3:17 Carabiner is the word you’re looking for! Hey just wanted to say thanks for another great, informative review!! Your reviews are the best as a parent trying to figure out how many car seats will fit. I feel like no one else covers this info!
You could use rear view camera on the big screen while driving. We have used it and have no issues with visibility. Current R1S owner. Captains chairs is the big miss, no other complaints. EDIT: Forgot to mention that we have two kids under 4, so two car seats. Recently did a road trip with 3 car seats, 7 people and all our stuff. Surprisingly, no issues with space. It was great!
Agreed! Captains chairs as an option is a MUST , especially in 3rd row SUVs. And yes, how weird she didn't use the Rear back up cam on the big screen....??
We have this SUV.. we are a family of 5 with kids ages 6, 4, 2. Kids have a lot of space in the vehicle. We don't do all 3 in one row. We split them up, with either 1 or 2 in the 3rd row and 1 in the middle. One thing you didn't show is the 60/40 split in the second row, the middle part can be entirely folded down.. Which is what we do, and the kids just use that empty spot to go to the 3rd row. You also forgot to show the truck bottom space. You showed the flap where you have the charger, but if you take that out, you get an additional 7 or 8 cubic feet of space, and it's very deep. And also the frunk is absolutely massive. All in all, it's one of the best family SUV's you can get. Highly recommend it!
I agreed with you about the lack of buttons being annoying, but having owned an R1S for months, I *love* the Alexa voice feature…when I’m driving by myself. “Alexa, turn on the air conditioner. Alexa, turn on the interior lights,” etc. It’s a different story though when driving with my 3 year old who is *also* able to give Alexa voice commands, even from his 3rd row seat. 🥴
Love your videos as always, busy I’m a little sad you didn’t even show the front trunk, front sub trunk, and rear sub trunk that offer so much extra usability and storage.
I have the R1S. You can easily fit two or three carry on suitcases, and a ton of jackets, and backpacks in the front trunk and sub trunk. We’ve decided there is significantly more storage in the Rivian than in our mini van even with all the seats up in both. But unfortunately this review doesn’t show that benefit
Very Fair and Thoughtful review highlighting both the pros and cons. I’ve had the R1S for over the year and it’s absolutely amazing. Hands down best car I’ve ever owned. Has everything you need ranging from Adventure to Family friendly. Would recommend it to anyone in the market for a midsize to large SUV and willing to consider 100% all electric.
As for seeing behind you. Does the rear camera have the ability to be turned on in the screen if you want to see behind you? Most EVs with the large screen you can turn on the rear camera while driving forward at anytime. Does Rivian’s rear back-up camera have the ability to turn it on in the screen when you want/
Love these videos, Kelly! Thanks for making them fun and educational! As a mom of 4 I LOVE these videos to know how to set up car seats and what car to get with my kids!
Just fyi regarding leaving a key in the car- your phone is the key! There’s an app. You walk away, it locks itself and shuts off. So you wouldn’t have to leave a key in there. Also, the middle console pad is a charging pad :)
Yes, we own R1S. Double stroller fits in the frunk (remove the front cup holder off the stroller, of course). I also tried and got a check in suitcase to fit. Crazy spacious.
R1S outhandles and out accelerates most BMW sedans on the road and out offroads most Wrangles off it. R1S is totally worth the $74.9k-$103k asking price.
I’m not a jeep fan in the least and am a fan of rivian…but…saying that the rivian out off-roads a wrangler off-road simply shows one of two things. 1. You think dirt and gravel roads are the extent of “off-road”. 2. You have never driven a wrangler in true off-road conditions. The Rivian is on par with a xterra pro4x or 4Runner TRD off-road. And honestly the lack of a mechanical locker really holds it back even after you learn the tricks of how to modulate the throttle to get the traction control to act well. A wrangler is a whole tier higher off-road.
The 70k price that I paid 2 years ago was one of the best decisions of my life. I love that my truck is as fast as a Ferrari and can still do truck stuff.
I'm currently considering an R1S, but I worry my 5'3 wife won't be able to get into it comfortably due to the entry height. I know it has kneel mode, which may help, but I'm curious what you think about this.
I’ve owned my R1S for 6 months with 3 young kids. As you mentioned this is a startup company. And when you think about it how many American startup automakers have their been in your lifetime, let alone EV exclusive. Easiest way to lift the 3rd row is to go through the 2nd row. But yes, at this price point it was a complete miss by Rivian not to have it operate by motor or a strap to grab. It’s not often our family puts the 3rd row down. As for the HVAC!! It is absolutely horrible! I don’t mind not having physical buttons. Tesla perfected this, and I’m sure Rivian will with over the air updates. HVAC settings and vent direction should be tied to your driver profile, therefore, very rarely would you have to adjust anything. I get in with my phone as a key (I don’t use the carabiner) and the car automatically adjusts to my driver profile - seat position, hvac settings/vents, etc. Great car otherwise, Rivian had some killer lease, and purchase deals for end of Q1.
I own R1S I thought that I might have a problem with it, but after using it for 2 months, I really have no problem with it and I’m starting to quite like it.
I would love to have a Rivian one day, but can't afford it. I'm a proud shareholder at the moment and drive the R1T Matchbox in the blue color. I bought her for $7.99.
We own an R1S and just use PAAK (phone as a key). Also own a Tesla with PAAK, and the house also unlocks with apps so ... we don't carry any keys anymore.
Interesting after I test drove an r1s a few weeks ago I feel my r1t actually handles/corning better. My test r1s is on 20 inch ATT, guess that makes a difference. I wonder how this r1s compares to the new hummer suv.
nice review. air vents cannot be manually controlled is irritating. I don't get why there is no car play? For all the negatives i.e. not as slick looking as the native infotainment system, the real benefit for people is familiarity. It's going to take a while in getting used to a new infotainment system, all the quirks and perks. With the Carplay plug it in (oh, i recognize that!!) and gooooo! You have that fall back option. There needs to always be a good balance between the new and old. For me personally, RS1 is a great size, i want a genuine 7 seater and this ticks the box, good performance (quick and has good range), tick there. middle Bench nice. Really would like some massage seats. I saw the EV9 review the other day and they offer massage and relaxation chairs, safety tech is craaazy and all standard. You get so much more for your money. I'm not sure, stuck on this one.
So you didn’t mention the wireless charging pad up front - you just mentioned how it’s a place to store stuff. You also didn’t mention the huge storage space under the trunk area when you move the first level storage shelf, it’s SUPER deep and amazing storage. You also didn’t bother to mention or show how amazingly HUGE the FRUNK is! This vehicle has so much storage and so many storage options it’s insane. It’s literally the best family hauler out there right now in the EV world! You main/only focus was on car seats which is pretty sad. There is so much more to this amazing family hauler that you didn’t mention.
That driver side consult the fact that they have it where you like pull it down or like it looks like a pools open, but like it doesn’t really open like what was the point of pulling it open, but I thought it was gonna pull open and be giant storage, but it was not sad day
I've watched almost all your videos. You speak on ceiling vents alot. They are great but there is a concern we probably havnt considered. Babies and toddlers can't tell us when they are cold. Direct cold air can make them uncomfortable. I noticed that the other day with my 21month old. He was fussy during the drive. Got home. Took him out and his legs were ice cold. I think ambient air would be much more comfortable for them than direct air. And I live in Houston tx( we get reat heat down here). I just think it's something to consider.
Ok, what are you going for your family? Minivan or SUV with 4 kids and two strollers? My daughter is expecting her third, minivan or SUV? They now have a RAV4 and Tucson aren't going to cut it.
My family went for the KIA Carnival minivan instead of a three-row SUV. Way more space in the third row and excellent trunk space by comparison. That said, I love what Rivian is doing with their SUV's. Wish I could make it work with three car seats, but it's a no-go for me for now.
We have three under 5, have both a minivan and the R1S. Both are fantastic choices. The minivan is much easier day to day with the sliding doors, and lower load height for the kids. But the Rivian is more fun, more comfortable, more capable, can tow, can offroad, etc. can’t go wrong with either. They both have strengths and weaknesses and it comes down to what you prioritize
Is your phone not the key? With my Tesla I use my watch or phone as the key. Also, I imagine in due time you will also like not having to push a button to start the vehicle lol. Nice video btw
I love Rivian. Beautiful, amazing tech, very safe and crazy fast. Quad motor 0-60 2.5sec. 1/4 mile in 10.4sec. Some of your negatives are lame. Manage your expectations.
You want a start/stop button, do you have any idea how useless that is in an EV? And the complaint about the digital vent controls, try turning on/off or aiming the passenger a-pillar vent from the driver's seat. You are missing the point of this capability. You want easier access the climate controls, but at the same time you said you liked that you had access to the climate controls right there. Does your cell phone still have all the knobs and buttons or have you gotten used to a smart phone yet? There is a rear view camera option right on the dock, but what car doesn't have a visibility issue with a giant center car seat.
I saw the pickup version at my local autozone. For some weird reason an employee told me the rivian truck cost 200k, I’m not sure why he felt the need to lie about it. I researched it and called him out on the lie the next time i saw him. However, i live in the south and for some reason a lot of people don’t like it if they perceive you to be driving a nicer vehicle than they are, even if its a used BMW. For some reason many people assume it’s new and they get angry. Comes with the territory of being a minority here.
It’s a great looking car, I’m just not an EV person. I’ve got an X7 that was not quite what these go for and I can’t believe how many amenities they missed the mark on. That 3rd row situation is bad. I mean, first world problems for sure… but at $100k a pull tether should have been a minimum.
I own Rivian R1S quad motor adventure 315 miles range. I was skeptical about it first but after driving it for 2 months, I cant even compare it to anything else. There is nothing this vehicle can’t do. 0-60 in 3.2 sec. Amazing off road. I can put my 2 kids grand parents and my wife and still have 1 spare seat. IF There is limited cargo space in the back if your have 3rd row up, there is plenty of space in the frunk. With all that cargo and family you can still beat most of ferraries on the road and wrangles off the road. The only 2 things I wish they had is sun shades and step for elderly for easier access. However, it has air suspension and kneels if you need someone to get in. It’s far more superior then X7
@@dgoroden The X7 and R1S are not apples to apples… I was not comparing the two nor was I taking away from what the car does have to offer. I was only pointing out that it missed the mark on some amenities that really should be a no brainer on a car of that caliber and price.
@@Melissa.Scott1 Ok. Agreed. Well I’m just very amazed every time I drive R1S. It is effortless and seem that can do everything. I guess I was just sharing my excitement. I hope it won’t give me any problems in the future. That’s all.
Great video. I can't imagine paying that kind of money in today's awful economy, for it to be missing sunshades, it's hard to get to climate control and no ceiling vents. Crazy what people will pay for.
Some people were even crazier a few years ago, spending more than 100k on a Tesla Model S/X. Those cars are far inferior to the Rivian R1S and are only worth half the price at best.
It’s beautiful. When you’ll see it in the back view mirror you will know what it is and probably get to the right knowing that it is 7000 lbs and 0-60 in 3.2 sec
Disagree with you strongly there. Things she didnt mention is that first off, it starts in the low 70s. Some trims go 0-60 in 3 seconds flat. Raises to 15 inches with adjustable air suspension, and can wade through 42 inches of water. The front also looks a lot more three dimensional and luxurious in person, as well as when the DRLs are illuminated.
I'm not an SUV or truck person, but I absolutely am for Rivian. Love these things.

The front that’s so ugly.. that climate control is horrible.. for a $100K, nah. waiting for the Lucid Gravity
@@RealElectech still ugly AF tho.. I’ve seen several of these in LA, ugly.
300 to 310 miles. Lets not exaggerate.
They have configurations getting over 375 real world if range matters that much
@@sjs8-2013 Yes the 2 motor version.
I’m not driving an EV with three kids under 5. That’s asking for trouble.
That’s crazy. Not having to fill up gas with 3 kids alone is huge. Where I live, a minivan was carjacked while fueling.

What trouble? I've never heard that EV's are problematic with kids before. I can't picture why it would be an issue either.
What kind of trouble are you thinking about? I don't understand the incongruence of children under 5 and EVs.
Yeah what?
Did someone really have that much little respect for a free car that they put their muddy feet up on the dashboard? Nice.
