  • Y'all were constantly asking me if I've seen the movie, well I did, and here's my honest take on it from the perspective of someone with a craniofacial difference like Auggie.
My name is Andy and I was born Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing and unable to speak, so sign language is my native language. I do music covers in American Sign Language (ASL), as well as tutorials and other fun series incorporating ASL! Sign Language allows a different perspective and experience in music, it truly shows the emotions and concepts behind the songs' meanings.

I'm pretty protective of my life's story and I do apologize if I come off at any point as a negative angry person who's dumping on the movie. But I wanted to speak my honest opinion from my perspective, and I thought this was as good a topic and opportunity to also speak out against issues I feel are important, one of them being representation.
Above all though, I wanted to speak out for the need to spread more kindness and to carry on the message the movie and the book deliver so well: "Choose kind". I truly want to help change the world just a tad bit for the better for people like me, because I understand what it's like and I know when I was younger I would've loved someone who looked like me or had the same medical needs as me to learn from. That applies to anyone who's new to Deaf culture or hearing people who want to learn more about Deaf culture and sign language.
My goal is to help erase the stigma on people who are born different, or those who can't hear or speak. I believe the best way to do that is to raise awareness and educate, to show people what those perspectives are like.
I believe Wonder was a very good movie to start that conversation and bring awareness on craniofacial differences and the social issues that go with that, but it's on all of us, whether you're in the craniofacial community or not, to truly have the movie make an impact by carrying on it's message of kindness and using it as a platform to educate and raise awareness and exposure in media and the mainstream, to erase any judgement that we are somehow less than.
Spread love and acceptance that's all any of us can do.

My daughter- who uses a wheelchair- felt a similar way about the show "Glee". They did not use an actor who uses a wheelchair to play the character who does. There are SO few roles for actors who use wheelchairs and it could have been such a good opportunity for an actor who was a wheelchair user to show that you could achieve the goal of acting professionally- but no....

When I found out that Auggie's actor didn't have a craniofacial difference it really bugged me, but I tried to brush it off by thinking that maybe they wanted to be specific to the book and couldn't find anyone (which yeah, that's a weak excuse). The fact that in the book the difference is never specified makes me even more irritated. Still, it's good to know that the movie was still really good in spite of this. Before I was thinking I'd watch the movie but skip the book, now I think I'm gonna do the opposite! Really glad I got this book for my mom at Christmas. Great job!

I appreciate your tone of voice so much. I'm depending on reading the subtitles while you speak but your tone of voice really conveys how you feel about what you are saying.

Also, loved the review! I loved that you not only talked about the movie, but also about the book. Great idea! Look forward to seeing more!

I was so mad when I looked up the cast and saw that the kid didn’t have a facial difference, since the message is acceptance and representation but they don’t choose a real person with the trait they want to represent.... I agree, the book was awesome. I’m just disappointed that they chose someone who had to put on makeup to look like he was different.

I agree, but I also think Jacob Tremblay is an exceptional actor and choosing him helped the film reach a wider audience. When the film has such a positive message, getting it out to as many people as possible is a good thing.

I know I’m really late in watching this review, but I have to say it is probably among my top favorites of your videos that I’ve seen. I especially loved when you said how for you, your life experiences don’t end when you leave a movie theater. That’s why we need representation.
I don’t have craniofacial differences, but I am disabled and agree about the lack of accurate representation in Hollywood as well as the harm of perpetuating the myth that a disability is a mask that we can put on and take off when desired. Thank you so much for making this review. I really loved it and I can’t wait to see more of the content you post!

“i am also upset owen wilson never said “Wow!””
😂😂 that part killed me Andy.
i’ve always wanted to read the book and i feel silly because i didn’t even know it was turned into a movie. i agree with you that they definitely could have casted a young boy with facial differences. it’s sucks that hollywood does stuff like this. knowing that the boy who played Auggie was very invested into the role was very sweet though.

  • @juliea8925

totally agree with this review. it really rubbed me the wrong way to see they didn’t cast an actor with a real facial difference to be in the movie. i complained to my mom about it and she was like “they probably couldn’t find a good actor that really had a facial difference.” like really?? you don’t think there are ANY kids out there who like to act, are good at acting, and happen to have facial differences? my sister has the book and i’ve been nagging her ever since i watched the movie to let me borrow it because she told me the book was much better than the movie. i agree that the conversation needs to be carried on, and those of us that don’t have any physical differences or chronic medical issues need to do our part to not just watch the movie and then go on with our lives, but be willing to talk about it and not shy away from the things that are different or might make us uncomfortable.

I love that even though you technically can't fully say the words because of how your head is formed, you have all the vocal inflections and pitch there. You are saying the words how you can physically say them. I've never really seen that before and it's awesome

i found out about you from your appearance at sbsk and decided to check your yt channel. your video is one of my favorites at sbsk, and i love watching it again from time to time because i felt very drawn to your character and all the things that you've said in the video, it makes me feel better and makes me appreciate what i have instead of being depress, and especially what you said about self-love because i lack that a lot.
and this the first video im watching from you and i dont feel bored listening to you go on and on with the review, im enjoying it very much, i cant wait to watch even more videos in a bit. keep doing what you do and keep being yourself because there will be more people drawn to you like how your personality drew me in and i like you a lot

I haven’t read the book or seen the movie yet, though after watching this, I will. I agree with you, having an actor have to go through hours of makeup everyday to look like he has a facial difference instead of hiring an actor with a facial difference is incredibly annoying. I just started following you on Instagram like last week, and after watching this, I just subscribed to your RUclips channel. Thank you for all the work that you’re doing, it’s so important. Keep it up & happy new year!

I have the book, and I don’t think I want to watch the movie. I was super excited for it like eight months ago when I found out it was being made into a motion picture... but when I learned Auggie is played by a perfect kid with a perfect face it just rubbed me wrong (also not saying anybody with any type of physical deformity isn’t perfect, but you get the point). Just my feelings on it..
Andy, I love your face, I’m also loving the (facial) hair!! And you’re super good at pronouncing words and using different tones and such. I’m proud of you. Love your review❤️

Hi Andy! I absolutely love your videos, they are really amazing and give great insight into the deaf community. I have a quick question that I hope doesn’t come off as rude, and if it does I’m super sorry. You seem to be so good at using tone in speaking despite being deaf, and you even hum along so songs in some of your videos. Did you get so good at this from practice or did you become fully deaf at a later age, or something else? Again, I mean absolutely no disrespect. As a hearing person it’s sometimes difficult to distinguish what might be disrespectful to a deaf or hard of hearing person. Thank you!

I am really glad I found you through dailysign, this was a great video. I wish I had learned sign language younger because my mom became legally deaf through well put nicely mis-informed faith medicine, My one contention (and at a base level I do agree in essence) and I understand it, but the be nice / love people for being people thing. I do think as a whole humans should be accepting and learn about things, In the same token I genuinely enjoy being an ass sometimes, more than that probably, And I would find it rude to apply exception to any mentally developed adult for any reason, I just think like that would actually be pandering and lead to people missing out on a genuine human experience. Now the obvious contention to that is that they already receive alot of crude and inconsiderate attention and it's not good mentally to force anyone to deal with that ontop of their life circumstance. Though I think this is atleast partially shallow, I would bet dollars to dimes that well over 90% of those interactions are out of something like Lack of exposure to information, lack of real world experience, and/or some combination of emotions and expectations. While I agree unfair expectations and lack of teaching is incorrect I also think mostly alot of the time it is fear, weakness and awkwardness. Now awkwardness is its own social problem that is likely a result of parents and schools but the simple fact that there is fear or confusion or inexperience involved to me makes it vastly different than genuine fairly distributed meanness or hatred. I hate alot of people at different times for different reasons and I value that emotion highly, I value the freedom to express it and the effects of experiencing it from others. It evolved in and with us for good reason, it has contributed to all of our lives causally and guides us throughout them. I think trying to do away with any emotion is incorrect and dangerous. What we need is self control we punish the actions which harm that may be spawned from hate or evil thoughts but not for having the emotions or thoughts aswell, and anytime someone is capable of expressing honestly a visceral emotion through words or expression alone I view a success through self control and discipline. So I guess what I'm saying is dont let the weak and immature and awkward ruin something as powerful as hate or being mean because these are human aswell. Now obviously if I or anyone were to employ it all the time or even slightly to often we would probably be socially punished through being ignored, unfavoritism etc. and that would likely be justified but I think there should be a reverse of this, anyone who is incapable of harshness and I mean fair harshness being able to treat people equally genuinely be it "good" or "bad" it should be common to trust and prefer them less than those who can especially in certain context. anyways I hope this has made some sort of sense. I hate you all.. and I love you all. GL and may the force be with you.. JOIN THE DARK SIDE!

(This kinda has nothing to do with the video, its's just me being a confused human who knows asl)
My friend knows that I know two different languages, and I tried to say "I speak sign language" and then I sat there, confused about how I speak a language that involves 0 speaking. SO, what do I say when I'm saying that I know asl?

I think the only thing that was truly missed out with having someone who doesn't have Treacher Collins Syndrome in the role was that Auggie talks completely normally in the film, and on in this video from the WE Movement, Jacob Tremblay was doing this speach, and Nathaniel Newman came in and started talking, I was surprised by his voice, I didn't know that your voice and how you talk could be affected by your face, and having an actor with Treacher Collins Syndrome would have added that bit of realism

okay but,,,,,why would someone think your were going around in everyday life wearing a mask??? Like just going to eat lunch at McDonald’s wearing a mask cause why not! That just seems so dumb??? Also it bothered me that the actor doesn’t actually have facial difference and I don’t even have/know someone (other than you hehe) that has facial difference. (Edit: I’m not saying I think you’re making it up, I’m saying that’s dumb for them to say and to think. Just so we’re clear :) )
