    • @gabork5055
      @gabork5055 3 года назад

      @@VVeremoose I wouldn't call it a steamroll as focusing on the Julii early on leaves Gaul vulnerable to all the neighboring factions and it's achievable with a lot of casualties as shown in one of Lugotorix's short campaigns, but sure the AI has a tendency to misuse their units the worst way it possibly could.
      Early roman units like the Hastati and Velites are great at surrounding the enemy units and attack, with both missiles and in the melee from all directions.
      Meanwhile the AI probably makes a frontal attack and probably against a unit that counters these types in the first place.
      But hey, the AI cheats and got full stacks all the time that the faction's economy, had it been controlled by the player couldn't afford, so it barely matters.
      But it's easily possible to take the Julii territories to prevent them taking Mediolanium, with the right amount of unit spam.
      Iirc. the best Gaul has in the early game are the spear armed Warbands and some skirmishers.

    It's quite ironic that Scythia being one of the strongest factions with God tier units is also one of the most passive factions played by AI. They are always preoccupied with being boring and dull unlike everyone around them, including Germania. Even Thracia does something onc in a while.
    Speaking about dwellers of Black Forest, they truly are one of the most balanced factions in game. Lots of shock inf troops, very solid archer unit that can better in melee fights some other inf like Iberians or hillmen, and one of the best cavalry in the game. The only downside of Germans is that they are barbarians. Which means that they won't ever have a good economy, pop growth or law enforcement. And any captured minor city and higher will have cultural penalty until the end of campaign. But they are still very fun to play around with.

    • @jhmmgf4236
      @jhmmgf4236 4 года назад +8

      Alot of it has to do with the fact that all barbarians in the game have settlements that are a fucking joke.Scythia might not even have roads there lmao.Greece Italy Carthage Egypt and the provinces of Jerusalem Antioch etc have the wealthiest cities so money flows :)

    • @-CrimsoN-
      @-CrimsoN- 4 года назад +3

      Scythia went to war with me in my late Macedon campaign. All they did was occasionally raid, but they couldn't do shit because of their crap economy. Scythia would be a much larger threat if the AI played them more aggressively in the early game. Like a Mongol horde. The biggest issue with Scythia is that the AI is so passive and the economy for Scythia just sucks. They have no good land whatsoever. So unless they attack early on, they'll suck for the rest of the campaign with useless land that no one wants. Parthia has the same issue. Good units, but shitty land and a passive AI thats okay with that.

    • @gabork5055
      @gabork5055 3 года назад +1

      One of the reasons is probably that they are surrounded by rebel settlements, which the A.I. doesn't recognise as a threat, so they expand very slowly and ye, the economy is another.
      The latter might also be the reason why historically during 'pre-historic' times (nice oxymoron, heh)some of the Eurasian steppe tribes (or maybe ones related to the Ainu tribes who were in many cases described as 'red-skinned'? Probably both) migrated to America and became whom we know as native-Americans these days.

  • @LyricalDJ
    @LyricalDJ 4 года назад +15

    I also have to disagree with you. Germania is a very strong, versatile faction. Good archers, solid spearmen which you can use throughout the campaign, decent cavalry and excellent shock infantry.
    I found them surprisingly strong against the Roman factions, but it is actually not that surprising when thinking about it. The archers soften up the Roman infantry, the spearmen close the distance and hold the line and then the shock infantry and cavalry just smash the Romans to bits. The biggest advantage the Romans have against Germania is their artillery, but Germanic cavalry can easily take care of those. Played well, roman units can't endure and endure against the heavy damage Germania can inflict.
    I'm not sure if I can pick a favourite unit. The spearmen are the backbone, the night raiders are solid, can easily break hardened enemies while packing a punch and being relatively cheap in upkeep (they do take more money and two turns to recruit), the archers riddle the enemy with arrows, the cavalry provide support and the berserkers and great axes just.. smash.
    Campaign wise - I'd say the most important thing is to develop your heartland. Take the rebel settlements around you early as with your starting settlements they aren't very well developed and they nicely fill out your territory. I consider Vicus Gothi, Lovosice and Bordesholm especially to be Germanic heartland even if the people there don't know it yet. ;o)
    After that the world's your oyster. Keep an eye out on your neighbours, it can take some time to bring together an army so try to anticipate or detect what they're up to. it may be a good ida to take that Britonnic settlement so you cut them off from the mainland. Aside from that and the small starting size of your settlements, one of the issues you may run into later on is the fact that you don't build up cities as much as the Romans and Greeks do. This matters in various respects but especially with regards to public order.

  • @frisianmouve
    @frisianmouve 6 лет назад +67

    Just use armies of berserkers and gothic cavalry and you're set. Too bad you need minor cities for those though, but you should be able to take Alesia or northern italy with spear warbands.
    Berserkers are overpowered against all infantry, but weak against missile troops and cavalry charges and that's where the gothic cavalry comes in to mop those up before the infantry fight.
    After praetorian cavalry and cataphracts gothic cavalry are the best in the game. On top of that they come out with 3 xp, limited cavalry my ass

      @lugotorix6173  6 лет назад +11

      frisianmouve I agree Gothic Cavalry is some of the best in the game. So in the early game there is limited cavalry indeed

    • @frisianmouve

    The Screeching Women are based on the accounts by Marius of the battle of Vercellae, the last stand of the Cimbri).
    As to the bonus vs. elephants (and chariots), that's just what all javelin units have, because of how the Romans managed to counter the Carthaginian war elephants during the African campaign.
    Apparently when swarmed by hundreds of men throwing pointy sticks at it, while keeping out of reach, the elephant don't know where to attack and finally panics.

    I was playing scythia and went to war against the germanic tribes. I realized their spearmen are quite difficult to shoot, you need more arrows than you'd expect to kill a bunch of shirtless men. Their troops are just tougher than usual I guess

    • @421less1
      @421less1 4 года назад +6

      Cool how they captured that element of them. Romans were legit afraid of fighting them. Once they had pushed them past of the rhine they were content to not push across.
      Lots of Roman accounts of fighting the germans is that they were legitimately bigger and stronger humans and could almost offset the technology and equipment.
      The gauls were no joke either but ceasar walled himself in between two gaulic armies. Just would have never been an option with the germans. Ceasar beat them despite them being able to play to their strengths. Plenty of times the germans got to pick their own battlefields and beat roman legions.

Funny thing with my campaign is I had to declare a loss for myself because while I was in the middle of sieging both Briton and Gaul cities, Macedon had somehow conquered all of Greece, held back the Brutii, and conquered all the way to my southeastern city. By the time I built a suitable army and had a good strategy to beat them, Gaul came back from the dead and with macedon fighting me, they took enough of my cities to where I couldn’t keep a suitable army without going negative. Was a crazy way to end the game.

      @@lugotorix6173 no problem :) I've watched most of your guides today and I'm going to start watching your Gaul campaign. Keep up the great work ;)

      sebie tanker Glad you enjoyed the guides, thanks for the support. You're welcome to watch the Gaul campaign but in all honesty it isn't the best campaign on my channel. It was my first ever series and I never actually finished. I would recommend watching either the Scythia or (particularly) the current Greek campaign, as those videos are higher quality. Either way, hope you enjoy!!

      @@lugotorix6173 sure thing, I'll probably watch the Greek one, as they are probably my favourite faction:)

    You are such a little Napoleon with your plans to quickly ruch into British and even Romans. You will not have a strong units to deal with them. Stronger units will be available with larger cities. So you need an economic growth. Yes, there are a bunch of tiny rebel villages, but with the temple of Freya they'll be growing fast. The ones located on the Baltic sea become really profitable because of amber. While you conquering the rebels, British will come for your cities. But they can't do anything to your spearmen! I had an epic win against British in a siege of Trier where 2k of them died from 500 my men! Gauls can often attack you too. But they are also found themselves dead. Then you have to kick British out of the continent and concentrate all the forces against Gauls.

    So, late to comment this. Every unit in Rome total war has a morale stat. If it's below a threshold it's "poor", above it's normal, then good, then very good. Barbarian cavalry is 1 morale above poor.
