  • We first traveled to Denmark in 2012 on a family vacation and immediately fell in love. We share photos and stories from that trip and then talk through how we would revise the itinerary based on what we know about about Denmark since moving here!
    Original Trip
Day 1 - Arrive, Christianstown and Walking around Copenhagen
Day 2 - Canal Tour, Little Mermaid, Nyhavn, Rosenborg Slot
    Day 3 - Malmo
Day 4 - Carlsberg Brewery, Fiskatorvet for dinner and movie
Day 5 - Pedestrian road, Round Tower, Lyngby Football match
Day 6 - Roskilde Cathedral and Viking Boats, Glyptotek, and night photos
Day 7 - Walking the city and Tivoli
Day 8 - Helsingør, Kronborg Slot, and Bakken
Revised Trip if we came back for the first time today
Day 1 - Arrive and Rosenborg Slot
Day 2 - Canal Tour, Little Mermaid, Nyhavn
    Day 3 - Aarhus - ARoS
Day 4 - Aarhus - Den Gamle By and Moesgaard Museum
Day 5 - Billund - Legoland or LEGO House and Egeskov (if possible)
Day 6 - Carlsberg Brewery and Tivoli
Day 7 - Roskilde Cathedral and Viking Boats, Glyptotek and night photos
Day 8 - Frederiksborg Slot and Walking around CPH
I'd tell myself to add more days so I could visit an island like Ærø, see Odense, and maybe southwestern Jutland. OR, I'd tell myself to just move to Denmark so we can do whatever we wanted :).

I moved in Denmark in 2009, and moved to Aarhus shortly thereafter, and love it here. I also still catch myself with the "omg I live here" feeling! When I do certain things, experience certain smells or go to certain places, especially train stations and airports, it still feels like I'm on a trip to a foreign country. :)

In truth, I came up with the game in a moment of desperation at the Bardo Museum in Tunis, Tunisia. They have an incredible collection of Roman mosaics from the many Roman sites around the country. Maya was about 6 at the time ans absolutely was not having any of it. We were in a room full of these mosaiscs and some statues so I jokingly asked her to count all the butts and it was like a light switch got flipped with her. We got through the rest of the museum with not problem at all. Her highest count was at Musee d'Orsay in Paris with a whopping 300+ butts😂

Usually in our car with me and my sister on the backseats, sometimes sleeping in tents, sometime B&B´s/hotels and sometimes staying at friends places. Not only in DK but also often Sweden, Norway and Germany, even a few trips further south to Italy, Spain and France :) Now a days I usually only travel every 2nd year and go far away for at least a month at a time, and the year I stay home, I do stuff that's needed for the house and just enjoy the Danish summer, which can be really nice, if were lucky ;D

You need to put one red (1 point) in a whole and then one of the other colors. You preferrable want to shot red(1)-black(7) and then back to red and then black until there's no more reds balls left then black(7), purple(6), blue(5), green(4), orange(3), yellow(2) I believe.

My daughter and I were in Copenhagen in 2018. It was early fall and a beautiful time to go. We rented an Airbnb in the southern part of the city. Like you, we took the train to Malmo so we could say "we've been to Sweden." 🤣 We walked around for about 3 hours and then got back on the train to Copenhagen. Like you, we visited Rosenborg Castle and Carlsberg Brewery (fantastic beer; I buy it here in GA as love it so much). Our favorite part of the brewery were the horse stables. I see you met Bo, lol! I fell for Aksel with his beautiful blonde forelock that cascaded over soulful brown eyes. He kept nuzzling my cheek as I pet him. 😍 Absolutely love Danish food and learned to make frikkadeller. I made it for family recently and they loved it. It's all about the ligonberry jam and, fortunately, our local Publix carries Felix brand (imported from Malmo!). Copenhagen is a place I could live in forever and be completely content. If I were younger, I would move there and teach. I really enjoyed your video. It brought back a lot of wonderful memories. You say you grew up in Virginia. My alma mater is Old Dominion University. Your daughter is adorable. She must have felt like a princess in the gardens of Rosenborg. My daughter and I spent 3 hours in the castle and an hour walking the gardens. Copenhagen is just magical. The Danes are so soft-spoken, polite, intelligent and friendly. And of course, it's all about hygge. I wish we'd had time to visit more of Denmark. Next trip! Oh, I love Swiss Miss too. I have 2 large cartons of Swiss Miss hot chocolate with marshmallows. I will make a big mug of it now and toast you all! ☕And yes, you must try winter bathing! P.S. I just subscribed! Love your videos and Brisket 🐶!! 🇩🇰❤

Rundetårn is actually part of a church and a library. King Christian IV had it built way back in 1637-1642 and the church came some years later. There's a fun myth about why there's almost no stairs in the tower. People say that it's because the king was to fat and to lazy to walk up the tower so it would make it easier for horses to get up and down. The horses are true though, they used to transport books and astronomical equipment up and down. The observatory in the dome on top is also Europe's oldest observatory :)

In the Autumn, there is a couple of days about old variants of fruits and vegetables. You can taste some old apple - including one thought to be cultivated since Roman times. Apples don't "breed true". That means that to maintain same varietal, you need to graft a young sprig from the old tree to a new - and that has been done since Roman Iron Age.

    a few recommendations
    - Go kanoing on Gudenåen, a summer evening trip taking about 4 hours to "the glasses" is amazing in the sunset
    - Go Bunkerhunting. Silkeborg was the center of the german command in jylland during WW2, so you can find alot of bunkers around the forrests, bring a flashlight and explore them as most are open.
    - Svim in some of the cleanest lakes in denmark (Almindsø highly recommend)
    - Hike around the forest next to the lakes and gudenåen.
theres lots of other stuff to do, like himmelbjerget. but those are my top must does.

As for the Frilandsmuseet, we have it on our list! We live close by in Lyngby but I was waiting to go at Christmas time, but then it ended up having to be closed. That is one of the first things we plan to do when warmer weather returns along with fewer restrictions.

Thank you for the this video. It was interesting.
    Two small points:
The oldest monarchy in the world is Japan. However, since the monarch of Japan is styled emperor rather than king, Denmark is the oldest kingdom.
There are actually three silver lions in front of the throne at Rosenborg.

    • @jimmywayne983
      @jimmywayne983 3 года назад +4

Actually... Theres alot more to it than that, first off we need to also look at when the kingdom of Denmark and Japan was equal to the term we use today, Japans individual states was in all practical regard not established all that long before the danish monarchy, early legendary japanese emperors are even argued to have not been real people but pure myths. to follow up on that, we also need to look at the family line. The japanese "monarchy" has had it linage changed and altered more times than the danish monarchy, so if we look at the real defenition of "the oldest monarchy" vs. "the oldest monarchy lineage/dynasty", its argued that the Danish monarchy has a longer running straight lineage than the japanese, that as is standard in many asian countries, where they count in dynasties, purely because most of their emperors wasnt always related, and thats why they are broken down into what family or lineage that holds power, thats where the dynasty concept comes into play, the danish monarchy is the worlds oldest dynasty still sitting on the throne, in that regard the japanese monarchy cant compete, even though japan as a kingdom or empire was founded a bit earlier. Its excactly the same when we speak off the danish flag, the danish flag isnt the oldest flag in the world, it is however the oldest national flag still in use. So yes, denmark might defacto only be the 2nd oldest monarchy in the world, but the danish royal dynasty is pressumed the oldest (longest running).

Did I hear something about Tanks? As in from back during the wars? We have a few museums, showing some historical stuff from the wars, and also having a few tanks in their collection. One is near Lejre, bit outside Roskilde. There is something on Fyn, as well, I guess. I remember, once few years back we parked near by the trainmuseum thing, because my nephew is crazy about Thomas the train. And just beside the building, was I think even an American tank. Looking like either a Chaffee, or a Wolverine. And then there is Stevns, where there was I think a Centurion, and a Leopard.
Beautiful pronunciation of the city-name, when telling about the flower shop. Spot on. I suppose it's the "Kgs. Lyngby"....? I am asking because there are a few villages with that name, *other*.... than "Kgs. Lyngby"
I am not sure how you tried the things back then, in Tivoli, but through all my childhood, *before* the corona, we started having a walk around to see everything. The lines to each of the amusements, see what they have changed, how packed it was, the flowers. But also, the restaurants and places to eat. We find a place, in that amusement park, we sit down, get our food, eat. Take the things slowly, (instead of just rushing through it all). After that, we then go out again. First thing we try after a meal in Tivoli, - it *is* expensive, in Tivoli, I have to emphasize that, but after having had the meal, the stomach and system is still consuming the food, your active energy might not be too high, we start with an amusement called "Den flyvende kuffert" (The flying trunk/(suitcase)). It's named after one of the fairytales, written by Hans Christian Andersen, and take you on a journey, informing and telling about the other fairytales, being illustrated in the decorations. It's slow. It goes up and down, and turns around in curves, spins, but nothing fast, or anything about you get your head down. Among the decorations are fairytales like The Snow Queen, (The pig boy), "the little tin soldier", "the lovers", The little mermaid, the (Tinister), (the soldier with the which, and where he is in the cave down in the tree, with the three dogs on each their suitcase, with money) the Nighting gale (about the little bird and the Emperor). I can't remember all of them, but there is a lot. And if you read them, it will be easier to recognize the fairytales in the decorations. I do remember the last one, is with the Traveling buddy, but also a reference, to something Hans Christian Andersen once said: "To travel, is to live". You, of all, can tell if that is your experience too....

    • @TravelinYoung
      @TravelinYoung  3 года назад

Haha, yep, real military tanks :). A friend of mine in Berlin found a place where you can drive one...we will definitely be going!
Tivoli is fantastic. We have season passes and go pretty often. Sometimes just for an hour and Miranda and Maya ride a couple rides and then we go on. I don’t have a ride pass so I haven’t really done many, but I like the atmosphere, the seasonal decorations, and food options.

@@TravelinYoung Through my childhood, and time growing up, it was one of the things we HAD to do. There is the "old rollercoaster" where pictures are taken of each passenger. That's just like an open train, little waggling, round in curves, and then just up and down over the hills built. There is also one, where it's simply just one big playground. A sort of a ladder where the steps are moving. They're solid metal, your feet can't get through, because it's a solid wall behind the moving steps. One big wheel inside of a box. There was once, as I recall it, and you could see into it from the rollercoaster.
How well do you know the fairytales of Hans Christian Andersen? I know he is fame all over the world and his fairytales are translated into several different languages.
