    I owned an 86 Shadow 1100 for 24 years. Never needed any tools to get the filter on or off. Probably over 50 oil changes with just muscle power, but I also had a factory centre stand.

    I appreciate it. I bought a VT1100C2 and its about that time for an oil change. It's the first time I've had to do one and you wouldn't believe the high prices they charge to do it at a shop. Costs more to do it on a bike than they would on a car! But again I appreciate the video

    Hi randy parry, I haven’t had that particular issue/experience. I wouldn’t drive it hoping it goes away, don’t take that chance till you find out if it’s truly the oil pump, oil pressure sensor or just a loose sensor switch connection. Hope you make out O.K. Good luck.

  • @TheCoolbro625
    @TheCoolbro625 9 лет назад

    Nice video. One recommendation. You state "recommended 10-40 weight" oil. You should probably state, 10W-40 "motorcycle" oil, specifically (even though, I see the picture has this). I have the same bike (2001). I bought the oil filter, a drain plug washer, and... some 10W-40 "automotive" oil from Walmart. Ugh! I found out after my oil change, that I would burn out my clutch with non-motorcycle oil (which has friction components for the clutch).
    But, loved the video as it matched my bike! - Thanks.

      Thank you Mark, duly noted. Yes, the crankcase, trans, and clutch system utilizes/uses the motorcycle engine oil. Thank you for your comments/posting.

    I see a lot of videos saying add 3.3 to the engine. That is 3.3 liters. Make sure if you use quarts that you put in 3.5 quarts. I'm looking at the service manual now.

    Hi - I have a 2002 Shadow Sabre VT1100 C2 and this video is great. Problem I am having is getting a reading from the dipstick. I don't want to overfill, but there's not even a drop of oil showing after putting in 3.3 quarts. Is it "3.3" as a suggestion and you keep filling to get it to show on the dipstick? I ran the bike, let it sit, checked, added a touch more, did it again, still no oil showing.
    Help?

    • @DoItYourSelfers
      @DoItYourSelfers  10 лет назад

      Hi fobagr, The 3.3 US qt. is an approximate number according to the owner’s manual. With the bike in the upright position, add a little bit, check, add a little more, (even if it’s a table spoon amount at a time) :) you should start to see the level. Thank you fobagr for commenting/posting.

    How often do you change the oil filter? I talked to a guy at my local Honda shop and he said to change it every oil change, that's sounds way to often to me. What's your take?

    • @DoItYourSelfers
      @DoItYourSelfers  7 лет назад +2

      Hi Gerardo, I always change the oil and the filter together for my bikes (and vehicles). Of course it adds a little more of a cost when also replacing the filter but, I feel its worth it. Having a new/clean filter protects from the contaminants from the previous oil filter.

      You can measure it out using a measuring container of the amount the manual reads to put in but, I definitely would invest in a dipstick type for your model and year Honda you have. Otherwise, you can put in too much oil or too little oil in.

    what's your take on using synthetic motorcycle oil? Thanks for letting me know.

    • @DoItYourSelfers
      @DoItYourSelfers  8 лет назад +1

      Hi John, I’m obviously no expert to say the least, and honestly I can only speak from experience about conventional oil. I haven’t used synthetic so I can only share what I’ve read/heard, and give you something’s to consider.
      Overall more performance oriented vehicles require synthetic because of the high heat that builds in these engines, where conventional engines don't require anything special. Synthetic resists extremes temperature better and as you know, lasts longer before oil changes. (2-3 times longer) Also, there’s a synthetic “blend”, (a mix of conventional and synthetic) to consider as well. I have an older bike and I’m good about changing my (conventional) oil every 3000-4000 miles. Synthetic is a thin oil and I’ve read some owners who change to synthetic oils in older motorcycles often find they can possibly leak more. (Just something to consider)
      I would always recommend be on the safe side and check your owner’s manual or check with a dealership.
      Thank you John for your comments. Have fun riding, be safe.

    How do you hold the bike upright while checking the oil?

    • @DoItYourSelfers
      @DoItYourSelfers  5 лет назад

      If no one is around I can manage sitting on the bike keeping it in upright position and checking the dip stick but then I have to get off and on the bike to add oil. For the most part I typically have someone assisting me. I would suggest someone helping you. They're heavy bikes, between 600-700 pounds. Always play it safe.

    • @DoItYourSelfers
      @DoItYourSelfers  9 лет назад

      Rog Gibson I put the owner’s manual recommended amount, 3.3 quarts or just
      shy of that, install the oil filler cap, start the engine and let idle a minute or 2 allowing the oil to fill the filter (for a more accurate reading). Recheck the level, adding a little at a time, until the oil level is at or near the upper level mark. Be careful not to overfill. Hope this helps. Thanks Rog for your comments/posting.
