How To Make A Giant Bonsai Forest 🌳 *EASY*

- In this Bonsai video we show you how to make a Giant Dawn Redwood Bonsai Forest. Bonsai Forests are a little different to a regular Bonsai as they involve more than one tree.
Hi everyone! We are back with another fun video with my good friend Attila Csintalan! Building a giant Bonsai Forest may seem a bit "advanced" as there is so many elements to the planting. But don't worry we've got you covered! We break down each stage to make it super easy to understand, even for Bonsai beginners! 🌿
While theoretically any species of tree can be used for a forest planting, there are some species that are much more suited to this style than others. I encourage experimentation to see which species you think would work best or even to develop new ideas! Some suitable species for Bonsai forests include Japanese Larch, Japanese Maples, Pine, and in our case, the beautiful and ancient Dawn Redwood. Generally, forest plantings are created with an odd number of trees, as this results in a sense of natural asymmetry. However, this is only a guideline, and ultimately, it's down to personal preference as it is your planting after all!
The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia Glyptostroboides) is a fantastic pick for Bonsai Forests. Its delicate leaves and branches scale down perfectly for Bonsai, letting you craft intricate details. Plus, it grows fast, so you can build that dense forest look relatively quick. As a deciduous tree, it adds a neat seasonal twist, turning from lush green to autumn gold. The reddish-brown trunk and unique bark give it that natural, aged vibe that suits Bonsai. This living fossil's historical significance adds an intriguing layer to its presence, making it a historically and aesthetically valuable addition to Bonsai Forests.

That is some bonsai releaf level cinematography.
I would not call that *EASY*.
Well done!
Aw thanks very much! 🤗 I don't think its difficult though! It's like long multiplication! Easy... but time consuming lol
What an amazing composition you fellas made. I love Attila's yard with all that greenery. Yes please make an update.
Thanks very much! There will be an update hopefully in the summer! 😁😁
I am a complete neophyte amateur beginner, but already i learned a lott watching you guys, and besides that its so comforting watching your videos after a day of stress or hard work! Many thnx!!!!!
I am glad you enjoy my videos! 🤗
I think you and Attila work well together and bring out the best in each other. Working on your own on a forest of any size is difficult you just need more hands. I did an aspen forest for hubby's Christmas prezzie last year. I think it was 15 trees. I trimmed it and put the cuttings in water so I have one too now. Keep growing.xx
Hey Mandy! How are you! 🙂 Thanks very much! Ohh thats gonna grow into a nice forest for you too!
@notionbonsai sure is and keep growing the cuttings xx
That's a beatufull forest you guys did! I love it!
Thanks for the video
This is my Favourite video of yours so far on this Channel. The cinematography is on point and I enjoyed the bit where Attila showed how he created the base for the trees. Well done!
Thanks very much man! 🙂
Love this so much!! Very cool!!
Beautiful work once again Atilla and Adam. And lovely editing Adam. The detail work with the moss and stones--even watering--was mesmerising. You're a talented artist and a fantastic teacher.
Excellent video guys! Can’t wait to make my slab and forest. I love forests!

Thanks Donna!!
What a lovely man. I really enjoyed the video
Attila is awesome! Thanks for watching 🙂 There will be lots more Bonsai videos to come!!
Looks amazing!
My dawn redwood is still quite skinny, but I do love this tree.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you 🙂 Yours will thicken in no time! They do grow quite fast. Especially if you plant it in the ground or into a larger pot!
Coming from someone who's no gardening talent - this video was fascinating to watch. Very educational and engaging. Attilas garden is perfect, you can see the love, attention and planning involved in growing it.
Thanks for sharing this knowledge guys!
Lovely job
🤗🤗
Great job guys! Future show winner!
Hey thanks very much Jay!! 🤗
Absolutely amazing. What a stunning absolutely stunning piece.
I'm enjoying your channel, you're such a good speaker, so clear and make it all look achievable for those of us not as skilled.
Atilla made an amazing slab.
Best video yet.
Hey thanks Luigi! Bonsai shouldn't be difficult! It should be for everyone I think! But it can be time consuming! 🤗😅
That s great. Hope to see after few years or even yearly
We will do an update next year!
Nice video looks great 😮
Thanks! 🙂
That was a great demonstration and i shall be trying that with my oaks next year.
Thank you Xavier! I look forward to seeing yours!!
Amazing
Thanks Brendan!!
Great job guys your a good team. Not sure what your climate is there but one tip we use is to use muck to build up the edges and create a solid border to hold soil in. Muck is basically even parts of long fibersphagnum, akadama dust, and shredded clay, mixed with water to create a sticky muck consistency. One other tip when planning these big plantings your usually growing out the material, so each season I would repot the trees flattening out the root ball a bit more each season, it really makes getting the root down on the slab and close together much easier when assembling. Again stunning forest looking forward to watching it progress!
Ooh nice! Thank you so much for these great slab tips!! 🙂
Well done, brothers.
Hey thanks Gary!
Nice big project 👍
Hey thanks SakuBonsai! 🙂
Nice job!

Hey thanks Kennet! 🙂
🙏
Thanks
Hey! 🤗
I have 11 DRs in pond baskets destined for a group planting. I will be using a large mica pot. This video was quite informative and helpful to me as I continue to plan my Dawn Redwood forest planting.
Ooh nice! Yours is gonna look awesome too! I hope all goes well for you! Are you waiting until next spring? 🙂
@@notionbonsai It depends on the trees. I’ve been studying them for the appropriate time to prune them back, and they’re not ready. Spring is the target however.
good job
thanks!
Another great colab between you two. Nice to see you work together and of course a great completion of a project.
Hey thanks very much! It's always great to work with someone else on a Bonsai project!! 🙂
Beautiful 😍 great Atila got a compass on his head so you find your way true the garden 😂 yes I know your laughing adam 😂😅
amazing work..how do you handle growing roots in that type of setup?
Would love to see how this develops please ..
Nice one mate ☝🏼🤚🙏🏼🇵🇭🇬🇧atsuuuup 👍🏻
Giant & Bonsai seem contradictory to me. Thank you.
It is a strange concept at first but Big Bonsai are pretty fun if you have the space!
Hi Great video, do red dawn air layer .. or could you plant cuttings and have success ?😊
Attila looks like he’d chop me up and make a blood eagle 😂
🤣🤣🤣 You are fine! This gave me such laugh! 🤣
😅
Great looking forest you guys! Saw a trick on the Herons channel, where I think Pad, mixed clay into some soil to hold edges in place. I tried it on a planting where I needed the soil to stay on a verticle surface, and it still seems to be holdinga couple of months later.
Ahh nice! Thanks for sharing this Bonsai tip!! I'll keep that clay tip in mind for the next slab project I do! 🙂
Any chance of seeing another video on how to make concrete slabs for forests PLEASE ? can find them anywhere for sale
Where I live on Morecambe bay, after collecting moss and placing it on my trees, I then spend at least an hour a day picking up from the ground and replacing it, following the black birds, who remove it every day.
Gorgeous looking forest ! I love the little added details like the ferns and the little stones. The moss adds a lot to the forest feeling as well.
It's amazing what a little moss can do to a planting! 🙂
So cool. Is he going to have to bring it in during the winter?
Hey Bookworm! Bring it in do you mean to the greenhouse or?
Nice to see you guys working and creating together. The forrest slab looks great.
Hey scott! Thanks very much! 🙂
Nice job and an outstanding video production. Your forest looks great. Cheers Craig
I absolutely love this. May I ask where did you get your trees from?
Hey Anita. If you are interested and you are in Irelabd i can get trees for you 😊 As i mentioned in the previous videos, they are all grown from seed 😊
@@attilacsintalan3285 I live in Louisiana. Do you ship?
👍👍👍
Nice one! Just wonder if adding some clay to the compost/perlite mix (as Tony from Preston) might help with stability?
For sure! 🙂
I've made a few slabs for my attempts at a forest planting. I still can't find the trees I love.
The sealer coating on cement slabs or pots,I thought was my great one-of-a-kind idea's haha guess not. Hey it works great just seal the wholes after drilling cuz here in Michigan's weather water then ice will get into pours and crack and weaken the cement.
One slab I used very lightweight re-bar which worked great if u have the tools to cut it. Another one I used a single peice of chicken fence and cut it just short of the end size and the other slab I used like u did the sheet-rock joint tape.. all 3 held up great being outside in michigan fir 3 years but honestly the unbreakable one is the one I used thin re-bar it seriously was knocked over and barley chipped the cement..
Ohh nice! I like that chicken wire idea!
This is absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing the process. ♥
I see your bonsai experience and knowledge coming on in huge leaps under the mentorship of Attila 👍💪🌳🌳🌳
That slab was a great piece of art.
I hope I never stop learning Jason 😄 I learnt a good bit from you too when I was at yours!
@@notionbonsai thanks Adam.
Im new to your channel and I love it!! I just started mine and you give such detailed information about the bonsai making, etc.. It is also very therapeutic.
This particular video and that Bonsai makes it feel like a magical forest. 🤗🤗🥰🥰
Awe thank you so much! 😊 It looks magical to me too!!
Thank you so much for your video. So perfectly explained!!!
One question. How do you keep the birds from pecking and stealing the moss from these forests? I made one using your method, and within 3 days, the whole soil area was assaulted and foraged by birds and all the moss thrown aside.
I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks again.
Ahh noo! I have had this problem with my spaghnum moss on the surface of some of my pots but not very often. One effective method is to use bird netting or mesh to cover your Bonsai. Ensure that the netting is secured firmly to prevent birds from getting underneath. You could also employ visual deterrents such as reflective tape, old CDs, or scarecrows, which create visual disturbances that birds find unsettling. Another option is to use bird repellent sprays or gels that have odors or tastes that birds dislike. I hope this helps you with this problem!
@@notionbonsai Thank you so much. I have tried those sprays, but the darn birds are immune to them here in Spain. Horrible creatures!!!!!!!
I will try the mesh. Thank you so much for your reply!
Phenomenal ..Bravo ! i am speechless and a bit jealous to be honest , where can i get such giant dawn redwoods from please ???
Hello there! If you are located in Dublin, i can get you dawn redwoods :)
Hi , shame im in north London @@attilacsintalan3285
Attila .. Thank you for asking and trying to help
How old were the seedlings planted and if you could share how you are trimming the tap root. I was really nervous about cutting it and seeing it survive. Great content and thank you.
Hello. The trees are 4 years old ;)
We only removed a reallyyyy small amount of the roots so it was okay. If you really want to be on the safe side you can wait until spring before pruning the roots 🤗🌱🌳
Please don't forget to update us on this one ^_^
I will!! Thank you so much for your support ❤🤗🌳
👍👌🙂
Hey Bruce! 🤗
Is the soil you used what's best for dawn redwood? Not inorganic bonsai soil?
They do like to be in a more wet soil but i'm sure they would live in either. 🤗 This soil it is in will mean it needs watered less often 🙂
Lovely work - my only gripe is the that one tree (I think number 7 from viewer's left) that has movement that is very jarring and inconsistent with the rest of the trees.
Thanks for the kind words! Ahh I totally know what you mean! Some imperfections are okay to me as nothing is perfect in nature ☺
Where are you located? Ireland?
Bro we need an update on your 2year old apple tree from seed after that big chop and repot.
Its still alive! Looking well! Hasnt progressed much to do a video on it yet but I will post an update on my instagram soon! 🙂
@@notionbonsai awesome! Thank you I was really inspired by your apple from seed videos I just had 2 apple seeds sprout for me and they are my first apple trees so I'm hoping I can be like you and have similar success. Much love from California keep it up 🤙
Nice but I don’t think I can get those nursery trees here . Usually they are bigger and also more expensive. I have in the past got seedlings from the wild. But not Dawn redwoods. Whatever is local, like cedars , spruce, fir,
Hey Sharon. If you are located in Dublin/Ireland i can get you dawn redwoods 😊
I’m in the Pacific Northwest British Columbia canada. So would be very costly to ship if they could be imported.
Great job, but I noticed one tree in the middle with a badly distorted trunk compared to the others. It takes away from the overall composition of the group, but otherwise, nice job..
Ohh! I know what you mean! I liked this feature of it as I think it shows the beauty of imperfection 🙂
dawn redwood? I don't know how I mention that tree in Indonesia 😊
What is this kind of trees??
Hey! They are Dawn Redwood
Ha ha, that is a funny oxymoron, "GIANT Redwood BONSAI forest, or was it just funny to me??
It does sound funny! 😅 Though Bonsai can also be bigg 🤗🌳
please grow a bread.
Not my style but thanks! 🤗🤗
@@notionbonsai Was that suppose to be beard????
Great video. That forest looks awesome.
ngl maybe its just the video, but these seem to be to much 'in a straight line' for my eye, but then each their own, do whatever you like, there are no mistakes.
Atilas are you living in Ireland?
Hey! 🤗🤗
