    I loved the idea of destashify when I first learned about it, but then I read the fine print about the shipping. That $5 flat rate that is so great for the buyer means the seller only gets $5 toward the shipping price, which they then have to pay the rest out of pocket on. There is no discounted shipping or automatic labels like other reselling sites provide to their sellers, so if you're selling a heavy piece and only get $5 for the shipping you could literally lose money on the whole transaction if you dont price your fabric up to compensate for that shipping cost, which then makes your prices higher and people are less likely to purchase from you. If they could get a flat shipping rate like the other reselling platforms do, I would be all over it for selling things. It just felt very shady to advertise the $5 shipping but then find out that you as the seller are paying for the rest of matter what.

      @lynellephillips3889 11 месяцев назад +31

      Yeah, nice for buyers, bad for sellers. and they keep $1 plus 15% per item you sell. You do all the work on their platform and they keep your profit. 'm not a good photographer and already have a full-time job. I don't have time to run to the post office every time something sells, you have 1-3 days to ship and must pay for priority shipping, insurance, shipping supplies, labels, and tracking info. Nope, sellers aren't making any money on this, are they?

    • @epicnamepwns1242
      @epicnamepwns1242 11 месяцев назад +26

      That explains the seemingly high prices like a $12 listing for a lot of three skeins of Dollar Tree yarn.

    • @rmorine6394
      @rmorine6394 11 месяцев назад +31

      They do recommend that sellers price items to account for the rest of the shipping. And they steer you to a shipping app that gives discounts (Pirate ship). As a seller, where you get hit harder is if you list say 3 different things and one buyer picks them all, they still only pay the $5 shipping but you have a heavier package to ship for only $5 instead of $15.
      I use shipping easy, and mostly I can stuff a few pieces in a big mailing envelope. I'm probably only making a few dollars per sale. But I figure at least I'm (slowly) making a bit of space. And also I'm getting money for fabric I bought years ago so it kind of seems "free". Basically, it's better to be on the buying end!😊

    I don't know,the websites prices are pretty much comparable to new prices. If your looking for something unique or particular looks like a good choice. There's no thrift in the prices though.

    • @SevenCrowsASecret
      @SevenCrowsASecret 3 месяца назад +2

      Agreed. I've checked the website before and thought it seemed pointless. Add 20 shipping and it's cheaper new. So I'd be paying extra to not be able to examine the fabric or choose my length. I love the idea but I don't understand how they have customers with their current model, even in the US. Threadify was equally unappealing to me for the same reasons.

    Oh this is super cool! Checking it out now. Their filter system is a bit clunky/limited; hopefully they'll iron out the kinks with that as it's a game changer for attracting new and recurring customers. Nothing more infuriating than a crappy filter system!

    Thank you!, so much for introducing me to Destashify. I have hoard of fabric and notions that I have needed to thin out for a very long time but never really had any sustainable options to re-home them. Now I can let them go knowing that they will be going to someone who will be using them rather than the landfill.

    When sewing stretchy ruffles to stretchy fabric, a lightweight interfacing can save you the hair-pulling you experienced. Use the interfacing tape, and sew it on the ruffle as you zigzag over your gathering string. Then sew tape around the bottom of the piece you’re sewing onto. You will love the clean look, and the functionality of it!

    Oh! A note about neck bindings! You want to have your neck binding about 80% the length of the neck hole, I found 80% is usually the sweet spot, sometimes 90% works but I find it’s much too lose. Also, stretching VERY gently near the shoulder seams will help it lay nicer

    Let me see if i can write this tip in a way that makes sense. To install a ruffle : Using pins, safety pins or notches, divide the top seam of the lower tier in half, then quarters then eighths. Then do the same to the bottom of the tier you are sewing it to. Now you know how much ruffle has to fit between each notch or pin. Hope that helps.

    I subscribed to “Carrie Me Away”. I love DIY and so far I really like your family.😊
    I love your pocket plan for the dress. Also really appreciate your plan for the blue pierced fabric.
    Final verdict-very cute dress. The pocket idea was brilliant and unique. It did not need to be reversible for that to be a good idea and even better I love patch pockets but they don’t always work with the fabric/style. I don’t love floppy side seam pockets on the inside of a dress and I think this was a really nice way to do it. If I have a pocket on the side seam, I want it to be anchored into a waist seam. I have gotten my own pattern to do that now but I love that your pocket is really a great answer for stretch fabric. I like that it is firmly attached and usable. I also love that it is made with use of gores which I love because you can make your dresses swishier with gores.
    I wish my brain worked like yours.

    If you actually do ruin something, it is not the end of the world. I learned that the hard way. You got to learn when to quit trying. Cut all the seams out, any holes or marks before running an iron over it and putting it back in the stash. Okay, maybe into a special box for smaller projects or the scraps basket. If you have tons of scrap/small pieces, bag them up and sell/give them to people who do little sewing, like dolls clothes, doll houses or even small pet clothes. I know it tears at your soul to think of virgin fabric going to waste. I'm the same. I think a lot of sewists identify. Life is too short to make things that you really won't use, just to use up scraps when someone else will use it for something they want or need. I love your channel by the way. You are one heck of an instinctive sewer, like me.
    Edit: I adore the turquoise stripe walk away dress. It's so flattering. You look extra gorgeous in it.
    Edit 2: give the cute boy some pets from me. I am of course talking about your dog but the guy is pretty cute too, so...

    Those fabrics are lovely. And that dress looks like so much fun!
    Note on tracing from a garment: nab a pile of old boxes (or one of those cardboard cutting boards) and some cheap pins. use the boxes as a base, then stab straight through the garment into the cardboard. the stabbing into cardboard is why you use cheap pins. if you put paper between the garment and the cardboard you can stab pins in a pattern that'll let you connect the dots. Hopefully that helps.

    Something that has helped me with bias binding (other than cutting it on the bias, yes I in fact neglected to do that the first few times) is ironing it into a curve that's just a tad smaller than needed. I like very thin fabric since I live in a tropical place, but I am not sure how well that will translate to thicker fabric like a mid weight or heavier jersey. Hope this helps at least one person, were learning on our own but together!

    I'll definitely keep an eye on destashify, but as a Canadian I am going to wait and se if they expand to sellers here soon or not. I just know that anything I buy is going to get caught at the border because I never seem to get anything through without being charged.

    Necklines, for the home sewing folks, will always be challenging. The 80% rule is a good place to start, but due to the variability of stretch, it will not be 100% accurate. In ready to wear there are designers and engineers who work out the numbers, then sample garments are made, and fine tuned. We just don’t have those options. The best advice I can offer is to sew it up in a very long stitch until you are pretty sure it is perfect. Then take out 1/2” of binding, and say a prayer.

    This dress is ridiculously cute and cohesive, considering the chaos that went into designing it! I love it so much and it's so adorable - and I love those pockets.

    Thank you for this video. Having a very bad time at work, so I needed you, and your puppy, and the good news about Destashify, and the other two RUclips channels. The dress is adorable, and I LOVE that orange leaf lace fabric, and orange is my second least favorite color. (Brown is my least favorite color: we wore SO MUCH brown in the 70s!). Love ya, Charlie!

    I love the idea of destashify, i hope people use it more often. I don’t sew, but I crochet, and if I had the extra money to spend I would totally just buy my yarn from there, but I can’t because from what I’ve seen it’s almost all overpriced. Hopefully the bigger it gets, the more it’s taken seriously as a way to get rid of your stash for cheap.

    For neck binding, sew a stich around the neckline so it doesn't strech out! Also the binding needs to be a lil smaller than the neckline. Hope it helps.

    First, thanks for the video! I really do appreciate you going through and introducing us to it. And watching you go from fabric to dress was FANTASTIC! So, please don't let what I'm about to say detract from you, or what you're doing.
    I do all sorts of crafts, so the thought of a crafting thrift store just excited the crap out of me! I'm going through a crocheting phase at the moment, and getting reduced-price yarn had me nearly salivating. But, like you pointed out, people need to BE CAREFUL, since each seller sets their own prices. I found what I would classify as obscene yarn pricing on there. For example, I found some "Just Cotton" (a Dollar Tree Brand) being sold in a two-pack for $6.99!!!! Yes, you read that right. Dollar Tree "Just Cotton" yarn, that sells at your local Dollar Tree for $1.25/skein being sold in a 2 skein pack ($2.50 at Dollar Tree) for $6.99, nearly THREE TIMES the price! I also found three pack of Dollar Tree "Just Yarn Tweed" ($3.75 value) being sold for $12.00, MORE than THREE TIMES the price. And a 5 pack ($6.25 value) of Dollar Tree "Just Cotton" being sold for $15.00!!!!! At Dollar Tree's website, the minimum quantity for that yarn is 12, for $15, so more than twice the yarn, straight from Dollar Tree's website, for the same price.
    That is NOT to take anything away from what you're doing. I *really* appreciate the video, and what you're doing!

    It makes it a lot easier when working with stretchy fabric ruffles (also with non stretch) to use clear elastic and gather those ruffles by sewing it to a clear stretched elastic and let elastic gather the fabric as it shrinks back and then add that to a top part of the dress. It also makes ruffles more stable and crisp.

    You are such a dork! I love it and thank you for the info. I live out in the middle of nowhere and don't have thrift stores like I did when living in Denver. There's a little gem in Chappell Nebraska though. I have a $#!+ ton of fabric I can maybe sell over there. ❤ you're awesomeness inspires 😊

    I'm so excited to explore Destashify!! Then the next moment I'm almost ill because I started reducing my fabric stash *last week*! I've gotten rid of all of my satins and anything "fussy" or unusual that I was saving for children's costumes. I still have cottons and findings to go through, though. And I can't wait to see what new things I find there!

    You are so clever! I learned to sew by following a pattern as exact as humanly possible. I absolutely admire someone who can make up their own dress design. The best I can do is to bravely do a pattern my way, but still use the pattern even when I am copying an existing garment.

    I love Remainders Creative Resue in Pasadena, I go with a donation and buy my treasures in exchange. If you are a student, you get a discount with your id and they have a punch card too. My family goes and always finds "something" and we also try different places to eat -I think my son and husband enjoy the food more than my craft treasures. Oh well. Another place to go in the South Bay, CA is SAS Fabrics in Hawthorne. It gets fabric from many sources including from clothing manufacturers and sells fabric either by the pound or by the yard. Treasure hunting again.

    This dress is sooo adorable! And thanks so much for the share of destashify! This could get a lot more dangerous for me fabric wise😂 but if I get myself in gear I can sell on my unwanted stuff to fellow crafters which is the best possible outcome versus it ending up in the bin then landfill like other people on here have said! So thats a win win! Always love watching your creative style flow, you are as entertaining as you are skilled at creating! Bless you my lovely you are a ray of sunshine Xx🙂🥰

    If you wanted to you have an actual pattern for future reference you could simply put butcher or wrapping paper under the fabric when cutting it out and write notes for any changes on the paper. Also it’s helpful to put dates on it for future body changes.

    Recent subscriber here, thanks for letting me know about Remainders!!! I had no idea it was even there, right under my nose. I have some fabric to donate that I really did not want to see go in a landfill, so I'm glad it will be put to good use. Also, thank you for being such a cool person. I always get really excited to see your projects and your humor is terrific and obviously my style of humor also, ha ha. Hope to see more content soon!
    Also, the ribbon on the sleeves turned out so good- Happy accident.
