Average is 2nd to Above average and barely any better than below average. Mediocrity is often used to describe a boring, dullness. And bland is used to describe something with no flavor or color, so these words become more and more negative as time goes on interpretation-wise.
It may have something to do with how the majority of people describe themselves as above average. If the average is being above average, then average becomes below average. At least in our minds.
That has nothing to do with mid. Average doesn't have to mean the same. Two people can be average at soccer while one is better at shooting and the other is better at goalie. Average and same are not synonyms by any means. The problem is all the comments on being "special", from parents and family originally, but now prevalent throughout the internet and even affecting the way we teach students meanwhile. God finally someone with an audience actually says it and really well too. Like "Mid" is literally just "Middle" not the top, not the bottom, like it's okay, not bad, but not good
´´okay, not bad, not good´´ is actually a bad thing in many contexts. Thats the point. Who would go to a restaurant if that´s how their food is described?
I remember when the first Venom movie came out people started talking about how being mid is okay and not every movie has to be the best thing ever, cause we become spoiled and take the good stuff for granted. Bad and mid exist to remind us how good the good stuff actually is.
@mattmaas5790 What your describing is contentedness. To be spoiled, there has to be stuff less desirable than whatever has spoiled you. If we’re operating in a Utopia where everything is perfect, we’re simply happy, not spoiled.
@@MrWizardGG I think there's a critical difference between “being” spoiled, and “getting” spoiled from time to time. Being spoiled warps your perception of the world, great things start to become normal and normal things become bad. You stop appreciating the small things, in favor of always wanting the next big hit
@@darkmetal2412 A lot of people myself enjoyed it. We didn't think it was amazing and that was fine, we still had fun with what many of us perceive as an okay movie. Sometimes okay is good enough.
Maybe in their head, 1 is like “comically bad, possibly so bad it’s amusing”, and that makes 5 “just boring”. So mid = 5 = just boring Which isn’t something I agree with, as I’d say the scale works best as a measure of net enjoyment. A cheesy schlock film that failed its way into being entertaining is a 7, and so is a film that is genuinely well put together and recommendable, though likely not ground breaking or anything. Mid or 5 to me is like not commonly recommendable, since other things have done its premise better, but like nothing compromises it in any critical way. If you so much as like the protagonist’s outfit or have some other extraneous interest in checking it out, then yeah sure; oughta be a good time.
Saying something was "Okay" or "alright" is the same thing as saying something was "mid". Its not negitive, its exactly what you think it means. Nothing special, not bad, not good.
Charlie's videos are the definition of "mid." Jump cut editing, mid. Same background, no green screen, mid No script, just talking, mid. Covering topical game/media/social topics, mid. Mid would be somewhere between 5/10 - 6.5/10 rating. That's not BAD by any means. It just means "There are plenty of way better games out there, but there's still enjoyment to be had with this game none the less." I swear, it's like now a days if people hear that a game is lower than an 8/10 score, it's automatically trash. This generation is so cooked it hurts.
To quote a comment I saw 2 seconds ago: "Mid is good when the people behind it genuinely put effort into making it and it just wasn't sensational. Thats ok. But when a company purposely puts fewer resources and little effort to make something mediocre when they both have the financial and technical capacity to make it better, and they just didn't to maximize profits, that's not ok."
While it's prevalent to lean towards polarized opinions in our society today, average is not a negative. Neutral opinions and enjoying something moderately should be more accepted.
So basically it sounds like there are a few potential options. 1. People are scared to give their opinion on things so they just go with the majority opinion. 2. People secretly like something but feel like they need to hate it in order to avoid being outcast from their friend group. 3. People just go with the opinion that their favourite content creators have and have no personality of their own. 4. People just simply hate something because they don’t like anything popular and are possibly spiteful that the thing that they like is not as popular as the thing everyone else likes.
5. People that just simply love or hate based on their radical political reason for example: - people that hate Ghost of Yotei eventhough the game hasnt even came out just because the main character is female - people that hate Wukong saying its “Chinesse propaganda” - people that hate Space Marine 2 just because it appeal to “male fantasy” - people that love concord simply because the creator have the same political belief as them - people that hate Hogwarts Legacy just because J.K. Rowling made 1 controversial tweet
@@TheKnightCrafter123 That’s also a valid option that’s very likely to be the case most of the time especially when it comes to games like Hogwarts legacy and Space marines 2. Because people will even resort to hating on the players of certain games for literally no reason other than the fact that they bought the game.
@@oOSonicexeOoi almost forgot about Hogwarts Legacy 😂 so ill add that to my list. i played it and its…mid imo. the combat is great but when almost all enemies and bosses are either human or goblin, it became boring after a while. which is a shame since in the movies, Hogwarts have a lot of mystical creatures like Centaurs, Dementors, Griffins, and weird creature you see in the fantastic beast movies. yes theres like 2 other boss that isnt human or goblin but come on man.
@@TheKnightCrafter123 As a veteran sonic fan I’m used to mid 😂 and I actually enjoyed Hogwarts legacy but I did have some annoying visual bugs at times. Which for a casual gamer or less experienced gamer that would probably make them think the game was trash. Even though the game overall was good. Sonic frontiers is a good example of a mid (average) game or even the mafia games are pretty mid (average) at times because they have a lot of good things about them but once your done with them you don’t really feel a need to continue playing them anymore and might even get bored after an hour or so. Even gta online and c.o.d are pretty much mid games now to an extent because of certain players bringing down the enjoyment factor of the game by either being toxic or just being annoying in general. Btw I’m not saying gta and cod are bad im just saying that they are good when you don’t have to deal with problematic players before someone sees this and assumes I’m hating on things lol
I made this exact rant in a Moist Critical video comment months ago and people mocked and ignored it. Now that Charlie's said it y'all suddenly agree. Y'all are mid.
I always attributed the phrase "boring is worse than awful." Because if something is god-awful, I can at least have fun mocking it. But if something is just incredibly mundane, then what is there to say about it? It's not fun to talk about, and it's not fun to engage in; it's just dull and not worth the effort of bringing it up.
I hate how practically everything has to be one extreme or another with no chance to even choose a third option. It's like the entire world is being secretly ruled by Harvey Dent!
It's because everyone only wants and expects the top 1%, and that's in everything; attraction, intelligence, a game, a movie, a book, a person in general. Everything has to be something, and if it doesn't have "aura" or is "peak," it's "mid," which I've seen is now used as bad which makes even less sense and just makes everything worse. Most people who call others (and other things) mid are projecting heavily, it's just sad.
The combativeness is real. I know my big issue with being combative is that it always feels like everyone else gets to call what I like "bad", but if I do the same I'm being unfair, so it's totally poisoned my ability to communicate some times. And it feels even more unfair to be told that I'm supposed to just be bigger than it, too, when it's so prevalent. But I'm sure everyone probably feels that way. As far as "mid" being supposedly worse than bad, I think somewhere along the way we either collectively decided or allowed ourselves to be convinced that commodities deserved our attention. Like, if someone tells us that we should or shouldn't do something, for some reason we feel compelled to believe that. And we don't really like that or agree with it, but there is this overwhelming push to do it anyway. So when we can convince ourselves that something is bad, we get to trash it and by doing that take back some of the control we lost to this idea that we *must* participate in the consumption. But like you pointed out, someone will find a way to defend even the "bad" things. It seems like the only objective, totally defensible way to trash something is when it isn't memorable. So when it's just plain old average. I think that weird dynamic is what really powers it. We're compelled to participate in consuming and we don't really like that, and trashing things is a form a of protest against a force we don't have a name or face for. Anyway that was my rant on your rant. Thanks for reading.
The good thing about Mid's is that there are always some people that gives them a 10/10, so it's worth giving it a chance because you might be one of those people.
I think the mid used today came from people talking about mid weed. For decades people have been talking about “mid weed” or “mids”. With how much super potent and specially grown weed there is now a days mid weed is seen as bad and would be made fun of by some. This could be why the word mid is seen and used how it is
I feel like this did actually happened and I cannot shake the thought of you pull out of your phone after taking a good piss and then you just get notified by this vid lmao
Etymology Nerd did a good video explaining how mid doesn’t mean “middle”, but how it’s taken a meaning of below average (because language changes). So when something is called mid, it is called below average, and I think this is why mid is a different insult, because it is below average.
same can be said about music... its like how people call literally every popular artist "mid" and proceed to be listening to underground indie rock or smth. i used to be exactly like this
The crazy thing about the internet is now you’re going to see a bunch of people saying “you’re using the word wrong” or “who says mid anymore” because Charlie said so, not out of their own thought of mind but just because Charlie said so
It's not an internet thing, it's a human thing, a lot of people don't like decision making, so they let other people decide for them, what to think, what to wear, who to follow etc. That's how trends work and that's why you'll see random witch hunts happen against people, because somebody said something and nobody actually bothered to think whether or not it's a good idea. This is just more evidently pointed out in social media where everything is in the public view 24/7
I think people call something mid because it's overhyped. I've only ever called something mid when others around me think it's way better. But then again, i don't use that word often.
I think the main issue is that mid has become synonymous with boring, and there is nothing more excruciating and mind numbing than being bored, thus mid has become the worst rating one can receive
People treat "mid" like it is something atrociously bad, which is not. People nowdays feel like if they don't love something they feel guilty, so they go the opposite direction and convice themselves that they actually hated it, there's no in between. It's the polarization effect which has been increasing more and more over the years.
The term "mid," which originally just meant "average" or "mediocre," has somehow morphed into something much more negative in these discussions. People use "mid" as if it's synonymous with "terrible," but in reality, something being "mid" isn't bad at all. It's just not exceptional, and that should be okay.
There are lots of messed up mindsets. Take for example, the nice guy. Lots of people look upon said people as cringe and creepy. To me that shows that emotions are being suppressed, because if people look upon nice as something along those lines, it is kind of like a demon looking into heavens light, where it is so powerful to them that they see it as something bad. Crazy stuff🫥
Yeah I agree with this. Calling something "mid" as opposed to "decent" has a different nuance to it. When people talk about something being average, it's divided between "not as bad as I expected" or "not as good as I expected"

There is nothing bad whatsoever about being spoiled, that's the optimal market we could consume from.
Wait what I thought we all agree the movie was fantastic? Lol

@@MrWizardGG I think there's a critical difference between “being” spoiled, and “getting” spoiled from time to time. mid literally means 5/10 but people treat it like its 1/10
Maybe in their head, 1 is like “comically bad, possibly so bad it’s amusing”, and that makes 5 “just boring”.
So mid = 5 = just boring
Which isn’t something I agree with, as I’d say the scale works best as a measure of net enjoyment.

Fr
Well yes but also arggg, yo ho (other pirate noises)
how you describe something painfully average is how I usually use the word mid.
💯💯💯
5. People that just simply love or hate based on their radical political reason
for example:
- people that hate Ghost of Yotei eventhough the game hasnt even came out just because the main character is female
- people that hate Wukong saying its “Chinesse propaganda”
- people that hate Space Marine 2 just because it appeal to “male fantasy”
- people that love concord simply because the creator have the same political belief as them
- people that hate Hogwarts Legacy just because J.K.

Your comment was stolen by a bot

This is one of those takes that deserves way more likes but won't because it rubs people the wrong way when they get called out.
We caught you, annoying lil huh midcaller
I think the main issue is that mid has become synonymous with boring, and there is nothing more excruciating and mind numbing than being bored, thus mid has become the worst rating one can receive
i think this consensus is coming from this.
being mid is being forgettable.
being good or bad is unforgettable.
Yeah, people only cares about hero/villain,
nobody gives a damn about side character.
Mid situation is wild
Whose problem is that? Not mine
If something is literally one of the best things ever and then the sequel is mid. That's a huge loss.
