Agreed. This is definitely something I will start to utilize 🔥

Sorry if I’m missing it but I really wan Joey to make a clean vocal (for metalcore) mixing tutorial on this channel too because I absolutely love his clean vocal mixing.
i laughed at the beginning when you said you want to sound like this? it sound just like i want, and then you said: but you sound like this? and it sound just like my shit loool
Just curious, I noticed that you had the singer up against the wall at around the 3:03 mark. In a smaller room is it better to keep them closer to one wall? You guys are known for excellent mixes and tracking so was just wondering what your theory was on being that close to a wall vs getting them closer to off center of the room. Thanks.
If you're close to a wall, make sure that the back of the mic is pointing at the wall. The back of the mic is the point of rejection. The wall creates reflections. So you want to REJECT REFLECTIONS.
That second example scream track hit me back when I started learning to mix, I was always ended up with result as the same as in the video everytime I tried to mix scream vocal 🤣🤣🤣
lmaoooooooooooooooo ... "STUCK WITH SCREAMS THAT SOUND LIKE THIS" I laughed sooooooo damn hard man. 100% me 12 years ago haha. Unreal what happens the more time you put in on research. Great vid. Gonna save people a lot of time. I used an old closet for booth. Found GREAT foam at my local Lowes. It is CRAZY how much of a difference it made. The plexi i used for the door is amazing too. Computer mods are in the room with me too, so I can edit on the fly while getting crisp playback. When a musician gets into this world of guitar, vocal, drums, it's like finding the land of milk and honey.
dude i’m brand new to making and mixing my own music and i’m so lost on how to do any of this. anybody got some good starter tips for recording or mixing for starters
Is this the same EQ you would get by Howard Benson Vocals plugin? Same question for compression etc... Thats the problem for me with these plugins. If you don't know, you'll probably ruin your mix completely, esp. if you're inexperienced. So either you rely on the plugin or you apply the instructions from tutorials such as this video. What do you think about that @Joey Sturgis Tones?
Depends on the vocal style and desired sound. I personally prefer condensers most of the time but I’ve used dynamic too. For Oceano, it was great to use an SM7B so he could hold the mic and get close to the mic - using his various screaming techniques.
Depends on the type of scream and the desired sound. But also, if the screamer performs better holding a mic, then having a dynamic mic can be all that world of difference.
As a stupid vocalist that smokes that can also lead to blowouts if your forcing you voice or breaths unnecessarily. Just something I always tell my engineer or take into mind when mixing myself
Throwing a deesser on reverb. Ugh that is genius. Never thought to do that. Used to just carve it with EQ for hours.
Omg I know it!!! Lol. Gold.
I sidechain my reverb cause for some reason it works better with my vocals 😁

Excellent examples here.

Thanks for that video.
This is such a life saver!
Would these tricks work for XXXtentacion's type of yelling rap?
Nice mate surprised automation wasn't mentioned but awesome tips as usual!
Video was getting long haha - thank you!!!
I just throw a tube screamer with generally for saturation easy!!

The word 'FINAL' at the end of the name of the e-book was sarcastic I must say 😂
Read my mind today JST!
An excellent video! thank you!

learned a lot! I was doing all the compression on one bus than individual tracks, this seems a lot better
How much would it be to have you mix Metal vocals? I need some mixed
Any tips for mixing backup screams to clean vocals? I literally haven't found any videos on that topic
I chuck the screams wide and add more verb. Then carve out a little bit of space in the clean vocals for the harsh tones of the scream
@@chameleonedm good call. Should be common sense ig but I overcomplicate this shit lmao
First one is wayyyyy BETTER. 👇👇👇👇
pure gold!
Im using devil lock to saturate the hell out of my screams. And you have that darkness knob where you can take care of that high harsh scream sound
Thanks a bunch for the insights!
Also what was the track in the outro?
dude i’m brand new to making and mixing my own music and i’m so lost on how to do any of this. anybody got some good starter tips for recording or mixing for starters
Just get started and figure it out along the way
So helpful. Thanks a lot man! 🙏
Never got the free ebook... Just got subscribed... Where and how do I get the ebook???
What is a good delay plug-in for death metal vocals

Pls do how to mix vocals like turnstile
Killer!
Is it possible to record screaming vocals with a condenser mic or would you recommend buying a dynamic?
Depends on the vocal style and desired sound. I personally prefer condensers most of the time but I’ve used dynamic too. For Oceano, it was great to use an SM7B so he could hold the mic and get close to the mic - using his various screaming techniques.
Sounds like the second vocalist from divine heresy
What recording software you using? I’m done with fl studio
Dude, modern FL Studio is near perfect. Pre-21 sucked but version 21 is great.
Try out Reaper!
Is it generally better to use a dynamic or a condenser mic when tracking screams?
Depends on the type of scream and the desired sound. But also, if the screamer performs better holding a mic, then having a dynamic mic can be all that world of difference.
@@joeymusic I hold a dummy microphone while singing into a condenser mic. Haha I just get more power like that.
whats the song name??????????
this band name please!! fan allready !
As a stupid vocalist that smokes that can also lead to blowouts if your forcing you voice or breaths unnecessarily. Just something I always tell my engineer or take into mind when mixing myself
The “don’t track with compression” to “track with compression” pipeline killed my dad
Preference. It's a hell of a thing.
TLDR do what you want
i want it to sound like stand up and scream lol
Youre on the right track here. I also recommend to check out frightbox academy mixing sheet. It nails the mix on modern post hardcore
Vocalist sounds startlingly like the dude from Combichrist.
or threat signal
0:12 sounds better
Nice troll
😂😂😂 maybe he likes horrible vocals drowned in reverb 😷
Nope. Not even close. Maybe you don't know what better is.
Background music behind speech is kind of distracting...just my opinion.
Which part? The whole video or just some specific part?
@@joeymusic yeah just the parts where your talking and the background music is playing...a good video besides..
HA, you think my screams spund that good from the source!? What a joke!
"gentle saturation"
really? that's "gentle?"
ur washed joey
