    Hey everybody! Thanks for watching this video on "5 MORE Albums to Expand Your Taste in Music". This is a little sequel to last week's video because the reception was so warm. I loved seeing everyone be helpful in the comments & giving their own recommendations, etc. In this video, we're going to do our "window shopping" for 5 genres/subgenres that the average person might not know suuuper well. This time, we've got gothic rock, neo-soul, singer-songwriter, funk, and chamber folk. Keep that comment section as wholesome as it was last time and thanks for watching!

      Listen to the album called Wicked City by Jockstrap. You have to listen to the full thing as every song sounds like a completely different band (kinda the opposite of a concept album but there is still a strong theme). Watch MGMT's when you die music video and then you won't be able to stop yourself from listening to little dark age, their full album. Also 13th floor elevators, pink floyd and jimi hendrix are the of artists that got me into psychedelic rock!

      Nah, Parliament, Flash Light, Bootsy Collins,Knee-Deep, Atomic Dog, they're all superficial and worthless in my opinion. But I’ll try and explain in a mainly less colloquial way as to what I think the best thing to come out of George Clinton is;
      In my opinion, George Clinton's greatest achievement is Maggot Brain by the Rock oriented band from his P-Funk collective; Funkadelic. Many people often agree that the guitar solo on the opening title track of the album is some of the most devastating Omniversal Blues to ever be played. While Eddie Hazel was inevitably only hired for his merit as the closest George could find to a Jimi Hendrix rip-off, Maggot Brain's guitar solo appears to have a far deeper meaning than most think. People say the solo is just someone reacting to their mother's death judging by Eddie’s recollection of when he wrote the solo, but the interpretation I want to explore is one that might give the guitar solo a deeper meaning which can get people’s interests.
      It can be argued that the Maggot Brain guitar solo is one that tells a story; the story of a member of the black community in the early to mid 1970s doubling down on the disappointment he and many other members of the community felt when the Hippie Dream which would've brought peace and prosperity was put paid by Altamont and Manson, and that they will continue to face injustice in their life, made even worse by the draft, and incidents like the Kent-State Ohio massacre disposing of those advocating for peace. That's the first 5 minutes, but the last 5 explore the small inch of hope that remains in the protagonist; the feeling that no matter what happens, people will still fight for him, his brothers, and sisters for a better world with peace, love, kindness, and injustice.
      In the opening monologue; Clinton tells us how Mother Earth is; "Pregnant for The Third time", since we as a human race, the ones living on this small planet have "knocked her up". It can be said Clinton's metaphor of Earth as a woman raped and impregnated for the third time in a row, can be seen as a reference to 2 prior incidents of racism in the 20th century; the resurgence of the KKK following the release of the infamous “Birth of a Nation” film in 1915, and The Holocaust. The Earth is torn and damaged from unkindness and cruelty, it can no longer sustain itself as a clean and positive environment from this.
      The narrator then says that he has tasted the “maggots in the mind of the universe”, but is not in the least bit offended since his intention is to rise above it all or “drown in his own shit”. The narrator of the monologue is likely to be the main protagonist from the interpretation, close to death after commiting suicide due to him snapping at the new way of life he faces; being constantly persecuted and beaten physically and emotionally by the injustice he and the other members of his black community faces. The maggots mentioned in the monologue could possibly be a metaphor, for reality coming to bring down the hippie dream, to tell them that no matter what they do, there will always be injustice. People will always act cruel and malicious towards others, and the behavior of others is beyond their control.
      Then the instrumental begins. The bass and the second guitar play a very simple melody, which can be interpreted as the narrator having a flashback to the early to mid 1970s. It’s another usual day for him at this point, news reports of injustice, with systemic racism and police brutality following him every nook and cranny. After that, the drums come in, which can represent the young version of the narrator’s growing temper. His stoicism is deteriorating, as he starts to reflect on the past. When he was a young enthusiastic hippie participating in positive acts for change and watching his now perished idols like Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone at Monterey and Woodstock, thinking about how life would improve for him more sooner rather than later. Then the guitar kicks in, which can be interpreted as the protagonist crying and breaking down in tears, thinking about the circumstances which killed this positive environment which provided escapism for him.
      The first 5 minutes are him crying and breaking down, lamenting everything that’s happened since. As the guitar becomes even more sad and violent, the protagonist completely breaks down and curses the cruel God he and his family worship that constantly promises him peace if the love between him and itself is mutual. Finally deciding he’s had enough, the protagonist chooses to commit suicide. He takes a sharp knife from his drawer and slashes his wrists, which brings the violent rage to a stop. The next 5 minutes have a much more positive and upbeat tone in comparison. In the case of the interpretation, the last 5 minutes are a return to the present day. The protagonist is near death, but as he breathes his last, he departs from the world with a hope. The hope that while he will not live to see it, more people will keep fighting for a better world for him, his brothers, and sisters, for us as a human race. A world where we’re all kind to each other, and can live together in peace. As he breathes his last though, we hear a man repeat; “Maggot Brain” more than one time. This is represented in the interpretation as the cruel God sending down a mob of the pessimistic maggots to kill the last remaining bit of happiness left within the soul of the protagonist. The protagonist pleads for help, but God turns away, and the soul melts into a void of non-existence, representing peace brought on by isolation, and the loneliness and apathy that comes with it as the song comes to an end.
      In conclusion, Maggot Brain is among many things; a cry for help from the persecuted, ignored by the most privileged of human beings that have the power to help them. And ultimately, this is what makes the song most relevant today, and why it’s George Clinton’s greatest achievement. As of now, most people are starting to realize that Racism is still a big issue in the world thanks to undealt problems like Police Brutality. With people taking notice of extremely severe cases of police brutality like the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, everyone can agree that nobody deserves to be killed by the very thing that’s meant to protect them, be it due to the melanin on their skin or for any reason at all. And with the officers that murdered Taylor not being charged for taking her life, it’s definitely a sign of things to come. Black Lives Matter, because they’re being hurt. Those who say; “All Lives Matter” as a way to argue against organizations like BLM are ones that not only fail to realize that BLM wants to achieve equal significance for all lives by stopping Police Brutality and other issues, but they are also ones that have inevitably been taught biased lies about how Racism ended in the 60s and thanks to MLK, people started being nice to each other overnight.
      While I don’t care too much about the organization itself, I stand with the message Black Lives Matter is trying to spread, and I will do anything in my power to express this. Fuck the rioters and looters who are only joining the protests to experience the glory and attention those participating in positive acts get. While I’m nervous about participating in public protests due to me being worried about social distancing being impossible, I shall do whatever I can to bring about positive change around the world if more injustices continue to take place, be it on Social Media, or any other way. I hope for everyone else to do the same. Cheers y'all!

    I feel like Elliott smith kinda perfected the singer songwriter thing. He (especially the first half of his discography) is the pinnacle of what I imagine singer songwriter music as. He had some of the best chord progressions and harmonies ever with intricate acoustic playing and some of the most honest and intimate lyrics I’ve ever heard. I feel like anybody getting into singer songwriter type music should start with XO, or Either/Or. he definitely went beyond the singer songwriter category later in his life though.

    The Cure - Pornography is the masterpiece in Gothic Rock. While there are happier songs on Disintegration like "Pictures of You", "Lovesong", and even "Untitled" (if you don't read the lyrics.), Pornography is one of the saddest albums you will ever listen to. It is bathed in bloody acidic nihilism meshed with a Phil Spector-like wall of sound production, and is the first album to showcase Robert Smith's trademark messy hair, eyeliner and lipstick (influenced by Siouxsie Sioux). Nothing is happy or too poppy on Pornography. If you truly feel miserable, give this album a cathartic spin.

    • @FHL-Devils
      @FHL-Devils 2 года назад

      Agreed completely. Disintegration is literally the most important album in my musical life - but calling it an introduction to Goth seems rather misaligned. Especially when placed in the same sentence as Bauhaus and the Banshees. That said, the majority of people even somewhat interested in music have at least heard of this album, so I can certainly see why it would be chosen as the lowest barrier to entry...... THAT said, when Pictures of You was chosen as the sample track for the album, I did have to cringe, as that track doesn't have even a passing resemblance to any era of Goth. Literally ANY other track on the album would have been a more appropriate choice.
      Something else to keep in mind is the biggest problem with the album you mentioned - the title. Thanks to censorship and RUclips Filters, this video could be heavily suppressed if that was the album being promoted. As stupid as it is, that's how it goes. P-ography, if named something else, would likely be a RUclips darling of 'surprise album' compilations.

    10 albums of music discovery were spot on and some of my favorite music also. There are two albums that I've never listened to out of the ten and look forward to doing so (Danny Brown & Tricot). My top singer-songwriter pick would have been Joni Mitchell with Blue -- but I love Neil Young too. It might just be a shared female perspective that I find exquisitely moving. Wonderful series.

    Post punk is one of my favorite genres. It rides this fine line between new wave, goth, and snythpop, which are all some of my other favorite genres. If you are looking for a great post punk album, I recommend Strange Times by The Chameleons. The track that I recommend you start with is called Swamp Thing.
    If you want something in the same vane as Neatral Milk Hotel, I recommend Beat the Champ by The Mountain Goats. This one is a concept album about pro wrestling. Enjoy!

    Honestly I feel one great place to start with funk is with bands like Kool & the Gang and Earth Wind, & Fire. They certainly have many emblematic songs of the funk genre while also being very accessible to a new listener. They may not necessarily have the classic album certifications, but they have the great tunes, grooves, and tight performances that really characterize the genre. My personal pick for an album would be "Wild & Peaceful" by Kool & the Gang. It has genuine funk classics ("Jungle Boogie," "Hollywood Swinging") and is just a fun listen overall.
    I don't know about Earth Wind & Fire's album reputation and I know some may think that a greatest hits album is cheating a little bit, but truthfully their Greatest Hits (from 1998 with the pyramid and all of the Egyptian symbols on it) is a phenomenal introduction to them.

    Idk if this is an obscure subgenre or not but I want to mention britpop. Created during the 90’s, this genre was created by British artists who made catchy, 60’s inspired pop songs that often had darker meanings. The album I’d recommend is Blur’s Parklife; it is an excellent representation of the subgenre and is probably the most British album ever made.

    Such a beautiful and somber album, it's like hearing your drunk friend talk about his recent breakup but with lyrics, instrumentals and vocals that gives you goosebumps
