  • This 2006 Honda Pilot had a charging issue, and after I did a simple test, I decided to replace the alternator. This is a FWD model.

    Great video, I’m a You Tube certified mechanic and you just gave me another certificate. Keeping my 2006 Pilot with 298000 miles alive one part after another. Did water pump timing belt and tensioner last year. This looks easy compared to that job.

I can see you took effort to provide shots from different angles and to zoom in as needed to help people to see things that are difficult to see on other repair videos. This is extremely helpful. It gives me enough confidence to tackle the alternator on my Pilot. You are a great asset to this community.

    My Pilot is an '05, only difference (if anyone is curious) is the tension pulley bolt head to take off the belt is 14mm, and the small bracket on top where the harnesses sit...still 12mm, but the bracket is smaller. Other than that, everything else is exact! Great video! Straight and to the point with no fluff. A very easy step by step guide to help you save some big $$!! Thanks, Boss!!!

      I have a 2005 and had the exact same belt removal issue. 14mm to the tension pulley! I almost gave up on this project until experimenting. Besides that, spot on. Also, the bottom bolt is tough and I needed a 14mm deep socket to loosen it up. Extender was too long, regular socket was too short.

    • @gere3217
      @gere3217 Месяц назад

      Also have 2005 Pilot EX-L (J35A6 engine) and agree with above differences from video. Want to add that smaller bracket where wire harness sits (and 12mm upper alternator bolt inserts into) does not need to be removed because when you loosen this12mm bolt (closest to firewall of two bolts) it will swing up and down, giving more room to take out old alt and put new one in. Discovered this after much time and aggravation trying to get new alt in, after much work removing old alt with bracket bolt not loosened. Had even tried loosening the bolt next to it closer to radiator which did nothing, before discovering and finally loosening somewhat hidden other magic bracket bolt ! Loosening it makes getting new alt into place much easier....and did not have to deal with any bushings on bottom bracket mount being pushed out blocking install.
      Original alternator, was Denso, lasted 193K miles, 19 years...AutoZone replacement was rebuild, $140 after core return ($40), and $40 discount.
      Thanks so much, Jo Daddy...great video instruction and calm demeanor inspired me to save dough and take on this job.

    Thank you for this video, it was very helpful. I will say that there was one important part you may have left out for this process, and that is how to push the grommet out where the bottom bolt goes into. Without doing this it is nearly impossible to get the alternator in there, or at least in my 2008 Pilot it was. Other than that, this is one of the better videos I've used to replace parts.

    Excellent video! I completed the replacement in under 1.5 hours, and I am a hobbyist mechanic at best. The biggest challenge is seating the bottom of the alternator as the bottom of the alternator must fit between two mounts on the engine block. You can see from others' comments that some remanufactured alternators don't easily slide between the mounts. We used an angle grinder to take off 1mm of the end of the bushing sleeve on the alternator. We could have easily used a metal file. Once the bushing was smoothed over, the alternator slid easily into place.

    • @alightintheblack
      @alightintheblack Год назад

      Video is well done. I experienced the same problem on a 2005 with the lower bolt and the protruding bushing sleeve. Once original alternator was removed, I wrapped 6 cotter pins around the lower bolt shaft then tightened to pop the bushing sleeve out (this technique was discussed in another RUclips video). I swapped the bushing sleeve to the other side then installed the new alternator.

    This gives me the confidence to replace the alternator on my daughter's 2006 Honda Pilot.
    This used to be our family car, then I upgraded it to something else and I was going to sell the Pilot and my youngest daughter did not let me. She wanted it!
    According to her, this SUV has so much sentimental value as this is the vehicle she and her sister grew up riding in.
    With proper care, these SUVs last for a long time.

    I did my 2005 Pilot tonight there were slight differences the wiring to the alternator top bracket had clips like the inner fender mount instead of the bolts. The belt tensioner is different you put the socket on the 14mm bolt in the center of the pulley but you still push it to the firewall. I had to remove the power steering reservoir bracket from the inner support to get enough clearance to get the alternator out it was just a single 10 mm bolt. other than that it was the same process Thank You for posting this video it was the best that I found even though I worked on heavy trucks for 30 years its a huge help finding out the tips and tricks to make the job easier.

    I wouldn't disconnect the battery of a newer car when it's running because it could cause a power surge and damage something, that's something people did on old school stuff that doesnt have computers. Even if you did that your alternator could still be putting out 12 volts and keep the car running but not be charging the battery so a meter is the best way to diagnose it.

    This is the best with regard to detail. Here’s my two cents: the lower bolt on the alternator is a real bear. Loctite on it. You will absolutely need a long breaker bar or cheater pipe to break it! Also when both bolts are out the alternator still needs a couple of taps with a hammer near the top bolt hole to get it free. Also if available use 12 point 12 and 14 mm sockets to make it easier to get the breaker bar handle in the right spot to get the bolts started. I used 6 point and it was a pain and cost me a lot of time and curse words.

    there is a slave that pushes in and out and helps tight the bottom bolt if u can get that out just a hair it will make it a lot easyer to get the bottom end of the alernator in so u can start the bolt easy other then that it will take a while to wigleing it back in like u had to taking it out and then the few mins taking out of the maze with the ps hose and ac line but other then that it was pretty stright forward

    So my alternator went out in 13 pilot and just replaced it but my battery light still keeps coming on and off while driving randomly. Had battery and new installed alternator tested and both pass although the new alternator is saying 13+ for the number instead of 14. Really hoping i didnt get a bad alternator from auto zone. Any suggestions? Cables and all that are good and tight no loose connections. Do i need to reset the computer or does my car just need time to realize the alternator is good and not faulty anymore?

      follow up....i found that if you unhook the power steering line at the upper pump (spring clamp) it gives much more room as well but be sure not to spill fluid on the serpentine belt and secure it up over the wheel well with a zip tie so it doesn't pop down and dump steering fluid all over the engine compartment. Also found that a 2 foot piece of iron gas pipe works really well as a leverage adapter for the 14mm lower bolt breaker and belt tension system release. slip it over the breaker bar or ratchet and it makes short work of both.
