what I like from minami is theres is Lots of emotions in her voice. when she says "Minesho!" and she goes from whispering to a high pitched vocal now only is she in control of it. at the very end of the high pitch you can each a small graps on the false vocal cords withs creates a vibrato in the voice. which is a sound we mostly hear when people are angry or very sad.
Minami was the one that gave me a crush on Japanes music and Ado made me fall in love with it. And you know what's so amazing about this song? It's the OP of an anime of an infamous manga that later on crashed and burned. But because it's just so good, everyone in the comment section of the MV just appreciates Minami and the song. None talks about the anime. It's the only immortal anime song I know that doesn't get associated with the anime from which it originated.
Just for fun I decided to just check the ratio between how many MAL users have seen the anime vs how many views the music video has and for Minami crying for rain it's about 500k MAL users vs over 200 million views on the music video... For Uchiage Hanabi it's only like 130K MAL users vs almost 600 million views on the music video lol
@@gildedphoenix It was quite the opposite. DG was extremely big back then and the anime was just a there to be there, like, any big manga must have an adaptation. Trash as it was, it was the reason many got to know Minami, myself included. And for that, I'm really grateful to whoever decided to hire her to do the OP. In fact, the man who you quoted also discovered Minami because of that anime.
I was just at her concert in Malaysia yesterday and when she sang this song, the whole crowd went bonkers. And yes, she hits all these great notes live and it was awestruck
You mentioned the breathing!!!!! For me it's one of the things in japanese music that is SO different from pretty much all western music (where breathing is usually completely deleted in post-production), and Minami specially "abuses" this in the best way possible as you mention as part of the song itself. Without the breathing, the "emotion" of the song would not be the same, it's just that "despair" sound that fits so well with the mood of the song.
yeah.your comment here made me think about all other Japanese singers.yes many of them incorporating the breath sound in their singing and it sounds so nice and gives more feel to the songs
Yes fr, 4 years ago i went through a bad breakup plus tough energies in my family and struggled a lot with my emotions, not letting them out. I out of coincidence stumbled across Minami back then and i started crying for the first time after all that and listened to more of her and since then, she is not the one i listen to the most, but still my by far favorite singer. Something about her voice makes me so emotional and feel so connected to her emotions, and better connected to my own emotions through hers. It is insane what music can do...
What is interesting is in the bridge when you notice the intentionality of the lack/presence and placement of breaths; the lyrics are actually ”吸って ”- (sutte) to breathe in or inhale, and then ”吐いた” - (haita) to exhale or breathe out [and the repetition of these actions]. So not only are the performance and production intentional, but so are the lyrics, playing into that element as it was most likely planned the whole way through as a theme of the song, and thus used as a synchronistic rhythmic element.
Definitely not something I would have ever listened to on my own. Now I'm super intrigued and am going to look up some more by her. Thanks for sharing Chris!

A lot of it really hits hard just because of how shrill and raw it is. The singer just sounds incredibly emotive like she's putting herself in the shoes of a character suffering through anguish. Really great analysis video, you pointed out a lot more than I would've picked up on!
She is my favorite artist, alongside ADO nowadays. All of her songs are insane, but you must check out "Hollowness" :D Oh, and if you do, do it with lyrics on :D Ps: your channel is amazing!

Something to add onto the impact of this song, if you understand some japanese and how it works you realize combined with her vocal ability, this is probably one of the most artistic songs ever created. She plays with words in such a way like shes Shakespeare, the words she uses and how she sings them is absolute insanity. That song deserves the 200 mill views it has, hopefully 1 billion one day. PS the actual japanese title doesnt really translate well, the way she worded it is very poetic and strange, more like "Thirst for rain".

Woot. I knew this would be a great analysis! I still think my favorite part of the song is when she says "Mo ii" right before the chorus. For reference, it's used to mean "enough!" or "that's enough!" like when something reaches a breaking point. That desperation that you mentioned really comes out I think
2:07 Wow, I had never realized this, it's so cool! Really higlights that different vocalists have their own little quirks in their singing that makes it theirs, it's very nice. Thank you for the video!
All the dynamics she does in this song are done with the full intention of transmitting passion and sensuality and believe me, she achieves it perfectly. I love this song, I repeat it and repeat it, you don't know how much, I envy her in a good way, because she has the vocal ability that I would like to have, and all the discipline and dedication that she has put into her voice and to her career is demonstrated. First time here since i love KAWAKI NO AMEKU(crying for rain) and the first words out of your mouth are “ADO”. Insta subbed. This channel is exactly what i was looking for. Thank you so much for showcasing this expertise and explaining how these amazing techniques are executed. Edit: I also appreciate when you mention playfullness. Especially when she growls “hanpa dake iya!!!” In the pre-chorus and “Tabuu ni shinakucha na?” On the very last chorus. Holy. The emotions she can bring out are just incredible. Gives me goosebumps every single time.
my favorite part of this song is how she absolutely weaponizes her breaths. Just super sharp, punctuated breaths that are essentially a note all on their own
Мне нравится как ты определил наиболее ключевые моменты в смене тембра и техники пения у Minami. Не просто отметил, а выделил и разобрал. Она этого достойна, и я рад что ты это оценил и проявил вовлеченность.
One of my favourite songs. The way the singer expresses the raw emotions of the lyrics through her singing is what makes it stand out from other music to me. You should check out the band I The Mighty, particularly the ending of (No) Faith in Fate. I think you'll really love the variation in the singing and he is also really good at expressing emotions like Minami.
Thrilled to see you react to some Minami ! And great review as always :) If you're looking for other great songs for her I'd recommend "Drop" ! It's my favorite of hers
Thanks for this bro... Love this song so much... And when realize the meaning of this song, make me cry 😭 Its so deep and match the manga feels... I can feel The loneliness, depression, and want to go through from this song... One of my fav anisong...
Another comment, the ending of this song has always made my heart feels so heavy. Like seeing an old friend after a while and see their face being tired from emotional wreck they been through, made them look mature but in a sad way. They have moved on but they didn't want to in the first place.
It's so interesting to discover why this song made me so emotional through your analysis. Amazing video! My selfish recommendation would be Rokudenashi. She has a unique style that captured my attention, but I can't really pinpoint what she does with her voice to make me like her songs so much. The Flame of Love would be the song I'd recommend.
Thank you for the video! You picked up all of the little nuances I was hoping for, really a great video! Like others have said, if you feel like doing more minami, hollowness and main actor are great picks. Main actor has nice register shifts. I do recommend just googling the english lyrics and following them alongside the song even though there is stuff lost in the translation.
When you see the translation of the lyrics paired with her delivery, it really sells the angst and desperation that Minami is trying to portray. Every note, every breath, every sigh is there on purpose. And it delivers.
Man, I really enjoy your videos. Seriously. You're super fun to watch as well as informative. Really appreciate the work you put in for these. Thanks! (edit: I hope you do more Minami)
What i love about minani is that "gasp" Sound, i heard a lot of people talking about "dont ever let people hear your breathing no matter what" But here mimani use it and really add that emotional feeling
I just went to her live concert last 2 weeks! She definitely sounds better in person than studio! You're right on, she sounds very pure and that is what makes her singing very attractive
maybe its not the aim of these videos, but what really impacts a lot in every minami song is the actual lyrics, and the story shes telling. "main actor" is the perfect example of this, but every song is very impactful and meaningful! hope you like them all :)
Yesss Minami is sooo good, defenitely looking foward to more minami videos! Hey Chris could you do a vocal analysis of a song from Mili? The singer Cassie is very playful when singing, i would say she is as playful as Ado but in her own way, and the lyrics are always so creative, its one of my favorite artists of all time, some songs are even written on made up leaguages haha, as for the song, i would recommend "Salt, Pepper, Birds, and the Thought Police", a very jazzy one, but they make all sorts of music. Im sure you'll love it.
Would ADORE seeing you react to Novelbright - Tsukimisou (The First Take ver.) A Japanese Male singer with an absolute fantastic vocal control and more! As someone currently undergoing vocal lessons, watching your Ado, and now Minami, reactions has been a blast. It’s been super helpful to me as I am a big Ado fan who loves practicing using her songs! I’ll be seeing her Live in March and I CANNOT wait. The Live version of Unravel shook me to my core so seeing it live will likely be an experience!🥰
the way minami incorporates her breathing into her vocals is a fairly consistent things its one of the things i love about her music. i could honestly recommend anyone of her songs but if i had to pick hollowness truly a musical masterpiece, another favourite would be her unreleased eternal blue
I went to her live in Kuala Lumpur two days ago. The show was lit! Minami and the band really perform really good in live too! Love her voice and all the song she wrote by herself.
one of the things i love about this song, and it's the reason I love how emotive minami is; the whole song is sung in the way that makes it feel like she's about to burst into tears and scream at any point throughout almost the entire song up until that last moment where it's almost like she's reached a meloncholic acceptance of the heartbreak the song is about. I adore it with all of my being, it is the most pure, raw emotion I have heard in any song my whole life. You truly FEEL her pain.
gracias por este análisis, me encanta la manera en que usted nos muestra la belleza en la voz de un artista. Pienso que la próxima canción de Minami puede ser Main Actor
I got the chance to see her in live 2 times and she is so amazing in Live she sound even better, and the most amazing part is that she play guitar as same time
I'd like to see your reaction on Mafumafu's cover of "hated by life itself." His voice is truly remarkable, undoubtedly spanning over 5 octaves. He possesses a captivating and original vocal tone, skillfully conveying emotions through his songs. An interesting fact is that he also composed a song for Ado (I highly recommend checking it out, it's called "Kokoro Tolu Na No Fukalai"). Like her, he began his career as an "utaite," a term in Japan referring to someone who does covers
Just saw this vid, and first vid from your channel for the for time, and I love your analysis of this song! I love Minami and the emotions she puts into each song. Like others have suggested, I highly suggest "Hollowness" as another song of hers to cover. Alot of her older songs protray so much depth of angst, loneliness, and pain in the story the song is meant to portray. Another one I suggest in "Eternal Blue" for that same reason. My personal favorite would be "Lilac" and also hihgly suggest that one as well, but for much different reasons. The song itself is very different, but it would definitely be best understood by listening to it. On a similar wavelength to Ado and Minami, I'd suggest almost any song from TOGENASHI TOGEARI, but maybe a particular song to start with could be "Piercing the dawn of time".
Yeah Ado and Minami, both definetly my favorite j-pop/j-rock artists. I dont know if you already did an reaction to the songs from Love is War but Masayuki Suzuki is a mega dope artist with such an interesting voice. If you havent heard the songs, I suggest to check them out the songs for the intros are called "Love is War - for season 1" "Daddy daddy do - for season 2" & "Giri Giri - for season 3".
Every time I've listened to this song, the image of punching a wall comes to mind since her voice will reach its "limit" but she willingly pushes further to make the crack to her voice which makes it sound a lot more emotional. Along with each sharp breath, it's all placed on purpose and well done. Versus most that sound that vocals are sung within range, she's willing to push upper limit and break it within reason. Akin to how Devin Townsend purposefully flexes his range. Least that's how I've understood it.
Very glad you notice and elavorated on the breaths she takes in the midle of the song :D I don't see that very offten in songs. It i think many vocal coaches instruct to avoid that but in this case it really really works. it conveys intencity desperation dispair and its very emotionally charged, it ads so much to the song, I wonder why people dont this more offten? One of the most liked coments in that video is "i dont know what she is saying but I can feel it"
When I hear the breath at the end of some parts I feel like through my ears I could imagine the tears running down a persons face as they despratly gasp for every breath due to the sheer level of emotion.

I went to both Ado and Minami concert last month. its really feel difference when hearing those on a live preformance. Hope to see more form you~!
OMG MINAMI!!! I really like "Lilac", is one of my favorites from her! It would be great if you could cover that song too!!
1:12 mosquito in my room be like
god damn it xD
I loved your reaction bro ❤
Thank you for this reaction 😊 I really like Minami
Thrilled to see you react to some Minami ! And great review as always :)
If you're looking for other great songs for her I'd recommend "Drop" ! It's my favorite of hers
Thanks for this bro...
Love this song so much... And when realize the meaning of this song, make me cry 😭
Its so deep and match the manga feels...
I can feel The loneliness, depression, and want to go through from this song...
One of my fav anisong...
Now this is a great reaction.
OMG I love your voice ! ! Also I learnt a lot about vocals on this vid alone. Thank you Mr Liepe
Glad to see him checking out Minami. Looking forward to more of these!
Thank you for the video! You picked up all of the little nuances I was hoping for, really a great video! Like others have said, if you feel like doing more minami, hollowness and main actor are great picks. Main actor has nice register shifts. I do recommend just googling the english lyrics and following them alongside the song even though there is stuff lost in the translation.
i love how you break every point down and describing it the way we all the amateurs understand
When you see the translation of the lyrics paired with her delivery, it really sells the angst and desperation that Minami is trying to portray. Every note, every breath, every sigh is there on purpose. And it delivers.
"hitting notes this level of self-expression that manami has is absolutely phenomenal" 표현력,전달력 ... 가사를 몰라도 전해지는 감정.. 이 노래는 이미 한 획을 그은 노래..
I can just listen to her inhaling 24/7 ❤😍
Man, I really enjoy your videos. Seriously. You're super fun to watch as well as informative. Really appreciate the work you put in for these. Thanks! (edit: I hope you do more Minami)
What i love about minani is that "gasp" Sound, i heard a lot of people talking about "dont ever let people hear your breathing no matter what"
But here mimani use it and really add that emotional feeling
ARRIIIIIGGGGGGGHHHTTTTTTT LETS GOOOO My fav Singer is finally being reacted by you, thanks so much Chris!
Sweet! Can we have Zutomayo or Yorushika next?
I really love their song but i don't think they're exceptional
I'm a simple man. I see Minami, I click.
I love your energy and style bro!
Thanks for reaction on Minami song! Can you do "Minami - Hollowness" reaction too? That's pretty good and interesting song I think🤔
You truly FEEL her pain.
amazing that you enjoyed this as much as i did
gracias por este análisis, me encanta la manera en que usted nos muestra la belleza en la voz de un artista. Pienso que la próxima canción de Minami puede ser Main Actor
As a Japanese person, I am proud that Minami's songs are being known and listened to all over the world.
I got the chance to see her in live 2 times and she is so amazing in Live she sound even better, and the most amazing part is that she play guitar as same time
i love when vocal teacher or analysis or whatever react to minami songs, i'ts just give me more enthusiasm
I learn so much with your videos! I think you will love Rude Loose Dance by her too!!
My man really needs to hear "Tot musica" from Ado. He's in for a ride
I've made the video... coming out soon!
@chrisliepe OMG I'm actually waiting ✋️
PATIENTLY WAITINGGGGG@@chrisliepe
@@chrisliepe omg you know what we need for real 😳🥺👍✨
Can't wait for you to get into more minami. I loved one of her recent songs "rude lose dance" I highly recommend it
make sure to check out her song Hollowness too! definitely an amazing showcase of her vocal ability and emotional prowess
Great song and analysis! Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
It's been 5 years since I first heard this song, but still have special place in my memory
Lilac from minami is the one who I most felt that breathings in a different ways and methods. Its gorgeous
Very glad you notice and elavorated on the breaths she takes in the midle of the song :D
I don't see that very offten in songs.
It i think many vocal coaches instruct to avoid that but in this case it really really works.
it conveys intencity desperation dispair and its very emotionally charged, it ads so much to the song, I wonder why people dont this more offten?
One of the most liked coments in that video is
"i dont know what she is saying but I can feel it"
When I hear the breath at the end of some parts I feel like through my ears I could imagine the tears running down a persons face as they despratly gasp for every breath due to the sheer level of emotion.
Your explanation are very good. Its good i learning something from your video
1 second into this video and I already clicked the like button!!! It's minami!!!!
