  • On 21 June 2024 I ticked off one of my longest standing 'bucket list' items - to do a freefall parachute jump. Strapped to my instructor Callum and filmed by the excellent Nick Herridge I took part in a 13,000ft skydive at Beccles Airfield in Suffolk. I am really lucky that UK Parachuting operates there as it's just a few miles from home and the skydive takes places in full view of my home town of Lowestoft. Video features an edit of the raw footage from the experience with a couple of shots of the plane taking off filmed by my wife (who was more nervous about it than I was!). I hope you enjoy watching this as much as I enjoyed throwing myself out of that plane!

LOL - it didn't feel like floating though...strange feeling - but travelling at 125mph straight down for 35 seconds just felt like being in a wind tunnel but with better views 🙂

Wonderful jump David. I got to ask you. Would it rate next to some of the best coasters you have ever ridden? You are adventurous in every sense of the word Dave. Well done~

It's hard to compare to any roller coaster ride experience to be honest...very different feeling. What I can say is that this really got my adrenaline flowing and I was on a real buzz afterwards...I can't recall the last roller coaster that gave me the same buzz, apart from the no brakes alpine coaster at Mieders. This has been on my to-do list ever since I did static line jumping around 30 years ago, and I am sure I will do another...it can be addictive, adrenaline!

Do parachute plane pilots get lonely on the way down?

Probably not - it's only a few minutes after all.
What I found funny was when they did the safety drill before we went up - they explained what the process was if the plane had an emergency (which has never happened)...anyway, he explained that if we were at low altitude we would adopt the brace position, however if we were high enough we would simply "bail out using the parachutes and leave the pilot to figure it out himself" - I thought that was funny!
