When I was a kid in the 90s, I befriended another kid. We went to a few pumpkins concert in NYC. We were best friends and blasted SP together all day ,every day. In my 40s now. I lost touch with him over 15 years. I tried finding him for over a decade and couldn't. Pumpkins decided to go on tour 2023. I said gosh would be great to go with my old friend. Ended up finding him through his sisters number in the yellow pages on Saturday. My buddy and I went to SP concert on Wednesday. Finally found him, and I think its due to the magical SP!!!
Dang, nice to see a story that doesn't end with 'then he died, and every time i hear this song i think of him' or something along those lines like 90% of comments on songs more than 5 years old.
This video is inspired by a true event. When Billy Corgan was a boy, the local ice cream truck driver got fired and kind of snapped so he ended up giving away all of the ice cream in the truck to young Billy and all the neighborhood kids, all the while ranting "fuck this job!!!" Edit. Source: Today video commentary by Billy on the SP video collection DVD.
With the lyric, "today is the greatest day," some listeners misinterpreted this as a hopeful song, when it was just the opposite. Billy Corgan said: "I was really suicidal. I just thought it was funny to write a song that said today is the greatest day of your life because it can't get any worse." ♥
Same happened with R.E.M in "Shiny happy people". The thing is people couldn't understand it neither because the video, it was a stupid dancing video. 100% sarcasm.
I was just listening to that song right before this one and was thinking the same thing. Like, "is sarcasm or irony really that hard for people to understand? No wonder they used to hate playing that song after it went big. None of the people asking them to play it understood what they were asking for."
Exactly me too! That line was me at 18...I did everything to fight for for more and more and more until one day I sold it all and gave the rest away to try things a new way. I felt maybe I wanted too much of the wrong things. I was wrong. Nothing wring with wanting. It's good to want things. Keeps u determined.
Yeah, I only noticed this (albeit many years ago) when someone said this to me and then I listened more closely to the lyrics. He's relieved, comforted and finally happy bc he's ending his life that night via suicide. Made me feel dumb after I was told that, bc the lyrics couldn't be more unambiguous in that regard (once u know, I suppose)
it’s really so weird. while i don’t have depression, i do have a lew of mental anxiety disorders which means much of my days are swallowed by stress and burden basically 24/7. the days that are good are the best days ever. mental health can really humble u fr
When I was young, my dad was diagnosed with Hepatitis C and Liver Disease. He was given a 15% chance to live. The day he found out, he came home, decided to drink one last time, blared this album on our home stereo, and cried. I remember feeling heartbroken despite not really knowing what was going on and crying with him. His will to live and perseverance saw him through a grueling chemotherapy regimen and he's still here fifteen years later, but I'll always think about that day when I listen to this song.
Wow Kat this has truly hit home 🏡 with me on a number of levels I'll keep this short but I have stage 4 liver disease and should have been gone 7 years back though since December losing dad and now all memories of my family's life and dealing with two younger sibs that are as useless as tits on a bull I feel I'm headed to the end but there's more to my picture but I'm very glad to hear your dad is ok now and I wish I had kids and a wife though that's life and now about to hit 50 in a few weeks I'm glad I made it this far but now about to have another cold sweet beverage and yes I do understand what I'm doing but all will be fine and a big Merry Christmas 🎄 ⛄ from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺🦘🤗
My little brother passes away yesterday, I remember he loved this band when he was a kid! He was 23 years old but had an old soul, he found a smashing pumpkins album at our public library when he was 8 and would listen to them non stop from there on out, love you m.j. It’s only been a day yet feels way to long already.. love you brother!
My heart is broken for you. I can’t fathom your loss, so I won’t pretend like I do. I wish you and your family and friends well and hope you find your way through this.
So sorry for your loss, your brother had amazing taste in music. I love my older brother so much, can’t imagine what you’re going through. Stay strong ❤️
For me, this song means being so sick of life, you cant help but laugh at how absurd it is... depression, anxiety everything in one happening at the same time, you cannot help but sing a song like this
I don't know if this was a reference to a dead meme or a clever pun. I don't know whether to cringe or ask, "Have you listened to the Smashing Pumpkins today?"
Space Woona That was a reference to a commercial with "The most interesting man in the world"; he always says "I don't always drink beer. But when I do, I prefer Dos Equis. Stay thirsty my friends".
i'm always alone on my birthday, too, ever since I was 17 or 18, a long time ago. I used to have to work every birthday (always had 2 or 3 job) which was good because then I wasn't home alone. But now I can't work, so... However, I'm very lucky to have a wonderful cat (had 2 but one died after only having her a year) who keeps me company and is always near me. Otherwise I'd have no one. I hope you are able to make a friend or 2, or get a cat. They truly save lives.
Despite the lyrical ground being about depression and suicide tendencies, the whole concept of the lyrics approaches inspiration and hope, telling people to always look into the good side of the shit to find strenght (specially when things can't go any worse), and not to contemplate or romanticize suicide.
"I'll tear my heart out before I give up" indeed, as someone who deals with suicidal ideation, yeah...I've loved this album since I was 13 (I'm 36 now) I don't think I really understood it back then but now it sure hits different
Could be worse... Just whenever I'd say it couldn't, life could. Appreciate the lesson and struggle. Grow thru what we go thru. Bloom anywhere #beeblessed
This song has NOTHING to do with suicide or depression.. its about the damn ice cream man giving corgan all the ice cream in his truck when he was a kid.
I used to record all the music videos on MTV when I was 13. This one included. Brings back a flood of memories of when my innocence was taken away by pre-adulthood. Those are the best memories. My son is now the age I was when I discovered this band/music and it absolutely blows my mind. Named him Kurt. I'll let you guess why.
@@stevemcq.9911 you are the same age as my dad, i was nowhere near born (06) when this album came out and i love it , crazy to think its been out for 30 years and still sounds incredible to modern ears. Amazing
lol this album has like a million overdubs. I think soma had over 60 overdubs. This album has the best guitar fuzz on any album. Sounds like the tone from "sometimes" by my bloody valentine.
My husband and I were in our early 20s when this was released and we played this song a lot. We saw Smashing Pumpkins perform at Lallapaloosa '93. It was a time of being young, poor college students where the big night out was going to a house party. Now I'm in my 50s, living a comfortable life, but hearing this song makes me miss my husband. He passed away a couple of years ago after 28 years of being together.
College memories for me!! Such carefree days! The Gen X kids out in a world of possibilities, on our own and doing our own thing! A great time to be alive!
This is always such a great song to listen to when you're uncertain about life, or tomorrow. Anytime I feel pain, whether it's health-related or psychological, anytime I don't know what tomorrow holds, anytime I have to face the adversities of life, this song is just a good place to be. The lyrics just hit home.
actually found this song from my youth 2 wks ago & it came on the night that one my longtime foster dogs finally found a home.. he was riddled with health issues & this was so amazing & heartwarming. ❤️ unfortunatley, this song is even more bittersweet- he died a day later.. 😓😓😓

You're not trying hard enough to find good music AND you're not a kid going through changes so you can't relate to all the emotional transformation that results in great music, so it doesn't resonate like it once did AND your hearing diminishes with age, so subtilties of music get lost where once they were heavily stimulating your prefrontal cortex and occipital lobe. With music like this, from your generation, you have a huge chunk of muscle memory that gets stimulated and reinforced when you hear it. That's real, physical connections inside your brain and listening to this is like a little workout for that muscle or new paving on the highway of the mind as it were. LIstening to new music is like learning a new dance routine, or fitness regime, unless you make a habit of it to reinforce the network, you're brain will just prune back the experience, effect and memory.
@@iGame3D"not trying hard enough to find good music" - One has to look very, VERYdamn hard to find good music these days, and even then it's a matter of luck. The rest of the bs you wrote is exactly that. Wolfgang had it right: the music industry does not allow new rock music to reach the vast majority of potential customers who would be very receptive to good rock (for the most part anyway), and they only allow poppy music or hiphop to be heard (again, for the most part). You can try to deny it, but doing so would just be an act of deflection.
@@thefallenfaith1986people’s taste in music is completely subjective. What’s good music to you might not necessarily be considered good music to many of today’s youth and vice versa. Please try not to be a condescending jerk.
So i took this girl i liked out on our first date, had a great time. Ride home this came on., She started singing the chorus out of no where! I fell in love. First and only time i heard her sing lol, we been married for 6 years now.
This song helped a lot of us through some tough shit. Shit you don't normally come back from. Thank you Billy Corgan and Smashing Pumpkins for this music. BTW, that ice cream truck driver provided joy to a lot of kids, just like you provide joy to all of us loyal fans. Thank you for your music, you played a part in saving my life
Just a reminder for everyone who needs it to get help. You can talk to a therapist or psychologist. You can also text a free mental health helpline. Hope everyone is doing well.
Jaylie Bathory It totally is. It's about how things can't get any worse and that he just wants to give up it all to so he doesn't have to be what everyone wants him to be. It also conjures the feeling people get when they have completely given up hope, and that you've accepted your fate, that of suicide and are actually happy that things are ending. It's the most upbeat sad song in existence to me. I love it, but I understand completely what Billy Corgan was going through when he wrote the song.
This is one of Billy's most personal songs. Even though this song is about suicide, his genius is that he always spoke his mind. The Pumpkins will go down as one of the greatest bands that never took the easy road and constantly changed their identity, sound, and lyrics.
I will never ever forget sitting on the floor in front of the big tube with the wooden back and seeing this play for the first time on MTV when I was supposed to be in bed. Maybe one of the greatest days of my life 😂
do you know what this songs about though ? (not that it changes the feel for you) but its about suicide...about Billy Corgan (he wrote it in the early 90s after their first album (GISH) in 1991...he was depressed, and on the brink of suicide (literally every week he kept pushing it off, and he decided he was going to kill himself on a friday) and when friday came...he said "do it pussy, stop hesitating stop being a dumb fucking pussy...ok well if I cant kill myself, and I dont have the nerves...well then I am going to sit down and write a song...cause today...well today must suck, but guess what if I cant kill myself then I am alive...and I guess thats fine, Ill just deal with it...so today must be the greatest day of my life, the day I decided to live, I cant wait for tomorrow though...cause I might not have that long" that is literally how the song was created, this song is (literally) about suicide and the idea of suicide, and on-the-verge- of killing yourself...its like the worse & best day at the same time... some of the best songs, are usually the darkest songs (literally)
nostalgic too even when it first released. even though it still feels fresh/refreshing to this day. they seriously had great talent for evocative harmony as a band.
Ha Jordan I think I see what you are saying man. The first rappers were better...DMC....Ice-T.....Snoop Dogg.....Tupac.... okay I'll buy that, fare enough guy. Too bad those guy's music was so serious to them. I mean look how many of those guys killed each other. Biggie....gone....Tupac gone....and a bunch of guys in prison. That's probably some of my reason for not liking rap. But really I just don't think it's good music, buy of course I know millions of people love it. To each his own. I've been playing guitar for over 50 years. Since I grew up in the 70's and 80's pretty much. You know... Zeppelin.... The Who.... Stones, Bad Co.....Rush....UFO.....you see rock and roll. So I learned that kinda stuff on guitar. There wasn't much rap back then. On another subject....read John 3:3-6 in the Bible. That piece of scripture changed my life in 1981. I didn't know that Jesus said that. I invited Him into my heart 💓 and have had a relationship with Him and The Father by The Holy Spirit living in my heart. My sins won't be counted against me because I have received forgiveness for them. I still am a sinner and need forgiveness all the time. But at least I don't fear death anyone because He promises eternal life in heaven and in my heart I know I will make it there, plus He helps me in my life here until I die. I know that's a lot to say to you about God, but someone took the time in 1981 to tell me and now I'm doing it for you. I didn't plan on saying any of this. It just happened. So I know God must have known that you needed to hear this. I'm just a messenger. I hope you can receive this with an open heart. God loves you more than you and I can even comprehend. A lot of people think they know God but they are still dead in their sins. Okay....I'm done. Check out a song called Rushing Wind...by Keith Green. That song is touching to the heart. No more rap friend. Try Michael Schenker.
@@bradleypezy6394 Why is there always one of you in these comments? "Nah man...there is music just as good now." NO THERE ISN'T. The bands you just named...are very bland and are not as good as this.

So many memories of this band and life. When serving in the Army (UK) (99-06) I used to blast their albums out all the time in barracks and people would always ask who they were. A great guy I looked up to Cpl Fordham never returned one of the cds of theirs I leant him haha but I don't care, it's a memory made in time. Great band. Great times. Music and photographs are the best for remembering moments in time ❤
And yes he still has it, hence the memories. We are now miles and miles apart but forever bonded together by our time in the Forces and this great song/album

There’s nothing like being 18 years old when this was new music. Went to see Smashing Pumpkins on this tour twice with my best friends. The early nineties was fun. Few friends I saw them with are no longer here to share the nostalgia. Life happens like that, but couldn’t miss the Pumpkins during this era.
I saw them too near Monterey CA in 97. Couldn’t afford to buy merch, but there was a shirt that I just loved and I wanted it so badly and can you believe I found one on the floor at the concert? I even held it up and asked anybody near me if it was theirs and nobody said yes, so I got the T-shirt I wanted for free and there was a couple there who bought me and my best friend beers too. That was back when you could get away with that shit!! Amazing night!!
Life is and will always be a constant struggle. It’s how we go about it that makes us who we are. We got this my friend! Help others and always remember it isn’t about you . God Bless you 💙
The very obvious pain that he's expressing through the lyrics the hardships of youth and the struggles of life and the disappointment that everyone eventually faces when they realize things don't work out like you thought they would, as well as the suicidal undertones. And the video itself is just very different and tells a strange story which I believe was inspired by an ice cream man who gave away his stock of ice cream to the kids before he quit in billy corgans neighborhood when he was a child.
+Noah Jaybird15 "the disappointment that everyone eventually faces when they realize things don't work out as well as you had hoped" and dreamed of. YES YES YES!!!! I'm so happy that I'm not the only one who was thinking this 'cause I thought I was.
+Noah Jaybird15 I think the ice cream was a metaphor for your childhood happiness that you store in your head. Weather it was a happy childhood or not you tend to only relish and fondly look back on the good happy times
Why can't they make music like this anymore. It was my chill out music with friends as we flipped through magazines thinking about our future and how it would be!
A lot of the music that sells these days sounds like garbage to me. For example: 'Stargazing' which I find unbearable to listen to. Just something about the whiny pitch of the singer and the parts where his sampled voice gets all jumbled up and keeps repeating. I'd rather listen to something corny like the Backstreet Boys over alot of popular songs these days
I used to really hate this band cause I was into metal music and SP were very soft for me, it took me so many years to rediscover them, and I'm addicted to their music, it's so weird how our taste in music change through time it's like the past version of me has nothing to do with me right now.
The greatest band of our generation. Underrated at the time. Overrated now cuz everyone seemed to only stumble upon their greatness late. But still.....dope as fuck. I remember being the only wierdo out of my friends to love smashing pumpkins.
Was the same but opposite. Loved smashing pumpkins, and other grunge, alternative rock bands as a teenager and hated metal like metallica and thought all metal sounds the same and generic but finally got into metallica at 19 during the hardest year of my life when my mental illness got so bad I ended up in the er and mental hospital for a month and would write metallica lyrics on my "coping skills" worksheets they wanted us to use to make me hear the song in my head and feel like I'm at home in my garage listening to them smoking.
@@Lavender_1618 I do agree, our generation was the shit, the late ninetees is the best by far in music and life style generally speaking even pop and RNB was great, without talking about rock and metal. I wish I could turn back to that Era to listen to those bands for the first time, for instance I remember listening to cryptic writings album by megadeth for the first time. I give everything to get back
Shit, I barely discovered them in late 2021 and I already love their stuff. I only found that I had a thing for alt rock in 2020. Before then I never had a favorite music genre,
The memories while this album played. Could fill volumes. It was part of what made up the soundtrack of me and my friends lives of slightly misspent youth. I will always love it, and the album it came from. When I hear any tracks from it, I’m instantly taken back to those times, and those friends, where we kicked around in a town just like any other, longing to get out of there, go anywhere; anywhere but there. Bonfires on the beach, the skating rink, the arcade, the public library-they were all our homes away from home. All our “haunts” if you will. Seems like a lifetime ago now, because it really was. Yet it’s still so vivid in my minds eye that it all could have happened yesterday.; yet it was long ago and gone now, all once upon a time. I’ll never forget those friends and all the great times we shared as this classic track and album played in rotation.
Make the most out of today folks! Be around the ones you hold closest if possible. Live TODAY, enjoy TODAY, make someone feel loved TODAY. WELL FOLKS, do the best you can today. There is no guarantee for tomorrow.
I love this song and video it's awesome and funny in one way I love the part ware they vandalized the truck and throw him out and he don't care that's a sexy attitude in a man
Actually this album was probably one of the most produced and polished album, I heard they used over 40 guitar tracks! Read the story on how they made it, Billy corgan really worked hard on this record along with butch vig
michael ju the smashing pumpkins did still exist in the 80s so go do one. This song is my fav song from growing up so how is that being an attention seeker? You know what Hypocrite means? Look in the mirror and ull find out.
What's interesting is that this song was written during Billy Corgan's darker moments. The lyrics are cynically driven. Thankfully, Billy was able to make his way past that dark time. I know how hard that can be. The world is better with him in it.
I used to play guitar hero world tour when I was like 10 one of their songs was on there one of my favorites I went and searched them up on RUclips and listened to this song loved it I then spent the next couple hours listening to song after song and I couldn't find one I didn't like so that along with my mom introducing me to nirvana (another band that every song I love) pushed me into falling in love with alternative rock before then I didn't really know what I liked musically but i really found myself in the early nineties alt-rock scene which then expanded into every other form of rock/metal/punk now at 17 years old I'm a guitarist and an avid music lover...
I was in 4th or 5th grade when this album came out. I can't even explain the feeling's I get when I hear it. it's life was so simple and beautiful back then. I think about all the house parties and overall great times I had in my youth. To me this song makes me think is a reminder of how precious life is and to always sieze the day. carpe diem
Growing up, my parents always took me to their friends house where we would all play rockband together and this song was always played. Their friends died some years later and this song always reminds me of those nights with them.
The song is also about the day that Billy decided not to commit suicide. And for me it's rather special considering today is February 15th 2022. About 7 or 8 years ago my cousin called me and we were talking on the phone as I was walking downtown in Chicago and he asked me about this song and I explained to him what it was about he didn't know that and he found it very interesting and profound because he actually had heard the song and he loved it. He knew I was a fan of the pumpkins. A few years after that my cousin committed suicide. I heard this song or I thought about it about a day or two ago and I decided to post this on his birthday. Cuz we didn't just talk about what the song was we went way deeper than that. It wasn't about dying it was about the joy of living and rising above whatever it was that held you down. And I wish somehow we would have been able to talk before he did that maybe we could have recaptured that feeling and that energy and maybe he would have realized that today is the greatest day he ever knew.
I remember watching this as a kid. Loved it of course. Then I grew up. I'm almost 41. Never knew until like10 years ago that Billy wrote this while suicidal. Been there at least 4 times ready to go. My life hasn't gotten better. I will tell you all two things: 1. Music literally saved my life because I was distracted by singing along and memorizing lyrics. 2. I love my cats. Make fun of me all ya want, but depression, hardcore addiction, abuse, wtf-ever else has tried but I "cannot be killed by conventional means" (like so many of us). I'm trying. "The only failure is not to try."
@vwvwvhauntwvwvwwvwvwvwvwv8646 Naa? Misread what I wrote much? What I said (summarized) pretty much was that most (that I've known) suicidal people and ones that have been is that we/they all DO try to push on at some point at least. Honey, been there 4 times cuz I "had enough". You're preaching to the choir. Instead of getting all testy, next time read and comprehend. You and I were talking about the same damn thing. I hope the surgery to get the stick outta your ass goes well. Peace.
I don't know what traumas and challenges you've experienced, and I want to offer some enlightening advice, but I genuinely don't feel like I'm in the position to offer anything. I would argue to change your perspective, but that only works for me because I'm not suffering too hard right now (college kid, living at home with folks). That's not to say I haven't been severely depressed before, but luckily a change in schools helped a lot. Unfortunately, it's not usually that easy to get out of the rut. I was scared to make change because of the uncertainty, but realized that I didn't really have many friends to begin with, so what's the worst that can happen? More bullying? Not likely since literally the entire grade was new (the school had just opened a middle school at the time) I currently have an addiction as well (video games). Luckily my poison of choice isn't something I'm chemically dependent on, so I'm grateful for that. When it comes to addiction, I'd recommend maybe winging yourself off of your drug of choice (unless you're clean, congrats, and ignore thi) and letting those around you be aware of your issues and tell them that you have a plan and ask them to monitor you closely, so you don't relapse. I've been in situations where I'm like "I've done a good job, let me play for an hour" and realize I just spent all day online. I need my folks to moderate my behavior so I don't 'overdose'. I watch RUclips and write programs to prevent relapse regardless, hope your life gets better : )
@@popcultureprogrammer2171 Oh man, I don't know where to begin. First of all--Thank you for your comment. It shows empathy, and we all sure as hell need more of that. There are a couple things though... My drug of choice with video games has to be Mario Bros. 3 on original NES, haha. Showing my age here. I'm not quite sure what withdrawal from video games would be like, but any addict will tell you this--Be happy it's not drugs. *Please do not suggest "winging it" to get off chemicals though. This is dangerous. Withdrawal from a whole assortment of things can kill you. I've been there. Weaning is the best. I've lost enough friends. Enjoy the living at home thing, it won't last. And college... well I was forced to go to community college by my parental units. I preferred to work instead. Back in those days jobs were easier to find. I went to that college, but would just leave. Then four planes were hijacked and all our lives changed. No more fake going to school. I cut my folks off years ago, no contact. Clueless to this day as to why they even had kids. So be happy you don't have to worry if you'll have a place to sleep tonight. I don't really know what to say to ya though, you're so young. I haven't talked to anyone your age in decades. I could be old enough to be your mom maybe (41 today). I worry for the younger generations. You guys missed out on so much. I never had kids so I don't really know the "adult" advice to give ya. I just want you to be strong, happy and don't let the world get ya down (too much). We all need you young folks. Anyways, I did get off my drug of choice (heroin) like 4ish years ago when fentanyl took over. Shit's not worth it. But when you're 41 and have been chemically dependent since age 13 your brain and body change. I will never be fully "sober", nor do I want to be. Some people just truly need the help of meds. One bit of advice I can give ya with your video game issue, I would try to start to swap that out a bit (wean!) with something else you like so you're not playing as much. And don't ever beat yourself up if you slip. Relapse is part of recovery. Thank you for talking to me. You seem like a good egg. Back to my B-Day Breakfast Beer. I'm rooting for you.--C
All of us artists paint our paintings with the blood from our open wounds. There is nothing more beautiful than an artist sharing this for the world to enjoy!
I remember my father playing this in the car when I was 6. Naturally as a kid, you think that a high-pitched singing voice is a girl. When I first saw the music video I was in unparalleled shock. From that moment on it opened my musical horizon in so many ways. After not really caring about the pumpkins for years, today in 2020 at 17 years old, I appreciate and love the Pumpkins so much.
I grew up with Smashing Pumpkins, REM, Depeche Mode and INXS, this kept me sane and survived a comunist regime ...can't wait to see them for my first time ever, in Glasgow in June 🥰😍
This girl I went to Highschool with and was really close too passed away a couple years ago and one day on one of our walks home from school she said “I love smashing pumpkins” and I said “why would you smash pumpkins” that was one of the greatest days I’ve ever known and I wish I could go back just to jam with her one last time.
Imagine in a hundred years when we are on the 12th Britney clone and manufactured boy bands, and your great grandson finds an old memory stick in a tin box in the attic...
It was the first song I played as a bass player in my first band in a pub in the historic center of Rome ... I was 15 years old more or less, and I remember the thrill of playing it. TODAY, 42 years old, while I work in front of this damn computer, I listen to this masterpiece and find the exact same emotions as when I was a teenager. Thanks Smashing Pumpkins, thank you very much.
Yup, it's exactly the same for me. I was born in the year 1980, so I was a teenager when this album (Siamese Dream) came out in 1993. Listening to it takes me right back to my High School years. The 80's and 90's had some really amazing music! It's hard to pick which decade's music I enjoy listening to more because all of the music was just so incredible. One thing the 90's has over any other decade is the rap music. I'm mostly a rock guy, but I do enjoy the rap music that came out during the 90's. It was so good that it's made it impossible for me to enjoy anything new that's released these days. Especially all the mumble rap nonsense that all the kids nowadays like so much. I know that makes me sound like an old man, but I got to hear new music when it was released from gianta like NWA, Wu-Tang Clan, Cypress Hill, Tupac, Biggie, Snoop, Busta, Jay-Z, and everyone else from that time-frame; and it's spoiled me. I didn't understand at the time that all of those rappers weren't going to be around forever and new "artists" would try to take their places, so I didn't appreciate the music as much as I should've. I kind of wish that I could go back but as an adult instead of a dumb teenager, and really enjoy those times and all of the great music that was born from those days. Unfortunately, it looks like I'm never going to enjoy anything new, be it rap or rock that comes out in these modern times like I enjoyed the music from the 80's and 90's!
"I entered into this really horrible part of my life. At one point, I ended up sleeping on D'arcy’s floor. I lived in a parking garage for a while. I was completely obsessed with killing myself; it became my primary preoccupation. Out of the depths of this despair, I bottomed out, and it literally came down to a simple decision: either kill yourself or get used to it, work, live and be happy. So I wrote this song... As you can see I chose another kind of death which is rock n' roll... At this point in my life, it's a positive song; it's about survival." -Billy Corgan
yayayaya cocococo the first thing they’ll tell you when you get professional help is to recognize what your feeling and not to let those invasive thoughts consume you and rather make them more passive (ofc this is just my experience) so “getting used to it” is not a terrible coping mechanism at all it beats cutting or drugs
Alright let me interject here for a second. Everyone's coping mechanisms are different as you develop them throughout your life. Obviously - or so I hope - it's better to eventually deal with your feelings and confront them rather than to bottle things up indefinitely until you can't bear them anymore. "Getting used to it" is part of what people might do to cope for a while, but using someone that managed to barely escape suicide by using music to cope and deal with things as proof of no other (potentially healthier) method to deal with things is pretty narrowminded. If any of you or anyone reading this is feeling suicidal, please get professional help! There are healthy and unhealthy ways to deal with your feelings and, as sadly advocated for here, bottling them up forever is leaning to the unhealthy side. Feeling bad is okay and you're far from alone for feeling that way. Please talk to someone :)
I know this is a song about depression, but when I was a kid I asked my cousin what this song was about. He said it was about having a really great day, because it was the 1990s and everyday in the 90s was the best day ever.

This song really embodies the feeling of “having nothing specific to be sad about, but also having nothing to be happy about”

This is awesome I'm happy for you

This may be one of the most heartwarming SP fan stories I've heard. 🖤

Totally!
“My belly stings”. We all know that feeling, when you have a stomach knot due to your depression.

Its amazing to know he’s doing better

Despite the lyrical ground being about depression and suicide tendencies, the whole concept of the lyrics approaches inspiration and hope, telling people to always look into the good side of the shit to find strenght (specially when things can't go any worse), and not to contemplate or romanticize suicide.
"I'll tear my heart out before I give up" indeed, as someone who deals with suicidal ideation, yeah...I've loved this album since I was 13 (I'm 36 now) I don't think I really understood it back then but now it sure hits different

This song captures the feelings of my days in middle school. Why isn’t there any good music like this these days?
Cause music nowadays conforms to industry standards being it either has to sound poppy or rap/autotune esque

It'll get better someday. But at least you got great music to get you through and I know how it feels, I'm in high school too
This song is totally about suicide though. Billy Corgan was fucking insane with depression.
Well the music might be depressing but like...I can't explain it but no matter what a song is about if a song is good it just...carries you through...
"You're not the only one whose life is a piece shit, but somehow miraculously we all seem to deal with it."
The freedom of the sound of the 90s simply can't be matched today.
Neither can the 80's.
Neither can the 00s
This is one of Billy's most personal songs. Even though this song is about suicide, his genius is that he always spoke his mind. The Pumpkins will go down as one of the greatest bands that never took the easy road and constantly changed their identity, sound, and lyrics.
I will never ever forget sitting on the floor in front of the big tube with the wooden back and seeing this play for the first time on MTV when I was supposed to be in bed. Maybe one of the greatest days of my life 😂

Alexis Arrizon I do that now, I’m 18 just get stoned af. Times ticking. Life stops for no one
do you know what this songs about though ? (not that it changes the feel for you) but
its about suicide...about Billy Corgan (he wrote it in the early 90s after their first album (GISH) in 1991...he was depressed, and on the brink of suicide (literally every week he kept pushing it off, and he decided he was going to kill himself on a friday) and when friday came...he said "do it pussy, stop hesitating stop being a dumb fucking pussy...ok well if I cant kill myself, and I dont have the nerves...well then I am going to sit down and write a song...cause today...well today must suck, but guess what if I cant kill myself then I am alive...and I guess thats fine, Ill just deal with it...so today must be the greatest day of my life, the day I decided to live, I cant wait for tomorrow though...cause I might not have that long"
that is literally how the song was created, this song is (literally) about suicide and the idea of suicide, and on-the-verge- of killing yourself...its like the worse & best day at the same time...
some of the best songs, are usually the darkest songs (literally)

nah, youre not searching good enough. there are a lot of good bands out now, like thee oh sees and ty segall
jordan gates rap absolutely sucks... No singing just a bunch of digital crappy beats with someone talking crap
Thomas Cusik that’s pretty much mainstream rap nowadays but back then it didnt
Today is the greatest
Day I've ever known
Can't live for tomorrow,
Tomorrow's much too long
I'll burn my eyes out
Before I get out
I wanted more
Than life could ever grant me
Bored by the chore
Of saving face

Can't wait for tomorrow
I might not have that long
I'll tear my heart out
Before I get out

To cleanse these regrets

You are so lucky!!! I wish I was a teen in the 80s or 90s so baddd. I'm so sorry for your loss aswell❤🩹
80’s and 90’s…you should have been there. Best times to be alive!
Thank you Guitar Hero for showing me what good music really is.

Life is and will always be a constant struggle. It’s how we go about it that makes us who we are. We got this my friend! Help others and always remember it isn’t about you . God Bless you 💙
I am not joking. This song was the first song that came on when my husband and I finally took our daughter home from NICU. I will never forget.
Hope you’re all doing well now xx
This is one of the most emotional and surreal music videos ever.
why?
The very obvious pain that he's expressing through the lyrics the hardships of youth and the struggles of life and the disappointment that everyone eventually faces when they realize things don't work out like you thought they would, as well as the suicidal undertones. And the video itself is just very different and tells a strange story which I believe was inspired by an ice cream man who gave away his stock of ice cream to the kids before he quit in billy corgans neighborhood when he was a child.
No one is looking forward to our ultimate demise, I like your post. Look up the word "time."
Loved being a teenager during the 90's. And loved reading the comments posted here. All you guys rock. Stay awesome!
Why can't they make music like this anymore. It was my chill out music with friends as we flipped through magazines thinking about our future and how it would be!
Ashley Boykin it won't sell ... theoretically
Did your future turn out anything like you expected?
There are still good music out there but u just have to find them that’s no within the mainstream area
There're still plenty of indie rock bands out there. Every generation thinks their music is best.
30 years young today, I still love it.
I used to really hate this band cause I was into metal music and SP were very soft for me, it took me so many years to rediscover them, and I'm addicted to their music, it's so weird how our taste in music change through time it's like the past version of me has nothing to do with me right now.
Dude, you took the thoughts right out of my head. This how I felt, and now I can’t get enough of them
The greatest band of our generation.
Before then I never had a favorite music genre,
One of their best songs! This was when they were at their best, the whole album Siamese Dream is a winner from start to end!
Tonight is the best EVER lol
Definitely one of the best
Thanks for this

That's the sound right there... no clicktrack, no autotuning... just raw and honest music going straight to tape... perfect.
There's nothing wrong with either if done right and not overused
I love this song and video it's awesome and funny in one way I love the part ware they vandalized the truck and throw him out and he don't care that's a sexy attitude in a man
Minnish he didn’t say there was anything wrong with it, just implying that he liked raw and real music without the auto tune
Actually this album was probably one of the most produced and polished album, I heard they used over 40 guitar tracks! Read the story on how they made it, Billy corgan really worked hard on this record along with butch vig
Prob has clicktrack tho
One of the best songs I ever listened to when growing up in the 90s.

What's interesting is that this song was written during Billy Corgan's darker moments. The lyrics are cynically driven. Thankfully, Billy was able to make his way past that dark time. I know how hard that can be. The world is better with him in it.
Too Bad Kurt couldn’t do so

i think im gonna start listening to this band seriously
Weezer Fanatic you're just now starting to think about listening to them? OMG.
haha!!! me too
They're one of my favorite bands. People shit on their newer stuff but I don't mind it.
Nomad 17 nice story my dude.
I was in 4th or 5th grade when this album came out. I can't even explain the feeling's I get when I hear it. it's life was so simple and beautiful back then. I think about all the house parties and overall great times I had in my youth. To me this song makes me think is a reminder of how precious life is and to always sieze the day. carpe diem
Thank you, Smashing Pumpkins.
The 90's should have never ended....
💘😒
I remember watching this as a kid. Loved it of course.
Then I grew up. I'm almost 41. Never knew until like10 years ago that Billy wrote this while suicidal.
Been there at least 4 times ready to go. My life hasn't gotten better.
I will tell you all two things: 1. Music literally saved my life because I was distracted by singing along and memorizing lyrics.
2. I love my cats.
Make fun of me all ya want, but depression, hardcore addiction, abuse, wtf-ever else has tried but I "cannot be killed by conventional means" (like so many of us).
I'm trying.

Naa?
Not likely since literally the entire grade was new (the school had just opened a middle school at the time)
I currently have an addiction as well (video games).
I watch RUclips and write programs to prevent relapse
regardless, hope your life gets better : )

Oh man, I don't know where to begin.
Hey! Know that you are loved! Keep on listenin to the music. Keep putting one foot in front of the other!

Back when music was REAL music. I love this song.
MISA from Band-Maid is also a fan. You are welcome.
I grew up with Smashing Pumpkins, REM, Depeche Mode and INXS, this kept me sane and survived a comunist regime ...can't wait to see them for my first time ever, in Glasgow in June 🥰😍

Yes, completely. Hold fast to those feelings and yet, we must let them pass. But as they pass, we hold them dear.

Lol for me a kid lol 🙌
"get used to it"? not very healthy way of resolving or coping. Better to seek professional counseling
yayayaya cocococo Yeah? What amazing songs have you written again?
yayayaya cocococo the first thing they’ll tell you when you get professional help is to recognize what your feeling and not to let those invasive thoughts consume you and rather make them more passive (ofc this is just my experience) so “getting used to it” is not a terrible coping mechanism at all it beats cutting or drugs

Being 13 when this came out was so fortunate.
I know this is a song about depression, but when I was a kid I asked my cousin what this song was about. He said it was about having a really great day, because it was the 1990s and everyday in the 90s was the best day ever.
Why are the 90s days better?
