- September 3, 1991, (BBC Radio 1, J
ohn Peel Session) Maida Vale Studios, Studios 4 & 5, London, UK
They played this along with Dumb and Endless Nameless.
On WTLO
Kurt's voice at 91 was his best, he forced it in a high tune through all that year and then, 92's 93's 94's he did lower tunes... Of course still rocking :')
Powerful young voice
You are right he sounds very powerful here
It was probably easier for him later on to go for a lower range from the destruction that his singing style did to his vocal cords. Still one of the best out their. A diamond in the rough.
the way he sings "one baaaaaby to another..." at the beginning is so beautiful. his voice was so melodic and yet so raw at the same time...unlike any other rock singer. he could scream on pitch...its analagous to putting your voice through a distortion box. i absolutely love it. the john peel sessions are great because there are no studio tricks like on Nevermind so you get to hear the band so authentically.
Oh. I love the way he sings it too.
it goes perfectly with the opening lick. Flawess.
That's a passionate voice
I like this version better than the album
Eduu Castañeira agreed. Much better
Indeed.
you should listen to the early version from the box set, that one is the best in my opinion.
BBC Sessions version is better than both.
@@johndeesnotebook5790 This one is the BBC Sessions version, isn't it?
when you learn nirvana on guitar.. you realise that his melodies to the guitar riffs are the best possible ones.
I cant imagine playing this riff on drain you and singing a different melody.. it wouldnt fit as perfect.
his voices sound so perfect on this track so young and powerful
This is what Kurt would’ve wanted nevermind to sound when he said the finished product was “too slick”
So much more punk in standard tuning than the album version. Raw
I like this version better than the original
Makes 2 of us
+Louis Addeo-Weiss Listen to the demo of it then. I think thats the best
Cın ßtb same
Louis Addeo-Weiss where did you find original version?
Yes but it's hard to beat all the overdubs Butch vig ended up putting on the final track. Although I agree this solo part is a lot better. Kurt's singing is fantastic too.
Kurt Cobain and John Peel: two of the most important men in music history. R.I.P. to both.
wow..just wow...
having a huge nirvana mid-life crisis revival at the moment ..what a great band ..but you already knew that eh?
While Kurt still went on to write more great songs, this was really the peak of NIrvana musically as performers: The release of Nevermind and the few months afterward. Still so much energy, they were still so tight. And his voice was so raw and powerful. Best version of Drain You for my money.
WITH EEEEYYYEEESSS SO DIIIIAAALATED I'VE BECOME YOU'RE PUPIL.
lOVE THAT.
Goosebumps all over my face after the first 30 seconds.
Anybody know why the Nevermind version is in a lower key than all other live versions and demos? This key works so much better.
Maybe because he was pushing his voice over the top from all the live shows before Nevermind was released.. It was probably easy for him to sing.
The Internet Killed Music you know blew was tuned to drop c by accident because Krist tuned down to far and played the bass line and they liked the dark sound it had
@【 P R I E S T O F H A D E S_ 】 its called harmony
Forever the version that plays in my car!
I'M LOVING THIS!! That flanger effect on the guitar and that massive echo sound on that final drum - WICKED!! That's how they should have done it on the album.
Favorite Nirvana song, this session's version.
I'm legit having it played at my funeral so I can hear it one last time lol
By far the best version of Drain you in standart tuning
Never heard this version on radio. I always knew it as the John Peel version. I have liked every version of DY i have heard. The distorted swirly guitar effect is good.
This coment is almost as old as me , thats weird
@@Redley95 That comment is older than me😭
Better than original..
You're my vitamins.
OH YOU'RE HERE!
Cause I love youuuu
腐った心臓の男Kurizu Kiryu Lmao, what are you doing here?
DeathRocket4990 Hearing this again xd
He never said the L-word :)
by far best live version ive ever heard
The dulles france live performance is epic.
Can't... Stop... listening....
this version should be on ne vermind. awesome
Ralph Shade it is on spotify
jesus crist this version is very grunge
we miss you nirvana :(
1:37 .... and for Kurt Cobain was so astounding as a musician, that Harry Potter used his wand of wizardry to travel on a voyage through time and pay him a visit (look left).
OMG -- The sound Kurt makes in this version is, so, AMAZING. Never will hear a better version of Drain You.
This isn't exactly live. It was recorded in a studio just like the regular version, and they played the parts separately, but they probably took much less time putting it together and used no overdubs. But in most live versions of the song, Dave doesn't do the harmonies ( I don't think).
Very good version as in, My second to the French TV version.
How could one guy make so many powerful songs? Kurt Cobain is a fucking legend.
how can even one person not like this! It's the most amazing version of this song i've ever heard. His voice is beyond good
that scream...
Amazing performance of the one of their best songs.
I want the first picture where can i get it
That's not steam, it's a can of air freshener lol They used it along with other effects in the studio, one item they used was a rubber ducky. :| It still sounds great
This is a very good version but I still think the French TV version is the best.
On WTLO, it said it's a radio performance. It was played along with Dumb and Endless Nameless. (Also uploaded)
Possibly the greatest Nirvana song ever written in my opinion.
@WillHerndon Yeah haha I actually like this more than the Nevermind version xD
This was my favored version for a while
Probably my favourite Nirvana song, it's amazing.
who are the people in the pic at the 1:35 minute?
Holy shit, I just realised this was on my birthday.
Like Chris said you know it’s great art because it draws you in. The whole world was drawn into his music and voice. This is a catchy undeniable powerful song that just knocks you over! It couldn’t be denied and was a highlight of any Nirvana show!
Thanks Kurt! I’m sad you didn’t live longer to enjoy your success more. You deserved better!

I'm lucky to have met you
I don't care what you think unless it is about me
It is now my duty to completely drain you
I travel through a tube and end up in your infection
Chew your meat for you
Pass it back and forth
In a passionate kiss
From my mouth to yours
I like you
With eyes so dilat(ed), I've become your pupil
You (taught) me everything without a poison apple
The water is so yellow, I'm a healthy student
Indebt(ed) and so grateful, vacuum out the fluids

yeah this on the radio for the first time must have been like listening to the future.
Among my Nirvana Fav. along with lounge act and the whole in Utero cd
I could "imagine" John Lennon singing that opening lyric. Kurt got alot on inspirational vocal ideas from john and this song shows. Kurts is different and unique but you can hear the lennon rasp and shout in this version of drain you
@theXoriginalXnac I'm 42 and when Nirvana broke I was 22 in early 1992. It was a great time to be alive. And yes it broke the hair metal mold that had been a stagnant presence for many years and that's why it sounded different when it came out..
the most grungy version ive heard
O meu amor por eles se renova a cada dia vai ficando cada vez mais intenso 🐱🐱😜😜🐱🐱🐱😜😜 Nirvana
I thought it would be pretty obvious that my Auschwitz comment was a joke.
The photo is in black and white and looks quite grainy. The woman in the picture also looks rather frail and has European features. Obviously concentration camps are not something to regularly joke about....but the comment was pretty witty and observant, based on the picture I was remarking on.
...if I do say so myself. :)
This is my favority version of drain you
20 years ago, this song was on the radio.
written 9/3/11 :D
I dunno what you mean by the effects, haha, but it's a live performance.
Did chad channings work mean anything? i guess not. Rock on chad
It did, Chad Channing's work is on Bleach. Dale Crover drummed on Floyd The Barber, Paper Cuts and Downer. The rest were drummed by Chad.
I'm retarded.
yo this is like actually the oldest video , like its from 2007 😮. great from the future
I suppose its impossible to establish whether or not Warhol had "artistic skill" or that he was "a fad that is already passing." All I can say is that his work was unlike anything I'd seen before him and his work makes me feel something.
Kurt had hella skill, what are you rambling on about LOL chill. Warhol was great too, also very skilled.
@@Skywohka no clue. I wrote that 13 years ago 🤷🏾♂️
@TheGoldenShamrocks its class dude, pure class.
This version is better than the album version
Best version of Drain you ever
my fav is the live and loud version, and kurt did smoke even in high school
1:19 looks like Michael Jackson
Jon Elrick yea!
i hate it when people, and mostly other AMATURE musicians diss on kurt guitar playing, cuz he cant play like buckethead to put it that way.funny it always comes from these losers with no lives, who sit in their basement with expensive guitars, having nothing to do but to crap on bands who prefer to write simple but melodic music. Nirvana has a lot of great melodies that keep sticking in your head
if you havent heard DRAIN YOU /LIVE FRENCH TV
on youtube here.....do yourself a favour.......best footage too...skinny ties...Kurts guitar dies /he chucks it and delivers epic scream.......check it out
i define a good guitar player a kurt cobain!! :D
At 2:33 we see a photo from when Nirvana played Auschwitz in 1944.
Touching.
i have this on ultra rare trax Vol 2 i bought it underground style at plan nine about 5 years ago, $20 used illegally to a legit music store lol
@thecookeyfiend never mind. You're right...I didn't do my research. Its also on the Reading festival video. But still, it sounds a lot cleaner when Dave doesn't have to drum at the same time.
How beautiful! Love the rawness and melody of it. Nirvana will always speak to me like no other band.
Krist didnt smoke, he probaly got them from dave, and how the hell do you know about all that, or r u making it up
i love this version, and yeah it sounds hella better cuz its in a higher tune lol
sorry, but when i see a someone write like that i get really mad
This one is about Tobi Vale, Kurt's true love.
Kurt ers genial
Amazing...just 18 days before Nevermind's release
Happy 44th birthday Kurt! Your the best! XD
i know its from 91 i was just correcting him for year he was probaly trying to say
Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
NIRVANAAAAAAAA
This is nothing like the Nevermind version, more than just minor nuances.
Kurt's voice..... It's so perfect in this.
This has got to be the best version of this song ever recorded
"Tsssssssssssss! Tsssssssssss!!! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!!!!"
Great version! That last picture makes Nirvana look like some weird metal band or something though, Where did you get it? I know Pat Smear is in the picture so it was in the last 6 months of their career...
to get this sound just use an electro harmonix small clone.
why do people talk about Auscwitz on a nirvana video xD?
Son cri est une allégorie de la vie.
re: defining a good guitarist. I think one must consider what it means to be a "good" artist in general. Certainly Andy Warhol is considered a great visual artist. However, he did not possess the technical skills of Leonardo DaVinci. Even without technical prowess, he used his personal vision to evoke emotion in a unique way. I think Cobain is a Warhol-type artist while more technical players like Eddie Van Halen are of the DaVinci type. Both are equally excellent but just different.
I honestly don't get what you're saying. I think I do, but oh well. Thanks : ]
Nirvana
@edisdead1 Yeah, but only twenty days before.
lol, i live near auchwitz
lol talking about auschwitz on a nirvana vid
Love the guitar tones.
Kurt couldnt play the guitar well he was pretty much self taught but he knew how to make music simple and amazing thats what sets him apart from the rest
Fucking genius. There are no words to express how good this is.
dude i think its a really ove the top chorus effect if you ask me. when you turn the effect range all the way up you will get tha kind of sound.
man...he fucking died...the way he died just spoils it for me.....read the last 40 pages of heavier than heaven......hardcore drugs are god awful. pot, that's cool. acid, whatever, fine by me. smack, speed, meth.....no.
Great live performance. I love it.
