Idunno. Beauty has its place. You cherish and care for things you love. I EDC'd a G3 G19 for forever, and it was a blocky brick. I eventually got a custom barrel and custom slide with serrations & lightening cuts. Suddenly shooting it at the range instead of my more "fun" options became less a chore and more a desire. I was more diligent in servicing it. Just because it was prettier.

When my mom (71 at the time and 4'10" tall) I showed her the basics and rented several different 9mm and .380 pistols. This was about 6 years ago and my range membership included "free" rentals so she tried probably 10 or 12 different models and 3 or 4 trips to the range. She chose the Sig Sauer P238 and loved it. Since then she has passed and I have it, I carry it more than any other of my CCW options. When I have a new shooter or when I take someone to the range they always ask me to bring mom's p238, it's kind of a fan favorite. My primary firearms are 1911's, which this is very similar to. Mom did watch your videos and was a fan, she found you to be very informative, entertaining and an impressive shooter. I put Hogue rubber grips, grabbed a few 7 round mags and carry it almost daily. Someday's it's my backup, someday's it's my primary.

Years ago, 2005 or so, I arranged a range day for my car club. Others had done, like wine tasting trips, or a tour of the Yuengling brewery in Pottstown. Odd, in retrospect, that the car clubs stuff revolved around alcohol, but anyway... I was amazed at how many of us gearheads showed up with their own guns, even as I'd arranged with the club to have their NRA instructors instruct. Seriously, a class 3 Thompson M1 and an UZI. I'd brought a couple of .22's for the newbies, plus a .32 PP, a 9mm Firestar, and a .45 P90. And like 2 boxes of ammo for each. One of my buddies brought his wife, whom I'd never met, to shoot for the first time. She did the .22 intro stuff, then came over to the centerfire range and shot my stuff. 4'10, maybe. 90 lbs soaking wet, maybe. I actually had to argue her out of shooting all my .45 ammo. Store bought hardball. Other peeps may wanna shoot it, I said. F' em, this is fun, she said. Shot my .32, 9mm, but no, wanted more .45. Coupla months later, her husband bought her a .45 1911 for her birthday. 😀 Hopefully a reloading rig as well...dunno. People are weird, or people are people. 😆

She lost a lot of strength due to the chemo treatments and was afraid she wouldn't be able to manipulate the P238 slide or manage the recoil. So I purchased a Taurus TX22 (16 Round) and put a weapon light on it. Even at her weakest we would still go shooting and she was able to handle the TX22. Being able to shoot the TX22, with accuracy really gave her a confidence boost in knowing that IF someone broke into her home she could defend herself effectively. I believe that confidence might have extended the time we had with her, because her stress levels had been reduced.

You are right when you said you won't have the time to use your sights in a gunfight and in law enforcement, I always knew that the bad guy is most likely going to get the first round off and you can only hope he misses and you can return fire quickly and accurately. Well, it's distance dependent. I believe Larry Vickers said the specific distance cutoffs the Navy Seals use for point shooting vs sight shooting. Might of been 25 feet/meters? But he also said their was one for reloading primary vs switching to secondary (I think that was 25 meters?).

The carry piece you chose should point naturally for you to help make good hits, and you need to practice. I have a different view. We are not police or the military putting ourselves into dangerous situations on a daily basis. I used to carry one in the chamber when I started because everyone said I should. They always told me, what if you someone attacks you and you don't see it coming? Well, I'm a martial artist with almost 30 years of training now. I maintain a good situational awareness and if someone is attacking me and I failed to see it coming, then I really messed up and a loaded gun might not help at this point. If someone is that close that I can go hand to hand combat, I'll do that instead of trying to pull my weapon with an assailant attacking me until I can put some distance between me and him. I've also trained myself to rack a round in the gun as I pull it from it's holster. As a civilian, shooting someone is really the last thing you want to do. You will most likely get sued and spend a LOT of your money protecting yourself in court.
Basically, the first thing I learned about carrying is that you need to take your ego out of the equation and try to avoid conflict when ever possible!

Try to visualize how and if those situations might have ended differently if the armed citizen had been carrying with an empty chamber. Saying you would do this or that is disingenuous. You do not know what you would do until it happens, then you can tell everyone what you DID do. These are very commonly not thought through actions, but REactions based on subconscious muscle memory. As has been said by many famous leaders, no plan survives first contact with the enemy. You are 100% correct that shooting another person is the absolute last resort.

I have no idea why anyone would want to put either smooth plastic, pearlescent plastic, or genuine mother of pearl grip stocks on any gun.
Why would any person want his/her gun harder to maintain a firm grip on, especially a gun intended for the most dire of circumstances?
Install checkered or properly stippled grip stocks or high quality textured medium-soft rubber grips and have no worries about maintaining a proper shooting grip.

As a life long precision shooter, I knew how to shoot, but that was about it. Funny anecdote. My buddy went with me to train the second time. He had a Ruger 1911-ish and a P238. After training, he replaced both of them with Glock 9mm. Safety? Decock? Yeah, funk that. Anywho, glad you’re back.

Hi Kirstin. I do appreciate your videos and what you do for our community.
After 45 years of shooting and 30 of those were intense military, your most true and important statements were about training. Muscle memory can and will save a life or two!!! Attitude helps… meaning be the wolf and not the rabbit. Steel yourself against about getting shot… meaning expect it and predetermine to live with it and keep going!!! There is nothing normal, common or fun about a gun fight. Win that one and then prepare for the other two (self doubt/guilt and legal).
    Thanks again.

I like the 1911 style pistol that you used in this video. The safety, hammer and trigger are good training items to learn. These processes of taking the safety off, or watching the hammer can carry over to other pistols if you are looking for something different. The 1911 and this Sig is a very safe gun. In other videos I have seen have mentioned that other people that have not trained with the 1911 style would have difficulty of using the gun on the owner. The point of carrying is to have a chance of life. If you are in a bad shooting situation your pistol is your chance of staying alive. Bless you and keep up the great job.

Each of them require a little different touch but are all adequate for my purposes.

One of the best intro to concealed carry I have seen Kirsten. Today, there are so many options out there, no one should buy without trying the firearm out. I want to reinforce one of your comments...train, train, train. Sights are great for target shooting and precision. When it comes to self defense, you rarely get the chance for that. Muscle memory will get you a level of proficiency that will combine reasonable accuracy and speed. I train with a simple 81/2" X 11" sheet of paper (that is the size of the center of mass). At 7 yards, you want to be capable of drawing, firing, and keep all of your shots in that piece of paper. The more you do this, the faster you will become. In self defense, that is the difference between life and death.

    You nailed it:
    380 vs 9 vs 40 vs whatever.
    Hammer vs striker.
    Safety vs no safety.
    Chambered vs not chambered.
    Aimed vs Point.
And so many other factors, but the secret to any of those decisions is train, train, train, train, train, train, train, train, train, train, train, and then train some more.
Whatever you decide to do, if you train that way, you will be effective, instinctual and fast. Are there better ways for others to do things? Absolutely, but you aren't them and they aren't you. Train like YOUR life depends on it, and I guarantee not only will you become good at it, you will most definitely learn things that might even make you change your mind about previous decisions. It's called learning.
I've had many students come to class thinking they already knew what they wanted, but after learning some new things about themselves and their guns, also changed their minds about how they wanted to do things, and many times, even got different guns that better suited their new shooting styles and confidence levels.

Great video! Thank you! As a newer cc holder (5 years), I’ve tried a few different styles. My little sig 380 like yours never fed perfectly, probably because of my big hands and loose grip. Worse, I simply wasn’t comfortable carrying a mini 1911 chambered. To me, didn’t feel safe, even if it was. I couldn’t get over it and sold it. Also tried a good hammerless, but I just didn’t like it. Finally happened on a double/single action Walther, I liked it but could not justify the cost. I now carry a Bursa Thunder in 380, cc version. Still a few rare feeding problems, but otherwise kinda perfect! It’s small, smooth, I hit pretty well with it. I feel safe carrying chambered, safety off due to its double action first shot. Affordable, too. I’ve carried it nearly exclusively for 3-4 years.

Here’s an interesting idea, if you could put together some of the contenders for the 9 mm concealed carry gun, that would be cool to see a walkthrough of evaluating them. The .380 got a bad reputation during the days when the only ammunition available was full metal jacket "ball" ammo (Newsflash: as did 9mm). Today, a .380 loaded with modern defensive ammo is a potent package, and in most cases, a very small, easily concealable package. A Ruger LCP II is my "goto" carry weapon. Fits easily in a front pants pocket (in a good holster, of course). Yes, it is a compromise of size versus stopping power and magazine capacity. That said, I'm a proponent of "the ideal carry pistol is the one that you ACTUALLY carry" thought process.
