After my divorce, the smear campaign, missing my kids half the week put me in a downward spiral. Quit the newspaper. Quit reading books. Quit television and movies. And last I gave up music. It all hurt too much. Months of hell and then I finally went out with friends. I went up to the jukebox out of habit. Played this song. People all around us started singing it. I started singing it. And right then I knew I was gonna be okay. This song means everything to me. It’s when I got my soul back.

This song was getting heavy airplay in 1975, when I was on the downside of a rollercoaster relationship in South Carolina (where the group was based, also my home state), and living in Georgia. No freight train was involved, and she wasn't really mean, it was complicated.
So... I was living it and feeling this song bone deep, every time.
BTW, no one in the band was named Marshall Tucker. They were thinking they needed a name, and they were renting space to practice in a warehouse (not far from where I was born), and the door key was inscribed "Marshall Tucker" - a piano tuner. They thought that sounded down home cool and used it.

Never seen a flute in a song before? OK, then. Marshall Tucker Band brought Southern rock out of Spartanburg, South Carolina,. Cross over to England and find the band Jethro Tull that mashes up blues, rock, and an alternate-universe Middle Ages with hell-a-cious flute. Find "Locomotive Breath" or "Cross-Eyed Mary" for something COMPLETELY different.

I believe a couple of them were sent into Viet Nam. This is considered Southern Rock, similar bands Allman Brothers, Lenard Skynrd, J.J. Cale band just few other Southern Rock.

This band is from my hometown, Spartanburg, SC. In high school my girlfriend and I rode my 125 cc dirt bike 60 back road miles to see their concert in Clemson, SC.
The singer of this song Toy Caldwell isn't the lead singer of the band. The guy playing the Tambourine, Doug Gray is. You should check out other songs that he sings. He has an amazing voice. The Live version of Rambling, with Charlie Daniels on fiddle, will send chills down your spine.
Toy's rough voice came from years of smoking cigarettes. Unfortunately he died of throat cancer.
Toy was taught to play guitar by his grandfather who was a banjo player, not a guitar player. Thus Toy picks with his thumb like a banjo player. He was on the cover of ""Guitar Player"magazine as the best thumb picker.
He was a Purple Heart decorated Vietnam Marine.
