I loved the idea of destashify when I first learned about it, but then I read the fine print about the shipping. That $5 flat rate that is so great for the buyer means the seller only gets $5 toward the shipping price, which they then have to pay the rest out of pocket on. There is no discounted shipping or automatic labels like other reselling sites provide to their sellers, so if you're selling a heavy piece and only get $5 for the shipping you could literally lose money on the whole transaction if you dont price your fabric up to compensate for that shipping cost, which then makes your prices higher and people are less likely to purchase from you. If they could get a flat shipping rate like the other reselling platforms do, I would be all over it for selling things. It just felt very shady to advertise the $5 shipping but then find out that you as the seller are paying for the rest of matter what.
Yeah, nice for buyers, bad for sellers. and they keep $1 plus 15% per item you sell. You do all the work on their platform and they keep your profit. 'm not a good photographer and already have a full-time job. I don't have time to run to the post office every time something sells, you have 1-3 days to ship and must pay for priority shipping, insurance, shipping supplies, labels, and tracking info. Nope, sellers aren't making any money on this, are they?
They do recommend that sellers price items to account for the rest of the shipping. And they steer you to a shipping app that gives discounts (Pirate ship). As a seller, where you get hit harder is if you list say 3 different things and one buyer picks them all, they still only pay the $5 shipping but you have a heavier package to ship for only $5 instead of $15. I use shipping easy, and mostly I can stuff a few pieces in a big mailing envelope. I'm probably only making a few dollars per sale. But I figure at least I'm (slowly) making a bit of space. And also I'm getting money for fabric I bought years ago so it kind of seems "free". Basically, it's better to be on the buying end!😊
Thank you!, so much for introducing me to Destashify. I have hoard of fabric and notions that I have needed to thin out for a very long time but never really had any sustainable options to re-home them. Now I can let them go knowing that they will be going to someone who will be using them rather than the landfill.
I don't sew, but I crochet. I usually watch RUclips while crocheting and a few weeks ago RUclips recommended one of your videos. I subscribed right after that first video. I absolutely enjoy your chaos / vibe / energy, which is why I keep watching your videos, even though I know absolutely nothing about sewing 😁
Thanks for the shout out! I added that beautiful white sheet to the bag at the last minute and I’m glad I did. Can’t wait to see what you can make from fabric that I liked in the moment. 😂❤️
Your sister is one very talented young lady, I just love how she has just jumped in at the deep end, sink or swim and just gone for it❤️❤️she reminded me so much of me Mom who use to teach dressmaking years ago, she always told her students that there was no such thing as a mistake, just a lesson on how something is not done. 😹😹😹
thanks to your previous big remainders haul i found out that theres like 5 crafting thrift stores about an hour south of where i live! i haven't had a chance to go yet, but i'm super excited to check them out! thanks for being an advocate and a voice for crafting thrift stores
@@ThatisSewSilvia i'm not in Europe, but there might be some there! i had to change up my search terms to find them around me, so maybe try varying what you're searching and see if you come up with anything! It seems as tho here in the US the thrifting craft stores are more likely to be found near big cities, so you might have better luck looking that way
I get the “Little House on the Prairie” vibes because it resembles Laura and Mary’s church/fancy dresses. But at the same time I also see that hospital gown
That fabric is the CUTEST! Love that you keep going even if stuff doesn't turn out the way you think and come up with creative options. Those ribbon ties are now a main feature! Had to laugh when chaos ensued bc same here
Charlie-girl, OhEmGee! I absolutely love your creation so much. I wanna call it "the Charlie" dress. It is so you. Cute as a button. The side triangle & pockets so cool. The blue ruffle passes the super swoosh test. This one might be my favorite so far, although I seem to always that, hehe hUgz from Ohio, Lee
When sewing stretchy ruffles to stretchy fabric, a lightweight interfacing can save you the hair-pulling you experienced. Use the interfacing tape, and sew it on the ruffle as you zigzag over your gathering string. Then sew tape around the bottom of the piece you’re sewing onto. You will love the clean look, and the functionality of it!
Oh this is super cool! Checking it out now. Their filter system is a bit clunky/limited; hopefully they'll iron out the kinks with that as it's a game changer for attracting new and recurring customers. Nothing more infuriating than a crappy filter system!
Oh! A note about neck bindings! You want to have your neck binding about 80% the length of the neck hole, I found 80% is usually the sweet spot, sometimes 90% works but I find it’s much too lose. Also, stretching VERY gently near the shoulder seams will help it lay nicer
I subscribed to “Carrie Me Away”. I love DIY and so far I really like your family.😊 I love your pocket plan for the dress. Also really appreciate your plan for the blue pierced fabric. Final verdict-very cute dress. The pocket idea was brilliant and unique. It did not need to be reversible for that to be a good idea and even better I love patch pockets but they don’t always work with the fabric/style. I don’t love floppy side seam pockets on the inside of a dress and I think this was a really nice way to do it. If I have a pocket on the side seam, I want it to be anchored into a waist seam. I have gotten my own pattern to do that now but I love that your pocket is really a great answer for stretch fabric. I like that it is firmly attached and usable. I also love that it is made with use of gores which I love because you can make your dresses swishier with gores. I wish my brain worked like yours.
Im only part way through and im just screaming over how good some of the fabrics you got were. I am def checking out destashify since I have stuff I want to buy or get rid of. Also im jealous of the lemon print fabric since im trying to collect a bunch of fruit print fabric to make a fruit salad patchwork dress.
Yes! I have a treasure trove of fabric to donate that I've been hanging onto because I was looking for a good home for it. Sounds like this is it. Thanks. 😀
I should not know about Destashify! 😅 I'm currently on a fabric buying hold as I have 6 large storage totes of fabric. Chronic illness sucks! But I'm slowly getting back into sewing. Thank you for this amazing bit of chaos. You made doing some dishes so much more enjoyable. ❤
LOL! I work down the street from Remainders - I have to drive home in the opposite direction just so I am not tempted to stop and “look”.😉 Now I am thinking I ought to give Destashify a go! Thanks!!!
I didn't even watch the video until I went to explore. Thank you for letting us know about this site. I was about to post a bunch of patterns on eBay but this seems like a much better option.
I freaking LOVE Remainders in Pasadena. I'm about an hour away from Pas, in the San Berdoo mountains, but sheesh, it's worth the drive any day. But isn't it nice that you've found an online store for everyone not lucky enough to be close to Pasadena. Thanks for sharing. Your chaos is delightful.
I immediately thought of a fall table cloth, maybe with light brown or yellow under it for the leaf lace. I sew clothes, household stuff, pillows, etc. so my ideas can go crazy. Or an over lay on a dress?
I paused your video to pop over and look at DESTASHIFY and what FUN! I LOVE this idea! I have POUNDS of excess yarn, buttons, fabric and books and had no idea how I'd whittle it down. Suddenly, I have possibilities! Thanks for bringing this to us! ❤❤
I finally made a trip to Remainders yesterday. I've lived in the San Gabriel Valley my whole life, and didn't know about that store till I saw one of your videos about it. Of course, now that I'm in Rancho! My friend and I spent hours going through bins. And now, you tell me about an online store? You are going to become my husband's arch nemesis!
its really sweet that you have created this channel... let's inspire people to also recycle or reuse those plastic bags rather than throwing them away.
This dress is ridiculously cute and cohesive, considering the chaos that went into designing it! I love it so much and it's so adorable - and I love those pockets.
You truly have vision. When you picked out the fabrics and told us your plan I was thinking "oh no, why!" (forever the sceptic), but then it came together and I did not expect to love it so much! Even down to the way the ribbons tie in the ruffle! Probably my favourite project so far!! You look so lovely!
I'm a quilter who is transitioning into clothing, and I subbed to your sister AS SOON AS I SAW that she ALSO uses a Janome machine!! I don't see a lot of them out there in the clothing costubers!! ❤❤
I don't know, the websites prices are pretty much comparable to new prices. If your looking for something unique or particular looks like a good choice. There's no thrift in the prices though.
Agreed. I've checked the website before and thought it seemed pointless. Add 20 shipping and it's cheaper new. So I'd be paying extra to not be able to examine the fabric or choose my length. I love the idea but I don't understand how they have customers with their current model, even in the US. Threadify was equally unappealing to me for the same reasons.
make yourself a paper pattern from any garment you like then you can copy it as much as you like !! I say that as someone who prefers to self draft but it is useful when you have a shape you like enough to make multiples of. love how the sleeves turned out
You are so clever! I learned to sew by following a pattern as exact as humanly possible. I absolutely admire someone who can make up their own dress design. The best I can do is to bravely do a pattern my way, but still use the pattern even when I am copying an existing garment.
Thank you for sharing Destashify, I've checked it out and have shared it with friends already. Also, I live about two miles down the street from Remnants, they are a total blast, the prices and odd selection of things can't be beat, I totally get lost in the button bins, and the volunteers there are just lovely to boot!!
I feel so normal after watching how you sew. I wing it now as I don't buy patterns and often don't know what I'm doing. Like you I have a background in sewing alterations of ladies clothes, so I know how they fit together, etc. Love your channel.
I just love you. You have given me the inspiration to just sew. I'm the type that has to measure and make sure things are perfect. Well this dress I'm working on now I haven't been that way. I'm winging it. I did use a pattern but I've changed it a bit and made it my own. Thanks for being you and bringing joy to us
You provide entertainment and inspiration! It's so fun to see your way to approach a project and just making something from scratch without a patten make it feel like it doesn't have to be perfect, it can be a successful result any way
Something that has helped me with bias binding (other than cutting it on the bias, yes I in fact neglected to do that the first few times) is ironing it into a curve that's just a tad smaller than needed. I like very thin fabric since I live in a tropical place, but I am not sure how well that will translate to thicker fabric like a mid weight or heavier jersey. Hope this helps at least one person, were learning on our own but together!
Bro I am AGOG!!! These big project videos are so motivating, it’s giving me a second wind to go back and finally finish my fall season projects. Iconic spooky content as always :)
I love a person who can fix on the fly! Great video! The dress turned out specacular! And thanks for the Destashify online link! I have a ton of fabric, but honestly, I will never use it all.
If you actually do ruin something, it is not the end of the world. I learned that the hard way. You got to learn when to quit trying. Cut all the seams out, any holes or marks before running an iron over it and putting it back in the stash. Okay, maybe into a special box for smaller projects or the scraps basket. If you have tons of scrap/small pieces, bag them up and sell/give them to people who do little sewing, like dolls clothes, doll houses or even small pet clothes. I know it tears at your soul to think of virgin fabric going to waste. I'm the same. I think a lot of sewists identify. Life is too short to make things that you really won't use, just to use up scraps when someone else will use it for something they want or need. I love your channel by the way. You are one heck of an instinctive sewer, like me. Edit: I adore the turquoise stripe walk away dress. It's so flattering. You look extra gorgeous in it. Edit 2: give the cute boy some pets from me. I am of course talking about your dog but the guy is pretty cute too, so...
Those fabrics are lovely. And that dress looks like so much fun! Note on tracing from a garment: nab a pile of old boxes (or one of those cardboard cutting boards) and some cheap pins. use the boxes as a base, then stab straight through the garment into the cardboard. the stabbing into cardboard is why you use cheap pins. if you put paper between the garment and the cardboard you can stab pins in a pattern that'll let you connect the dots. Hopefully that helps.
Thank you for this video. Having a very bad time at work, so I needed you, and your puppy, and the good news about Destashify, and the other two RUclips channels. The dress is adorable, and I LOVE that orange leaf lace fabric, and orange is my second least favorite color. (Brown is my least favorite color: we wore SO MUCH brown in the 70s!). Love ya, Charlie!
I'm so excited to explore Destashify!! Then the next moment I'm almost ill because I started reducing my fabric stash *last week*! I've gotten rid of all of my satins and anything "fussy" or unusual that I was saving for children's costumes. I still have cottons and findings to go through, though. And I can't wait to see what new things I find there!
This dress is so adorable! Not my style at all, but I am totally in love with it, and it looks so cute on you. Thanks for the heads up for Destashify. I have SO MUCH YARN and SO MANY CROCHET SETS. I'm so glad I ran across your channel!
That’s a great dress! I’ve seen a few RUclipsrs using Destashify, and I intend to, once I’ve worked through some more of my stash. 😄 Thanks for reminding me of Remainders. I’m close enough to check it out. There’s a newish place in Chatsworth, CA, in my new area, the north valley. It’s a nonprofit fabric thrift store and community sewing spot with free quilt classes for beginners. It’s called Quilting 4 Community and it’s a great resource.
I wasn't sure about the blue frill on the bottom when you first showed it in the planning stages, but I love how the dress turned out! This dress is super cute and I might just have to steal the design myself
Omg,I'm watching this and am sooo excited for your fabric purchase ☺️ my husband is looking at me like I'm crazy😂,we need an online fabric store like destashify here in South Africa.🇿🇦 Thank you for sharing 😊
You are such a dork! I love it and thank you for the info. I live out in the middle of nowhere and don't have thrift stores like I did when living in Denver. There's a little gem in Chappell Nebraska though. I have a $#!+ ton of fabric I can maybe sell over there. ❤ you're awesomeness inspires 😊
Thank you for the info on destashify. I literally stopped, joined and bought fabric, and then watched the rest of your video. Your dress turned out adorable!
I cannot wait for Destashify to go international! Germany is in desperate need of access to thrifted materials. We have plenty thrift shops for clothes, furniture and decorations. But crafting materials are a rare find still.
Idea for ruffle on ruffle: once you get both pieces the length you want them (remember seam allowances), straight stitch through each piece separately on the lines of the ruffles. That should keep the two from stretching while you sew them together. I'm one of the ex- crazies that made Renaissance gowns for myself. Now I do quilts and wall hangings for the house when I'm not feeding chickens or yelling at large goats not to eat the chicken or dog food!
I wish I knew about this 3 years ago when I had to get rid of most of my moms stash. She has GORGEOUS fabric and notions but I just didn’t have the space and no one I know sews so I had to donate it but it probably went in the trash.
Recent subscriber here, thanks for letting me know about Remainders!!! I had no idea it was even there, right under my nose. I have some fabric to donate that I really did not want to see go in a landfill, so I'm glad it will be put to good use. Also, thank you for being such a cool person. I always get really excited to see your projects and your humor is terrific and obviously my style of humor also, ha ha. Hope to see more content soon! Also, the ribbon on the sleeves turned out so good- Happy accident.
This dress is sooo adorable! And thanks so much for the share of destashify! This could get a lot more dangerous for me fabric wise😂 but if I get myself in gear I can sell on my unwanted stuff to fellow crafters which is the best possible outcome versus it ending up in the bin then landfill like other people on here have said! So thats a win win! Always love watching your creative style flow, you are as entertaining as you are skilled at creating! Bless you my lovely you are a ray of sunshine Xx🙂🥰
That explains the seemingly high prices like a $12 listing for a lot of three skeins of Dollar Tree yarn.
The sellers are at choice, right?
the exact reason why ebay got so expensive
Your chaos provides relatable enjoyment, and that my level of sewing can still get me something I like.

That dress is so Minnie Pearl, it should not be this cute! I mean, Minnie Pearl is cute, but it's a very specialized cute.
Love it!
Oh, how sweet it got🥰🤩! And the Pockets are amaaaaaaazing! Must have/ make some alike❤️. Thaaaaaank you for sharing❤
Absolutely adorable dress! Love those pockets!
First time enjoying watching anyone do this.i could totally fabric shop with you. I had a full conversation withthis video.😂
OMG that dress is GREAT! I love it! And that side pocket is such a good idea.
I just taught my friend how to sew, we have been looking for something like this!! Thank you
Those fabrics are lovely.
I picked up a big cork bulletin board at a thrift store, I use it like you mentioned for the cardboard.
Too Fun! Your perseverance paid off. Beautiful and fun dress. I will check out Destashify thanks
Thanks for another hilarious video, you made my day! It is cold and wet In the UK and you brighten my day!
I love the dress you made! So cute! Just found you and will watch again! Great ingenuity!
The side triangles and the blue ruffle make the dress special. The patterned top provides the foundational contrast.👍
You are so cute. Your dress came out so cute. Thanks for the share. I shared it with my brother. We are both crafters and thrifting is a great option.
That dreas is SUPER CUTE! I love how the top of the pocket makes a bar between the two print pieces. That ruffle is so perfect! Wow! Nice!
Second to the last fabric, the blue one, is a calico. Thank you for turning us on to Destashify.
Oo that's super close to me! I'll definitely check it out!
Oh my gosh that dress 😍😍😍😍 Sooo cute!!!!!!!
I’m so glad to have discovered this video because I have so many remnants from when I made and sold fabric masks back in 2020-2021.
so excited about this!! just decided to get rid of my stash of 18 in doll patters. i have about 45
Oo where are you listing, if you don't mind?
Destashify sounds awesome! I love your winging it! 😂
I wasn't sure about the blue frill on the bottom when you first showed it in the planning stages, but I love how the dress turned out! This dress is super cute and I might just have to steal the design myself
Thank you so much for sharing! I am with the many that wish there was a crafting thrift store closer to me!
Omg,I'm watching this and am sooo excited for your fabric purchase ☺️ my husband is looking at me like I'm crazy😂,we need an online fabric store like destashify here in South Africa.🇿🇦 Thank you for sharing 😊
Looks like enough flannel to back a quilt...love flannel for the backs of quilts.
That hot air balloon material is beautiful and totally matches the aesthetic for your room! pillow covers?
For the neckline... Try measuring the opening and take 80% of the length, 75 for super stretchy material. Never had a problem. 😁
Hope they can expand for Canadian sellers too! Such a good idea!
I love that it's reversible. Great job
The dress is absolutely adorable!!! I wish I had your creativity!
Omg, that dress is so cute, definitely going on my list of future projects!
The pocket godets are genius ❤
You are such a dork! I love it and thank you for the info. I live out in the middle of nowhere and don't have thrift stores like I did when living in Denver. There's a little gem in Chappell Nebraska though. I have a $#!+ ton of fabric I can maybe sell over there. ❤ you're awesomeness inspires 😊
Thank you for the info on destashify. I literally stopped, joined and bought fabric, and then watched the rest of your video.
Your dress turned out adorable!
I live in canada and was thinking I wish we had something like a craft thrifting store :)
I love the pocket idea. I have to try that on my next skirt. Thx
It's a fun dress.
I love flannel. Especially cotton flannel.
I personally like to buy my fabric in big mystery boxes of remnants from fabric stores to mess around with.
I don't know if you know about it or use it, but look into a walking foot for sewing stretchy fabrics? Might prevent ruffle disaster next time.
I cannot wait for Destashify to go international! Germany is in desperate need of access to thrifted materials. We have plenty thrift shops for clothes, furniture and decorations. But crafting materials are a rare find still.
I gasped aloud at 07:48 - I know that fabric! I made a button-down shirt from it in high school! I wonder if I still have it somewhere...
I don’t know what Goodwill does with fabric donations, I never see any for purchase. I do occasionally see a few notions though.
Also, the ribbon on the sleeves turned out so good- Happy accident.
mish-mashing patterns = DIY sewing stress-fun! 😭🥰
Aw thank you so much - comments like this are my ray of sunshine!
