Byron Scott was the leading scorer for the 87-88 Back to back Championship team 21.7ppg Byron was an awesome shooting guard, great player!!!!!
Who was better Scott or Nixon?
Byron was more athletic and explosive he had bunnys I think Norm was a better shooter passer and slightly better on defense
Norm was a better playmaker(more of a pg) ,midrange scorer off the dribble but Scott had more bounce going to the basket above the rim finisher &deeper shooting range and stronger on defense eventho norm had quicker hands.
@@Andre-cl2qt Scott was definitely a better fit. With Nixon, it took the ball out of Magic’s hands and Jerry West knew that
@Edd1e8
Well Magic won 2 Finals with Norm Nixon.
Shooter, defender, was actually a VERY good finisher in transition!
I was a Celtic fan. Byron Scott was definitely someone to worry about.
All five of that starting team were hard to contend with. That is why they dominated a weak Western Conference during the 80's. If one had a bad night the other 4 just stepped up. A couple of the Celtics/ Lakers Championship Series is Boston was beat up by playing in the Eastern Conference Playoffs. They were wore out when the Series started.
As a Celtics fan
Do you see similarities with him and Andrew Toney?
@@katastrafika5253 - Andrew "The Boston Strangler" Toney?
Yes.
@@kurtsherrick2066 I was a die hard Lakers fan in the 80's. The only times the Lakers loss is when the opponents had a decent center. 81,83,84,86,89. You are right, they fastbreaked weak teams to death.
@@katastrafika5253 hadn't thought about it but absolutely YES. Andrew Toney scared me. also was jealous. how come the Sixers added THIS guy when we added Gerald Henderson ...huh. Toney should have had a statistical career cause he sure made me think now we (the Celts) likely won't beat the Sixers .... and Byron was similar in that where did this guy come from... I mean to add a guy that good and how did the Lakers add him... they should have had to lose a SIGNIFICANT player to get this guy cause he sure didn't play like a rookie so that wasn't it even if Byron looked real young in that 1st Laker yr. he had major hops, speed and he could seriously shoot from outside ... he truly fit that Lakers Showtime team perfectly
Excellent player Byron had some hops, too! The man was perfect fit on those Laker teams.
Yes, there was a time when every season B. Scott came back from the offseason jumping higher than the previous season. I always wanted to see what his workout was. B. Scott always brought his A game.
In the two point era you take Kareem, in the 3 point era you take a guard.
Byron Scott was much more than just a jumpshooter although he did have textbook form and was fun to watch shoot the ball. I can remember tons of times he caught passes from Magic on fast breaks and him slamming it with one hand. He also was a really solid defender. He was a big part of those great Laker teams.
Not a big Byron fan, but I believe his and Cooper's number should be in the rafters.
@@Noname-hc5uw yess indeed! Coop a 5x champ as well
@@Noname-hc5uw Why wouldn't you be a Byron Scott fan?
@@ekibirigeable He did not show-up for the series against the Bulls, Think in one game he went scoreless.
Who's better Scott or Nixon?
Wilt Chamberlain was a monster.
I think he would destroyed guys if he played today just like he did when he played. Hell he would have out bullied Shaq unless Shaq put in the work in the off season that he never did
Yup. Correct answer.
As Oscar Robertson said..."the record books don't lie"...IMHO, Wilt was not only the best basketball player of all time, he was the best athlete I've seen...
And the strongest dude in the NBA. Dude benched 600lbs for reps. Probably of the most athletic too, his mindset was similar to LaChina James. Didn't want the ball much in big game's...
@@jeremyswann2228 Wilt Chamberlain averaged 24.5 rebounds, 22.5 points and 4.2 assists in 160 games in the playoffs in his career. At 47.2 minutes per game with 12 minute quarters.
The old game is far superior than today's game
We have forgotten about Laker Dreadnought Elgin Baylor in this conversation. Before Wilt, they had to score around 50 to win and they did so many times; before Baylor's knees started giving out. You can never forget about both West and Baylor but because they lost so many finals to the Celtics we tend to forget them. I will never forget them.
Elgin thepride of Seattle University Chieftains!
I’m a young fan but I love the legend of Jerry West and genuinely believe he is the most underrated player ever. It’s become a bad thing to make the finals and lose. It’s better to miss the finals completely now according to the media:/
Elgin Baylor himself says Wilt was the greatest ever. Wilt was just so gifted athletically he did things no one else did.
Me neither
Still the greatest mid sized combo over a real stretch of time. Both truly great all around stars.
I know LeBron and Wade were killers too. But they weren't together that long.
magic and bird probably the two greatest impact players to enter the league .
Absolutely they saved the cocaine League
Great video
Scott underrated
Scott was a solid player.
The best BIG 3 in history, Kareem, Worthy and Magic!
Kareem >>>>Parish
Bird/McHale >>
Magic/Worthy
The game has really changed from the 70s when I started following the NBA. I can remember when the NBA did not have the 3 point shot, and the only way you could score 3 points was to get fouled in the act of shooting after a made basket. Kareem was so dominant in the 70s, that is when Big Man were featured. But now the NBA is mostly a guard dominated league because the 3-point shot is such a part of the game now. Back in the 70s, you could handcheck guards which made it difficult for guards to score unless they were coming off of a screens, or if they were able to beat their man off the dribble. I think Steph Curry would have had a harder time scoring the way he does if he was constantly handchecked and the Refs allowed a little bit more physical play. Steph would still find a way to score, but it would be more of coming off of screens, rather than just bringing the ball down the court and shooting like he does now.
Luv you Byron 💓 I was not good till early 30. Kareem ! Then Magic Then Kobe (very under rated) along with the shorter guy from Miami love him. As a kid Bird was underrated ! Shawn W In Akron Ohio
LMAO Bird was not underrated
Bryon Scott should be the next Lakers coach
As a longtime Lakers fan Byron Scott was solid 🏀
I watched Byron Scott for many years. My favorite memory him is however this one time there was an interview with him after the game on channel 9 in LA and he said "We be playing good and ****" - and they didn't bleep it. It aired.
To me magic is the best laker of all time. He can play all 5 positions and do anything! Maximum flexibility and versatility!
Also had over 5000 intercourse assist! 😆
magic couldnt guard NOBODY and he couldnt shoot magic is way over rated he was fortunate to be on a team of five + hall of famers

@@daddy4739 lolol wow! oh myyyyyyyyyy
@@garyaustin4733 and why are people even discussing him as a goat!? greater than jery west, wilt, elgin! even in modern times he was nowhere close to kobe in talent. he couldnt defend and didnt even try. i wish people would stop talking about him so much.
Magic...most versatile..and won a title in his rookie season...greatest leader too
I am a Spurs fan, and Magic was the one to worry about coming to play in San Antonio, and to enjoy his game.
He always showed respect to the Spurs from Iceman Gervin to David Robinson.
Magic was the Lakers team engine.
If the NBA pushed back the 3point line, it would be much better!
I think the NBA should raise the rim by 6" to 12". I don't think you can push the 3-point line back because you'd have to widen the court and maybe remove a row of seats. 3-pointers and dunks should be special plays, not routine and ordinary.
Byron was a great shooter. He has a high basketball lQ. The 3 players he named are 3 of the greatest Lakers, but you have include Elgin Baylor and of course Wilton Norman Chamberlain in the conversation.
Those laker teams were crazy superteams. Kareem, magic, worthy, Cooper, Scott, sheesh
Scott was also on of the great finishers at the 2. On a 3on1 or 3on2 fast break with Scott and Worthy on the wings with Magic in the middle, it was pick your ☠️
Kareem, you have your place in NBA history, so far, the leading scorer, the inventor of the sky hook, reserve, yet very effective. You are one of the greatest players in NBA history.
Every great player has his place, and will never be forgotten. God bless you, as well as them.
@Julie E. Hewitt Exactly 💯
If i'm not wrong the inventor of sky hook was George Mikan, even so Kareem is the goat for me.

To me the greatest laker of all time is Magic Johnson think about it he’s 6,9 it’s showtime 💛💜
Worthy 6'9 very fast player who moved like a shooting guard.
If you shot more than three 3s back then, the coach would pull you cuz you didn't work for a higher percentage shot. Like Magic, Elgin Baylor could also play every position on the team well, though, as Center, he might be a bit height-challenged defensively - but he could rebound with the best b/c of position and timing. I don't think you could leave Elgin out of this conversation. I couldn't choose among the 4 of them. Elgin could create, shoot, pass, and score with the best of them - and he would be great today. Kareem Center, Elgin and Rudy at Forward, Magic at point, Kobe at SG, and Jerry West as 6th man, cuz he played both guard roles well. Most people think of Rudy as just a banger - but when he left Jerry and Elgin for SF, he proved that he could score a lot, too. Worthy with Jerry coming off the bench.
Yup, and threes were lower percentage shots back when players were actually allowed to defend them
Who's Rudy?
If you never saw Kareem, Magic, Jordan, Duncan or Bird play, your opinion on the Jordan/LeBron debate is completely irrelevant because you missed seeing everybody.
Amen. And don’t forget Doc, pistol, west, Kareem, west, Isaiah, Barkley, Akeem, Clyde, and the list goes on. So many greats. Miss that era.

Byron Scott never got enough credit for how he made the difference for the Lakers in game 6 of the 1984 Finals!!
Easy answer. Wilt Chamberlain.
NO, bec the question is greatest Laker not basketball player. That could only be Kobe or Magic who played their entire careers there.
@@chrisi6776Remember when Wilt played with FOUR STUDENTS vs magic byron AC worthy and bernard king and they didn't score a point .... none. No points. That was funny. RIP Wilt The Goat

I could name few players in even good team (Lakers, Pistons, 76ers, Milwaukee, Seattle and other that I forgot )that their goals were to stop these great players from scoring.
I've seen him in the 90s on an away game in Germany, he got moves you can't teach to nobody.

Jerry West. Hands down as greatest Laker. Not just because of his play but after the game. Only player to ever win Finals MVP on the losing team.
Hell no Kobe was way better.

Magic didn't beat the 76ers with a one man show, Jamaal Wilkes had 37 points.

WILT
He also came up with "three peat" if I remember correctly.
The problem with big men in the last 20-30 years (it's been a GROWING issue, not a sudden one) is that too many NBA stars come up through AAU which DOES NOT TEACH POST PLAY.
You don't HAVE the great high-efficiency post players to argue with the better 3 point shooters for "points per possession" any more.
Add to that the serious HANDICAPS that have been made to playing serious DEFENSE in today's game, and there just aren't any traditional big men left - and haven't been MANY of them in the last 20 years (Tim Duncan was most of the entire LIST there, with Shaq early on in that period only, and arguably the Gasol brothers).
3-4 three pointers were normal for a shooter back then.
Wow! Surprised that no one mentioned, 11 time champion Bill Russell! He only brought out the best of everyone around him but if you needed him to get you 30 rebounds…he did! If you needed him to score 30…he did! If you needed him to block shots…he did! If you needed him to shut down the other big man and still do it all…he did! Finally, he and his teams won and won often. He was without a doubt, a winner who always brought his “A” game and as a great leader made those around him winners as well! I have not seen then or today anyone who could match his intensity and will every night. Not Wilt, not Kareem, not anyone! One other player who never gets mentioned when they talk about all time greats and that’s Connie Hawkins. So many outside influences but when on the court was no doubt one of the great players of all time! If you ever have an opportunity to see any of his game films, you will definitely come away with a different outlook on this force!
russell didnt play for the lakers...
What about Jerry and Elgin? Byron speaks powerfully about the late 70s and beyond.
I missed who he said was the #1 player.... ????
He did say, if age 22, of the 3 players offered, Kareem, Magic, Kobe... he'd take Kareem. Then Dan Patrick asked, what about in Today's game and Byron said Magic.
Of all the players mentioned in this video or comments: only one had the rules changed to hinder his game!….you might want to keep that in mind
I just feel That Magic Johnson is the God of the basketball 🏀
What of Elgin, Jerry and Wilt ?
Byron never saw wilt elgin or west play!…too bad for him!
Russell for his rings and his class.

If Byron Scott wasn't on the Lakers he'd be John Starks.

It's not your world anymore this is a whole new different world you can tell it like it was but the young players can tell it like it is whether you like it or not Steph Curry put a stamp on it Byron Scott 💪💛💙🏀🏆😎👅
The NBA was more exciting back then because of the unpredictability of each team. Now it's plain boring since all teams are shooting threes. The centers and power forwards dominated the inside. While the shooting guard and the small forward either shot from the perimeter or take it strong to the basket. And the point guard is a point guard.
I agree about Connie Hawkins, unfortunate what happen to him.Taking nothing away from Russell, but Wilt wS better in every way. Russell the better winner because he had the better team and the better coach plain d simple. You're right in saying what you needed Russell to do even if it were to score he could go out and do it. I'm just stating the facts and the record books Don't lie,MR CHAMBERLAIN HAS SO MANY IT'S UNBELIEVABLE. I DO BELIEVE RUSSELL DOES NOT GET ENOUGH CREDIT FOR HIS GREATNESS.
The Lakers Showtime wow today they would destroy a lot of teams. Magic Johnson 6'9 guard probably the best ever. Kareem Abdul Jabbar who is probably the real GOAT. Who retired how many years ago holding the scoring title. James Worthy, Byron Scott, Michael Cooper, Kurt Rambis, Jamal Wilkes, Michael Thompson
Its the shoes
Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West and Elgin Baylor 🏀🏀🏀
they don't even mention, Wilt, Elgon or Jerry! I don't suggest they would be selected but not even mentioned? Personally, if we talk stats and not championships, probably West.
It was me.

Scott was not only a great player but a great coach, too. Only problem saying Magic is the GOAT is he wasn't super on offense like Kareem was.
Did you say great coach?!😳
@@Jon-oi8kn Yeah, he led the NJ Nets to two finals as a coach during the Jason Kidd era.
Magic & Bird were both about unselfish play and why they won.
And they did everything in all areas.
Modern Centers would be on the bench before the 2nd quarter, if they had to face old school centers. Yes, they'd nail a few 3's, but give up an "And1" on defense everytime down. If you look at today's game, Dominique Wilkins would be a truly dominant Center in today's game & Chris Webber would easily be the absolute best; as would K.G.! Why? No one wants to bump & grind in the paint, and these his would be overwhelmed by old school forwards playing Center today. The modern guard has no shot, since regular season defense isn't allowed until the playoffs & playoff defense is now automatic ejection.
No one talks about tha Machine A.C. Green
80’s Lakers was the greatest Lakers of all time, and it’s more exciting too. Todays NBA lost that excitement, it’s like oh ok he shot three, and oh the other team shot threes. I mean their running up and down shooting threes. No more hard banging bodies like it used to be. I mean it’s more like, two samurai warriors using not samurai swords, but bow and arrows.

Magic is the Goat
Close your eyes when Byron Scott is talking. Sounds just like Barack Obama...lol. Seriously. Intelligent, staccato pace, and the ending lilt.
Magic Johnson is for me. Kobe averaged 5.5 more points but 7 less assists per game than Magic.
Yanis. That's where.
Question was "where are all the big men at"? will lets shoot 30 3 pointers against you taking time running plays feeding it low to a big man to score just two points. Math is in the 3 point corner.
Yeah so what happened last year when Giannis and Brook Lopez dominated the paint to win the title?Do u even watch basketball?
You have to be strong and have a certain skill to be able to play on the block.Question why all these guys are suffering from injuries these days,so many
Math is the foundation for the Law of Averages. The closer you are to the hoop the higher your scoring average plus you get fouls on people. Probability then says that in the 4th quarter after Wilt, Jabbar, or Akeem have fouled out everyone and the game is close then their 3-point shooters could do some damage as well. Rare is the game where 3-point shooters are hot for 4 quarters.
Bird was is and and always will be the greatest player of all time. The league is full of Kobe's ,magics , LBJ's never been another Bird.

Once again, these biased and ill informed ex-NBA players are clueless about the significant history of their respective franchise. Byron fails to mention, overlook, and disrespect the historical legends before he played. It baffles many that these individuals fail to answer the question about the greatest Lakers ever. Jerry West (the NBA logo), Wilt Chamberlain( responsible for the NBA record of 33 wins in a row), Elgin Baylor, Gail Goodrich, and Shaquille O’Neal. Of course this is a debatable question and conclusion. These modern day individuals are deficient in their knowledge about any history. Byron is a good person and offers an opinion.
