    I was looking online today this exact type of product. I decided to check your channel first before committing to one and I'm very glad I did. Thanks for the review!

    Thanks for the honest review. After seeing a video about these filters last year I bought one. I'm pretty happy that I chose a no name one which was a lot cheaper than the brand ones from Kase or Lonely Specks. In my region thee is a lot of light pollution. I was hardly able to see any star bright enough to use the filter. Another problem I ran into is that I usually shoot a foreground as well. But it is not easy to shoot the foreground at blue hour and than move your lense to a very bright star to focus and then return to the same composition as before. If I had bought an expensive one I would regret it probably.

    Good information. Thanks for taking the time to review. I learned a bit and appreciate it! I had to increase the payback to 1.25 though because it was a little too slow.

    3d printer is the best purchase for bahtinov masks if you have a bunch of scopes and lenses. I have tons of different size bahtinov masks, printed for all my scopes and lenses, and have never actually purchased one.

    • @ronstewtsaw
      @ronstewtsaw 3 года назад

      @NG I have not found a formula or calculator for these masks. I know that there are optimal geometries for different lenses (maybe as a function of aperture and focal length). What did you use?

    Can the Bahtinov mask go over the end of your lens hood, or does it need to be next to the glass?

  • @ThePinoyAggie
    @ThePinoyAggie 3 года назад

    I already have their magnetic ND filters. This would be a great addition to Milky Way photography. For DSO, the Red Cat already came with built-in Bahtinov Mask.

    If you were to use step up or a prolonged filter train on your lens, be aware of vignetting.
    I used a cpl with several nd filters and have captured water at a wide focal lenght, and noticed the filters were causing it. I had to then adjust the focus to a higher focal lenght to remove the vignettes.

    Great video. I'd be curious to know how these compare to the traditional solid slotted Bahtinov masks available for cheap. I got one of those awhile ago and tried it out on the Mars/Pleiades conjunction. Still found it difficult to focus mainly because of the difficulty in seeing the spikes. Wondering if these clear etched designs work better.

    In lonely speck website Ian mentioned that at 15 mm 2.8 it should work. Is it not true for kase... is the difference due to how sharp star 2 is been created vs kase filter? Really curious... because i prefer to go circular filter way and sharp star 2 does not have circular filters.

    Thanks for the video. I HAVE A QUESTION THOUGH:
    My Sony lens thread size is 67mm. If I buy a 77mm step up ring and attach 77m bahtinov mask, will I get perfect focus or will the step-up ring render the bahtinov focusing useless?

    What is the thickness of the Kase 100 x 100 mm mask?

  • @andrewleno591
    @andrewleno591 3 года назад

    @Peter, thank you for this tutorial. But is that is really so necessary? I thought it's enough to put lenses/camera in manual set focus to infinity and that's all.

    • @jefferycampbell2243
      @jefferycampbell2243 3 года назад +1

      The infinity mark on many (most?) lenses are not marked accurately enough for good star focus. Also, focus will shift slightly as the lens expands/contracts with temperature change during your shoot.

    • @andrewleno591
      @andrewleno591 3 года назад

      @@jefferycampbell2243 thanks for reply. But in general I assume for wide optics like Rokinon 10mm F2.8 it should still fine with manual infinity. Exposure would be 120sec+ with Pentax k-70 + GPS unit(Astrotracer).
      But then for zooms like for example Tamron 18-250mm F.6.3 I will need this focusing filter. Did I catch it right?

    Thank you for this video. It certainly helped me choose the right Bahtinov mask. It will be the one that's attached to the Williams Optic Red Cat 51. More expensive than the Kase ones, but WO throws in a telescope! :-)

  • @alandyer910
    @alandyer910 3 года назад +4

    I agree. Nicely done. The Lonely Speck unit and a similar mask from David Lane Astrophotography work great on longer lenses, but like the KASE unit you tested, don’t work at all on wide lenses, the very lenses people have the most difficulty focusing accurately. A focusing aid that does work on wide lenses is little known in North America, a diffraction grating device made in Europe from focusonstars.com . It’s a similar over-the-lens 100mm square filter but produces spectra off bright stars and that you can see and use to focus wide lenses, and in Live View as long as your camera has a decent Live View image. I have a unit for testing. Clear skies!

    No one ever talks about the distance of the mask from the front element having a mask 100mm or 4" from the front element makes all the difference to the size of the diffraction spikes
