So different but awesome none the less. Don't know why people aren't liking the vocals
I think they were not mixed well into the music. The levels were off or something so it is actually a bit too high compared to the level of the music. I could clearly hear the bass, but Nick's keys were just a little low, I think. Anyway, it can throw the sound off plus this was raw compared to the album version. Some people don't like a raw sounding performance.

Note: John Taylor isn't playing bass here because this was actually the second time he left Duran Duran for a while due to his drug addiction and he went to rehab (the first time he left Duran Duran was in 1985 to form The Power Station besides making a solo record and another one with the band Neurotic Outsiders)!
I think John was tired of the corporate music and the direction DD had taken after years. In his personal life he was dealing with some problems as you mention.
Aparte de sus adicciones, tanto John como Andy Taylor dejaron la banda porque en el fondo se creían rockeros, por eso no podían lidiar con el sonido y la línea de música que el combo Nick & Simon imprimieron a la banda desde su primer álbum. Hasta la fecha John se siente dueño del grupo junto con Nick, por ser los fundadores, sin acordarse que dejó la banda en 2 ocasiones porque no le gustaba lo que hacían y ahora cree que con tatuarse en el brazo DD ya por eso siempre amó a la banda y su música. Sus fans le compran esa farsa, pero él pasó años renegando de la banda y de su música, quizás desde el 2011 se le calmó su desdén, porque empezó a entender la grandeza de la banda a través de los ojos de otros artistas. Andy y John en sus respectivas bandas fuera de Duran Duran tocan un 'rock' muy blando y pobre, sin un estilo que llame la atención, si para ellos eso es rock, saben muy poco del género. No son The Who, Soundgarden, etc., ni de broma. Lo que realmente siempre quisieron fue hacerse del liderazgo absoluto de la banda, pero nunca pudieron con Nick y sus sistetizadores ni con Simon en las cuestiones de melodías, letras, canto y presencia en el escenario, basta con verlos en vivo en las pocas grabaciones que hicieron y que se pueden ver por RUclips para notarlo.

Would have been perfect without the vocal.
It doesn't sound like it was mixed well. The vocal is actually too high, and as much as I love Simon and could listen to him sing anything or even just speak, Parts of the music needed to be more present to blend with the vocal or something, It just sounds off. Of course, this was also during the time when Simon was not totally feeling it all the time. The start of his depression after John left.
