Nah, the end of GoT was pretty bad. From a cinematic and story-building/ending standpoint, its just bad. They turned John Snow into an actual wimp, Tyrion got way too dramatic about Bran, a definitepy great character, sure, but he made his coming about some kind of legendary thing and bloated more than Bran would ever want. Nothing about the end actually ends anything. It just kinda stops and John Snow lives the rest of his life past the wall, completely destroying his entire position as the true king. Not saying hed actually stay or want to be king, but it was the whole point of him as a character

One of the articles shown in this video is by an MCU fan who little brother, when he went to see GotG with her, fell in love with Drax at the line about catching things trying to go over his head... As she describes it, her brother at that point turned to her and said, “He’s like me! He can’t do metaphors!” And spent the rest of the movie enraptured by Drax. She basically thanked Marvel for giving her brother a hero he could relate to, someone like him who is also a badass.
Dave Bautista saw the article, and was clearly delighted that his character connected for someone so much. I don’t think he, and perhaps even James Gunn, went in intending for Drax to be read as austistic, BUT it’s a nice bonus the character gives us.

I was never diagnosed. I think I'm just anti-social, and I intentionally cultivate some of these traits. However, it's taken decades to take things much less literal. I have a friend who is definitely Aspergers. Only almost four decades of friendship allows her to recognize my face and allows me to protect her from some who don't understand her. She took care of me when I needed help and was being a right bastard to her - probably her Asperger's didn't let her pick up that I was being, say, unfriendly - and now I'm trying to look out for her when nobody else will. She is loyal to the few people who have taken the time to know her, and she is worth knowing. Annoying at times, but then, so am I. I've learned to adapt to provide signals she can recognize.

Well Drax isn't autistic nor can he be. For one autism is human specific. Two, Drax's entire race are literal, that's just how they mentally and emotionally function. Thirdly to Drax we are autistic, unable to be precise and direct. We lack the ability to be literal all the time.

And your final sentences are heavily stereotyped.
As you say, humanity in general lacks the ability to always be literal, or rather, humans use non-literal communication to convey ideas in a less straight forward manner. Such as how Drax isn't literally Autistic, but can be understood as an allegory of the Autistic experience to some extent.

I definitely do agree Drax is meant to represent the spectrum, maybe in universe he is just an alien, but that is certainly how someone with Autism feels, like an alien amongst a different species, at times at least.
I also wanna say that this is a good example of how to weave a form of representation into media properly, Drax is an amazing character, and he represents the spectrum, he isn't a character that is made to represent the spectrum first.

Id not say its the next stage. We know for a fact autism impedes many comprehension skills. But it can be a great boost in some cases, leading to a superior genius lv ability in understanding a type of systems.
So id say its not better but its not out right worst either. Everything has its benefits and disadvantages. Is the loss in social cues really that bad? Or is the boost in subject type intelligence worth the lack in social or abstract thought?
Im high on the antisocial personality disorder scale. It doesn't stop me from understanding or picking up on social cues. Rather its enhanced it. I just don't feel for other people as much as normal people do. I like it a lot and see it as more valuable than the loss in emotions for others.
I as a kid did a lot of "bad" stuff, so my parents and school long story, had me tested for stuff and found out i was pretty much a "sociopath". Doctors really don't like to call it that cuz it misses the nuances held with antisocial disabilities. All in all disabilities can be great tools counting on perspectives. Im glad u count urs as a boost.

Great vid. I bloody love how Drax takes a bunch of typically autistic traits and turns them into something adorable. I myself have been diagnosed with slightly different variations of autism so often, and I've had so many people, especially in places of authority, stereotype me, that it usually makes me sick when people take the label very seriously.
I have seen so many different people with such labels, and I've had so many slightly different diagnoses, that I can't help but just want people to treat "autistic people" as just them. I find, from my experiences of being around them all my life, that the only thing that they truly have in common, is brutally honest authenticity, and if you ask me, we need more of that in the world. Besides that, they are just like others. There are just certain problems they tend to have a bit more of than others. And usually those problems are things nearly everyone has trouble with sometimes, like overstimulation.
I really hope instead of people taking those labels seriously to the point of treating "autists" like retards, that they will instead simply listen to the person involved. Usually all people need, including those with autism, is simply to be heard, and to understand that people are listening to what they specifically want. Not some kind of stereotype. By making fun of it in a positive way, like with Drax, the weight of those labels is taken off a little bit, and I really hope more things like that will happen. In the end people shouldn't go by labels, that just causes discrimination. They should judge a person as an individual, and I can assure you, people with autism are just as diverse as anyone else. And since they are very honest, they usually will tell you what it is they want or need.

I like how you acknowledged the intensity of his emotions and his tendency to give into them despite his typical stoic demeanor in his "constant tone of voice." I think that's one misconception about autism. That we don't seem to "care" much, especially when it comes to empathy. In reality, it seems to be the opposite: we feel too much. And this too is demonstrated beautifully in Drax's interactions with Mantis. For example, when she touches him while he's laughing and says, "I have never felt such humor!"

The way Drax is written is similar to how the Farscape character D’Argo is written which James Gunn is a fan of. Farscape is a science fiction show about the adventures of Astronaut John Crichton and his Alien friends who are fugitives on the run from a Totalitarian space military called the Peacekeepers. D’Argo is a Luxan warrior who is imprisoned for the death of his wife Lo-lan who is part of the same alien race Peacekeepers are part of, Sebeceans. Only he was actually framed for the murder. The actual murder is a Peacekeeper, his brother in law, Makton. Since D’Argo is Luxan he has super strength, a tongue that temporarily stun you and has the tendency to angry outbursts which he does take time to control. He is a very wise character though. All four seasons of the show are on Amazon Prime.

Drax is an exemplar of his people, so to them, whatever way he's wired would be considered "neurotypical." In our world, "autism" literally means "withdrawn into oneself." The defining trait is an inability to comprehend how one's actions (or inaction) affect others and the world around them. Contrariwise, Drax doesn't think twice about throwing himself in harm's way to protect others. So maybe the literal definition of autism might be a bit askew. Or perhaps too many people are diagnosed with it by incompetent quacks.
*Note:* Some theorists pontificate that autism might be the result of a malfunction of some portion of the right hemisphere of the brain, generally regarded as the "social brain." It has something to do with the importation of information, especially social information, from the external world into the inner mind.

When you think about Drax, he can be a little frightening. That one scene where he skewers 5 or 6 people (not a faceless army, but basically Human Beings just doing their job), and afterwards gives us all this cutest of smiles.....something you associate with sociopaths (at least Wolverine acknowledged the fact that "He was the best there was at what he did, but what he did wasn't very pretty" ^_^).
I hadn't thought about thinking of Drax as autistic, but being exposed to this from, of all places, "Big Bang Theory" (and Sheldon, of course), it does make his character more interesting, if perhaps a little sadder.

Drax is loyal and loves his adopted family with every bit of his being. I never thought about him being on the spectrum. In that light, his huge perceived personality shift between GotGv1 and GotGv2 isn't a shift at all; it's Drax opening up to his friends and learning social actions he never experienced on his home world. He didn't always learn the best lesson from his friends, but considering the rest of the team, that is not surprising. Thank you for helping me see him in a new light. I'm autistic too BUT... I'm gonna have to disagree with you. Drax is just a "dumb" but wholesome destructive brawler. The closest similarity I can think of is Ramjet from The Transformers. Ramjet, like Drax is Destructive and does things without plan or strategy. Only difference is Ramjet isn't wholesome but a villian. A dumb villain. To quote Megatron, "I have Morons (referring to Ramjet and his team) in my team". Drax, on the other hand maybe "dumb" but wholesome, however he can get real when the time comes, especially when he was with Mantis

"I wasn't listening, I was thinking of something else" "I stopped listening after you said we needed a plan" These scenes are very relatable. When you deal with auditory processing disorder (which commonly coexists with autism) and struggle with paying attention, you find yourself fantasy thinking and day dreaming instead of focusing on important things.

He isn't autistic. Autism is a human issue alone. To Drax's race we are autistic. From his perspective we talk without purpose, lacking direction. We shouldn't place human mental states on other species.
We know there is a big difference between mammals and birds in regards to social and emotional systems. Birds are more radical and self harming. Mammals are more stable. Equal intelligent birds to mammals shows that birds are less adaptable to new situations and require heavy maintenance.

I love this video. I never thought of Drax as Autistic, but I agree with you that he is a good example of this in media. I think another good example is Newt from Fantastic Beasts. Personally when I hear people complain about him being boring, or confusing I suspect they haven't made the connection I have. And I find him fascinating as a result.
In fact I'm starting to become uncomfortable with interpreting as many fictional characters as autistic in some way as I have. I feel like maybe I'm projecting too much. Especially since I'm someone who doesn't like to dwell on my autism. In fact I still find it weird to consider that there is a Autism Community. Its just always been me dealing with it my way. It informs who I am but it isn't part of my Identity. Dunno why i went of on that. Not sure how relevant that was but hey. I did get a small thrill from this video and you inferring your autism in a casual manner. It made me think, oh wow, someone like me

As an autistic person watching this the only conclusion I can draw is that the only way I will ever get the respect I am due is if I stick to "a strict diet of green eggs and ham" and become as ripped as Drax the Destroyer. It occurs to me perhaps the reason he is respected is *because* he is huge. "See? Now you respect me, because I'm a threat. That's the way it works" Syndrome, from The Incredibles 2004. Probably not the takeaway you intended but... Well I tried being nice, the world is just too Allistic and nobody is ever interested in meeting you halfway because they can't "see" your need.

  • @VioletJazz
    @VioletJazz 4 года назад

Your theroy makes sense. in human terms, his entire species might be on the spectrum. It is a neat reference, but if everyone of his kind behaves like this, that's technically not autism, just their nature. They are autistic-like by nature in human terms. But him being on the spectrum is an interesting concept of how most aliens in the MCU are similar to humans. Each got their unique quirks, just like humans.

“Representation” is a very loaded thing that is often counterproductive. Because it is such a finicky thing, it requires balance that studios do not meet and therefore representation becomes forced and racist and sexist; and when they think it is a step forward, it is actually a step backwards. That is, of course, if they weren’t actually trying to force it, and Most of the time, that seems to be exactly what they do. That being said, I don’t think Drax is representation of any kind. If people feel a deep connection with the character, that is great. But they didn’t make him like that for that purpose.

No not at all. It's all a part of being on a "spectrum." Autistic people will bear and lack certain behaviors that other autistic people do not. For example... most people on the spectrum tend to not get sarcasm, yet I do!

      It's one quirk of many.
Besides, autists can learn the language of metaphors; we just may need a moment to catch on that it is one. When I come across a new one, I still stagger at times, but those I already know are not fazing me anymore and they're integrated in my vocabulary. I also come up with my own in order to help other people understand what I try to convey.

A couple times in the video, you pointed out that his autistic traits weren't seen as something to poke fun of, and that he's portrayed as someone the audience can respect.
But would the same have been true if he wasn't a physically strong, hyper-masculine guy? What if he was just a regular guy, who exhibited those quirks?
I guess I'm trying to say that the media, and society in general, often has double standards when it comes to people in the spectrum. Like being neurodivergent is only seen as "okay" as long as the person in question happens to be super attractive, or physically intimidating.

This has never been mentioned before as far as I can tell, but Dwight Schrute from The Office (US) definitely has Aspergers. He's probably my favorite character besides Michael Scott but that's a given. Dwight's condition is quite over exaggerated for the character and comedy of the show but that's understandable.
