For the brush cleaning, it would work better to use a reusable cleaning cloth, like a dishcloth. It wouldn't fall apart in the water and you can rinse and reuse it. There is definitely a problem with people pretending to draw or paint portraits when they're actually photo manipulations and selling them as paintings. I'm seeing it more and more, a lot of them aren't charging much, but they're giving the impression that highly details paintings are cheap, when they're really edited photos, it's bad for real artists.

Re: the “pretend you’re good at drawing” hack
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it as an art form. Just like I don’t think there’s anything wrong with tracing as an art form.
My issue is when people lie about what they’ve done. That’s uncool. If you’ve traced a picture off the internet, don’t pretend like you drew it yourself from scratch. If you traced a photo on your iPad, don’t pretend like you drew a portrait from scratch. I’d call that digitally altering a photo with tracing and layering. Which is an art form. But isn’t the same thing as drawing an image from scratch.

This is exactly what I was going to say. I don't think you can "cheat" at art, as well. Art isn't a game. However you can fake art or present it as something it's not. If this is presented as a sort of DIY filter, then I think that's cool! It's a really interesting technique and looks different. If this is shown as a way to make people think you've drawn it, then that is not cool. You don't need to lie, because whether you've drawn it by hand or used a computer, you have put time and energy into making this thing with this specific idea in mind. That's art enough, if you want it to be. Be honest with your art!

    • @kokko7840
      @kokko7840 3 года назад +10

i agree with you I don't think it's cheating as art isn't a game or something you can cheat at but I definitely got annoyed when I was younger by people who traced stuff and then claimed that they drew it.
I honestly don't care if you trace I do trace sometimes I think it does help sometimes when you are starting out (with traditional mediums) when you are trying to get familiar with drawing anatomy for example. but tracing something and claiming it to be your "talents" i think is really bad.
I remember seeing a speedpaint somewhere where someone was drawing something is procreate and they were almost relying on procreating to make the drawing for them. having it make a perfect line for them and things like that and I almost was a bit salty afterwards because it was almost like they weren't even putting any effort in and almost have procreate do all the work. at the end of the day, I don't really care lol. to each their own but when people claim to be amazing at art and then do things like that and gain be able to grow their pages so quickly (I'm not saying they don't deserve it but it bugs me a bit because I will spend days and hours working on something and not gain as much as I anticipated. Idk if that makes me a snob lol but yeah lol

I really liked that eyeshadow thing! For anyone curious: The same technique was used in the Middle-ages by scribes and monks for their miniatures in bibles or other books, but instead of glycerine and the other thing they used egg white as a binder, or (if I remember correctly) the bladder of a specific bird. Pigments came from a lot of places, e.g. minerals, blue colours were hardest to come by and thus reserved for images of royalty or saints.
I could go on and on, my mum's an expert on medieval art (she's an artist herself), so I picked up a few things here and there, but I don't wanna make this comment too long. :D There's a lot of amazing history behind this modern version of using the pigments in eyeshadows, but the technique is pretty much the same. I'd love to see you exploring it in future videos!

The actually mixer is a paint muller. The mortar and pestle is only for grinding up the pigment into a fine powder.
Edit: minor misunderstanding. Since she got pretty fine pigment from shaving, the mortar isn't needed. But yes its typically used for any 'sand' sized pigment or larger to get it to powdered sugar consistency especially since its usually cheaper cost wise to get the larger size and do it yourself be hand

Not a paint maker either (just putting this here because it is fairly high up):
The clove oil is for preservation, but it doesn't make it more lightfast or archival in that sense. What it does do is repell mould and other critters that might like to munch on the paint (gum arabic and glycerin is edible after all). Clove oil is one of the best antiseptics and anti-fungals there is, been known about for centuries.

For the paint mixing you need a roughed up glass (for example with sandpaper) and the glass to mix it she used also had a roughed up surface
That way they break up the pigment clumps more and the pigment mixes up better with the binder
The better it's mixed the more opaque the colour gets means it can be this strong that you can't look through the glass anymore just as a hint for future videos ^-^

I actually did that "questionable" hack, with the masking layer.
I was asked to do a poster for a band's performance in a local bar, and all they had were these very static publicity photos.
So I used this technique to jazz them up a little, and make a visually interesting poster.
Here I was, stuck with some photos of some very bored looking twenty-somethings staring blandly into the camera, I had to think of something :)
    And it worked very well.
I think that was a legitimate use of the technique. It really helped me out.
BTW, this was about 10 years ago, and I thought of it myself, after a lot of trial and error. I thought it was pretty creative at the time :)
    I didn't pretend I actually drew them :)

The paint making hack is essentially a very basic way to make watercolor paint. There are some other ingredients that many paint makers use along with the gum Arabic and glycerin. The ratios are important too. If you get the binder right it makes some awesome watercolor paint that will dry nice and be able to be re wet.

i think the art hack on procreate like is okay for yourself and free art it does look like a fun little abstract effect but i would not class it as drawing or painting i would say it fits as a photo filter and thats all, and yes it could be harmless but i know there are people out there trying to use and sell this as legitimate, really just scamming people

@@nery4962 well for 1 this is not drawing sketching or painting in anyway at all this is literally just making a grainy layer on top of a photograph, so people who are trying to pass that off as art its wrong its not its basically a photo filter so this is not the art they make it out to be (imitate) 2 for the girl chole viewed on tiktok use professional photography images which is an art form and that has copyright to the owner of the photograph (i.e the person who took it). so this is putting a filter over someone else work and passing it off as a drawing/painting so that is falsifying this thing as a legitimate piece of work. its cheating because it lying and no actually doing the art, while the rest of us artists spend years to develop a genuine skill, and with people already out there stigmatising digital art which again is a skill are making harder for artist to be recognised for their worth and continuing this attitude of oh its just a drawing, oh i dont think thats worth that much, oh its digital so its not real, and this goes on and on towards artist and people who are trying to earn a genuine living to survive of a skill that they have learned and developed over years and years of practise, so to have people do this shit and pass it off a legitimate is like a slap in the face and its not okay

13:36 "how to pretend like you're good at drawing" I personally don't have a problem with this. It's not so much a drawing hack and more of a Photoshop hack tbh. I think that its perfectly fine as long as the person using the hack isn't being dishonest about the methods they used to create the final image. I've seen people do this and claim to have created the portrait from scratch, which is very frustrating especially when they try to sell them to others.

I completely agree with that picture shading “hack” i think it could be used very purposefully for good as an easy way to block out highlights and shadows of a reference separate to ur own drawing or for fun but i don’t think it should be used as a way for people to pretend art and commission it and if its used for commissions should be explicitly said its not hand drawn art.

The “fake” art hack thing (the pencil layer over a drawing) is the type of thing we do in graphic design all the time. It’s there to create a desired effect. We’re very honest about what it is.
There are also plenty of photoshop artists that do amazing work involving a photography base. I would fully consider them legit artists but they are also very upfront about what they do.
But are there people that slap a photoshop filter on top of an existing artwork or photograph and call it a painting? Yes they’re everywhere!!! Unfortunately some make a fair chunk of money doing it too. Look at any POD site and you’ll see plenty, especially with popular IPs like marvel and Star Wars.

Instead of using a papertowel to clean your brush, get a silicone pot scrubber and put it at the bottom of your water jar. They are small, circular and have little raised nubs. I buy the cheapest brushes for acrylic painting and this makes them last pretty long.
The potscrubbers are reuseable and you can find them at the dollar store.
