Only stunt people jumped from the actual plane. The musicians were suspended in a mock up with a big fan and sky as background. Both sequences shot in Perris, CA
This video was my first introduction to Wilco, when I saw it premier on 120 Minutes. After being a huge fan of theirs all these years later, I forgot how great this video is...
Most of my fondest memories are of growing up with the music of the 90's. I remember sitting by my stereo with a cassette in the tape deck ready to hit the record button whenever a song I liked came on the radio. This was one of those songs. That was the Napster of our day. Kids today just wouldn't understand, being able to get whatever they want, whenever they want. Maybe I'm just waxing nostalgic, but I totally miss the early to mid 90's. All around, it was just better times for everyone
My sister and I both got a small allowance for doing chores so we had to be very conservative with how we spent our money. We were both huge music lovers so to save money we would both tape our favorite new songs off of the radio. The worst was when we would both request one of our favorite songs and wait for hours just to realize that the DJ could not fit it into the schedule and play it!! If we weren't "hardcore" music lovers, nobody else in the world were!!
Back in the day I bought an akai portable cassette recorder that I used with headphones so I could record songs off of the radio. The things that we did to get our music.. I ended up with cases of recorded cassettes that I kept in the trunk of my car. And then the car got stolen...what a bummer...
I got MTV in 1997 (my parents were nice enough to give it back to us after shunning it most of the 90s) this was one of the 1st videos I saw, this is one of the only songs I know of theirs
Throughout most of the 80's, my sister and I had to live without MTV, too. With our cable provider, the customer had to pay more in order to get it and our Dad was all about pinching pennies. That sucked SO bad for us both! In other words, we felt your pain, big-time!😭
+screwyootube1 They didn't suck enough dicks basically. Good for them, could have ended up like AFI and countless others who were whored on radio during rock's last hurrah (as pop).
@@RoninDays Yep, that's pretty much it. When they did Summerteeth, the record company asked for a radio single, so they remixed "Can't Stand It". It didn't chart, and frustrated that the record company didn't hold up their end, they said, "Okay, screw it, we don't care if the next album has any singles". That led to the whole Yankee Hotel Foxtrot debacle where the band got dropped. When the album took off and they got a new record deal, that pretty much validated their decision to not do radio singles.
@@soulthrasher9 To me, they have a small group of fans and critics that absolutely love them. Most people I know don't get 'em or never heard of them. I kinda like it that way.
My first Wilco song (although I only saw the video years later), and still my favorite! I love the modern stuff they are doing, but to me, the best music Wilco made was the first 3 albums, especially Summer Teeth!
only thing i ever remember about Wilco was a music video where they're skydiving. saw it at Target or something when i was a kid. always associated it with their name & never looked into it til now. weird
Did Wilco actually Skydive? I've been trying to find the answer but for some reason nobody's talking about this video. It seems from a videography standpoint that it's not real, but I really want it to be
I live on Long Island in NY, and the cable Co here, Cablevision, began carrying Much Music , from Toronto, in around 1995 or 96. MM was a million times better than MTV, the vjs were great, all of them, like Sook Yin Lee, Rick The Temp, Master T, Ed The Sock, etc. Anyway, MM really promoted Wilco big-time when Being There came out, Wilco played a concert out in the snow somewhere up there, they were interviewed, this video even made their Top 30 countdown. I remember Jeff and Jay Bennett were interviewed in a guitar shop, and (I couldn't believe this wasn't edited out) Jeff had to go pee, so he went to pee but his mic was still on (Jay said to the interviewer His mic is still on? No way! He was laughing), so you hear Jeff peeing but you don't see him, and he comes back to the interview and I think he said Check, check - you guys heard that? Great. It was so goddamn funny. Like so much I saw on MM, I videotaped it, I don't know if it's posted on YT. Cablevision dropped MM around 2000 and the Godawful Fuse debuted. I miss those days of Much Music.
I just noticed that Jeff & Ken are both wearing sneakers, while Jay & John are both wearing dress shoes; apparently to them, skydiving is a formal event 😂
For those wondering about the "2005 WMG", I'm guessing that is the year they acquired the song, from whomever owned it previously...? I could be wrong, but I don't think so.
Well shot. mix of open air and blue screen footage, I think the sky divers are actually professional stand in's dressed as the band for the free fall, close ups are blue screen. The inside of the plane is a set, basically it would be too unsteady in the back os a plane even with steady cam and dangerious.. think about an instrument falling out the back of a plane. i doubt it for safty it would ever happen. all in all a cool clip.
I think it should be obvious that there were real skydving shots, but they were pro divers dressed as Wilco, with the close-up shots being bluescreen. You have to be a really experienced skydiver to do it with a board while holding a musical intrument.
How am I just discovering this? I love this so much. Look at those smiles!
This is simply one of the coolest songs ever!
I was there that day. It was an AMAZING day and they are really a great group of guys!!
Michael Lanoue daaaaaaaaaang
how many times did they have to jump out of the plane to get the footage they needed?
Only stunt people jumped from the actual plane. The musicians were suspended in a mock up with a big fan and sky as background. Both sequences shot in Perris, CA
@@casoundman that's actually pretty impressive
@@casoundmanDo you know what kind of plane was used? Aviation geek here 😂
Edit: Never mind, I did some digging, and the plane's a Short SC.7 Skyvan.

Yeah i vaguely recall seeing it waaaay back, kinda crazy
this is my dad's favorite song
Ive had the privilege of seeing Wilco in concert four times
Masterpiece

playing guitar while skydiving with a snowboard? that's badass
That's outtasite! :D
@@maxschlaenger1964 Ok alright, ok alright!
They definitely weren't the ones doing the skydiving in that video
Almost as cool as George Benson playing guitar and singing while rollerskating backwards in the “Gimme The Night” video
Tweedy looks sooooo young
Look at their performance at a record store during the AM era, he looks a high school kid.
So that is him
so awesome to see this again after so long. this was one of the coolest music videos back then!
I don't think I remember MTV playing this.
Kip Vaughan it was one of those 120 Minutes bands, I don't think it ever made regular rotation during the day.
The Wormhole Productions Group I remember this was also around the time Mtv started playing music less.
Great album - pure power pop magic.
First Time i have seen a Fender Esprit in a music video or during sky diving.
Here there's big influence of Alex Chilton's "Big Star", Teenage Fanclub , Poises....Great song!!
+ Evan Dando
YAAAAAAAAA ITS BACK!!! Love this song! WDOX WILDWOOD NJ!!! STILL MISS YOU !!!!!!
Best video of all time - VOAT
Back when Wilco had a mainstream music video...

Hahahahaha what the hell are you talking about? They're popular as hell. They are correctly rated. They are huge and have a giant fanbase.
