Duran Duran performing Secret Oktober live at the house of blues in Chicago IL DD: Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, Warren Cuccurullo with Joe Travers and Wes Wehmiller
The recorded version of Secret Oktober is by far the finest single piece of music that Duran Duran ever made. It's not debatable. It's just a fact. Period. Regarding this video, there are many live versions from the 3 tours in 1997-2001( Ultra Chrome Latex and Steel, Let It Flow, and Pop Trash) but for me this is bar far the best. So simple, so pure.
It's an interesting song and it may be "the finest single piece of music that Duran Duran ever made" for you but definitely not for me. A song put together in a hurry to become the B side of _Union of the Snake_ , with Nick Rhodes firing up a drum machine plus some sequencers and Simon Le Bon improvising a melody on top. It's a song with no hook, musically childish with 3 chords and with nothing innovative into it. Compared to wonderfully written, performed and produced songs such as The Reflex, Union Of The Snake, Shadows On Your Side, Vertigo, Downtown and What Happens Tomorrow this appears just what it is: a song made to fill a place.
When I ran into bassist John Taylor whilst doing auditing work in Hollywood, I explained to him how much I enjoy THIS song! John is my favourite DD member but ironically my fav DD song is Secret Oktober - which doesn't have any basslines!
I was there! About 6 bodies back. Maybe 4th DD concert.. won a ticket through a fan contest! Felt so blessed to see them again. Met Wes Wehmiller out in the hallways after the show.. :( 🙏 Warren really did add so much musicality to their range of style and songwriting through those years: methinks he got far from enough credit for his contributions, even from me, back in those times, and since. Most of all, of course they hadn't likely played this song live before (or at least not that I'd seen), so this was an Extra-Cosmic Treat. THANK YOU DD, and thanks to scorpion09 for the post!!
These are the moments that make DD concerts the best... when they dont play over played songs like Hungry Like the Wolf and Girls on Film. My favorite moments are when they pull the rare or obscure stuff for the true fans, not the ones who just know the first 3 albums singles. Thats what I didnt like about their current 2016/17 tour. It was just a greatest hits tour.
What I like about the mini tour they did this year in the states is that they pulled some out of the closet (Seventh Stranger, Chauffer, Friends of Mine)
for me, this has been a signature song ... I don't know what Simon's relationship is to this lyric, to the song .... but I've always fancied that it's personal for him, simply since his birthday is an October one, as mine is ... it's been this dreamy sort of anthem that's been there as a Stillness throughout my life. Thank you all yet again, Simon, John, Nick, Roger and Andy and your various partners in musical expression .... what a gift for us all
Meno male che sono tornati ad essere al meno in 4 della formazione originale...vedere questi video in cui ci sono solo Simon e Nick ricorda un periodo triste
Wise on a birthday party In a world Full of surprising fireworks And sudden silence Lies on a stranger's bed The new day breaks Like a speeding train On an old friend Ever expected, But never knocking Holding your own In a battered car All night parties Cocktail bars And smile When the butterfly escapes The killing jar
I have had this mp3 forever - had no idea there was a matching video!!! You take the best sex of your life, mix it with a hazy and perfect breeze and you have this song.
hmmm. I wondered that as well. I always thought Warren was saying; "wait for it, wait". but - I could be totally wrong. I was there that night of this show - but it was so long ago - I couldn't recall. you just may be right about him saying something about the lights. also - thanks so much for uploading this video. this brings back so many happy memories for me. plus - I always LOVED this version of Secret Oktober. well - i love the original - but prefer this version. it's so beautiful.
They made this totally Pop Trash...one would never know it was Seven and the Ragged Tiger ...unless, of course ,you knew it was from the extra on the 12 inch of Union of the Snake...weird for me to hear it in this context. I saw them for this tour.. they didn't perform it. An extra lyric...pretty cool guys...pretty fuckin cool!
Warren and AT so much better than current guitarist!!!!!!!!!!! Warren was best to me.....he must have come up with the idea of the effects he's using on the guitar - totally different to the original recording. Sounds like flanger effect?
He left the band a couple of years before this and didn't return again until the original line up re-united for the reunion concerts that preceded the Astronaut album.
I love the way this version captures the rich textures of simons voice
sexiest version of this song i've EVER heard! holy crap!
The man asked for honey ! You gotta love Simon. I could live in this song forever
Y'know what else is great about this? The absence of glowing rectangles in the audience.
omg Warren, you are amazing, so much passion, so much power, unique, just you and your guitar... i love Duran Duran and I love you
Warren quit Duran Duran a long time ago!
Filipe Matias lebramos a isse homme
Do you like andy? Andy and warren
Warren is planned to play for DD again 24 years after this performance
Simon is such a poet...amazing lyrics...always!
robbelliii This song is actualy Nick's :d

I agree!!!!
John Rappaport Warren really does the song justice here.

Thank you Nick for your love of Halloween and for the idea of a Halloween album ! What a phenomenal album !!!!
When I ran into bassist John Taylor whilst doing auditing work in Hollywood, I explained to him how much I enjoy THIS song! John is my favourite DD member but ironically my fav DD song is Secret Oktober - which doesn't have any basslines!
Which totally explains why this version has a bassline .... (this is possibly one of my favourite versions of any track, ever)
Beautiful song, my favorite DD song❤️ Simon's voice is haunting❤️
LOVE this version....so slinky and theatrical!!
@5:33 Simon's gettin' all Jim Morrison on us!
I wanted to be Simon as a kid. :)
Beautful, BIG & innocent eyes.......
Warren's contributions to D2 is sorely missed... this and Save a Prayer from that same tour were absolutely spellbinding... he is missed. :(
I was there! About 6 bodies back. Maybe 4th DD concert.. won a ticket through a fan contest!

Bellissima voce di Simon 💞😘
I love what Warren does with the guitar line here ... symphonic treatment ... spatial expansiveness
Love Simon’s screaming

They did “Hold Back The Rain” in Vegas @ The Chelsea, December 2017
Fantastic! 🎶💋🎶
The greatest hits is how you indoctrinate the next generation, though.
I was at that show. Simon had a bit of a sore throat. At one point he took a drink of water and sprayed it all over the crowd. And I caught his cold.
this is the best version ever of this song , melt me , make me fly ... i love so much this ! awesome warren !! i love DD
because i can never get enough or tired of this !! best SO version ever !!! only warren !
This is one of their many masterpiece that's so underrated it's beautiful and awesome
Amazing version, the absolute best!
I have NEVER seen Simon in a cowboy hat, until now! Well.........I guess there's a first time for everything. .......
And the crowd loses their minds at 1:46. Simon is the King of He-Can-Get-It-ness.

Warren!! You are amazing!
Wise on a birthday party
In a world
Full of surprising fireworks
And sudden silence
Lies on a stranger's bed
The new day breaks
Like a speeding train
On an old friend
Ever expected,
But never knocking
Holding your own
In a battered car
All night parties
Cocktail bars
And smile
When the butterfly escapes
The killing jar
I love when they just do music
So beaytiful...I beeded this to understand better...thank uou!
i just feel like melting ... so sexy so soft so amazing ... like warren ... for ever duranie !
Increíble la profundidad ,.guau..Esta es la prueba de que la interpretación puede cambiarlo todo. La versión original no tiene nada con esto.
Think you so much
@RoccioDD I am back again watcing again for the 100th time. I don't get sick of it. LOL
Wow! look like featuring Robert Smith , in the and feat Jim Morrison
Oh Man I can imagine the Cure covering this..it would be unbelievable

Great gunshot at 4'15👍
Whoosh! 😍💋
Bellissima canzone che non è apprezzata come dovrebbe essere
Sorry Simon, I won't tease anymore, we know it's your birthday, Happy Birthday!
VERYNICE 👍
@RocioDD It certainly is! I uploaded this version awhile back, but I'm glad to see someone has offered the live video!
*melt*
The bests performance ever.
I have an autographed (by Nick) drum head from this concert!
@RocioDD I second that! Warren really stood out with his playing in DD. =D
I sure want to ride that Cowboy!
👍
This is such a beautiful song... I miss Warren too.

"Lights Alex light" i think
Warren le aporta a esta versión, esa atmósfera dark con el sonido tan distorsionado de esa Gibson, único Warren y se lo extraña.
What was the date of this? Which HOB was it?
Pucci Cinzia Novembre 1963😀😀😀
Why is there no john taylor at this performance? I did read in his book about a time he punched a glass and couldnt play.
He left the band a couple of years before this and didn't return again until the original line up re-united for the reunion concerts that preceded the Astronaut album.
Pucci Cinzia Scorpione Simon Lebon 😀😀😀
DD DESTROYING ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS
Warren is the best from DD
Not the same without John there. He is the glue that keeps them great! This is not great!
