Fun to finally take a look at a Nexus phone, this was one of the more requested reviews I've seen recently! 6P video coming soon, and hopefully we'll get through the other Nexus models as well :) Also, I've realized I may have one of the Nexus 5X models that had a yellow tint to the display, as in any shot beside the 6P you can see it's definitely not as white. There is a software setting to make the color cooler, and back in the day Google offered exchanges for a new device- I'm not at all concerned given I'm just using this phone for review. Kinda interesting though.
Do a mi mix 1 review with a 4.4 kernal custom rom (found on the mi mix 1 telegram group). This legendary phone still gave me 5-6 hours of sot on a 5 year old battery with a custom pixel rom. And you're not gonna find a better, more premium phone than this other than the essential phone.
I'm definitely excited to see what they come up with, the whole Pixel line has been a bit of a mess but we know Google can make a great phone. Should be interesting
This time for Android, 2015/Marshmallow era and the surrounding times were among my favorite experiences with Android. It was so fun and experimental with stuff like Skrillex's live case where it showed you different constellation images for your wallpaper all the time. Stuff like that made Android so much fun to use and mess around with. I miss it 😢
I was a big fan of Android phones for that reason. Even in the early days, it was great nerd fun to install custom roms on my Android phones etc. The only reason I moved to iPhone is that Android got too good so the experimental stuff started to go away and there was no sense installing custom roms etc because the stock roms ran fine. I still think about switching back but I am pretty heavily in the Apple ecosystem.
If I recall, the Pixel 2 non XL was also made by LG. And the 2 XL was made by HTC. So that makes sense as to why that phone and this one look so similar.
I used a Nexus 5X from release year to 2020. In 2017 I had it replaced by LG bc it went into bootloop. The bootloop on these and some LG phones is not actually software related. What happens is under heavy use or use in pressurized environments (like a plane) the phone will overheat to the point you can no longer hold it. This heat is often enough to weaken the GPU to the point it can become close enough where a tiny bump well break the GPU in half. If you leave the phone in the freezer overnight there is a chance you can get a few minutes with it before it loops again to get any data you want to save.
Odd how iphone 7 bootloop problems were readily forgiven, but LG was never allowed redemption. Part of the overriding drive to reduce the marketplace to only Apple and Samsung, I suppose.
Ah, this video is so nostalgic for me! The Nexus 5X was the first and last Nexus I ever owned, and I adored that thing… it was the perfect buy for a broke college student enamored with tech. Eventually, I got a job where using an iPhone was a better experience, and I gave up my 5X. Thank you for bringing back some fond memories 😊
Still have my nexus 5x but after mainboard replacement due to bootloop I keep it as a spare phone. There is an option to get it upgraded with 4GB RAM. With a custom rom and GCam installed I can imagine it can hold pretty well even today.
@@gsreads I run Android 8 Oreo on it. It doesn't lag and heat is OK as I replaced old thermo paste with a thin plate of copper. But I don't use it at all nowadays. So cannot really tell you objectively. Having it in a drawer as a backup.
Loved this phone when I had it back in 2016-2017. It was my first Android phone coming from iOS, and the only thing that made me want to go back to iOS was using a Samsung Galaxy S8 for a period of time afterwards lol. Been a Pixel owner since then, it's hard to go back to anything else. Thanks for covering it!
I used to own a Nexus 5X, because of how simple it is to use as well as affordable, given a choice to get either this phone or the Oneplus One. I've used this phone for years throughout high school until sadly, mines suffered the bootloop death, like with other LG-made phones at the time. It can only boot up as far as the Google logo before abruptly shutting down, never to be turn back on again, even when charging. It is considered one of the best phones I've had of all time. Also, the notification LED is located on the bottom grille, where the speaker is.
The nexus 6 is probably my all time favourite phone. Although if i used it today it would seem outdated but for years it was my favourite phone. I remember when it came out and the 5 inch screen amazed everyone because oh how big it was lol. Today a 5 inch display is considered extremely small.
Before pixels, cameras on Nexus phones were told to be the only thing that didn't hold up to the flagships of the time. I had Nexus 4 and was generally happy at the start with it, it became very buggy with time, but the camera was a bit worse than that of GS2 that I had before
I'm glad to see the Nexus series can still be used. I was browsing around the phone market and the Nexus LG brand were on my radar until I spotted the Google Pixel and knew I had to own it. I don't know why people hate embezzles (or how ever it's spelled) so much, I need somewhere to put my fingers as I hold my phone. I was never a fan of the google pixel's 2 tone colour scheme, it's one reason I'm glad phone cases are a thing."
The snapdragon 808 wasn’t a budget or midrange chip. It was a flagship chip it just was a year older than the 810 used in the 6P. The 5x was a cheaper option due to using previous year hardware. Also they’re expensive in resale because they’re the last Nexus phones and nexus phones have a huge cult following in the android community. Since the creation of the Pixel line there doesn’t really exist a “stock android” anymore as android is built around the Pixel and it’s incredibly custom launcher.
Using an Android device around 2012-2016 really just felt different. It felt like a lot of experimentation was going on and everyone was having fun designing interesting and unique phones, but the software was reaching the point where it felt fleshed out and was starting to mature.
In my opinion (if it survived until today) the 2GB of RAM is the biggest issue today. Multitasking is simply not happening and it even struggles a lot with larger apps. The very similar LG G4 with the same chip is much faster in day to day.
Other than the boot loop issue I got that was completely covered and repaired by LG, the Nexus 5X was a great phone for what it was. It did everything I needed it to do with very little issues. I miss the Nexus lines of phones.
1st phone was the OG Samsung Galaxy. Nice phone but the software experience was a huge letdown. Switched to a Nexus 5 (exceptional phone for the price), then moved onto a Nexus 5X (again, exceptional phone for the price) and am now on a Pixel 3. Stock vanilla Android is the best version of Android. It's a real shame the Nexus and Pixel lines don't do better sales. The Nexus 5X is still seeing action. Lent it to the GFs cousin while he was in country and gave it away to a neighbour for their senior father in law.
I used a 6P until about a year ago. It was fine, did what I asked it almost always. Not fast, but perfectly fine. I definitely have an affection for that phone. (I went through 3 of them due to the battery problem though)
Loved mine too. 128GB at the time. Took great pictures and just worked well. After I had my battery replaced, it worked very well with no problems. Sold the phone to a coworker because I was tired of "big phones". Low-key wish I still had it. Fantastic phone!!
I loved my Nexus 5 and custom ROMed the hell out of it. Back when Google was Dev friendly and had unlocked bootloaders. Sadly those days are over and pixels are much harder to customise. The latest Android version made twrp much harder to run on the phones but those clever Devs got around that. Then root would break Google pay so magisk had to fix that too. It's really disappointing given Google stole many custom ROM features for vanilla Android so they should just let people experiment with custom ROMs on THEIR phones. Whose it harming?
I don't believe in the existence of any original Nexus 5X'es that haven't developed the bootloop issue... it's a design defect, so it should be present in 100% of these smartphones. Unless the user lives in Siberia, Alaska or Greenland and the phone never overheats. I'm still using an original 5X but with most of the CPU cores disabled. It's terribly slow and has low RAM. But the camera is so good! Edit: it's rumored that LG released a late batch of fixed motherboards but I don't believe it because mine has no RPMB (removed by LG to prevent... unlocking the bootloader).
@@wosamosman9814 lol what did you do then? I've recently bought a Google Pixel 3 XL that won't turn on and a whole set of smartphone opening tools. 15:17 People always mention how phones should get more Android version updates, but I disagree. As someone who just downgraded their phone from Android 11 to Android 9 because of 11 bringing my phone to its' knees, newer =/= better. I also have a lot of friends who outright refuse to update and, compared to their phones WITH the updates, the update-less ones run way better, maybe with like a couple exceptions at most. Not to mention the increase of RAM and storage requirements. Personally, I would take a stable Oreo over a Pie or 10 any day of the week.(this is Google however, they'd probably do a decent enough update, but I'm talking about phones in general)

I have been looking for a phone to serve as my b cam for my youtube channel and now i am torn between reviving my huawei nova 2i from the dead (bloated battery+broken lcd) or going with the nexus 5X. i found some iphone 5s and 6 on fb marketplace for aroujnd the same price but since i am not an ios guy so i am having second thoughts.
I wish they'd put soft touch programmable buttons on the bottom bezel corners, so at least its not wasted space. If the phone is in a stand it makes changing the volume easier.
Pulled out my Nexus 6P in early 2020, and the apps lagging was the biggest issue. They were too heavy for the processor. The bezels were the biggest giveaway it was old tech, but the aluminum back still felt premium.
Good video man. I remember when I got the Galaxy Nexus. It was such a step up from my HTC touch phone that I had before that. I can't remember which model that was. The Galaxy Nexus was cool because you could also change out the battery. Then I think I owned some other Motorola phones after that and eventually the Nexus 6. (Not the 6p). Then the pixel 1, and the pixel 3XL which I still have currently. Waiting for the pixel 6. I remember that mint green color Nexus 5X was really cool and I almost bought it but held off at the time.
Still using my nexus 5x. I upgraded my boot looped phone 2 gb ram to 4gb. now its performing very well. its been 5 years to be exact. didn't changed the battery though.
My mom is currently using it still. She uses it for online shopping, Facebook, and streaming. She doesn't have any plans for upgrading because it is still working for her.
Ok I know I may get some backlash for this but hear me out. Yes the phone is running Android 8.1.0 but with android it's not just the version that matters its the app support. Yes it is out of date but like 90-95% of apps (if not more) still support android 8. Meaning despite everything else this phone can still technically be used. Android 4.4.4 is now only just getting the boot from app developers so 8.1.0 has a long way to go yet
So I agree and disagree- on one hand, yes, Android is very good with having app support for a wide array of phones on so many versions, but it's more out of necessity than anything else. Many even brand new devices (typically budget oriented) are coming out on extremely old versions, many tablets are stuck on Android 6, and if they required newer versions they'd be isolating a huge portion of the potential userbase. The Nexus 5X hasn't gotten security updates since 2018, which isn't good, and if Androids as a whole got the kind of updates iPhones did you wouldn't need to have app support all the way back to Android 5 and whatnot. That being said, even with an old version Android can still be pretty usable in a modern setting, just often with an older UI and lacking features we have today. I certainly prefer the Apple route but it's fair to feel Android isn't as bad as I might make it seem when talking about updates.
I absolutely loved this phone. Unfortunately I bought it on the grey market, so when it bricked itself (they all do eventually) I had no warranty. Hard lesson learned there. I've mostly stuck with stock Android phones and Pixels since I had this. One remarkable thing about this phone - it was the last phone I had that was fine without a case.
Still running this as my only phone, works fine although I got the free BLOD repair a few years ago. Running LineageOS 17.1 (Android 10) and it's faster and smoother than Android 8. Google should be ashamed at how they stop updating their phones and leave the security vulnerabilities. It's not in their interest seeing they just want to sell more phones, but I refuse to landfill a perfectly decent phone. Yeah it's not the fastest, and yes the camera is just about OK, but I don't play games on my phone and I'm not a pro photographer or care to be. How many times could I have upgraded since 2015? Several. But what would I get, mostly just another phone to landfill and replace. I'm no Luddite, I work in tech, but the short lived nature of phones drives me nuts, it's so wasteful. This phone has been great for me, I'll drag its life out til it goes no longer.
I really hated the fact that Google took away a feature the phone had at launch and was advertised in the material sheet ( Night mode ). It was decided to make night mode a Pixel exclusive. When people came up with workarounds to turn on a feature the phone had at launch and was part of the OS. Google then made a series of security patches that patched out all the workarounds. Pissed me off and I never brought another Google device.
I had this phone when it came out. I had it for one year untill it got the bootloop issue and stopped working. It was an amazing phone back then and really loved it. LG really ruined their brand by making faulty phones.
These were kinda cool when they came out back in 2015. The Pixel phones that came out a year later were a little bit better. Still, I wouldn't use an Android Phone without an SD card, even though the big guys like Samsung are doing just that which is sad.
I used the nexus 5x back in 2019 and it was an ok phone but died on me after 6 months. Reason, is that I bought it for 100 bucks on ebay, they sold me a refurbished one that died soon. But overall It was neat, it had the colorful leds that I really miss for notifications. Arguably one of the better phones i've ever owned. that was my first vanilla android phone and even if it was plastic, my friends were always telling me that the phone looked really cool, compared to samsung or lg back in 2019. I own a motorola one now, and it's a nice phone, but I still miss the feeling of the 5x and the leds for the notifications.
I thought this phone was so sexy back in the day. I remember putting dbrand skins on it and being so excited 😂 the battery and weak speaker were a huge turn off though.
The reason that the second nexus was called the Nexus S was because Samsung didn’t want to be the second one to create a nexus phone. So they instead insisted on it being called Nexus S.
My nexus 5x was fine at first but for the last 2 years it started lagging and the battery life was very poor. It also had some overheating issues. Overall it was an ok experience and the phone lasted 4 and a half years in my use. I now use a Samsung A72 that cost almost the same as my nexus did and man has phone technology come forward a lot
Pixel phones weren’t made by google either technically. The Pixel and Pixel Xl were HTC. Pixel 2 HTC and Pixel 2 XL was LG. And all the rest have been Foxconn.
people are selling these as rooted / degoogled so i was thinking about getting one, to replace my similarly aged and getting very unreliable Galaxy S5 / Marshmallow. Many apps won't even run on it now including youtube.
I had this phone for 3 days before I dropped it in a puddle in concrete while getting in my car. I drove away before noticing and went back and found it. It turned on but didn't work.
i used one of these up until late 2018 and it got really painful towards the end. Snapdragon 808/810 was a bad hardware platform, I miss this phone but not the terrible performance or battery life. I enjoy how with modern phones I do not run out of RAM, unlike this phone.
Basically google had different people make their version of the phone for them and took the best parts off each to launch their own line. Can't hate on it for how smart that move is because if you make a bad one your actual name isn't the one that is tarnished >.> lookin at you Motorola.
Camera was great. Tons of reviews at the time were really harsh on the camera. But i took some amazing shots with it. As with the nexus 5. The battery life was really, really poor. Really poor
The very fist smartphone I ever used was a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and seeing the line end kinda made me sad at the time. But I do have lots of nostalgia for the Nexus phones aswell as wanting one very bad when I was young.
My dad gave it to my grandma and then a ‘firmware update’ turned the phone into a boot looping chaos. Long story short my grandma does not have a phone now

I was looking for a video about the Nexus 5x on you channel and I could not find one then I checked again like you read my mind
Still using my nexus 5x. I upgraded my boot looped phone 2 gb ram to 4gb. now its performing very well. its been 5 years to be exact. didn't changed the battery though.
Dope. Miss my Nexus 5X
what is the best rom, more fluid to use in the Nexus 5X?
@@monicklemos7650 Mokee Rom, i am using with microg.
Need to see a Nexus 6 review. The best Nexus imo.
Facts: Nexus numbers surprisingly correspond to its screen size.
Nexus 4 - 4"
Nexus 5 - 5"
Nexus 5x - 5.2"
Nexus 6 - 6"
Nexus 6p - 5.7" (almost 6 tho)
Nexus 7 (2012&2013) - 7"
Nexus 9 - 9"
Please do ipad air 2 in 2021 i would love to see that as it is the oldest device to be running iPad OS/IOS 15. Love your videos.
My mom is currently using it still. She uses it for online shopping, Facebook, and streaming. She doesn't have any plans for upgrading because it is still working for her.
He did it!
Great Video!!! Love it👍
Ok I know I may get some backlash for this but hear me out.
@@91Tech I think that Google might be trying to find ways to deliver updates through the Play Store.
Looking forward on Nexus 6P and the other Nexus Models.. gonna check your Pixel 1 review later..
Can't believe that I'm still using my Nexus 5X in 2021
Loved this phone; mine just went bootloop kaput. Everything now too big, awkward, heavy; can't find anything like the 5x now.
Can you make a video about the Xperia Z Ultra??
A budget way to get stock Android, a great camera and all at an affordable price.
I absolutely loved this phone. Unfortunately I bought it on the grey market, so when it bricked itself (they all do eventually) I had no warranty. Hard lesson learned there.
I've mostly stuck with stock Android phones and Pixels since I had this.
One remarkable thing about this phone - it was the last phone I had that was fine without a case.
what is the best rom, more fluid to use in the Nexus 5X?
The Nexus 5 would always be the Nexus for me!
Love the color on the nexus 5x, and pixel 5 has that green color
Looks like the Pixel 2 on Google's page is the 2XL, not the 2.
Yeah I still got my Nexus 6 Shamu, with tipsy OS without no bloatware, so you know it's running super fast,💯✌️in .
@nexus 5x and 6P owners; were y'all able to play jade empire on those phones?
These were kinda cool when they came out back in 2015. The Pixel phones that came out a year later were a little bit better. Still, I wouldn't use an Android Phone without an SD card, even though the big guys like Samsung are doing just that which is sad.
I miss the Nexus branding. I thought it was soo cool!
Lol wouldn't surprise me. In fairness to them it does fit their branding of "S" phones, so there's that I suppose.
Nexus 4 was the 4th Nexus after Nexus 1, Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus.. nothing confusing.
My nexus 5x was fine at first but for the last 2 years it started lagging and the battery life was very poor. It also had some overheating issues. Overall it was an ok experience and the phone lasted 4 and a half years in my use. I now use a Samsung A72 that cost almost the same as my nexus did and man has phone technology come forward a lot
what is the best rom, more fluid to use in the Nexus 5X?
The number in the name was supposed to be the screen size
The 6P had a boot loop issue too.
The weak point was battery life on 5x, but what a great phone
I always thought the nexus 6p had a great design and I thought that the google pixel was a step backwards and I still think that lol.
Nexus 6P was my favorite phone. The speakers were fantastic
*Your budget device is high-end for some people*
I had this phone for 3 days before I dropped it in a puddle in concrete while getting in my car. I drove away before noticing and went back and found it. It turned on but didn't work.
Still using the Nexus 6p as a daily driver. Beating out the iphone XR in verses too! Talk about quality and features. Hahaha
i used one of these up until late 2018 and it got really painful towards the end.
Long story short my grandma does not have a phone now
Had Nexus 6 few years ago, after that, even 5" phones feel tiny. :)
You over explained the number and order of naming of the nexus line.
Hey Tech you should do a Note FE review
The power button has been like that since the Nexus 6
the best phone i´ve ever had for the year
My nexus 5 lasted till September 2020 before it started bootlooping
Mine only till late 2018
I keep it as long with my other messed up devices in my underwear drawer forever
