Classic Game Room HD - GYRUSS for ColecoVision review

  • Classic Game Room HD reviews GYRUSS for the ColecoVision. Gyruss from a 1983 arcade release from Konami and is a cross between a Space Invaders / Galaxian game and Atari's Tempest. Shoot enemies coming out from a vortex like thing (and from behind) while rotating your space ship around the "tube" a full 360 degrees. Gameplay is fast and frantic and very addicitive. Gyruss is also available for Atari 2600, Atari 5200 and Commodore 64. The Coleco Vision version of Gyruss is technically solid with excellent visuals, sounds and controls. This CGR review of Gyruss on ColecoVision has gameplay from Gyruss showing Gyrus old school game play in action. Fans of coin-op classics like Temptest should hunt this game down immediately and waste some bad guys with 360 degrees of force on the Coleco Vision!

Oh I used to love this arcade game. Actually beat it once getting all the way to Earth. Just simple fun. Simple concept and simply fun. Didn't realize they had a coleco version. Surprised I never had it for it back then. Soundtrack was one of the best parts of the arcade version.

I had this game on a Konami Arcade compilation on GBA along with Yie Ar Kung Fu and Rush'n Attack. I think there was one more, Oh yeah! Scramble! How could I forget Scramble?
Yeah, this game is pretty cool, especially the music.

In the arcade this game used a joystick. I always thought it would have really kicked ass if it had used a spinner like Tempest. It is a great game though and a lot of fun :)

just to give players a heads up the "Konami" code works on the coleco version. i found out by accident when i was a kid. it wasn't until contra come out for Nintendo and the "Konami" code came out that i put two and two together and realized it was the same sequence.

i loved this game to near death on the NES. the only game to surpass this in amount of play time for me was final fantasy on the NES. i just love the fact that the NES's sound track is a rip off of the old "rag time" music. but still really great sounding.^^

That version looks and sounds awesome. But, I wasn't sure if it was the video feed or if the game really did suffer from some pop-up overloading. And, having played the NES version, (which is more like a sequel then an arcade port) that version felt underpowered in spots it shouldn't have.
Trivia fact about the arcade: Every 360 degree position of the ship was hand drawn. Meaning the CPU did nothing to rotate the ship. Just hundreds of images!
