Great review on Cuba. I would add that you will always find something to eat if you like chicken, pork & fish despite the fact that Cubans themselves don't always have access themselves to these foods because they are a 3rd world country and the US embargo. I have been there over 20 times and you cannot beat the beaches, culture and friendly people. I miss Cuba!

Do you have any recommendations for places to stay in Havana, Cienfuegos, Matazanas, Trinidad? What are your thoughts on using Agencia Viazul buses between cities? Airbnb for casa particulares?

The food in Cuba is amazing everywhere apart from the all inclusive hotels and nearby locations that offer nothing of the local products. Eat fruit, corn, yuca and pork and you will not believe how tasty Cuban cuisine is. A meal in a restaurant is in the EU price range, because products are scarce due to the US embargo, however it is totally worth it! Stayed 14 days and had 0 problems finding excellent food. Is Canadian money ok in the city ? Its been 15 years since i went. Don’t want to get stuck paying for something in Canadian and have them do converting to USD.

If we were going into the city, we’d bring American. Canadian coins won’t work most places, and USD has smaller bills for the smaller purchases if you don’t want to break out your credit card. Hope that helps, Thanks for watching!

Toonies and loonies are worthless there. You can not use them or get them at the bank or any stores and if you decide to tip in Canadian coins the worker will have to find a way to flip it to paper cash. USD small bills and CAD small bills are the way to go for tips.

      Agreed. Paper money only.

That's right. Banks there won't take coins so please don't leave CAD coins. USD $1's for tips and canadian larger bills are fine most other things from what I hear

@@donnaturner3377 you can leave CAN coins because Cubans will convert them at resorts and you can just keep using them. Thats what someone that stayed at Resort only told me.

I hear this about their food too. Being a food service worker, this can go either way for me. I don't usually have high expectations, but I have been disappointed before on my many other trips and cruises.
I also heard they don't take Canadian coin currency. Paper bills is king. And that on weekends, no one takes plastic payments at all.

I got back a week ago, and I exchanged plenty of coin for paper. And not just at the hotel either. I went with $60 worth of $5(can) and came back with none of them. I tipped a lot with American $1 but also with my Canadian $5 but still had enough to help out those who were tipped in coin.

This is something I learned on my last trip too this time I made a trip to the bank to get some $5s so I can tip & trade them for them @@georgemeek4351

Take at least 100 one dollar U.S. bills to give as tips to everyone including people you wouldn’t normally think to including the landscapers, bathroom attendants and entertainers and all service staff. Take stuff to give away including shirts, hats, batteries, flashlights…anything.
Trade your Canadian money for Cuban pesos with hotel staff…be discreet…do it out of sight of co-workers and tourists.
    Be generous…be kind…be thoughtful…be complimentary.
Stay in the shade…don’t drink too much just because it’s included.
Bring snacks like granola bars. Learn at least 20 words in Spanish.
