Hey John, great discussion. I wonder if it is possible if some of these ancient lava tubes are so deep, that atmospheric pressure could reach a level where pressure suits might not be needed. It might be ridiculously cold unless the temperature is controlled, but the atmospheric pressure and the protective ground layer would support that effort. Has that ever been discussed? (BTW... Hi Eryn. Great work, as usual).

JMG ... Event Horizon has to be one of, if not the best channels on RUclips for science and theory concerning space. How fortunate we live in a time of such advanced technology that we can learn of these concepts from a flip of a switch on our phones, tablets, etc. presented in a clear understanding for the every day common person with no background in this type of science who is interested in increasing their knowledge in this area... amazing! Never stop learning! 👍😉

Wonderful episode. Just curious, do you know anybody you could have on to talk about the upcoming launch of the Near Earth Asteroid Scout (NEA Scout)? It's a solar sail probe that will investigate 1991 VG, a mysterious near earth asteroid that some thought was an expended rocket stage or even an alien probe. I haven't heard very much about the mission at all. It's supposed to be sent up on the maiden flight of the SLS in November. I think it would be fascinating to hear one of the project leads talk about it because I think it's the first time we've ever sent a solar sail probe to do an actual rendezvous. Previously the big solar sail success was the Japanese Ikaros spacecraft, but in 3 years the solar sail on that craft only added 890mph of delta v, because Ikaros only had 3 square feet of sail per lb of mass. The NEA Scout has 29 square feet of sail per lb of mass. So I imagine the performance of the sail should be much more impressive. I'd love to hear a project lead talk about what kind of delta v they hope the solar sail will impart, if the NEA Scout proves solar sails are ready for prime time, if the NEA Scout heralds a new era for very cheap very lightweight asteroid missions, how many targets they might be able to fly by, etc. I mean, NEA Scout is only 31 lbs. And it might rendezvous with an intriguing asteroid and send back all sorts of fascinating imagery. It might rendezvous with multiple targets even. I believe a high resolution camera is the probes sole scientific payload. It's basically a camera, some cold gas thrusters, reactions wheels, and circuit boards bolted to a solar sail. I'm really excited about it and I hope other people are as well. Edit: The lead investigators for NEA Scout are Julie Castillo-Rogez
and Les Johnson. Julie Castillo-Rogez has had a super cool career in science and worked on a lot of neat projects. I bet she'd have a lot to say.

What I wonder is why earth is full of life and micro organisms even in the most deadly areas like water around submerged volcanoes, inside the ice of the Antarctica, even on the bottom of the ocean with zero light and warmth there are bio-illuminscent fish (like the Angler Fish and so on). Even in the Death Valley are many animals - but on more life-friendly almost habitable zones like Mars which can have +20°C degrees celsius on it`s equator there seem to be no life. But maybe there was life a million years ago, and maybe liquid water is the key of life and a planet must have water (or any other liquid) to create and sustain life-forms. The second interesting question is, what brings life to a planet? Earth was a place with lava crystalizing to Pangaea with hot oceans around, the cooling down process took maybe half a millions of years - but what made the first cells like algae and bakteria on a complete empty rock with empty-desert like landscapes and empty oceans earth was a few billion years ago? Have eucaryote cells somehow developed from early plant life in the first stages of the beginning of life?
What is the secret of life and how was the seed for it put on this planet here? Science will probably never be able to answer the question how life how cells are created or just "become" for whatever reason in this universe. Maybe some day finding any form of alien life (and if it`s only algae growing on a rock of another planet) will shed some light on these questions of the secrets of existence.

It's probably lake in many Slavic languages (in one variant or other) and it has been named after a town in Bosna-Hercegovina which in turn has been named after a nearby lake according to Wikipedia.
And the crater used to be a lake.

If they find aquifer lava tubes at the bottom of Hellas which extend deep into the earth, they should actually be guaranteed to find liquid water in direct air contact with the other surface of the planet.

    Olympus Mons…
What’s up with the cliffs the completely surround it? They’re so strange and uniform, as if a circle was cut into the crust and then pushed up from below.
How does something like that form?

Took me a couple of seconds thinking to realise where they are sending the James Webb telescope from - Kiruna - because it wasn't a very Swedish pronunciation of the name. Yes, I'm Swedish and I have been to Kiruna, but not to the Esrange Space Center. I'm so excited about James Webb, so I'm happy that Sweden has a part in it.

I'm a regular listener of the show event horizon, I love everything to do with space and the possibility for life outside this planet. A question for John Michael Godier, I wonder that you ever heard this? Type on youtube - Somebody Else Is on the Moon - Audiobook - by George H. Leonard. It's more than 6 hours talking, but incredible.
