- Will and Kevin took a road trip to Georgia where Will picked up this auction special, a 2001 Porsche Boxster. It started out rough, but he is figuring out the quirks and has taken to this mid-engine two-seater roadster. Big things to come with this one. Check out Will transforming this Boxster into his daily Winter Beater.
Shout out to Rennline for hooking Will up with the tow hook and wheel spacers!

If you are aren't sure of what's going on, the boys at ECS Tuning bought 4 cheap euro cars and plan to build them into functioning, road worthy machines. Then put them through a series of challenges that will test not only the cars strength and endurance, but the drivers as well.

I like these videos because shit gets done. It’s not a 6 month series dragging the ass out of it by undoing bolt by bolt.
🤘🏼
Good stuff William
you guys should do stuff like this, then enter the cars in give aways
Boss level money pit right there 💪💪
Didn’t one of the guys leave ECS for donut,
They are solid fun cars

$1900 is a good deal. The work done is even better.
I like this project
My daily driver in northern Illinois is a 2003 Boxster S. With winter tires and a box of rocks in the rear trunk it is very predictable in the snow. Having a hard top makes it better in the winter too I love it!
I wanna say that this is probably the best ECS video ever.
Love this series. So glad they took time to give us longer videos and do a deeper dive on each car vs last year. Keep at it guys!
Glad you’re enjoying it!
I drive my 2003 Boxster S year round and I put the same Blizzak tires on it. The car does amazingly well in the snow. When I heard you were doing one of the rear axles, I could hardly weight for you to comment on the torque required for the axle nut and you never mentioned it. Oh boy have I bought a lot of parts from ECS Tuning for my Boxster S, love you guys!
Glad to hear you are enjoying yours as much as me! 460 Nm (340ft lbs ) for the axle nut. 39 Nm (28ft lbs) for the inner bolts. That's a lot of uggga duggas!
Maybe it's just me but it was refreshing and pleased to see the attempt in fixing the switch, it's something simple, saves 3-6 meals worth of money and less waste. Even more so when considering every other channel just throws money at parts and mechanics, making owing cars look expensive and creates junk when it can be easily fixed. Just thought I'd point it out, good work!
Please keep this. It deserves to be kept and fixed and upgraded.
I have a 1998 Boxster with like 92 k miles. I have had it garage kept and away from my wife and noone can believe its a 98. I love the way you know your way around the car. Keep it! I am keeping mine for my son! And btw you my man just got a subscriber.
Hells yea!
buying a car without a real roof for the winter sounds like a big brain move
Fortunately, the hard tops can still be found for somewhat reasonable prices, unlike Miata hardtops.
one person's beater car is another persons's Dream car
I'd imagine you can't really not care about these beaters after you put so much work and time into them
Ps. Will is the best 😉
True.
@@ecstuning but Kevin says "Shut up". LOL!
Cooped a '99 Boxster for $4600 last year. LOVE it. No issues, other than me cracking the back window trying to drop the roof on a 60° day.
Expensive mistake. Other than that, All Good
I would recommend Ben’s Short Shift Kit to fix that shifter slack. By far the best option available which allows you to switch to metal bearings instead of the soft stick bushings.
This!
@@uniwerksdesign Only the best, I’ve never been happier with such a simple mod. You guys nailed it. 💯
@@killiancarles9870 Right,!?! I sit there at stop lights and row through the gears only because it is so satisfying!
I had a cheap one of these in the UK, I removed the ruined old soft top all together and ran with a cheap hard top, engine access was easy and you had room for a surprising amount of stuff where the roof used to go!
these cars, once sorted, are amazing.
I love the donut media shirt! Love RUclipsrs supporting each other !
You're a smooth presenter and narrator bro, keep that up about you. Irrespective the car.
Love To Big Will
The parking brake needs to be up to open and close the top. Idle is likely dirty throttle body, the plastic window can be replaced cheaply at a convertible top place.
Funny thing about the parking brake - in order to pass the TÜV it must grab fully within six clicks.
@@warummussmeinnameangegeben6502 i would off myself if i was a car enthusiast in germany, i thought the british mot was bad, but that’s some other shit 😬
My winter beater and summer beater for the last 6 years has been a 1500 dollar 165k mile 01 boxer as well lol. Great little cars
Hell yeah!
Where do people find such prices?
So much complexity. Would love to see a restomod where all the "convenience" systems are stripped. Get it down to 356 simplicity.
They will grow on you 1,000%.
I've had my 98 Boxster since 2013. The absolute most base model you can get. Literally the only thing I could conceive of trading it for would be a newer Boxster S.
Makes me proud to own my 99’ Boxster
Love these winter beater builds 👍
"Get a lil powdered horsepower and anything is fun" this is facts, even my camry with no handbrake is still a blast in the snow
Keep the car! It looks fabulous and sure is fun to drive. I already looked at some Boxster for sale in my area but they are all still expensive
I got cheap 986 to try it, getting into P-car world. And I have same experience like you did - its growing on me, I started to like the look too... its actually amazing car with great engineering behind it.
Cool winter beater...well done
Yeah a glass rear window is the right choice. Would love to see a full cost breakdown with labor time too.
Thanks! That's a good idea, we may just have to make an episode breaking everyone's costs down as a comparison when all is said and done!
Sick episode guys! Keep it up!
"porsh" into a "Porsche"! Great to watch a guy work that truely knows German cars.
I love this car
I didn’t know ECS had a channel! I buy my fluids from them :-). Subscribed.
Love these winter beater series!!
Hi, I have a 1999 boxster in the uk that I bought over a year ago. I had an issue with my alarm control unit due it getting wet. I replaced the acu and also the ecu and the key fob from a Boxster and the same year and gearbox type. That fixed most of the electrical issues I had.
Honestly didn't think this thing would run, was pleasantly surprised when you did get it running and drove it all the way back. Fixing that idle issue too ? Super simple. Based on what has been showed in this video I feel the car could be quite reliable at least as a winter beater :D It's also nice to see some time and money being put into these older cars. Regardless of their very apparent issues :)
Great little car...always had fun driving it especially top down...easy car to fix...
Pretty dreamy car a boxster, all in all not bad for repairs needed for the price, very nice!
Cool car!
Bravo!
The frunk 🤣 we just making up words now lol
This Porsche looks awesome!
Love that you picked a convertible for a “winter” beater! 😂💪
Have you tried giving the vin to any Porsche service Dept and having them run it to see what services were done ? Maybe even running a carfax / auto check can show service history. I’m suggesting all this to see if there is any other record of the IMs bearing being replaced. Otherwise, great content !!
I actually did that before even purchasing the car. Unfortunately, no service history attached to the VIN. A true gamble!
RWD sports cars are fantastic winter cars. I daily my NA miata, its fantastic in winter.
"Powedered horsepower"
lmao I love this
love the idea of a porsche BEATER ! makes sense. great video.
I daily drive this exact same car so I really like this vid man! Stoked to see more!
Wish I had your tools... Awesome car
Cool video!!!
Those engines sound amazing catless and with a high flow muffler
Definitely keep it and do not destroy it, please!
Nice video mate! There are some nice looking updated headlights that you could get to spruce it up even more.
Def keep it, make it better and have fun!
In Poland you have to pay 10 000 $ for this Porsche, and random people only earn 600$ A MONTH! Our winter beater is rusty e36. You definitely lucky guy
nice work!!
That drift in the woods is dangerous but sooooo dope
I want a crew to go out in the snow and play
Ayy in the US?
Where you at?

@@wafi3187 you got plenty of snow there today gotta get out there and slide. I drove my semi through there this morning and was sliding all over the place, but not on purpose
The idea of porsche as a drift car is pretty neat.
Should 100% lift it! Turn it into a Baja Boxster!
I like where your head is at. Build series?
Hardtop time!
I said the same thing! Soft top is a hassle!
Drivind a cabrio in the winter? so Murica!!!
I live in snowy sweden and have had both 986 and 996 for winter, man they are great cars. Super easy to work on too, and I'm a total novice
You guys should do a grassroots budget rally challenge
🤔
Wow.... Zero thumbs down...
Looks sweet
19:03 song its amazing
You have a emergency pull cable to open the frunk on the driver side wheel well
I’ve tried a few maf cleaners but the CRC always got me the best results
Dude I love this car. I bought one back in the days. At the time buying the 996 engine 320hp is the big upgrade. So I spent over 30k on engine and install. Then sportier suspension. Haha funny to hear how much you spent. It's a very nice car
Right on!
My dad picked up a cheap boxster s yesterday. Lot of car for the money but still also needs some work to bring it up.
Real shit at the very end, I’m excited to learn how to work on my Porsche
a back glass with a rear defrost, nice! you know what else is nice, not having a convertible in the winter time.
It's good to have options in Ohio because we could have 60 degrees or 10 degrees in the winter.
La Boxster fait enfin partie des vrais Porsche
I want this as my project car
This was a good video
Better do that IMS bearing if you’re gonna keep it
I'm torn between doing clutch and IMS, or letting it ride; then if it lets go, so be it, swap time!
With IMS, isn’t it true that if it hasn’t blown on a high mileage car, it probably won’t
@@improcrastinating8063 Yes it is, I’ve had a few guys tell me how they would run hot laps for hours on ones that had over 80k miles. With I think a 3% fail rate, it really is blown out of proportion.
Having said that, those engines cost a bit much to replace.
@@kaijorgensen6940 ive heard that the ims probably wont go out if you drive it aggressively sometimes. correct me if im wrong tho
@@that_jeffery572 I’ve heard the same from a few Porsche techs, and I have a 95k mile Cayman, no issues yet, and it does not get driven nicely except on the way to the track. So far so good
Now I'm a new subscriber! Also, damn it, I want a beater Porsche Boxster
Usually open diffs don't slide out so easily.
you can replace the old key transponder with the transponder from the new immo set (the small chip in the key fob) and leave the locks intact! Cool vid though really enjoyed it:) \m/
When I bought it, the key that worked in the ignition, didn't match the door handle, so I needed a new set to get everything to match!
@@rndmheroxx aahh nice! yea makes sense.. sry I didn't catch that from the video!
Nice one
Don't worry about doing the IMS until you need to do the clutch.
damn that porsche is a real junker haha, cool beater for sure!
Miata is always the answer XD
Haha! I would've picked an NA as a winter beater if it qualified for the series. So, the german equivalent seemed like the next best option.
As someone who caught my IMS bearing going before it did damage, yours does not make the rattle on startup that is an indication of impending disaster...
Pretty much everyones car is a winter beater in texas now (;
why ? :)
@@leo133636 if we get snow its gone by the next day. I’m from indiana so im used to it and have been going on some awesome drives on the ice and snow but most texans dont see it ever

Alright well now I need one.

Such a clean garaage and everything. Just forgot to wear gloves for the cleaning of the throttle body. Gotta wear that PPE guys
porsche and retrowave
Watch for a new ECS Tuning product: the “Shut Up Kevin” tee shirt 👕
That idea is going to our marketing team.
@@ecstuning I'd buy one. And I don't even have a friend named Kevin.
You would think a salvage car would have some sort of localized damage from an accident or something but this car has had a rough life it looks like!
Hi, Nice Vid! we bought a 986 2.5 recently. I noticed two problems. Let see if I can explain in english. Lack of power at high rpm: Full gas on 4th or 5th gear and the car was not able to rise rpm passing 4500/5000 rpm. Moreover some "misfires" around 2500/3000 rpm: I was driving slowly, then if you put more than, let's say, 60% of the pedal down I noticed lack of power and suddenly a little jerk and the engine is strong again. No code errors on the dasboard. I cleaned the MAF without succes. I put a new one (Bosch brand for around $150) and the car goes perfect! Hope this will help if someone noticed same problem. Regards from Spain!
Are you guys looking into selling the wheels that were on the car? Finally good to see the 986 get some love.
I actually did end up selling those , which help recoupe a good chunk of the purchase cost!
Nice ! Now get an mr2 turbo!
"powdered horsepower" is my favorite kind of horsepower
Sweet As :) 👍
if you took two cylanders away you would have a sweet subaru winter beater
