Just finished my 3rd N62 engine,, it has become a more easy job every time, i have seen this job done the conventional way in other shops, and boy this is so much better!!!! I would just add two things that work so much better for me: 1: work with rope ínstead of compressed air, 2: remove camshaft sensors before takin out valve covers, a little tricky but better and easier for the valve covers goin in and out.
P.I. M. With compressed air there are many things that can go wrong, so just before reaching the top dead center I introduce rope to fill the cylinder and then gently compress from the crankshaft, and to lower the valves you only go back a little from the crankshaft, of course to take out the rock arms
That is a very ingenious, well produced kit. Some of the principles involved reminded me of the old factory issue ladder style valve compressor used when the 6cyl M30 engine.
excellent tool .have an 2006 750 ,4.8 liter that needs valve stem seals im getting this kit thank you.this is why i like working on German cars.my boss is going to be happy..no need to remove cams .dealer quoted almost 10 k for this job.
Everyone at AGA is very helpful. They have a CS number where you can ask them or Rich anything to guide you through the process. This job is not for the of . Personally, I had dropped keepers, searched, crawled inside, and on top of the engine, trying to see. One thing I've found that is extremely useful is prep the area with small cloth/paper towels that can catch anything you drop. An endoscope camera is extremely helpful along with small lights to help keep your work area well lit.

An ambiguity with the Keeper Installation Tool exists at about 15:25 into the video. It says to "...remember to have the fat side of the keeper facing up" while the presenter is holding the tool upside down to load it. This is confusing and could mislead a newbie. The keepers must be inserted into the tool with the fat side down, narrow side up so when they are installed on the valve the fat side is up.
I've done this on an N62 in BMW E70 with this tool kit and I can tell you this is a hell of a work. It took me 30 hours net and my hands were oily and bloody like shit. I will never do this without removing the engine out of the car again. I bet I would've been faster if I had done this first.
great tool, good video instruction. i have used this tool and removing the intake is a must on e 60 545i. i was not able to access torsion springs on cyl 4 &8 on the intake side due to the valvetronic set up. after intake removal i was able to use tools .
Pre 96 Ford 4.6L V8s had this EXACT problem. Hard valve seals, smoke, after 100K miles. Amazing how BMW let this happen. I have a chance to get a cheap 7 series with this problem. Smokes like a chimney. Dealer wants like 5K to do it. I thought I was looking at a Ford V8 DOHC engine, down to the beehive spring. The procedure is identical. Ez valve cover removal(crown vics need the evaporator and brake booster out). That compressor tool is awesome. The Ford has 2 primitive tools for intake and exhaust, and you have to use a breaker bar as a lever against the cam and spring while you fish out the keepers(not fun). I bet your tool would work for Ford too, definitely a market for that. Do you sell that part alone? I also use thick rope in the cyl head and bring it up to TDC. Had a bad experience once with air. Also, are the guides usually trashed? That was a not-so common issue with the early Ford SOHC engine. I also like the rope method because you can feel if the valve has play.
Crown Vics DO NOT need removal of booster or hvac box. Also the valvetronic system makes the intake valves more laborious than on the Ford modular V8. Not to mention most Ford applications have half the number of valves. All BMW N series 8's have 32 valves with crappy seals.
Setting up to do this work. Questions about the air: where does it actually enters the engine and how much pressure? Hose fitting thread size? Thanks for the help !!
Hey AGA guys, i just bought this kit to do valve stem seals in my X5 ´06, but neither in this video or the instructions that came with the kit it says how many psi of air pressure into the cylinders, would you be so kind to reply?
You mention replacing the lifters "if they are bad". Given that there are 32 of them and they cost $25~/lifter how do I tell if any particular one is bad? I have a 745i with about 105k miles on it and it occasionally smokes and regularly throws P0492 even after using your Secondary Air Cleaning tool - no complaints on the SAC tool as it worked great but the valve stem seals are still forcing the code (which is always P0492).
Bill Riffert The P0492 DTC is not related to the valve guide seals. it is a conditional code for sec air flow to bank 2. The plastic air pipe sometimes cracks and on occasion I see that the fittings detach from the air valves at the back of the heads. If you're positive that the sec air piping is in tact, then more than likely you have clogged ports. The chemical and brush kits you see on the internet will work *sometimes* The permanent fix to this problem (if clogged ports is your problem) is to manually clean them. So either remove the heads individually or remove the engine assembly. the latter is easier and should be cheaper. if the heads are removed, then the exhaust valves need to also be removed. I don't suggest this route as its tremendous work. good luck wherever you may go.
the purpose of this tool kit is to be able to do it with the engine in the car. I would have preferred to see it done like that cause this doesn't really show the difficulties associated with that. it was still an informative video though, thanks.
We did do a video of the engine inside the car, but the number one complaint was viewers couldn't see certain angles. We had to recreate the video such as this so folks can see the procedure.
I have a 2010 550i and about 6 months ago I started having intermittent smoke happen only if idling for a while. It's been eating up a lot of oil over the last year as well. I just had a BMW dealership estimate the cost of valve guide seals repairs and I was quoted $14,248.24. WTF?!!! That's 40 hrs of labor and $5100 in parts. The repairs are more than what my BMW is worth.
@@JohnThomas-yf3gw I'd definitely get it repaired for $2500, but I wouldn't know who to ask much less trust that they could do the job without ripping me off. +Ribhi Kamal Get your engine really nice and hot by driving the car for about a half hour, then park it and let it idle for about 15 minutes without touching the gas pedal at all. Now go in the car and give it a quick wide open throttle for a split second. If you have a bunch of smoke coming out with that burned oil smell out your tail pipe you know you have this problem. This is a good way of telling before it becomes so bad that it's always smoking.
Thanks Bruce, that actually worked. By worked, I mean that I actually had the problem. I let it idle for a few minutes with the crank case ventilations closed and then I floored.

After installing the valve stem seal, along with the keepers, why is the air pressure relieved if you are going to compress it again to install the rockers? What is holding the valve up? Just the valve stem seal? Hope that makes sense lol. Just a bit confused.
Yes, the seal has enough tension to keep the valve up. If you don't relieve the air, you can't compress the valve and spring to install the rocker arm.

Had my bmw X5 5.0I in the shop this week has 93 miles on it is a 2013 drinks 1.0l oil of 450 miles they told me my valve steam seals are bad took them 4 days to do it gave me a brand new 2019 loaner and BMW of North America paid for it all was covered under the class action suit for oil consumption
Sisto Montoya Jr. make sure your car is registered with bmw of North America then go to your dealer and complain of oil consumption the can contact bmw and everything else is up to them good luck
What about checking the valve guide clearance?? BMW has released videos in the past for the N62 and checking the clearance. We have seen several N62 with worn guides, if your guides are worn you will be in for a nasty surprise down the road when the valve seal starts leaking again. A short cut like this is a true life saver, but it is somewhat risky. Could save the day if the guides are in good condition though.
Brent, after extensive R&D and doing many N62 valve stem seal (We did 142 valve stem seal jobs in 2016), the guides are usually never worn. Our highly experienced tech do test to see if the guides are bad, but out of the 100 cars we have done, only 1 needed guides.
I was under the impression the valve guides in the E62 are not replaceable. The online BMW factory shop service manual I found (European version) showed replacing the valves when the stem to guide clearances gets sloppy, suggesting strongly the the stems wear but not the guides themselves. What is the reality here?

This kit is expensive to rent and a pain in the ass to use. You only need a long socket that fits the width of the spring. In the inside of the socket you glue a strong magnet that won't be in the way and hit the valvepin once you hammer easily on the socket. The magnet inside of it will catch the lockers so it has to be strong enough to suck the lockers so that they don't fall into the engine. After you change the seal you take the spring and compress it and put a stripe on each side while spring being in a compressed state. Don't stripe it all the way to the bottom because then then it won't lay flat on the seal. When you have the spring and the lockers in place you just cut the stripes and remove them out of the way and you are done 👍
I`m confused. I have issue with my car and cannot figured out if it`s bad head gasket or valve stems? My symptoms are white smoke in idle for like -2-3 mins. Usualy white smoke should be head gasket.
TheFreeg8407, That is incorrect. White smoke blowing out of the exhaust is a tell tale sign of bad valve stem seals. The stem seals are deteriorating, causing oil to get into the combustion chamber, causing white smoke. If you have any questions please feel free to call Rich at 760-738-4084. You may also email us at rich@allgermanauto.com
@Sisto Montoya Jr. , no it won't. Sounds like you have bad valve stem seals. Letting the car idle and then revving it is a way to test for bad valve stem seals. If you get white smoke, that's bad valve stem seals.
@@AGATools assuming one doesn't drive in traffic jams so avoids the problem, how long to get from smoke after long idle to smoke all the time and error codes?
Seems like a hell of work, but i do belive if this problem has been going on forvtoo long, it would be better to do it the old fashion way to clean up the valves an seats
Hi, so though this kit isn't made for those engines. However, we have MINI dealerships using this kit for those engines. You have to modify some cam brackets and the compression screw with the foots. We personally don't know the exact details but it can be done.
***** Just so you know, 60-70 psi did the trick for me. 90psi turns the crank. Its also worth to mention that removing all plugs is not recommended since the risk of turning the crank increases. Thank you for the tool. It was very useful.

+All German Auto Hi, Wondering whether you have an equivalent tool for the M62. I like the idea that the cams don't require to be moved, so re-timing, etc., is not required. Brilliant.
@@AGATools bmw it seems designed their latest cars so that when it is time for an oil change you change the engine as well. plastic guides for the timing chain inside a hot engine really brilliant.....
With the engine in the car is faking hard to do it the intake valve spring in back of head is pain in the back, this guy should make a video with the engine in the car
I hate those keepers they are the most frustrating part of doing this job. If you can remove the engine its well worth it time + frustration. Almost done with Bank 1 intake is absolutely a nightmare especially when it comes to trying to snag the keepers back on lol
yup .. just haven't mastered this tool yet .. I guess there are a lot of tricky parts to get into. I'm worried now that I'm finished with bank one that my valve dropped into the cylinder "intake" was able to retrieve it and install properly but now I'm having issues with the valve properly seating .. lost about 10% when putting air into the cylinder. Should i go on ?
Art, the keeper tool does get a bit tricky, but once you know how to put the keepers in, it's a walk in the park after that. With the valve not sealing, was this on intake or exhaust side? Because if it is the intake side, these engines are known to have issues with the valve sealing on the intake side once the rocker arms go back on. What we like to do is finish the intake valve seals and install the rocker arms all at the end.
Having an issue with the intake rocker followers. They seem to pop off the spring with the smallest touch and getting the spring back into place is a serious pain.....any suggestions?
Nice tool, but 1300 USD this is reserved for professionals... I did this job for less than 40 USD with a cheap Chinese timing tool and a universal valve spring compressor.
@@AGATools I’d consider buying some kits for renting out though. Are these tools usable on more than one specific bmw-model? Do you sell the bits needed to use with other bmw-models or even other car brands?

With the tool kit, what is the approximate labor time on an X5? Thank you.
Dan, with the tool for an X5, you are looking at 21.5 hours.
Great Video! Thanks for sharing!
This is GENIUS!!!
Hello!
What is the preasure you put into the cylinder to avoid the valve to fall down into the cylinder, can't really tell in the video what preasure you used.
I have bought a N62 valve repair kit.
Thank you!

Nice job on the video! First Class!!!!
Can this job be done while the engine is in place? Do you ship overseas to Germany?
Udo, yes you can and yes we do. Please contact us directly by phone or email Rich at rich@agatools.com
Having an issue with the intake rocker followers. The spring that holds them pop out of place with the smallest touch (like putting the rocker back into place after replacing the seal). Any tips on how to prevent this? It is a pain getting them back into place.
Kr0nus, can you please give me a call when you get a chance? I don't quite understand what you are asking. You can reach me at 760-738-4084.

what is the torque for Cam cap nuts

What is the reality here?
do you have someone in the bay area that you partner with here that can do this job.
J Wils,
Unfortunately, we do not have anyone in the bay area. We would be happy to complete this job for you. We can provide a rental car for you while we perform the service. Please give us a call at 760-738-4626 to speak with a service advisor for more details.
Fix Fitness LLC how much on average is this. I need it
Unfortunately, we do not have anyone in that area. You can purchase the tool or have the shop you are working with purchase it to work on your vehicle. Please see the following link. www.agatools.com/tool/n62-valve-stem-seal-tool/collection
If you have any questions you may call us at 760-738-4084 and ask for Richard.
TheFreeg8407,
That is incorrect.
Very cool. Im not to far from escondido. How much to do valve seals on 2008 bmw 750li?
Hey, give our service department a call and ask for Troy, he will give you a better idea of the cost to do this job. His number is 760-738-4626.
Seems like a hell of work, but i do belive if this problem has been going on forvtoo long, it would be better to do it the old fashion way to clean up the valves an seats
@AGATools You may want to let your host know that a "Beamer" only has 2 wheels --- while a Bimmer has 4
Can this tool be used on the mini N12/N14/N18 engines in any way?
Hi, so though this kit isn't made for those engines. However, we have MINI dealerships using this kit for those engines. You have to modify some cam brackets and the compression screw with the foots. We personally don't know the exact details but it can be done.
are you gonna upload a video of baja 1000? Please
Will this kit work on the n73 bmw 760li
Hi Guys! Would this procedure work on a N63 engine (2013 BMW X5) ?
Levar, not this kit but we have another kit. It can be found here: ruclips.net/video/fg3kgBWaGkk/видео.html
how much u guys charge to do the job?
good job for advanced me
How many PSI of air should you put in the cylinder?
***** Just so you know, 60-70 psi did the trick for me. 90psi turns the crank. Its also worth to mention that removing all plugs is not recommended since the risk of turning the crank increases. Thank you for the tool. It was very useful.
Great video thanks
Wish this worked on N12 and N14....
Though it's not a direct fit, people have used this on N12 and N14. Word is, there's a video on RUclips showing this but I haven't been able to find it.
@@AGATools i found someone using it on N12 head, at least on exhaust side. Not sure how it will work with the valvetronic intake side
What is the Price for the n63
5 bucks
I need someone near Lakeland Florida to do this procedure on my 750i.
Amazing video! I’d actually like to buy one of these with bad seals 👍
does this work on m54 engines as well?
No it does not, only on the N62 engines
Why didn't they install the correct seals from the factory.
they want to sell you a new engine for another $10K

Kevin, sounds like you are at the early stages of bad valve stem seals. This issue will get progressively worse and worse as time goes on. You can find out more about our tool on how to replace valve stem seals here: www.agatools.com/tool/n62-valve-stem-seal-tool/collection

Nice 👌
where can i get the n62 kit to buy for my shop
+All German Auto Hi, Wondering whether you have an equivalent tool for the M62. I like the idea that the cams don't require to be moved, so re-timing, etc., is not required. Brilliant.
Great pity, as the scale would make it viable, I am sure. Thanks for your response.
Available in uae
This is what I hate about BMW. Why are they plagued with these kind of issues? Can't BMW engineer something with a little bit of foresight?
Every manufactures have their fault. If every car was perfect, we mechanics will be out of jobs!
Somebody has to pay my mortgage friend! 😆
@@AGATools bmw it seems designed their latest cars so that when it is time for an oil change you change the engine as well. plastic guides for the timing chain inside a hot engine really brilliant.....
Damn good video.. I dont have the problem.. but damn good video
I'd like to se anyone do this with engine in the car! I can see the pain in my back soo bad :) Beside that, very good instruction video!
94meriks I did it no problem and it was 1st time fixing a car also
Carl James lol i need help
I HAD SAME PROBLEM IN 545i and 745l I FIXED BOTH THEM IN 5$$$$$$$$
Time to reduce the crazy price, utmall makes a kit for $125

dam, I bet you can replace the valve stem seals with your eyes closed.
With the engine in the car is faking hard to do it the intake valve spring in back of head is pain in the back, this guy should make a video with the engine in the car
Carlos, with the engine inside the vehicle, the cameraman won't be able to get certain angles of the engine to show you what is needed to see and do.
I hate those keepers they are the most frustrating part of doing this job. If you can remove the engine its well worth it time + frustration. Almost done with Bank 1 intake is absolutely a nightmare especially when it comes to trying to snag the keepers back on lol
Art, have you used our valve keeper tool? If you haven't, you are missing out!
yup .. just haven't mastered this tool yet ..
This happened on the left bank / bank 1on intake cylinder 4
Having an issue with the intake rocker followers. They seem to pop off the spring with the smallest touch and getting the spring back into place is a serious pain.....any suggestions?
it's the little things that over engineered German engines always mess up on
It is big secret 😱😱🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫
Nice tool, but 1300 USD this is reserved for professionals... I did this job for less than 40 USD with a cheap Chinese timing tool and a universal valve spring compressor.
Gotta love saving money!
@@AGATools I’d consider buying some kits for renting out though. Are these tools usable on more than one specific bmw-model? Do you sell the bits needed to use with other bmw-models or even other car brands?
