- A brief excerpt from a September 18, 2016 concert by the cathedral's sub-organist, Peter Holder. The arrangement is by Henry Wood, from his "Fantasia on British Sea Songs."
I am American but am so proud to hear Rule Britannia for our British friends.
Same here. I am an American and I am singing to this right now.
@just a name I proud to be an American. I love my home, but I also love other countries too, so I am not a traitor. Thank you very much!
@just a name How very crude. I take it, you are a foreigner of some sort?
They must not be British but want to be
Este himno se compuso para celebrar el pillaje de los piratas ingleses en el mar Caribe. La acumulación primitiva de capital es entonces el motivo del bendito himno de Thomas Arnes.

Rule Brittania...a magnificent composition.
Brilliant. When the walls shake a pipe organ does its master proud!
Damien McBratney that’s cause of the huge scale tubas and jus the instrument is so massive
Quite so!
I just love the sound of a church organ and especially this beautiful piece of music.
The reverb in that room is AWESOME!!!!!
Outstanding performance on the world's finest organ. This is such a fabulous tune and works well within the context of Thomas Arne's "King Arthur. The British Worthy" a musical work for theatre, or more famously, on its own as a rousing and patriotic anthem. Long may it and its subject flourish.
It works even better within the context of Thomas Arne's Masque, "Alfred", which is where it comes from.
I can feal the patriotism enter my heart, and I’m Italian.
Having played this most "Grand" of Organs some 30 years ago just watching the Organist at the Console takes be back to St. Paul's in a trice!
Despite its size and far flung departments this Organ is very expressive & aided by the Cathedral acoustics presents the listener with a "fait accompli" of music dispersal in this Historic Building that remains with one...for life!
Thank you.
Bryan Hardy. ( Australia)
I think (but am not sure) that they mostly use the remote console now, that sits on the floor of the choir. This console was being used because the remote console was having some repair work done.
Bryan, I relate to your comment about the lifelong effect of hearing music within the magnificent space that is St. Paul's Cathedral, London. I attended the Easter Day Sung Eucharist at St. Paul's Cathedral in 1995. The late John Scott LVO conducted the Cathedral Choir and Andrew Lucas played the organ. It was musical bliss on a scale I had not previously known, an experience I shall never forget.
magnificent performance
The definition of grand.
playing the piano is hard, but this is on another level
The harmonisation is beautiful.
What a wonderful, joyful noise!! I often hear this mighty beast but most organists seem to be very reserved and seldom use the full organ. Great! :)
This is the best pipe organ video on RUclips!
agreed😀
I can agree too
When you realize that you are 1% British
That’s a good one!
As a Canadian citizen for two years, I’m something of a British subject myself 😂😂✌️✌️
Providing you drink tea and bring cucumber sandwiches, 1% is enough.
“Starts talking in some British açčèñt”
OMG What a Sound and that last Chord was amazing!!!! :D
The Royal Trumpet stop has to be heard and felt to be believed. It was installed in time for the Queen's Jubilee celebrations in 1977 and first heard when she attended a special service at the cathedral in her honour. The sound of these magnificent pipes virtually " blew the Royal socks off" and their future use forbidden in her majesty's presence. (or so legend has it.)
The sound quality didn’t like that chord tho
That organ sounds glorious and powerful!!!
Spine tingling grand.
Wow, that's great! I love the sound of this great organ!!
I heard this organ Live.. the sound is Massiv!
very nicely played thank you God Bless the Queen and all brits many blessed greetings brother Tobias

Never ceases to surprise me....
Love this magazine instrument, especially the powerful 🎺 trumpets!
Majestic, simply majestic …!!
You guys are having way too much fun. Thanks for sharing... from the other side of the pond.
Bravo!Really amazing!British Empire,the sun never sets!
St Paul, one of my favorite location to see when I’m in a London. Many more however.
There are very few Organs I would never tire of listening to. This is one of them :)
That is a nice Tuba chorus!
Thank you so much for posting.
I heard this wonderful organ many years ago when in London.
To say it brought tears to my eyes and even now would be a lie.
Rule Britian, Amen.
God Save the Queen
Our best wishes to all in the UK who stands with America.

late to the party, but, wow! Would love to hear it in person.
>listening on full volume
So stately!
So much fun, a most whimsical Fantasia. The Tuba Magna is recorded very well.
Waves bow and winds salute! A favorite Trinity Sunday was celebrated at St. Paul's Cathedral the decades ago. Hopefully, another Sunday in Trinitytide awaits me.
Proud to be British
hey can i be british too
I am an American of British descent.
Bye bye 🇬🇧😂👋🏼

Pround to be in it too
Rule Brittania written in 1781 by Sir Thomas Arne comemerating the return and coronation of King Charles the Second as King of England which took place in 1660
Very Good greetings from Italy
Beautiful
Brilliant...thanks!
Well that was jolly nice.
Studying this piece
Very musical beautiful sounds out of this pipe organ.
I don't know why any sane person would give this masterpiece a thumb down, let alone 39 morons as of the time of writing this. It takes talent, intellect, resilience and discipline (and much more) to master what this guy did. If you don't appreciate Classical, Church or any type of decent, classy, tasteful music, then keep scrolling. You don't have to bring your personal issues over here. Take a hike losers. Kudos to to talented organist and the other guy who helped turn the pages. He might be another great organist too. Very beautiful rendition guys. Love from across the pond. thank you for posting.
amazing
Indeed the "New" Remote Console" on the floor of the Cathedral is more often used to hear the whole organ in balance and accompany the Choir more "sensitively" ( it was not there when I played) ....this arrangement is proving quite acceptable from Organists point of view! all over the World in great Buildings.
Thank You.
Bryan Hardy
Wow, one piece of wonderful organ playing. Thanks for posting !!
Wonderful. Would love to hear this organ in person! Thanks for sharing.
They are not only an ally, they are a good friend.
God bless you British friends.
so great more please
I’m a proud American, but after hearing HM the Queen’s strong, inspiring, and compassionate COVID-19 speech yesterday and comparing it to the useless, daily, self-congratulatory diatribes and lies emanating from the White House briefing room, I’m sorry to have to say I’d much rather be singing THIS than the “Star-spangled banner” right now.
Precisely. And it's too bad we don't have a great fight song like "Rule, Britannia!" here on this side of the Atlantic.
Thanks from all of us in UK
Americans are great folks ,I have worked with them and vacationed amongst them ,thier politicians not so great
without question this has got to be one of the best renditions of rule britannia i've ever heard, the stop selection is magnificent and even he is (or was ?) a sub organist I think peter holder is easily comparable with Daniel Roth, anna lapwood and Olivier latry. this is also one of the few videos I've seen where the organ has been played from it's original loft, I'm guessing there was something wrong with the mobile console at the time?.
The mobile console was undergoing some kind of repairs. And if you look closely at the side of the loft console, you can see it's being worked on, too.
Well done!
Very Nice playing...thanks
Simplemente Hermoso 😍
St. Paul survives!
Bravo! Very very good sound and player
Boss music in the 1700s.
Awesome!!!!
Those tubas are totally cool.
The empire must return
Excellent
Magnificent
Magnifico!!
the path to heaven
Played on this organ since 1700
Sounds a bit like the Overture to the Music for the Royal Fireworks by Handel
Great 👍👍
By heavens command
what!! he would not even let me record when I sat there.
They couldn't have been more accommodating to me -- maybe because I emailed them a couple of months in advance to see if it was OK?
What's the little tray to the right of the organist? For crumpets and tea, har! Really, a great performance on a great instrument, bravo!!
I was wondering the same thing while I was recording this, but I forgot to ask Peter. I think it controls the memory levels for the combination action.
My oldest daughter was in London last year and visited St. Paul's. She brought me back a CD, "Organ Extravaganza!" with John Scott, Huw Williams and Christpher Dearnley. Obviously a MONSTER room, I don't know how you can play and listen at the same time:) Great job again!!
British Patriotism Intensifies
ist zwar keine Rühlmann-Orgel, aber auch ganz nett ;-) Grandios gespielt! Chapeau!!!
That Trumpet sound though....
Excelente 😊😊😊
It's baroque music... Thomas A. Arne
The British Empire will return one day
I am a Red Hat Society Queen, this will be my Processional music at my Coronation.
Is the sound quality poor because I'm not a British? :(
Nope, it's because the mics are hideously overloaded!
Because the organ has such an amazingly awesome strong sound
Another softer register would have been a better choice
Ben Parry Not that, the Britishness was simply too strong for it 😂
@@sofiaconserva4110 Not for the audience, I think.
When the Pope doesn't want you to marry another girl
dat trumpets! :O
Somewhat overloaded your microphone :-)
goodchappy Somewhat is an Understatement 😀
The Britishness was too much for it 😂
The Tuba stops will do it.
How dreadful. It's a trip to the headmaster's study for the sound recordist and a good smack!
@@PMS1950 You have a go recording it.
the microphone doesn't rule Britannia enough.
Any chance you could link a copy of the sheet music?
Which Tuba or Trumpet are you using for the dialogue? It doesn't sound like the dome.
I would have loved to record this with the proper equipment.
*happy British noises*
willis solo tubas and mander dome tubas
steve bournias ... and the "battery" of Mander 4, 8 and 16ft trumpets at the opposite end of the nave :)
...and the Willis III (Gottfried/Wurlitzer type) brass trumpet in the dome...
Yowza!

I've played Wagner on that organ
What piece did you play? Tannhauser?
@@TheBony45 Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
The poor microphone couldn't handle it... 😭
I'm a Red Hat Society Queen soon to be crowned, at my coronation this will be played as a processional.
3.5 million Indians fought for Britain in both world wars. We got famines and theft in return.
The Glorious Empire 🇬🇧
You got democracy and a whole host of national functions. Dont be so ungrateful
The British caused the famines?
@@porridgeandprunes Britain killed 4 million Indians in Bengal in 1943 by imposing a famine
Recorded organ music in a big space is usually a plate of spaghetti, as is this version of "Rule Brittania." I'm sure in person it would have sounded very impressive. A little bit ridiculous to still be playing this tune in the age of this new age. How many ships of a fleet does Britain still float around the globe? How many aircraft carriers, please? So--a plate of spaghetti for sure
Yet you listened and feel compelled to grace us with your observation.
As I write this there is strong protest about the BBC's desire to remove Rule Britannia (and you will note the correct spelling) from the 2020 Proms Last Night. I haven't heard any mention of spaghetti, but it would seem that there are a great many people who would not subscribe to your rather supercilious appraisal of it.
