Thank you this is the first time I have actually understood why things are structured and named are as they are.IE Dominent , half diminished, maj and minor chords.Of course being a sax player having to transpose makes it all a little tricky to get into ones head.

But I was never able to fully understand the harmony behind jazz. Now I had my eurika moment… just add in the minor 7th and the secrets of jazz are unlocked. Thank you!

Yes it takes lots of time and practice to learn how to read music, try to do 10 min of reading practice each day. Start easy and gradually increase the difficulty, really focus on the rhythms.

Thanks Paul, that's a lot to absorb. So ... If I memorise those chords and find sheet music with chord symbols, it's possible to just wing it ... ? Also, do the chords need to be transposed according to the music, depending which instrument it's written for?
Hi Robyn, I would say that getting to know what chords you have within each major scale is a great foundation. Most pop and rock tunes will stay far more in one tonality (chords all built from one scale) so once you know the key of that song, you do indeed have to option to wing it with that scale. However as a songs harmony increases in complexity (especially jazz) it is likely to be using chords from different keys and also different scale types (chords built from melodic and harmonic minor scales are quite common). There’s a great book by Mark Levine called The Jazz Theory Book which will really help with all this stuff.
You shouldn’t need to transpose the chords if the sheet music your playing is already transposed, it’s fairly standard practice to have both the melody and the chords in the same key.

Question. At around 5:50 you start playing the first notes. but you play 4 notes but only write 3. so you explain to play C E G but you play C E G ?. this is also for the other bars. This got me a bit puzzled. Could you please explain what this 4th note is your playing? Keep up the good work! really like your video's
Hi Quipp90, I am playing CEGE, in other words going back to the middle note of the chord. This is because I am playing 4/4 time so it’s nice to fill in using 4 notes to help create a steady pulse. You don’t have to go back to the middle note of the chord, you can go to any note of the chord, as long as it’s one of the chord tones it will sound nice. Hope this helps!

I still also study the Ru bank book Elementary an the intermediate book again it was your Sax Academy that help me reed better .
