Restoring a Mid century Modern Dining Room Table | In memory of the loss of my Uncle

  • Sometimes we try to make it perfect, but does it always have to be?
This table is a Facebook Market place find. I needed a table upgrade, and this seemed like a perfect replacement for my old hand built farmhouse table. The existing finish was spent and uncared for. The finish was completely stripped down. General Finishes Gel stain was applied, and the table was resealed again in a Satin Polyurethane finish. I love how this table fits into my space. There are so many ways to tackle these refinishing projects. Hope you enjoy the transformation!

    -Original Poem-
    Perfection can be achieved
On this Table that you see
But I want to show its memories
Even the ones that came from unfamiliar families.
Tables are one of the places
Where people gather, and where you see familiar faces
Sharing your days, months and years
Decades pass, sometimes along with the ones we hold dear.
    Around this table, everyone knows
As time goes on, we sit around it and grow.
Recanting the stories of our lives
It's crazy to think how time flies.

@@ReconstructingEmily you're most welcome. You know, its funny the things that mean the most to us when a close loved one passes. I want some of my dads old t shirts to make into pillows. He always wore them since he was retired. He had been in a hospital after having his leg amputated, and had a t shirt that said I DONT WANT TO BE HERE. It was just funny and so him and he had a goofy smile. He liked frogs. I found one that had a maniacal laugh, so Mom altered one leg to be amputated and he put it on his wheel chair and would set it off occasionally. Cracked everyone up. God I miss him. 11/30/2019. Try and remember the good and silly times. Its a little easier.

What a lovely finish. I have a Danish teak table of the same era.
I laughed when you said the original owners said every time they used the table they damaged it more. Really??? Had they never heard of table pads, tablecloths, or place mats? Their careless loss is your gain!

This is beautiful! I have the same table, actually. I picked it up off the curb after the previous owners were finished with a yard sale. Does yours not have a leaf in the middle? I think it's an interesting construction, especially the hardware that lets you put the sides down.

    • @ReconstructingEmily
      @ReconstructingEmily  2 года назад +3

No leaf - but apparently it had two? They couldn't find them, though, they gave me the legs for them. That's a great find on the curb. The surf board shape is really cool. The mechanism for the sides folding down is seriously interesting. 💜

For food messes I typically wash with a damp sponge and dawn dish soap. I will wipe it with a damp cloth and then dry it off. For these types of surfaces I like to use some food safe bees wax polish ocassionally to shine them up. Hope this helps!

I typically use 600 grit sand paper since it works a bit easier, and I do usually finish with some bees wax or other. I like Howards feed and wax for these big surfaces since it levels out nice and gives a good sheen. Thanks Mark!
