I was checking out some old sessions I did over the years... going back to 2010 or earlier.
I came across a track that had all the ingredients for a great production, but the mix didn't quite stack up to major-label records...
So I decided to hit RECORD on my computer screen and try to see how quickly I could level-up this mix now vs. 2010.
In only about 10 minutes, and changing only the snare, acoustics and vocal, I was able to dramatically improve the energy and excitement of this mix.
Watch and hear for yourself!
Easily the best music production channel on youtube. Even better than big names, no overuse of over technical jargon, easy to understand, easy to learn from, perfect for all levels.
TRUE AF
I concur wholeheartedly! Doesn't rant...really. Always mellow, never intense. Smooth as silk, with TONS of information and explanations.
*engineering
@@miguelpessanha Let's not delve too deep into technicalities.
@@marct6613 not really a technicality, music production and engineering are completely different.
Your dull mixes are better than my best ones 😅
😂😂😂😂
Same!
It may be cause his recoding situation is better, meaning the artist know how to record properly, a great mix always starts off with a great recording
Wow... O.O I thought the mix sounded good to begin with, but damn...the "After" is so much more sparkly, detailed, and clear. Fine job, sir!
The difference is incredible.
Great hearing you mix a more pop rock style! Nice work!
What's great about the early mix is that even though, sure, he needed some extra EQ moves and whatnot, his STATIC mix, his VOLUME levels are all about where they should be. The initial static/volume mix is the foundation for any great mix.
Also that snare was recorded fuckin GREAT even for an "early" production :D
What a difference! Also refreshing to hear you work with a different genre. I record a lot of bands that use acoustic guitars a lot so it's awesome to see what you do to your acoustics. I always wonder what to do when they are competing with electric guitars. Great to see that aggressive hi-passing helps them fit in the mix.
I have learned so much more from your videos than my actual school lol.. thank you!
You squeezed the life out of this mix.
the only thing i liked better about the old mix is that beefy snare. but if you slipped the sample back in it would slam pretty hard. we were supposed to observe the difference, and you showed us that. thank you.
Yes, pushing highs will affect perception of lows and mids. His correction sounds beautiful, but when you A/B, there is definitely more body in the original, which I'm missing in the correction. I'm just being devils advocate for learnings sake though, super impressed with this guys minimal movements and result. A+
This video was incredible helpful for the mixes I'm doing right now! Thanks a lot again!
It's so much better and more fun when you don't care!
Ive been watching ur videos for some time now.. thanks for sharing a lot to us. It really helps us beginners. We appreciated it.
Keep rockin \m/
No eye opening moments for me, but what a great video. Thanks for a reminder to be bolder with those eq moves. Keep these videos coming. Love em.
Straight away I could tell it needed a high shelf boost
Really enjoyed this video. Thank you so much for the scoop on how you brought life into this mix. Well done!
Thank you for your service Jordan you've helped me so much 🤠
Would love to see you do a challenge where you fix up someone’s mic they send in
Nice, would love to see one in which you make modern music sounding classic with less highs. Honestly (it might be my room and speakers or my ears) the original untreated version in the beginning sounded more enjoyable for me. The end result sounds really professional, but it's very bright.
Yeah, I'm on the fence here. The brightness correction here sounds absolutely fantastic - mix sounds clearer and less muddy, but it defo made the low end loose a bit of weight, which could be a dealbreaker for some people. My aim would be to get this brightness but revise low mids again to get some of the energy balance back. Definitely a taste thing!
Thanks for sharing Jordan, as usual very useful insight!
Awesome, as usual Jman...
Amazing thank you Jordan!
You amaze me bro!
can you please tell me where to get the Bricasti impulses for the IR L reverb? I sure would appreciate it thanks
Thank you for the video, the settings you used really makes a hell lot of difference.
I just missed some guidance what you are listening for before making these tweaks and why you use that settings and tool. So what to search for when listening kick/snare/guitar/vocals? Why those specific frequencies on the eq, why boosting instead of cutting? Why to lower the deesser instead of adding harmonic excitement or distortion? How exactly you get that bright, powerful vocal sound by changing the compressor and its settings, and how to recreate it when you don't have the same compressor?
Btw i'm on the mixing course and the vault and they are awesome, I enjoy them so much! Thank you!
That was great!
Very nice.
Great video!
I'm currently using the H-comp on everything because it's my first waves plugin, seeing you removed them and replace them with something else felt painful
Dude that plugin is fantastic. Would definitely recommend that for beginners if you need a catch all. Sometimes just other ones with different characters is all.
I really like compressing my drum bus with h-comp, it can have some good punch
H comp is a killer! keep mixing with it . What Jordan is basically doing is grabbing what is the most comfortable tools and not that he is sobbing the plugin dig in with the h comp and you will be happy
but if you find another compressor giving you something don't feel dedicated to one comp . feel the mix . Cheers!
Great result, much closer mix and it smooths out low mid mud. However, I'd love to hear your opinion on the balance of lows and highs now, as some will argue you lost a bit of weight and body in the mix. Cheers!
Hey Jordan, do you mainly put reverb on the room ? Other than the snare.
This is tight
Damn, this is a really fucking good tutorial. Thanks so much.
Can you link a vidoe where you ex plain how to get that A/B listening new and old mix with a new track in/out mix or something at 6 minutes. I really would like to know. I am a Pro tools user and Hard Core mix customer.
Islandfield simply put the old mix rendered in a new track and solo this track when you want to compare.
Why you ignore red indicator SSL channel? it does not matter?
Thanks for the tutorial. You really removed the blanket from the mix. Very nice. How do you prevent the sharp s noises from poping up, when you crank the highs so much?
He raised ratio - less bright more even. To remove blanket raise treshold...
I like this. However, it seems that now owing to all the effects that can be utilized and the use of brightness and up front presence characteristics of vocals and whatever it has changed the recording aspect of songwriting. It used to be that a band had a certain "sound" and character. Now many songs seem very similar in character. It's almost like motion pictures where jump cuts and ultra closeups and utilized for action and edgy ness. Where before drama and storyline had more of the focus. I don't mind the difference too much unless it gets too predictable and similar. This song sounds pretty good however the female vocals sound so similar that it is hard for me to differentiate between one singer or the other. I mean Diana Ross sounded like Diana Ross and Pat Benatar sounded like Pat etc., today it seems more about the "mix" not the song. Good stuff though. BTW - this brought the rhythm guitars way forward in the mix etc. it was instantly recognizable. Love the A/B stuff.
you're correct, especially about indistinguishable vocalists, especially in pop and genres like this. Country now, also
cool thx
Walking the fine line between brightening, and making it sound brittle...
Whats the name of the song?
Amy Savin - where you gonna go?
Ok, the compression definitely changes a little, but honestly, I think the new mix isn't much different, except it's brighter. A high shelf on the master bus would have done the same.
Matthis Schwarz what about all of the tracks that I don’t want to be brighter? This works because I’m increasing contrast in the mix, not just making everything brighter “just cuz”
Just like increasing the dynamic range in the amplitude, increase the dynamic range in the frequency spectrum!
Of course you are right in general. However I would argue that a shelf might not end up sounding a whole lot different on this mix than what you did simply becasue most of the elements you didn't boost high-end on don't have much content in the 6k+ range.
Matthis Schwarz a high shelf on the master would bring up the highs on the drums hats, symbols which already have a lot of high frequency content
it's like you "master" it...
Excellent stuff! Very helpful :3 I’ll be more aggressive ;)
Name of song?
Amy Savin - where you gonna go?
TAMPLATE NEED IT
That wasn't a dull mix. What you call a dull mix is what i actually want to achieve. So this tutorial doesn't help me.
