UPDATING THE TAIL LIGHTS OF MY MINI COOPER

- Well I finally did it. I installed Union Jack taillights on my MINI. I can say the final result is incredible and I want to thank The MINI Vlog ( / theminivlog ) for providing the instructions in the 3 videos he made on the subject as this process can be tedious. I included the instructions below and I did some checking and you have to do something similar for the aftermarket taillights but the process is very straight forward. I am still having some flickering on start up on the indicators but I think that will be remedied by changing the settings to those as well. You'll need to download the BimmerCode App and purchase expert mode.
Instructions:
1. Plug in ODB connector and connect via Bluetooth to your phone
2. Launch the BimmerCode app
3. Go into the Body Domain Controller category in basic mode
4. In the voltage monitoring section, make sure the Tail Light Monitoring is set to LED and not monitoring
5. Find module called "Adaptive Brake Light Cold Monitoring" - set from Active to NOT ACTIVE
6. Change into expert mode
7. Go to the 3061 LcxOutputChannels2 section
8. Find and set BL_R_IS_LED = aktiv (active)
9. Find and set BL_R_WARMUEBERWACHUNG = nicht_aktiv (not active)
10. Find and set BL_R_KALTUEBERWACHUNG = nicht_aktiv (not active)
11. Find and set BL_L_IS_LED = aktiv (active)
12. Find and set BL_L_WARMUEBERWACHUNG = nicht_aktiv (not active)
13. Find and set BL_L_KALTUEBERWACHUN = nicht_aktiv (not active)
14. - 3064 - Mapping_brakeforced_1_L_Output = bl_l
- 3064 - Mapping_brakeforced_1_R_Output = bl_r
- 3065- Mapping_brakeforced_2_L_Output = bfd_l
- 3065- Mapping_brakeforced_2_R_Output = bfd_r
- 3065 - Mapping_bremsl_2_L_output = fra_h_l
- 3065 - Mapping_bremsl_2_R_output = fra_h_r
15. Now tap the code button in the app.
16. Your ECU may restart and your engine will shut off.
17. Power off the car.
18. Power back on the car and you should not see any errors!
(NOTE: I got a fault on the taillights while applying the brakes today. Make sure everything pertaining to those uniques, indicators and reverse bulbs, are set to LED with the warnings turned off. Better to be on the safe side with that.)

Don’t be discouraged if you run across some faults. Just double check but the good news is I think the BimmerCode app now allows you to code the taillights in regular mode rather than expert.

@theorganicjuicebox go through bimmer code, make sure all the taillight options are set for LED.
Nice upgrade. I have always liked these rear clusters. Just a few points when updating something like this. Undo screws and bolts from the bottom up so that if it is likely to pop out it wont ‘hang’ from a bottom screw. Also, before adding the new light cluster you should always cleans the muck from the bodywork of the car. The next time you wash your car the new addition will pop just that little bit more. Quick easy things, but they do make a difference. Lloyd
will these setting work as well for the 2007 R56 mini cooper s with union jack led taillights? I cant find anything for the R56. I have the exact same OBII adapter and bimmercode app and have tried getting it fixed with no success. My brake lights, turn signal and reverse lights work fine but the running lights wont come one other than a small section on the driver side only. any help is greatly apricated!
Good video, encourages the faint of heart to give it a go. Hints: 1. I have a set of 5 or 6 trim removers (plastic) intended to be used on Minis which can be ordered from killallchrome in the UK. 2. If you drop things like I do putting a towel or rug under where you are working, will catch any dropped screws. 3. I love my oem code reader and recommend the Blue Driver for novices like me as it is easy to use. 4. f you highlight the text which is in a different language, Google will translate the entire thing in just seconds. 5. One good thing about the after market lights is you can get a black/grey flag instead of the red which if you have lots of black on your car looks great.
Is there a way of changing the union jack lights to the older round lights?
Now i got the error code off mine with ease however mine flicker at start up. Now i have body domain controller but when i click on it it doesnt shoe warm or cold settings. I need that to turn the fli ker on start up off. Do u know any other way to do it and or did urs flicker at start up?
I got wrror codes turned off useing the xpert mode however when i broke today wrror came on said left brake light malfunction. Is that the 3064 n 3065s i have to use to solve thwt??
Well done buddy they look great. Maybe I will do this mod sometime in the future. I recently installed the OEM Mini puddle light projectors and used the JCW checkered lens and it's very nice at night compliments the OEM checkered mirror caps that I put on. Keep up the good work mate.
It's better that you used OEM lights as it keeps the originality of your Mini with approved and accepted parts where possible.

I just installed on my 2019 S. Everything works except for when I press the brake and turn signal the turnsignal doesn’t flash it dims ever so slightly but doesn’t flash as normal any suggestions?
What year is ur mini … I have a 2018 cooper s carbon edition .. would this mod work ? .. I’m new to all this
did your car originally have halogen or LED tail lights?
Hey MINIac, since my 2015 Cooper has led taillights, would coding still be needed or is it plug and play?

I own a new F60 2020 ( USA ) my Union Jacks, the blinker is basically like an arrow pointing the wrong direction lmao. I was wondering if I could code it to blink like yours or like the UK version?
@@TheMINIac No I mean that the F60, in UK only the middle line blink but in USA the whole thing blinks. I was hoping I could change that using BimmerCode
Yep, 'Arrows' pointing the opposite direction of your intended turn.... Dumbest thing I've ever seen!
Only an overpriced German car masquerading as an old British POS would have such idiotic turn signals!
Is it possible to separate the brake light from the turn signal and leave them independent?
Only if you buy the European versions of the taillights from SMPS2012 and they only work correctly on 2018 and older cars that didn’t originally have Union Jack taillights.
@@TheMINIac Mine is a 2014 Mini Cooper S, from the United States, is there nothing you can do to separate it then?
@@rodrigoberlandi3914 go to SMPS2012.com and you can get the European taillights. Mine were OEM US taillights and the one issue I had with them was that because they didn’t have a separate signal and brake, whenever I hit the brakes and had the hazards on I would get a taillight fault code.

Change the coding so the car knows it’s an LED instead of a Halogen? Sounds easier to buy a new MINI. Other videos said only the aftermarket’s were easy plug ins, but it seems originals are too.
Glad I saw this before I bought them, but I’m buying them anyway!

I'm actually in the UK and there are some places you really don't want to be going around with union jacks. There's a genuine chance of them getting vandalised. Can you take the tail lights from older model and replace the union jacks? Thanks

Hi, I absolutely love all your Mini reviews. Question, I have a 2022 mini cooper 4 door S. I just changed the tail lights to the European model tail Lights (Amber turn signals). The result is.....1/ on the turn signals, only the Vertical turn lights blink and not the horizontal light? 2/ I am getting a warning indicator on the reverse lights - I am guessing I need to get on the bimmer app to fix this. Your thoughts please.
@@TheMINIac Hi, I was going thorough some comments under 'Mini Vlog' and one of the gentleman has the exact issue I am having. Unfortunately, he has forgotten how he fixed it :) . the following is his comments on the issue he was having ... ' There's an issue where the brake light overrides the blinker here in the US market with full red led uj lights (the UK/EU uj lights have the amber horizontal bar for blinker and narrow vertical bar closest to the license plate for brake lights so they don't have the issue). Please have someone in the car while you record the video and have them turn on the blinker annd leave it blinking and then apply brakes and hold the brakes. In my case that caused the brake light to light up and stop blinking which could cause serious issues in traffic. As soon as the brake is released the blinker starts blinking again. There's is a code for that too on one of the forums so I was able to change it and now it works as intended but everyone please confirm that you don't have this issue and if you do please change it - I forgot the exact code since I did it like 6-8 months ago but if you guys need it let me know and I'll find it and post it. Hi, where did you get your new set of lights from?
@samuelthomas1370 they were OEM union Flag taillights.
But you can also get aftermarket ones that’ll work without much programming.
The hardest part for me was getting the box open, ended up using a jigsaw in frustration and thankfully only landed a superficial gouge on the left side lamp, a bit of hard sanding took most of it out and is only noticeable during the day when not raining. Found fitting them quite easy though.
If ur originals were led n union jack is led whyd u hve to code em? Cause they werent plug n play?
Even if you had leds programming is still needed to remove warning lights from the dashboard

I know we talked on Instagram. I hope the dealer is able to help you figure it out. I’m honestly baffled but US spec cars work differently than EU.
My car at the time would throw an error code when I had the hazards on and hit the brakes.
