As a former runner, i got problems with the knees. While swimming breaststroke, i got pain in them. Maybe i do not do the kicking right. Decided to give up on the stroke and focus on freestyle mainly with occasional fly sessions.

Make sure you are rotating your hips outwards enough - when you pull your feet in, keep hips and knees forwards - before you kick out, rotate the knees and feet outwards from the hips. This helped me when I developed knee pain from breaststroke
