- In the upcoming WolfQuest Saga,* pups will keep growing -- changing from cute little furballs into enthusiastic, awkward teenagers who must plunge in and learn how to hunt the hard way. These older pups needed some new music tracks that captured their gangly charm -- and today's devblog look at how WolfQuest composer Tim Buzza approached this challenge. Tim's music has been at the heart of WolfQuest since the very beginning, and we're delighted with what he came up with for these new tracks. Enjoy this peek into his creative process!
* The upcoming WolfQuest Saga is "the rest of the game." Your pups will continue to grow into the fall and beyond, learning to hunt under your supervision, and then becoming yearlings when next year's pups are born. Time will continue progressing through the years until you die. The Saga is currently in development but we do not have a release date for it.

there's something about the banjo (characterizing the pups) fusing with the guitar in the hunt theme that makes it sound like a transition between a youngster into an adult, like this is the turning point for them. there's even something proud about the guitar and the banjo together, like the parent watching their child grow and take this big step in their life. ugh, why is it making me emotional!?

HUGE kudos to this guy. A banjo has got to be one of the hardest instruments to learn how to play - and certainly one of the hardest string instruments! And he did it to play this beautiful, new, fun music. You're awesome. Just straight up awesome.
I love learning about the reasons behind certain music tracks and the way wolfquest does it is SOOO good using certain instruments for certain wolves in the pack
wolfquest is one of the only games i never turn off the music for 😭
Hearing the melodies all put together immediately put a smile on my face!!! I love the fact that the parents still being the adults and the puppies bringing in the fun is present in the music.
Maybe even changing the fight music and chill music to be a little different in the fall/winter (when you just yearlings and no puppies). Even adding a little bit of the hunting melody when at the rendezvous during the summer and the puppies are hunting toads and the new little rodents! That be epic as well!
This is amazing to hear the real recording of the music! Hearing the music makes me think I finished a quest or something haha.
This was such a cool idea. Kudos to everyone involved. I know the programmers and animators get a lot of the spotlight, but I’ve always held a deep sense of appreciation for the music in here, now even more so.
This guy is amazing! The way he talks about the music and giving the adults and pups their own "instrument", as well as how he represents the wolves in different ways using the music is just so interesting!
This game has the most amazing music development, I've never once gotten bored or annoyed with the soundtrack.

The hunting with pups theme almost sounds ominous at points, I find it very fitting for this game, hunts are fun and high energy but also risky for the young pups
looking forward to seeing how playable pups will work in the saga, will we still be able to play as our grown pups?
I'm quite certain we'll still be able to play as the grown pups, it'd be a really stupid move to take that feature away cos it's a massive part of the gameplay for a lot of players lol
I absolutely love the symbolism with every instrument. You guys are amazing!
I've noticed that the player wolves have the Bark emote! Not the soft woof, but the alarm bark to warn the pack of danger. And when danger seems to lurk and approach, our mate never lets out even a little woof. I hope in the Saga update our mates will have some alert commands, maybe the slightly older subordinates too instead of running around fearfully or rushing in to fight whatever may threaten the pups lol.
hey tim! not sure if you ever read the comments, but i want you to know that that slough creek music at 0:16 is probably what i would describe as "the music of my childhood". i grew up OBSESSED with wolfquest, with my favorite always being the slough creek update, and the amount of times i heard that music is innumerable. honestly just hearing it made me nostalgic. i'll never forget as a child always drowning 3 of my 4 wolf pups in the river so that i only had to work on protecting one for the whole game LOL. anyways, i'm 21 now so i really did grow up with that music in my ears, so, i guess what i'm really saying is, thank you! your music has had a far greater impact than you probably think :)

Im loving the amount of effort to create the game... its just amazing.
Sure, music is there to make you feel something, but also to make the game, less empty.

OH I LOVE IT SO MUCH!! The upgrade to Banjo was so good. I can't- The words have left me. I don't have words. That's so beautiful. Gosh, mixing the themes, making them more "grown-up" for babies- It's like watching them grow up with music and after playing this game for so many years, that is not an ending I ever thought I would see. They've always been "puppies" to me and now they'll be old enough to take care of themselves! The emotional attachments I will have with my pack now will appear superficial with the saga update.
I already pay such close attention to them (I have a dedicated notebook divided into sections with all my wolves and their babies, with their babies' personalities and own stories being noted down under their names before getting their own section in the book when they grow up) but now watching them develop further into their personalities and watching them become more individual and eventually leave will CRUSH me like Shelter 2 did...

This might be my favorite devblog yet. I love seeing the progress of how everything looks but seeing the music tie it all together is beautiful. It’s like being able to control a movie. Music is so so so important; more game developers need to realize that these details make for a truly beautiful diamond of a game. Wolfquest is so perfect even with its faults. Truly my favorite game♥️

The Wolfquest soundtracks have been consistently wonderful. Each song fits its respective situation / theme perfectly. Hearing the pups' new songs made me tear up a little, because it really does feel like you're hearing your babies grow up and get their own groove! I love this whole team so much!

You should record multiple takes of the same song and have the game choose them randomly when the song is cued. It's still the same music, but very slight little changes would probably make it feel more wild and alive :) just a suggestion!
I like your suggestion. Though remember that WolfQuest has a dynamic music layering system.
So really the game is already prepared to make little tweaks on the fly while you're playing, as appropriate for the situation.
That's something Mr Buzza can't really convey easily during one of these "stand up" presentations, but more something Tommi and his team have to take care of on the back end. Scroll way back to the old "Play That Wolfy Music" devblog for more about how that works, though that's a VERY old devblog talking about the original implementation.
This is INCREDIBLE. The amount of thought, effort, and love that has went into this game - down to every bar of music is just astounding to me. Videos like these remind me just how thoroughly loved and adored this game is.
Wow. Just wow! The puppy theme in the hunt music - seeing the parents’ theme coincide and compete with the puppies’ just amazes me to no end. The deep, rich storytelling in every aspect of this game is just so breathtaking!!!
I don't think wolfquest would be the same without Tim Buzza's music, it really is amazing and adds wo kuch life to the game. Im not sure who played the music in the old game but if was amazing too!

every wolfquest devlog is my favorite video on this site ;_; i love when each piece of the game gets talked thru the processes, the music has always been such a staple for wolf quest and the banjo melody for the pups is just the sweetest thing!
Tim Buzza is an absolute genius and his music will always be an important part of my childhood. It’s so great to hear about how he develops these songs with so much detail based off a wolf game 😂

I love the little leitmotifs in action during the elk hunt ost. Even got a little emotional when I heard the pups come in.
And the music itself sounds wonderful, the wandering music at the beggining (at least I assume that's what it is) did not have to slap that hard, yet it did.

I've been playing this game since I was 10 years old and now im 22!! I've been watching the dev blog since then and you've made a really big progress. I always played it when i had the chance and nowadays I can still say its my favourite game over all the others I play. gosh the amount of thought that was put into creating such wonderful music! I’m always in awe of the dedication the WQ team has to the game but my god if this doesn’t show that you guys are willing to go the extra mile to make the game just that little bit more special I don’t know what would!

I've always loved the music in wolf quest, it set the mood wonderfully for me. So this video was a treat to watch, seeing how much love went in to putting the music together!
Wolfquest is such a great game that has come so, so far! I still remember playing the original as an iPad kid XD!
These are the things that I would most like to see in the game in the future, Saga or otherwise. (Please understand this is not a criticism of the devs or the game, I think it’s wonderful and they have done an amazing job - this is just my wishlist.)
1. Applying the injury system to pups. This would make a lot of sense in connection with the Saga if the pups could be injured when picked up by bears or cougars, especially as they start growing up. It would also make sense if they took longer to heal than adult wolves, considering their growth plates are still developing and all that.
2. Spontaneous Scarring. There could be a small chance of getting a customization scar when hit, maybe an option you could turn on and off in settings in case you don’t want that. Maybe also separate the scars on the Life is Rough coats so they could be added to any coat.
3. Add drowning back! I like that pups can now swim, but if you or your pups wakefulness is empty, it should make sense that swimming wouldn’t go well.
4. More animals! Cow/calf bison and bighorn sheep are obviously priority, but aside from that there are plenty of animals that could be added (black bears, otters, and porcupines just to name a few)
5. Allowing players to attack stranger wolf dens. I know the devs originally said they wouldn’t add that as it’s usually something only bigger packs do, but the Saga will change that as your pups grow up… and it would just be fun to return the gesture, especially on multiplayer.
6. Dispersing in groups. I’m no developer, so I don’t know how difficult this would be technologically, but allowing 2nd+ generation pups to disperse with their siblings would be an interesting twist.
7. Sister map to LR. Maybe like an abandoned Native American civilization? It would just be cool to not be stuck on one map for the entirety of your wolf’s life if you choose LR, to have somewhere to move back and forth from like on the Yellowstone maps.
8. More variety with collectibles. What if there were a variety of collectibles that could spawn in a wide variety of places like antlers and skulls?
9. Mate perks. Having minorly helpful perks that your mate got on their birthday, perhaps randomly chosen or personality-based.
10. Wolf badges. This is gonna sound really weird, but scouts collect badges throughout their scout-hood. What about, instead of just you as the player collecting achievements, your individual wolves had “badge patches” of every achievement they specifically have collected through their life? Obviously every wolf would have the basic ones, but it would be cool to look at their life and see what makes/made them special.

So excited! Making the soundtrack is an art form that I have much respect for - the fact that you take the time to perfect the feeling that comes with the music to fit the gameplay is admirable. Some animal simulator games just put in some intense music, some ambience, light music for light moments, and they're done. I get that not everyone has the budget for these things, but it makes a game so much more immersive and enjoyable!
