When changing cables on this type of scooter body , always either tape the new cable to the old one , or tape something ( like string) to the old one before you pull through . At this stage , push wire up from below and use it to pull new cables through.

@@M.TTT. it´s not that expensive, and how much do you need, 6 foot? At least you can use it after for something else, to hang up parts for painting etc.
I think it works very good, stiff enought to do not bend that easy and you can get it through by wiggeling it the most time.
bending the tip 180 degree helps to not pierce something and get stuck.

You get the correct oil level by removing the small plate on the clutch cover with the two screws, fill it until it flows out of the bottom of the hole.
Make sure you set the mixture screw so it runs slightly rich or you could get a seizure.
The crank seals can be checked by blocking off the exhaust and inlet and pressurizing the crankcases, see how other scooter buffs do it.

Changing cable outers on Vespas is easy. You take the old inner out, then use a long piece of wire, double the length of an inner cable threaded through the new outer then you pull the old outer out and it is replaced by the new outer as you pull it out. New inner in, job done.
    Too late now though... 😢

    • @cleighton1605
      @cleighton1605 9 месяцев назад

I was going to say the same thing. Or, tape a wire fish to the opposite end of the cable/sheathing you are pulling, then at least when you pick up a new cable, you have something you can tape it to for pulling the new cable through it's exact position.

The tank needed sealing. But the one thing I don't have is the end of the exhaust. For a replacement carb I went to the experts, Sudco. They had exactly what I needed and the intake tube. If you were to completely tore that scooter down. Have the engine vapor blaster, the chassis blasted and repainted, the frame blasted, wow. Why not. There is no way what you do can be sustainable. Buying a new bike every day to have a video every day and not to mention the garage being filled with all of these projects. Do a bike complete restore on that little scooter. With fitting rings, you need to adjust Gap at unworn part of cyl; basically bottom area as if you do it at worn section around top, the gap might be just right but when the ring goes to unworn part and is hot, it might be too tight and touch. Also you need to check side clearance of ring in the grove so its not too tight or loose as these were not likely the rings the Italians used for that piston?
Excellent work on what you did, i just wanted to point out some extra hints so the job is done as good as it could be and not cause install problems once the engine is hot and parts expand..

It's not idling because the tiny reed valve between the jug and the intake tube broke off, they were fibreglass on these old Italian scooters. I've had good luck custom making replacements out of metal reed valves from larger motors, they also last forever compared to the old fibreglass ones.

It would be super helpful if you would leave links in the description to the first videos of the bikes you are fixing. I have trouble finding the original videos sometimes. 😅

Try some Lambretta cables (Series 2 are longer). Lammys have the same gear arrangement. Full sets are readily available with modern no-oil outers etc.

    Hi there.
The engine certainly sounds like it's WORTH restoring.
Just one piece of advice : it is extremely inadvisable to keep running it in first or second gears for too long as this runs the real risk of burning out the clutch - particularly at high revs.
    Thanks for reading this.

I have been buying chain saws and collecting them lately and I was thingking a chainsaw rings would work I been looking at them to rebuild my chain saw actually bought some rings and a piston for a echo 490 they looked simular to those. But 44mm. What brand or kind of gasket maker are you always using for the cylinder? It will be sweet after you blast it and paint it. I bet if you keep trying you can get the throttle cable back in with a lot of tries.Bend it differently on the end. Sounds like a husky now.

Joe you can buy gasket material paper. In different thicknesses. Make your own gasket 75% of them are easy cuz you can stick them on the surface you want to make and slightly tap with the back end of a screw driver or roll it around the edge. Use a socket to cut the hole. Lay paper on something hard like a vise anvil or hard wood. Take a socket with the appropriate Outder diameter. Line up perfect and hit with a hammer. They make gasket punches just for this reason

Would it be easier to add gasket material to bottom of cylinder and head instead of working around long bolts?
