learning you are.
In the beginning everything is new. Your only activity is memorizing vocab and learning how to read, also some grammar.
Later on, when you know 300-500 words and if there is still too much to mine from the content, then the material is not for you. It's level is too high.
At least for me, consumption of materials where I do not know more than 95% of words is a nono and the best way to burn out.
From a guy who dropped Japanese after studying 4-8 hours for 4 months every day.
I feel much better now with lame Chinese graded readers, than I was then with interesting anime.

@S.Korolev I'd say I'm in the middle of things at about HSK4 or B1+ , and just starting to get to the point where free audio is worth something - at HSK3 I still simply didn't know enough words.
Taking a break before memorising the HSK5 word list - just going to paddle around and enjoy the language for a good long while and connect the grammar, speak and write, and see if I can learn some of it anyway through normal exposure.

I would recommend doing a bit of both, but as others have said you need to be doing passive listening with stuff that you can near enough fully understand otherwise there's not much point

@@willhartmandarin So would you recommend leading the way vocab-wise with reading and focused listening, and only use passive listening to shore up and consolidate stuff that's been drilled a bit already?

It was going quite well for a while, but just as I got conversational I had to stop for a bit, hoping to get back into it soon!
