Hey Emmy you do realize that you can reuse the canisters if you can get the heating element which is available at some outdoor/camping shops (they have it but you need to ask) then you can make your own dishes in there whatever you like it's a good-sized pot which is amazing. I bought something similar but they didn't come in that size they came very tiny but you could still buy the heating element to heat up in whatever canister you happen to have but they never have any thing that size that is cool that is really cool I'd reuse those just saying. I'd reuse those pots that you getting there I would not throw them away their recyclable, in so many ways.

Hand-warmers like Hotties are (if I recall right) *very* fine iron powder (ie, tons of surface-area) and saltwater (with carbon and vermiculite). Basically, the iron rusts extremely quickly, giving off heat. You throttle the reaction by restricting oxygen.
Anyway, you can get bulk boxes of those for about a buk per heater packet.

Or power outages!! I recently lost power and was thrilled when I remembered I had my little backpacking stove, and the fuel still worked. I was able to boil water. Make instant coffee, and cook my bacon. And other things before it all went bad.

These seem fairly huge / inefficient to carry in your pack when camping.

Instead of using salt, you could pour in concentrated hydrochloric acid and throw in some elemental sodium. Close the lid tightly. And if you want your food truly charred and barbecued you could swap the Sodium for Caesium or Rubidium.

Years ago there was a company that sold self heating cups of soup and coffee in sporting goods stores. The cups were similar to the common single serve microwave cups but taller with the heater built into the bottom. You would pull the cap/sticker off the bottom and click the "button" to activate, then turn it upright a open the top to let steam escape. Haven't seen them in years but I remember the coffee was decent.

I think they went out of business. I used them a lot but they weren't very consistent. About 1 in 4 didn't heat up for me.
