Cross Kart Custom Mechanical Speedometer Install!

- Installing speedometers on go karts, mini bikes, drift trikes, and other mini machines has always been difficult, just because of the custom fabrication that has to go into mounting it, making a bracket, and of course calibrating it. Today, we're tackling a mechanical speedo on the 750cc cross kart! We use a speedometer drive from my 190cc Honda CT70 build, a skateboard wheel turned down on a lathe, and a little bit of ingenuity to rig up a mechanically driven speedometer. It badly needs to be calibrated, but we'll wait for that until we get taller, more off road tires on the cross kart.

They make speedo kits for motorcycles that run off of a small magnet on a wheel and you fine tune it for tire size
Bicycle ones are about the same. cost about $10
But then they could not use the OEM gauge cluster
Maxx Productions the problem with that is that the head unit is usually only set up (calibrated) for certain commin sized bike wheels (16”, 20” & 24” if I remember correctly).
I really meant for their other go karts that didn't have a speedo. For this one, The could do it with an Arduino, hall effect sensor and an electric motor (like they had it set up) or gut the speedo and install a servo hooked to the gauge needle and have one they can set-up precisely or easily re-program it for different tire sizes.
yea that whould be perfect. Many of the Kozo(and others) have speedo, rpm, wather temp, oil temp, battery power. all in one speedo.

USE A DIGITAL BICYCLE SPEEDO . All are programable for wheel size by tyre circumferance (some support more varied sizes) Sigma BC are the best in my opinion. Easy to install and get accurate. and going to save a lot of weight compared to what you are using now.
Greetings from Barbados, we had Dorian too,lol. Remember the engine was from a bike, you could always put the clutch lever on the steering wheel, the same lever from the bike, and make a foot shift ... just have to make the pedal with a loop so you can use the toes to shift.

Hey guys long time sub and even longer time viewer. If I may make a small observation on tires and sizes. Perhaps a larger tire with a bit of lug like an atv would suffice to bring the cart up to a good ride height, as well make it better in the dirt. I realize you probably now have the wheels and tires all picked out that you're going with. The lower pressure atv tire will give some more suspension wise, for the whoops I know you want to take this bad boy through. At this time I'm sorta questioning the wisdom of driving it much, if at all off road. With the brake lines and drive parts hanging in the breeze acting as a catch all for tall grass and shrubs. Can't wait to see this baby on a track after you've got her all tweaked and ready to rip. Thanks for all you guys do, bringing us such great content every week. Y'all are greatly appreciated indeed! I’ve never had the cops called on me starting watching cars and cameras built a really fast go kart cops showed up same day go figure. Thanks guys keep it up been watching for years. Still running up and down the neighborhood cops didn’t seem to serious.

The "motor driving a motor" idea works best with two small steppers from something like an old scanner or printer. You will have four wires to run, but they can be small.
A stepper will follow another stepper really close, especially at speed. Way more accurate than dc-dc system you guys planned at first.
Also glad to hear that nothing major happened during the hurricane. Keep on keeping on!
I hate so called "noise complaints" from neighbors when same people have loud partys till 2am and i dont call on thrm but anyway...wish y'all could have came to the minbike drag race in Ubly michigan a few weeks ago. Saw so many quality builds and fast and quick bikes too. Ill throw you more info so that maybe you can make it next year. We have a minibike show coming up this weekend sept 15 sunday in romulus mich. Lots of minibike stuff still going on here in Detroit but getting harder and harder to actually ride. Anyway, great vid as always and keep on keeping on!
For your grinding pleasure, trust me on this, switch to the 3m 6ogrit paper with the flush backing plate and nut. Lasts 10 times as long and cuts grinding time tremendously and very cheap compared to any flap disc or stone. Like the difference between a hammer and a nailgun.

Would almost think using the skateboard wheel as a sort of chain tensioner/speedometer drive would work fairly well and be semi-easy to calibrate it.
On old transmission they had speedo cable and u can buy an aftermarket Speedometer Calibration Gear Box
Excellent ingenuity! I have the same situation with my conversion of a Porsche 914-4 to a '00 Boxster engine and trans. The old trans was cable driven but the Boxster trans has an electric sensor. I'm planning to use a speedo drive from the old setup into a wheel of some sort driven by one the inner CV joints. I will probably have to play with the diameter of the wheel that makes contact with the CV joint until I get the correct ratio. You'll probably have to do the same or make some kind of reduction as it most likely will be spinning too fast even with bigger tires. I could go with an aftermarket GPS Speedo but I really don't like the look and size of the ones available out there. Great video guys!

gizmo atplay letting live is one thing, but the neighbors probably don’t want to sit on their porches and listen to a poorly tuned noisebomb for hours on end. Not to mention, that bike motor has stock internals and would make more power with a proper performance exhaust.

does the rear hubs still have the abs sensor teeth on? if so thats a hall effect sensor, input that to an arduino then from that output to a rc esc using pwm and drive the motor from that, that way you can "tune" the arduino to the correct rollout of the tyres

It's nice to live in Montana you can drive anything with lights and a horn on the streets atv utv buggies whatever. I pick my kids up from school in my highlifter ranger all the time
The electronic Speedo is a great idea you would just have to use an induction motor for the generation and a variable speed motor for the drive. The induction motor would produce voltage low @ low RPM and the variable speed motor would variate by the amount of electricity being.on the other hand I think the skateboard wheel mechanical drive will work just fine but you're going to have to run it off of the axle itself to get 1:1 turning it off that sprocket looks about 5:1. I love the build, love the cross cart, you guys rock keep up the videos the industrial V-Twin motorcycles is what got me started watching 👍

What you guys need is what's called a synchronous motor, you pair 2 together and both shafts will rotate the same speed. One thing they were used in were old tv antenna tuners. You had one motor on the antenna mast with your antenna attatched, and the other was in a box next to your tv. When you turned the knob on the box, the antenna outside would turn a equal amount.
Something tells me that the cross kart would sound amazing from a boom tube exhaust set up. It already sounds like a high revving beast, but I think it'd sound wicked with even just a single boom tube on the center of the rear of the frame.
