    Remember, this is just stuff I wish I knew earlier. Not a "6 things you don't know" video. I got a few annoyed comments on my last one, that's why I am making it clear here. : )
    -
    About the Number 1. The Peasants - It's not 50% less, it turned out to be more like 33% less. And yes, they cost 3 times the price of Limitarni, I still stand by my point that Limitarni are the better option, as Public Order will be more important than money.
    Money is easy to get, whereas public order a difficult to control. (Except in the first few turns, peasants may be the option)

    As a person who is new to total war, walls are indeed very valuable in Barbarian Invasion. Recently, played as the Vandals, I had recently settled in Iberia from the Romans, and then the some tribe-cannot remember which one-sieged one of my settlements. I had a very weak army in that city, and that the balance thingy was totally not in my favor, but the walls totally saved me. I had set my infantry on the walls and destroyed their infantry. As a result, I had won the siege and gave me time to recruit a stronger force. Walls are friends

    Something I wish I knew about BI is that unlike in vanilla Rome TW, academies and walls boost law/public order! Which is incredibly helpful when you're trying to juggle what you need--especially since boosting law also reduces corruption and can boost income (which I also only recently learned).

    Don't keep Spurius Flavius in Aquincum. Send him into Greece immediately while you are still allied with eastern Rome. Converting eastern Romes pagan provinces will cause them to rebel after a few turns.
    Normally they would start attacking you by turn 10, but with Greece rebelling they will have to deal with the rebels first.
    Also keep your military buildings in Rome, it has a fully upgraded archer range and blacksmith making archers trained in Rome almost twice as strong compared to base units.

    One thing that I kept repeating back in the day is the difference of attacking with missiles on the side that the unit does not have the shield, to bypass it. If you missile attack from that flank, it causes far greater damage than from the front or flank with shield.

  • @timothyernst8812
    @timothyernst8812 4 года назад +16

    Check your unit export file for unit statistics and attributes. Anything in BI labeled "is_peasant" does not give full public order when garrisoned. Several units including herdsmen for example are marked is_peasant in addition to the normal peasant unit. I've had limitanei route before even making contact with the enemy, so I don't have any experience with them holding a line for an extended period, but I agree they aren't meant to be an offensive unit. They're a fodder unit meant to die in place of more expensive troops.
    If you're coming to BI after playing vanilla, keep in mind there's a huge amount of unit rebalancing. In vanilla, Rome is meant to be dominant. Most of their troops besides having high attack and defense stats also usually have good morale and good stamina. In BI, Rome isn't ridiculously OP anymore. Comies have decent enough stats, but they only have average morale and stamina. They will break much more quickly than what you may be used to for Roman troops, and they're quite a bit more expensive than the Marian units from vanilla.

    • @andreasteucke3090
      @andreasteucke3090 4 года назад +5

      about the limitanei routing. Maybe you were using the wrong Commander. There is one that looks good with 5 stars, but he has every negative morale malus there is (-9 morale in combat if I remember correctly).

      @@andreasteucke3090 Possibly. But given that this happened to me with campaigns as both the WRE and ERE on multiple fronts with several different generals and captains rather than just Gratianus, it's more likely that limitaei suck and shouldn't be used for anything tactical other than pushing rams and chump blocking.

    About peasants and the Public order! The real difference is even more drastic! It is actually 125% increasing if we go from peasants to Limitanei, respectivley 55% decreasing if we go the other way around. The reason is simple. The Public order system in Rome/Barbarian Invasion is not affected by the raw number of units(as in the new games), but rather by the real number of soldiers, garrisoned. So lets say for example, 1 unit of peasants which is 240 men, gives you 10% PO, while 1 unit of Limitanei being 160 gives you 15% PO. If we evaluate we will get that for the same number of men - 480 peasants increase PO with 20%, while 480 Limitanei increase it with 45%(even though 480 Limitanei are 3 units, while 480 peasants are only 2 units.) And that difference is crucial if we want to recruit troops for garisson services form a settlement with scarse population. Population is the most important resource in the old TW games, not the money, and that's why they are fascinating.

    the problem with crossbow units in barbarian invasion is that they cannot fire over the head of units. I don't know if anyone has the same problem, when I place them behind my spearmen they get 4,5 kills and when I put them in front and withdrawl them after the enemy gets close, they get tens of kills

  • @andreakermark290
    @andreakermark290 2 года назад +2

    I would like to add some things: Foundries are the best building for your military units. both autobattle and while doing personal battles the added armor keeps your morale much sturdier. a stack of silver quality equipped comitatenses can wipe an entire horde faction on auto battle.
    secondly: the farms are generally a faustian bargain. sure they add income for now, but they cost you 5% public order per level. it is better to have higher taxes and lower farming output than to have lower taxes and higher farming yields. Think about why Carthage and Alexandria are public order messes... its their farming output that grows their population into the skies. not only does each farming level give 5% of squalor, the increased population will make your garrison public order bonus count for less.
    In a playthrough: a full stack of peasants in a city costs minimally to upkeep, but at long as your total public growth is lesser than 10% in total, then they willyield 30% public order. one you go higher they quickly fall down to 10%. that is where they start being rebellious shits. the counter could as he says be to use Limitanei, but the limitanei has a wildly higher upkeep, making your public order cost massive ammounts of money.
    through this you can calculate the public order for all settlements, and decide wether to build a farm or not. Decide which your capital would be.
    if your goal is to paint the entire map, Salona is the optimal capital. If you are recreating the roman borders, Rome is the best capital. if you are reviving the WRE, Massilia is the best, for ERE cyprus is the best.
    Enjoy your perpetually stable cities.

      @@MelkorGG ok cool so it still sort of works for each city. Thank you. And Yeah Im amazed that they even were able to put Barbarian Invasion and Rome 1 on mobile. They did a fantastic job. It's the closest thing to medieval II on mobile we will get.
      Although if they were able to fit all that into a pretty easy to use interface then I would not be surprised if medieval II was released on mobile phones in the future. Can you imagine?
      Random But I am 31 and started Gaming On PC about 7 years back. But I was really only into a few games. Skyrim and MechWarrior Online. And I didn't ever really pay attention to the total war franchise ever. So one day when I saw one of your videos and pixelated appolos I was blown away. This was probably 2 years ago.
      So... Like anyone I looked to see which one I should buy first.
      Did my research and At the time I believe that Three kingdoms was about to come out or maybe thrones of Britannia or something.
      I'm not into Warhammer since I don't follow the Lore. I am into Elder scrolls tho
      Anyways I researched and came to the conclusion that I should start off with an older title and work my way up.
      So I got medieval II definitive edition super cheap. Since My PC RIG isn't insanely High tech It was an easy choice.
      (I run a HP pavilion Tower with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 crammed inside paired with a AMD Ryzen 5 Vega Processor. So it's the perfect little gaming PC for someone like me)
      After I got medieval II and put thousands of hours into it I found out about the Third age divide and conquer...(I played only that for months until I found Elder scrolls total war...and love it just as much) after the fresh feeling from.those simplistic yet somehow beautiful Graphics and It's asthetic wore off I bought another title.
      This time I wanted a gunpowder total war game and the modding community and mods are always Something I have hugely in mind when looking.
      My options of course were slim.
      Empire. Napoleon or or.. I'm glad I looked. Or Fall of samurai Shogun II.
      It was the hardest decision to make but ultimately I went with shogun II fall.of. samurai.
      Was terrified once I played the vanilla Version the.first hour because I thought I made a mistake from.the sad pathetic amount of units per faction. This is important to me as I'm a huge custom battles Machinima Maker fan.
      But luckily I went on.the.mod store and downloaded a bunch of mods that added hundreds of new units to the game. Amazing amazing game.
      So after that got stale I purchased my most recent total war game. And the choice was hard.
      I had bought Warhammer 2 and immediately asked for a refund after ten mins. Hated the interface and the alien like Battle Mechanics and options. Not for me.
      So I had thrones and Attila in mind. Which one... I saw Atilla had The Rise of Mordor mod and The medieval Kingdoms 1212 among many more. So I got that instead.
      I haven't even played Atilla yet and Have over 1200 hours in the game just with rise of Mordor and Medieval Kingdoms 1212.
      Beautiful Amazing. The options of units and factions for 1212 AD made me gitty.
      Rise of Mordor can have alot of factions if you download the right mods but now they just added an easy All in one installer that boots all the current mods made by their team into it. Fun.
      So that's where I'm at now. Next I'll probably go for empire or Napoleon. I don't know which one tho

    4:00 thats a bad idea , you are most likely having a rebillion sooner or later and what i do is destroying everything in avaricum (that city nearly always revolts) , making the taxes there high and everywhere else low so only 1 city revolts in the first 2-3 turns ,which can only produce peasants and now you can destroy and massacre a rebell peasant faction which brings you like 14.000 denarii ++
    call it controlled destruction in most games i only have 1 rebellion in turn 2-3
    oh and pro tipp as western rome make the heir Pagan and kill the emperor as fast as possible
    and put your capitol round arles , this shortens the distance to capitol (so bonus loyalty )and this also doubles your income because thats how corruption works in RTW
    if you have christians left f*****K conversion send them to the alemanni in one huge stack and never attack the alemanns so no horde emerges , its just to annoy them
    (the 2 christians in the broder cities are usally cool and can stay where they are and islands dont have religious influence from neighboring territories so all eastern romans should have a pagan warrior bonus island )
    another pro tipp if you pay the other half of the empire (doesnt matter which one as long you are roman) 200 denarii for 20 turns right in the beginning of the game they will not attack you for quite some time , have a diplomat which lives there to remake this deal every 2 turns or so and you dont have to worry about the other emperor for at least 40-50 turns
    and on a final note normal stone walls with 12 cheap archers 2 comitatenses 6 limitatei can kill an entire 5 army horde if placed correctly , just the 12 cheap archers alone can cause up to 3.500 casualties for a horde army

    What the... ports do absolutely nothing when you build them first, you build them later when you have high population and many sea settlements, the main reason why people build farms at first, is because they increase population growth, not because of the money, and ports are only good at the start in BI, because you already have loads of settlements with high population.
    And what the hell was that mess about the units at the end? Limitanei have high defense, yes, but they have one of the lowest morale of any unit in the game and are infamus in the rome total war community for letting you down every single time you use them in battle, they break the moment they get too overwhelmed or even just when fighting in general. And comitatenses have extremely high defense and have the highest armour of any infantry unit in the game, together with the auxilia palatina and the plumbatarii, not counting the first cohort unit, and way higher than limitanei.
    In BI the system works exactly like it works in vanilla rtw and it certainly is not a rock, paper, scissors system, there are many different units that are effective or weak against many different other units and some are even situational.
    I'm sorry, but that was plain wrong information at the end there.

    • @MelkorGG
      @MelkorGG  4 года назад +5

      The Rock Paper Sccisor system is present, Spears do have an advantage vs Cav and so on.
      What I was getting at is there is more cases for units been more focussed.
      I was wrong when I said Comitatenses have low defence, I meant to say keep them safe as they are not the ones you want to lose. (As in, they are certainly NOT cannon fodder units)
      Limitanei have high defence and low attack. Giving them a particular focus. No RTW unit has that. The attack -defence stats in RTW are mostly the same.

      @@MelkorGG the main problem of vanilla is fast combat (too fast losing morale, too fast units dying, you cant use defensive button properly for more realistic battles). And here we getting that auxilia palatina (elite spearmen) dying with ease against medium swordsmen.
      Thats why mods with slower combat are so great (EB, RTR, RS, XGM etc...). There spearmen in good position with defending button can hold for long even elite infantry (without doing any real damage, just holding), to let you outflank them.

    • @dariocarcano1379

      The Limitanei are a bad unit in general, but considering that: they can be trained basically in every settlement (while Comitatenses needs Legion Barraks), they have a (limited) missile attack, they have good defence and, in comparison with others militia unit in RTW (Town Watch, Militia Hoplites, ecc.), their morale it's not that bad, Limitanei can be very useful if used wisely. In comparison with the militia units in RTW they are decent, so I don't agree with you.

      @@MelkorGG What about spanish bull warriors (extremely high attack, low defense), or chosen axemen (the same), or any phalanx unit, particulary armoured hoplites (very high defense, lower attack)? These are some examples of stat wise clearly offensive or defensive units in rtw vanilla.
      And when I say a rock, paper, scissors system is not present, is because there is not 1 unit that is effective against 1 other unit, and there is not a circle that closes itself. Yes, some units do have bonuses against other units, actually only spears vs cavalry and javelins vs elephants and chariots, but units that would be weak against other units, like archers, are actually strong against them if they are used correctly. Rome total war has some guidelines that say some units are meant to be used against others, but you can change the system by utilizing tactics.

      You only use them as garrison in settlements that either doesn't need defence, or can get cavalry reinforcements from a nearby settlement in case of a siege.
      That or use them to handle siege equipment when there's missile units on the walls or a tower you absolutely can't avoid.
      You can also buy them to move them to another settlement, then disband them for population and faster development, good in case you're capturing settlements too fast, or if it's an important settlement that could supply others with troops, or if it's in a chokepoinnt.
