After watching this video I immediately ordered this product. I'm going to experiment to the max. I've been obsessed with making my own clothing labels but I didn't want a hundred all the same. I needed the solution to be able to make each label exclusive to each garment. Why, I ask, must they all be identical? Recognition, yes, but they will have plenty of that. I can't thank you enough for this experiment. This broadens possibilities so much in regard to colors, ink, paint, etc. ❤
Seeing your results with the Gelatos was really surprising! I’ve used GAC 900 for years but never considered the Gelatos since they seem so unstable on fabric. I have a lot of them just sitting around. I’m going to give them a try on Gel plate! Thanks so much for this video!
I use the Golden GAC 900 on all of my fabric surface designed pieces that I don't paint with Setacolor or other fabric paint/dye. I find it very effective and is my favorite fabric medium. I also love to be able to use all my "non-fabric-friendly" colour media (like Inktense/watercolour/dry pastels etc) on fabric with the use of the fabric medium. I also like to make sure every piece of painted fabric I make is going to be washable bec the pieces end up in all kinds of different projects. Some will probably be washed, some might be washed, some probably won't be washed, but you never know and I to like to be able to give or sell them with confidence that the colours will stay put if/when washed. V interesting the Distress Oxide still bled a bit when washed. Thanks for taking the time to do and share this experiment.
That’s fantastic! Golden should hire you. I searched and watched their less-than-30-second video on GAC 900 and was flabbergasted at how little they had to offer on it! Your video is so informative. Thank you!
Goodness, I love your videos, they answer so many of the questions that I’m looking for right now! A little idea about the smoking GAC 900, two hours may not have been enough dry time. I always let any painting that I use with textile medium to dry for at least 24 hours.
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain the process, and for describing the different inks. I've learned a lot. I've used water color pencils and an inexpensive fabric medium in the past and was excited how they turned out. This video really encourages me to try the other types of coloring methods with somewhat a more sure feeling as to what I'm doing.
I've ordered the Golden Fabric Medium after watching this the first time. I'm pretty anxious for it to come. I have all those other art mediums that you mentioned so this should be fun.
Julia what a fabulous experiment and how useful for us all. One of the concerns I have is always 'will the colour disappear once washed' - well you have certainly proven the point. I really enjoyed this post Julia thank you so much. Have a fantastic week - I am going on a textiles workshop this week pressing leaves and plants on to fabric so I am really excited as I will be able to use the colours I have with confidence. Love from UK Dorothy xxxxxxxx😘🙋🏻❤️
thank you for sharing, this is so useful when wondering which fabric paints and textile medium to buy. i have been looking at the inktense blocks and now i shall buy them with confidence. many thanks x
Hi Hilary, I'm so glad you found my video helpful. I'm planning another test again with the Golden fabric medium. This time seeing the results when I don't use any medium vs using the medium and washing both samples. It should answer more questions. I'm learning a lot from it:) Have a great weekend. Julia
Thank you for experimenting for us and sharing your results freely!! Great results too! I have always used a bit more medium with acrylic paint. The oxide blows my mind! I can’t wait to try these mediums with fabric!! Neocolors and permanent inks for sure! ❤️ Thanks so much!!
I'm so glad you liked the video! I sure learned a lot and can't wait to do more with the Inktense and Neocolors. I just subscribed to your channel- I love paper crafting! Julia
This was fantastic! I’m going to do this with some more mediums and the different textile mediums I have. I don’t have the Golden but I think they’re all pretty similar 🤞
I do’nt know if you know, maybe the smell while you ironing comes from the formaldehyde. I was reading on a site and it was written over there that this was possible Thank you so much for you’re test video 💐
Hi, Yes that makes sense. It's weird because sometimes it really smokes and smells and other times it doesn't. Thanks so much for watching and happy creating. Julia
That was a great experiment! I've never used that product either. I was disappointed in the acrylic paint result, but I have used a product that worked very well with acrylics before. I'll look for it and let you know what it is!
I've looked for it and can't find it with my fabric paints (where it belongs), so I have either run out or misplaced it. My sewing room is in a disaster right now (I've been reorganizing). If I find it later, I'll come back and tell you about it!
Can you use with watercolor? What about watercolor pencils. I have these, but Is there a medium I should buy that works best? I love the way you add stamping & painting with fabric. I like free motion and have done different methods of applique, but this just adds so much....can’t wait to play! Thank you🥰
Hi Linda, I love using watercolor on fabric! I have had good results but always test first. I use the Golden GAC medium but other brands would also work. I also always heat set it. The watercolor is very staining, it may fade slightly in the wash but I love the look. Here is another video that I did using watercolor on fabric:ruclips.net/video/OE0_aKCgkmA/видео.html Have fun! Julia
This was really helpful, thank you. I'm venturing into doing more fabric painting and trial and errors. Never thought about Gelatos, I have plenty! Now...how about painting on DARK fabrics... this would really change the usage of these various paints. Unless you paint a dark fabric WHITE, it won't show as well. Something to consider for a video test run??? Thanks, Juliana
Hi, Agreed. Darker fabrics are trickier. The paint must be opaque. I usually use acrylic paint with the fabric medium. Laying down a matte white paint first works but it sometimes changes the feel of the fabric. It takes a lot if trial and error. Thanks for watching, Julia
Thank you for your tutorial. I am wondering what makes differences with Golden CAG900 Fabric Medium 100, 200, or 800? 900 seems to work really well as you have shown us. But will the other ones work as well as 900?
Hi, I haven't experimented with the other Fabric Mediums. I will have to give them a try. I'm not sure what the difference is. Thanks for watching, Julia
Might want to try ironing freezer paper to the back of your T-shirt front, if you know what I mean, to stiffen it. That’s what I do with stretchy fabric. And then let it dry for just maybe an hour and peel off the freezer paper and let it dry for 24 hours before you iron it to set it.
Hi Marian, The first fabric medium that I ever had was made by Plaid. I couldn't find it when I went to replace it and someone recommended the Golden. If you are happy with the one you are using-stick with it. Some also use Aloe Vera but I haven't tried it. Happy creating. Julia
Was the fabric hand different between the washed vs. unwashed? It would be interesting to compare a washed swatch that didn’t use the medium vs one that did.
Hi, Yes I thought the same- I will do more experimenting with medium vs. without. I felt the acrylic paint was stiff on both samples however I used really cheap craft paint. I'm not sure if that would make a differences. The others were soft on both samples.
Hi Julia, I kept trying to get a glimpse of your cuff. I assume it's one you needle felted on your embellisher. Now, you've removed it! Question: Did you embroider beads on to it?
Hi Phyllis, I had to rematch the video to see what cuff I was wearing HaHa! This one I made from a thrifted leather belt. I used red and blue acrylic paints and added some stamping with various rubber stamps and permanent inks. I do add beads to my needle felted cuffs. I will be getting my embellisher out soon! Thanks for watching. Julia
I want to buy the Golden textile medium , but I saw a video where someone used aloe Vera gel ( thinned slightly with water) have you tried this method? With the inktense pencils. If so , which in your opinion do you like better ? Thank you for your videos!
Hi Rita, I have not tried the aloe Vera gel, but I know people who do. I wonder if it helps with color fastness. I will have to experiment. Thanks for watching! Julia
Hi, I have not tested on silk. Like cotton, silk is a natural fiber and absorbent. Taking an educated guess, the results would be similar on the silk. It would be best to test! Thanks for watching. Julia
Yes I used regular laundry soap and put it in with a load of towels. It's always a good idea to test first before doing a big project. Everyone's water etc is different. Thanks for watching. Julia
Nice job! What a clear demo with very helpful explanations. Thank you so much for this. GAC 900 here I come!❤
Glad it was helpful!
Finally ,someone not only answered my question about washability but showed me. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I initially did the test because I was curious. I'm glad I filmed it!

This is a great, we can use what we have and don't have to run out and it something that sits forever and forever...... be for we use it! Great video!

Thanks so much Julia, this vid is very informative and I learned alot about the different types of colors.
Wow! Those are great results, thank you for doing this.
Thank you for this video - I used to paint on fabric and now this year brings me to start up once more.
I am making my first "quilt" and I am so grateful for your video thank you!
I've ordered the Golden Fabric Medium after watching this the first time. I'm pretty anxious for it to come. I have all those other art mediums that you mentioned so this should be fun.
When I see your tutorial I can only say I have to learn English! 😩 (I used the 😏 translator)
Precioso todo lo que haces!!!
😍😍😍😍😍
Thanks so much for watching! Julia
great info, thanks for taking the time to DO this and to film it. YAY!
Thanks for the in depth comparison!
Thank you for sharing Julia, you are so generous. I just discovered you a couple of days ago and I am hooked!!

It wokld be cool to see the mediums sampled without the gac too
Great thank you so much for this video. Lots of great info.
Thanks so much for watching- I learned a lot too!
Thanks for doing this. Very informative.. I am working on an art quilt and want to use my neocrayons with confidence.
I'm intrigued by your art quilt! I haven't started quilting yet- I know I will get hooked and never get anything else done LOL! Thanks for watching.
Great video!

Question: Can I use an embroidery hoop to keep a section taut while painting? Can I use one without stretching my shirt out of shape?
Hi, I have never tried using an embroidery hoop when painting.

@Matty06001 great tip- thanks
Hi Julia, would mod podge do the same thing? It too is called a medium?
TFS.....great news !!!
Ai've been using the textile medium by Plaid Mod pod get. Wonder if Golden is worth the bigger price.
Hi Marian, The first fabric medium that I ever had was made by Plaid. I couldn't find it when I went to replace it and someone recommended the Golden. If you are happy with the one you are using-stick with it. Some also use Aloe Vera but I haven't tried it. Happy creating. Julia
Very nice video
Thank you so much for watching!
Hi, can you tell me if any of those can be used on synthetic fabrics, like Lycra?
Thank you in advance for your answer ❤️🙏🏻
Hi, I don't think synthetics would work. The fibers need to be absorbent. Thanks for watching. Julia
If this medium is heat activated you wouldn't be able to work with synthetic fabrics as they would melt or burn
What a great experiement
Thank you so much! I was surprised by the results. I didn't think some of them would go through the wash!
Was the fabric hand different between the washed vs. unwashed? It would be interesting to compare a washed swatch that didn’t use the medium vs one that did.

Thanks for taking the time to do this test...have you tried them on blank silk scarves? I wonder if I'd get the same results
Hi, I have not tested on silk. Like cotton, silk is a natural fiber and absorbent. Taking an educated guess, the results would be similar on the silk. It would be best to test! Thanks for watching. Julia
As I am not familiar with the different mediums you used (besides acrylic), can you actually write them into your comments?
Can you just put a towel over it when you Irwin it? I don't have that ironing cloth thing that you have
Great! Thank you :)
Any idea the difference of GAC and a textile medium
Hi, GAC is a brand of textile medium.
I not trying to sound dumb but did you wash with soap?
Yes I used regular laundry soap and put it in with a load of towels. It's always a good idea to test first before doing a big project. Everyone's water etc is different. Thanks for watching. Julia
What brand of acrylic paint did you use please
Apple Barrel
@@stitchesbyjulia thank you :)
