James is probably the one person I'd like to watch more horror games. Just due to the fact he is one RUclips individual that has a connection to games, and not just a love of horror genre, but an actual understanding of the history of it. I think it would be really cool to watch him play a game and listen to talk to him about why a game is scary or why its not.
I love seeing James' reaction to new games because of how much I respect him and I like to know what he thinks of the games I play. Like "this is how far games have come, what do you think?". I don't assume he only plays classics but he has been around for so many generations and I really don't want new games to let him down.
sadly, I doubt that James plays a lot of games apart from the ones on the show. He's such a busy guy, he probably doesnt even have time outside of specific Cinemassacre reserved time slots.
The fact that you play a game without any prior knowledge, no expectations, no hype, no over-produced pre-release coverage, no nothing, is so refreshing. Just two guys having fun with games, it's great. Completely untainted from modern games media. These videos always bring me at least 10 years back.
That nightmare James described is quite an interesting one - mainly because it combines fantastic element with a purely real subconscious fear of founding a person in a situation in which we barely can help and basically see him/her agonizing.
***** There are just other horror games that are more interesting. Amnesia is basically only roaming in the dark, hearing the ocassional monster and running away/hiding. There is nothing interesting to look at other than the the few notes you find laying around, but as far as I recall, James and Mike totally skipped reading any letters and such aswell, so there wouldn't really be any point to continue just for the story. But ey, that's just me.
there are the puzzles, hallucinations and the whole atmosphere, plus item management. In this game, yet interesting to look at, it seemed to through extremly trippy/creepy things at you endlessly without much connection what you do. Did feel a lot less like a video game actually. Seems a bit like a graphic/horror demo.
@@XaxtonRevolution2 he didn't say he was a kid, he just said he had a dream once...I was thinking it had something to do maybe with a repressed memory of his own or maybe it was a piece of himself he's hiding from the public hidden in the walls of his own psyche
thats where its hard to make a choice in design because if things kill you it interrupts the flow of the game. The game tries to tell a story as u are the one unveiling it. If you die u would have to replay alot of the "scares" taking away the little effectiveness the game has already. I would prefer death but i understand their choice
You forgot Amnesia. You can die in that game. And the scary part is caused by the monster being around you somewhere and you having to avoid it. It brings a lot of tension to the game.
Yes, it does. These games are just adventure games which focus less on puzzles and item fidling and more on the story and experience. Also, what would it change if we'd call them games or not? What is the point of your question? You want to discredit this genre by declaring it as non-games? I genuinely don't get it.
"The thought alone that the most beautiful piece of art doesn't have my name on it, is killing me... so, will you marry me?" Shiiiiieeet that was the smoothest line I've ever heard
10:45 Painting no. 1 of 3 from 'Past and Present' by Augustus Leopold Egg. Alot of symbolism in this one. The father is holding the letter of his wife's lover. One half of the apple is on the ground with the pleading mother. The other half of the apple is on the table with a knife through it (knife through the father's heart). His clutched fist indicates his contained anger, he didn't hit her to the ground, she was kneeling before him asking for forgiveness, but fell to the ground after his demand for a divorce (The mother in the series committed adultery; therefore under the moral code of Victorian society disgraced her husband. Divorce is a death sentence for a woman in victorian society). The house of cards (the family structure) is collapsing.
idk what is more surprising- the fact that mike never picked up on it being a dream when james said it MULTIPLE times or that he seemed so calm throughout it when he thought it was real
Mike and James! I loved watching this video! I hope you guys can find the time to make many others like it! I laughed so hard when the jump-scare got me. Its placement is genius. I have watched many other RUclipsrs play this game, but none of them inspired me to buy it or experience it for myself. Thanks a lot, guys. I'm getting this for Halloween!
You compared this to Amnesia--a game from what, 2010? Sure, the graphics here are great, but there is no sense of danger, no helplessness, no death mechanic. I've said it before, but this game is a walking simulator funhouse. Jumpscares and melting paintings. A game like amnesia finds you either risking being seen by a horrific creature by lighting your path, or hiding in the darkness and slowly losing your sanity--falling prey to hallucinations and panic attacks. The two games are apples and oranges.
Furniture flying across the room, old creepy portrait paintings, broken/cordless phone ringing, twitching ghost, ambiguous piano playing somewhere. Jumpscares. So original.
Since I have played Layers Of Fear before, this was a lot of fun seeing you guys go through it and having a lot of the same reactions that I probably had. James summed it up best though with "this house is f***ed up". Thanks so much for doing this video and tackling this game. A true Halloween treat.
Every action has an effect. Open something, turn on or off a light, it all has an effect. There are certain *key* actions that move you towards one of the different endings, those are mostly *fixed in place* .
WFoong98 they said they played amnesia for a couple of hours and didn't even see the monsters. how long does soma take to get started? i'm not saying it's bad.
The picture of "that creepy fuck" at 2:55 is the "Portrait of Antonietta Gonzalez" by Lavinia Fontana (from 1595). Antonietta had hypertrichosis (also commonly called “werewolf syndrome”), which is a rare genetic disorder which causes an abnormal amount of hair on the body. She explains a little of her personal history in the handwritten note which she holds in the portrait
They say that shit because it is quite common for fecal matter to spout off random insults. You can't affect Cinemasscre with that bullshit, they don't endorse your stupid fucking drama. That is celebrated by the sub-humans over on one of the shitty commentary channels. (Like Leafy's)
I'm sure their PC can run the game 60fps since it has Potato system requirements but looks like they captured this footage at around 25fps, would've looked a lot nicer at 30fps.
James, you really should do a James & Mike episode as the Nerd with Mike! At least just once! Like improvising with complaints and swears, I think it would be pretty funny!
I feel like the story of this game is hidden beneath the shell that is the horror theme. The game perfectly shows the struggle of an artist. To have it all, and then sacrifice everything for your passion only to finish and realize that your art is not as perfect as you think it needs to be despite everything you have sacrificed, then to start from scratch at the end.
+daltonpaulvideos It means combine his oversensitive response with no thought put into it with that username and you have a kid who's too young to be commenting.
Yay! So happy to see James playing the game! Was a bit disappointed in the other video that James wasn't there. James never gets scared lol. Maybe this one will finally get him! :P
you guys are awesome. you should do some kind of give away where whoever wins get to come over, eat pizza, drink some rolling rocks and play some games.
It's the story. They skipped a lot of the sequences that put together what is actually happening. It's not just random events there's a correlation between what happened to the man and his family and what you see in the house.
I could watch James & Mike talk about horror and play horror games all day. The genuine enthusiasm is refreshing.
funny because if i remember the game i think its more thriller then horror
@@VTuber_Centralwell lah tee dah

Haha, James' secret was almost out. Great filter during the "dream" story, Mike looked genuinely worried.
James was Mothra. It explains his obsession with Godzilla and his moth like behavior.

you guys should play Alien isolation
James should Solo Resident Evil 7 Demo
Cinemassacre did you stop doing avgn? That was the reason I subscribed. The last time you made one was almost 2 months ago. I'm really upset.
It takes a long time to do episodes. Lol.
Cinemassacre play nightmare house 2 please or fear

18:59 - HAHAHAHAHAHA YOU FUCKS GOT ME HAHAHAHA
That jumpscare. Why ;-;
almost dropped my hot soup bowl
I dropped my elephant ear into the sink -_-

I like the way James dismisses Mike's excitement.
"What was that!?"
"A Poltergeist"

"This reminds me of that part of Ocarina of Time, with..."

To me it was: "GAHHeyIrecognisethatzombie!"
And just to let you know. The face that came up was a zombie from Lucio Fulci's masterpiece, Zombi 2. Or just zombie in America.
Why was it in the video ?? just a jump scare ??
kiran bangera Because Halloween. And to get you a feel how James felt in the dream, I guess.
its pretty much the only scary thing to have happened up until that point xD and it wasnt even something from the game itself ahaha
this would be a perfect vr game
Your VR would be the gaming mom of perfection.
I played it with TrinusVR and Tridef using my phone and a vr headset, it really is so much more terrifying.
Goddammit Eric GTFO
vr is stupid.

It would be perfect for the virtual boy.
Part 2 is set at a haunted octoberfest: Layers of Beer
scariest part of the vid was james's dream

I love how they're laughing and joking while playing this creepy-ass game.
Are they ever going to do a Silent Hill or Resident Evil game?
Should still finish or at least continue Amnesia.
Not worth it honestly.
Haven't heard of that game in forever.

Maybe James's nightmare symbolizes guilt of abandoning projects or putting them on the back burner and forgetting about them.
