When I was a kid in the 90s, I befriended another kid. We went to a few pumpkins concert in NYC. We were best friends and blasted SP together all day ,every day. In my 40s now. I lost touch with him over 15 years. I tried finding him for over a decade and couldn't. Pumpkins decided to go on tour 2023. I said gosh would be great to go with my old friend. Ended up finding him through his sisters number in the yellow pages on Saturday. My buddy and I went to SP concert on Wednesday. Finally found him, and I think its due to the magical SP!!!

This video is inspired by a true event. When Billy Corgan was a boy, the local ice cream truck driver got fired and kind of snapped so he ended up giving away all of the ice cream in the truck to young Billy and all the neighborhood kids, all the while ranting "fuck this job!!!" Edit. Source: Today video commentary by Billy on the SP video collection DVD.

With the lyric, "today is the greatest day," some listeners misinterpreted this as a hopeful song, when it was just the opposite. Billy Corgan said: "I was really suicidal. I just thought it was funny to write a song that said today is the greatest day of your life because it can't get any worse." ♥

When I was young, my dad was diagnosed with Hepatitis C and Liver Disease. He was given a 15% chance to live. The day he found out, he came home, decided to drink one last time, blared this album on our home stereo, and cried. I remember feeling heartbroken despite not really knowing what was going on and crying with him. His will to live and perseverance saw him through a grueling chemotherapy regimen and he's still here fifteen years later, but I'll always think about that day when I listen to this song.

Despite the lyrical ground being about depression and suicide tendencies, the whole concept of the lyrics approaches inspiration and hope, telling people to always look into the good side of the shit to find strenght (specially when things can't go any worse), and not to contemplate or romanticize suicide.

    Today is the greatest
    Day I’ve ever known
    Can’t live for tomorrow
    Tomorrow’s much too long
    I’ll burn my eyes out
    Before I get out
    [Verse 1]
    I wanted more
Than life could ever grant me
    Bored by the chore
    Of saving face
    [Chorus 2]
    Today is the greatest
    Day I’ve ever known
    Can’t wait for tomorrow
I might not have that long
    I’ll tear my heart out
    Before I get out
    [Verse 2]
    Pink ribbon scars
    That never forget
    I tried so hard
    To cleanse these regrets
    My angel wings
    Were bruised and restrained
    My belly stings
    [Chorus 3]
    Today is
    Today is
    Today is
    The greatest day
    [Bridge]

You're not trying hard enough to find good music AND you're not a kid going through changes so you can't relate to all the emotional transformation that results in great music, so it doesn't resonate like it once did AND your hearing diminishes with age, so subtilties of music get lost where once they were heavily stimulating your prefrontal cortex and occipital lobe. With music like this, from your generation, you have a huge chunk of muscle memory that gets stimulated and reinforced when you hear it. That's real, physical connections inside your brain and listening to this is like a little workout for that muscle or new paving on the highway of the mind as it were. LIstening to new music is like learning a new dance routine, or fitness regime, unless you make a habit of it to reinforce the network, you're brain will just prune back the experience, effect and memory.

@@iGame3D"not trying hard enough to find good music" - One has to look very, VERYdamn hard to find good music these days, and even then it's a matter of luck.
The rest of the bs you wrote is exactly that. Wolfgang had it right: the music industry does not allow new rock music to reach the vast majority of potential customers who would be very receptive to good rock (for the most part anyway), and they only allow poppy music or hiphop to be heard (again, for the most part).
You can try to deny it, but doing so would just be an act of deflection.

It also conjures the feeling people get when they have completely given up hope, and that you've accepted your fate, that of suicide and are actually happy that things are ending. It's the most upbeat sad song in existence to me. I love it, but I understand completely what Billy Corgan was going through when he wrote the song.

do you know what this songs about though ? (not that it changes the feel for you) but
its about suicide...about Billy Corgan (he wrote it in the early 90s after their first album (GISH) in 1991...he was depressed, and on the brink of suicide (literally every week he kept pushing it off, and he decided he was going to kill himself on a friday) and when friday came...he said "do it pussy, stop hesitating stop being a dumb fucking pussy...ok well if I cant kill myself, and I dont have the nerves...well then I am going to sit down and write a song...cause today...well today must suck, but guess what if I cant kill myself then I am alive...and I guess thats fine, Ill just deal with it...so today must be the greatest day of my life, the day I decided to live, I cant wait for tomorrow though...cause I might not have that long"
that is literally how the song was created, this song is (literally) about suicide and the idea of suicide, and on-the-verge- of killing yourself...its like the worse & best day at the same time...
some of the best songs, are usually the darkest songs (literally)

Too bad those guy's music was so serious to them. I mean look how many of those guys killed each other. Biggie....gone....Tupac gone....and a bunch of guys in prison. That's probably some of my reason for not liking rap. But really I just don't think it's good music, buy of course I know millions of people love it. To each his own. I've been playing guitar for over 50 years. Since I grew up in the 70's and 80's pretty much. You know... Zeppelin.... The Who.... Stones, Bad Co.....Rush....UFO.....you see rock and roll. So I learned that kinda stuff on guitar. There wasn't much rap back then. On another subject....read John 3:3-6 in the Bible. That piece of scripture changed my life in 1981. I didn't know that Jesus said that. I invited Him into my heart 💓 and have had a relationship with Him and The Father by The Holy Spirit living in my heart. My sins won't be counted against me because I have received forgiveness for them. I still am a sinner and need forgiveness all the time. But at least I don't fear death anyone because He promises eternal life in heaven and in my heart I know I will make it there, plus He helps me in my life here until I die. I know that's a lot to say to you about God, but someone took the time in 1981 to tell me and now I'm doing it for you. I didn't plan on saying any of this. It just happened. So I know God must have known that you needed to hear this. I'm just a messenger. I hope you can receive this with an open heart. God loves you more than you and I can even comprehend. A lot of people think they know God but they are still dead in their sins. Okay....I'm done. Check out a song called Rushing Wind...by Keith Green. That song is touching to the heart. No more rap friend. Try Michael Schenker.

    Today is the greatest
    Day I've ever known
    Can't live for tomorrow,
    Tomorrow's much too long
    I'll burn my eyes out
    Before I get out
    I wanted more
Than life could ever grant me
    Bored by the chore
    Of saving face
    Today is the greatest
    Day I've never known
    Can't wait for tomorrow
I might not have that long
    I'll tear my heart out
    Before I get out
    Pink ribbon scars

Couldn’t afford to buy merch, but there was a shirt that I just loved and I wanted it so badly and can you believe I found one on the floor at the concert? I even held it up and asked anybody near me if it was theirs and nobody said yes, so I got the T-shirt I wanted for free and there was a couple there who bought me and my best friend beers too. That was back when you could get away with that shit!! Amazing night!!

The very obvious pain that he's expressing through the lyrics the hardships of youth and the struggles of life and the disappointment that everyone eventually faces when they realize things don't work out like you thought they would, as well as the suicidal undertones. And the video itself is just very different and tells a strange story which I believe was inspired by an ice cream man who gave away his stock of ice cream to the kids before he quit in billy corgans neighborhood when he was a child.

The memories while this album played. Could fill volumes. It was part of what made up the soundtrack of me and my friends lives of slightly misspent youth. I will always love it, and the album it came from. When I hear any tracks from it, I’m instantly taken back to those times, and those friends, where we kicked around in a town just like any other, longing to get out of there, go anywhere; anywhere but there. Bonfires on the beach, the skating rink, the arcade, the public library-they were all our homes away from home. All our “haunts” if you will. Seems like a lifetime ago now, because it really was. Yet it’s still so vivid in my minds eye that it all could have happened yesterday.; yet it was long ago and gone now, all once upon a time. I’ll never forget those friends and all the great times we shared as this classic track and album played in rotation.

The song is also about the day that Billy decided not to commit suicide. And for me it's rather special considering today is February 15th 2022. About 7 or 8 years ago my cousin called me and we were talking on the phone as I was walking downtown in Chicago and he asked me about this song and I explained to him what it was about he didn't know that and he found it very interesting and profound because he actually had heard the song and he loved it. He knew I was a fan of the pumpkins. A few years after that my cousin committed suicide. I heard this song or I thought about it about a day or two ago and I decided to post this on his birthday. Cuz we didn't just talk about what the song was we went way deeper than that. It wasn't about dying it was about the joy of living and rising above whatever it was that held you down. And I wish somehow we would have been able to talk before he did that maybe we could have recaptured that feeling and that energy and maybe he would have realized that today is the greatest day he ever knew.

Been there at least 4 times ready to go. My life hasn't gotten better.
I will tell you all two things: 1. Music literally saved my life because I was distracted by singing along and memorizing lyrics.
    2. I love my cats.
Make fun of me all ya want, but depression, hardcore addiction, abuse, wtf-ever else has tried but I "cannot be killed by conventional means" (like so many of us).

I don't know what traumas and challenges you've experienced, and I want to offer some enlightening advice, but I genuinely don't feel like I'm in the position to offer anything. I would argue to change your perspective, but that only works for me because I'm not suffering too hard right now (college kid, living at home with folks).
That's not to say I haven't been severely depressed before, but luckily a change in schools helped a lot. Unfortunately, it's not usually that easy to get out of the rut. I was scared to make change because of the uncertainty, but realized that I didn't really have many friends to begin with, so what's the worst that can happen? More bullying? Not likely since literally the entire grade was new (the school had just opened a middle school at the time)
I currently have an addiction as well (video games). Luckily my poison of choice isn't something I'm chemically dependent on, so I'm grateful for that.
When it comes to addiction, I'd recommend maybe winging yourself off of your drug of choice (unless you're clean, congrats, and ignore thi) and letting those around you be aware of your issues and tell them that you have a plan and ask them to monitor you closely, so you don't relapse. I've been in situations where I'm like "I've done a good job, let me play for an hour" and realize I just spent all day online. I need my folks to moderate my behavior so I don't 'overdose'. I watch RUclips and write programs to prevent relapse
regardless, hope your life gets better : )

Oh man, I don't know where to begin.
First of all--Thank you for your comment. It shows empathy, and we all sure as hell need more of that.
There are a couple things though...
My drug of choice with video games has to be Mario Bros. 3 on original NES, haha. Showing my age here.
I'm not quite sure what withdrawal from video games would be like, but any addict will tell you this--Be happy it's not drugs.
*Please do not suggest "winging it" to get off chemicals though. This is dangerous. Withdrawal from a whole assortment of things can kill you. I've been there. Weaning is the best. I've lost enough friends.
Enjoy the living at home thing, it won't last. And college... well I was forced to go to community college by my parental units. I preferred to work instead. Back in those days jobs were easier to find. I went to that college, but would just leave. Then four planes were hijacked and all our lives changed. No more fake going to school. I cut my folks off years ago, no contact. Clueless to this day as to why they even had kids. So be happy you don't have to worry if you'll have a place to sleep tonight.
I don't really know what to say to ya though, you're so young. I haven't talked to anyone your age in decades. I could be old enough to be your mom maybe (41 today).
I worry for the younger generations. You guys missed out on so much. I never had kids so I don't really know the "adult" advice to give ya.
I just want you to be strong, happy and don't let the world get ya down (too much). We all need you young folks.
Anyways, I did get off my drug of choice (heroin) like 4ish years ago when fentanyl took over. Shit's not worth it. But when you're 41 and have been chemically dependent since age 13 your brain and body change. I will never be fully "sober", nor do I want to be. Some people just truly need the help of meds.
One bit of advice I can give ya with your video game issue, I would try to start to swap that out a bit (wean!) with something else you like so you're not playing as much. And don't ever beat yourself up if you slip. Relapse is part of recovery.
Thank you for talking to me. You seem like a good egg. Back to my B-Day Breakfast Beer. I'm rooting for you.--C

I remember my father playing this in the car when I was 6. Naturally as a kid, you think that a high-pitched singing voice is a girl. When I first saw the music video I was in unparalleled shock. From that moment on it opened my musical horizon in so many ways. After not really caring about the pumpkins for years, today in 2020 at 17 years old, I appreciate and love the Pumpkins so much.

It was the first song I played as a bass player in my first band in a pub in the historic center of Rome ... I was 15 years old more or less, and I remember the thrill of playing it. TODAY, 42 years old, while I work in front of this damn computer, I listen to this masterpiece and find the exact same emotions as when I was a teenager. Thanks Smashing Pumpkins, thank you very much.

Yup, it's exactly the same for me. I was born in the year 1980, so I was a teenager when this album (Siamese Dream) came out in 1993. Listening to it takes me right back to my High School years.
The 80's and 90's had some really amazing music! It's hard to pick which decade's music I enjoy listening to more because all of the music was just so incredible.
One thing the 90's has over any other decade is the rap music. I'm mostly a rock guy, but I do enjoy the rap music that came out during the 90's. It was so good that it's made it impossible for me to enjoy anything new that's released these days. Especially all the mumble rap nonsense that all the kids nowadays like so much. I know that makes me sound like an old man, but I got to hear new music when it was released from gianta like NWA, Wu-Tang Clan, Cypress Hill, Tupac, Biggie, Snoop, Busta, Jay-Z, and everyone else from that time-frame; and it's spoiled me. I didn't understand at the time that all of those rappers weren't going to be around forever and new "artists" would try to take their places, so I didn't appreciate the music as much as I should've.
I kind of wish that I could go back but as an adult instead of a dumb teenager, and really enjoy those times and all of the great music that was born from those days. Unfortunately, it looks like I'm never going to enjoy anything new, be it rap or rock that comes out in these modern times like I enjoyed the music from the 80's and 90's!

"I entered into this really horrible part of my life. At one point, I ended up sleeping on D'arcy’s floor. I lived in a parking garage for a while. I was completely obsessed with killing myself; it became my primary preoccupation. Out of the depths of this despair, I bottomed out, and it literally came down to a simple decision: either kill yourself or get used to it, work, live and be happy. So I wrote this song... As you can see I chose another kind of death which is rock n' roll... At this point in my life, it's a positive song; it's about survival." -Billy Corgan

"get used to it"? not very healthy way of resolving or coping. Better to seek professional counseling

yayayaya cocococo the first thing they’ll tell you when you get professional help is to recognize what your feeling and not to let those invasive thoughts consume you and rather make them more passive (ofc this is just my experience) so “getting used to it” is not a terrible coping mechanism at all it beats cutting or drugs

    • @Jepysauce
      @Jepysauce 3 года назад +10

Alright let me interject here for a second.
Everyone's coping mechanisms are different as you develop them throughout your life. Obviously - or so I hope - it's better to eventually deal with your feelings and confront them rather than to bottle things up indefinitely until you can't bear them anymore.
"Getting used to it" is part of what people might do to cope for a while, but using someone that managed to barely escape suicide by using music to cope and deal with things as proof of no other (potentially healthier) method to deal with things is pretty narrowminded.
If any of you or anyone reading this is feeling suicidal, please get professional help! There are healthy and unhealthy ways to deal with your feelings and, as sadly advocated for here, bottling them up forever is leaning to the unhealthy side. Feeling bad is okay and you're far from alone for feeling that way. Please talk to someone :)
