BMW E92 335i Single-Exit Exhaust Sound Clips

  • For the past few months, I had a vision for my car which revolved between making it “sleeper” along with creating a smoother exhaust note.
The “sleeper” part included changing out the 335i diffuser (dual-exit) for a 328i diffuser (single-exit.) Luckily, since I had the MSport bumper, they were interchangeable. So, I ordered one on FCP Euro and everything lined up including the plastic tabs and screw brackets on both ends, though I had to use black zip-ties for the other few holes + brackets between since they’re off of exhaust hangers meant for the 335i’s dual-exit in contrast to the 328i’s single-exit. This meant they didn’t line up enough to thread screws back through, which the zip-ties helped solve
The smoother exhaust note part included converting the axle-back section of the VRSF Race Exhaust to one 4” outlet along with a Vibrant Ultra Quiet (1144) resonator before the cross-member plate underneath. N54’s, S55’s, and S58’s are known for not really having a “smooth” exhaust tone due to the design of the twin-turbo system in contrast to N55’s and B58’s with their twin-scroll/T4 manifold runners being equal length which is why their sound is crisp. But, with having ARM catless downpipes and Viv V3 19t turbos, which have a slightly bigger turbine size over stock, this all ended up being the perfect combo for a “smooth” note + clean spool noises.
All that ended up being bought and used to make this possible was the resonator itself, a stainless steel 3.5”-4” adapter piece, a stainless steel 4” ID/OD 90* mandrel-bent elbow piece, and about 3ft total of stainless steel 4” ID/OD exhaust piping. The resonator part was easy, but the axle-back was tedious. The most important thing is to start the adapter piece right underneath the axle housing, and then fine-tune the elbow piece from there. The 90* will be plenty to work from, along with the 3ft of exhaust piping for the best mocking before trimming for the finished product. It’d be slightly easier to angle if you kept the 335i-style rear, but I wanted an OEM+ look which resulted in using the 328i diffuser…it’s doable, but the angle of the pipe that you see is pretty much the only way it’d properly fit. I think it turned out great though, and it continues to grow on me.
As for the clips, it begins with a cold start, though I have cold start noise reduction enabled through MHD which keeps it tame. Then, some revs. After, a quick cruising clip to show off the note at that rate + the spool noises from the turbos. Last, an AI-rendered clip of me doing a run with my friend’s 340i from a 60mph start. For anyone curious, his mods include a DAW Stage 2.5 turbo + supporting bolt-ons on a 26psi E50 map by Sameh, along with a custom Sutphin ZF8 flash. For me aside from the turbo + exhaust setup mentioned, I have the supporting bolt-ons as well, on a 23psi E40 map by JSR Tuning (no water/meth or port-injection.) It was a great run, but also the best sound clip you’ll probably get up-close as I’m full-throttle and going through gears which is why I included it.
Thank you for watching/reading, and I hope this helps.

It’s definitely worth it, glad I could help possibly push you closer in that direction!

Sounds awesome! I have a similar setup right now, but 3.5 all the way back to a vibrant muffler. And its currently in the process of getting 19ts.

Thank you! I see, I’m sure it sounds very clean! 19t’s will help since they’re obviously bigger, so you’ll definitely tell a difference in exhaust note. Just be sure to pay close attention between ECS Tuning and Vehicular DIY’s install videos as that’s what I watched to walk me through removal/reassembly. Don’t forget to get good quality 2” inlets along with 2” aluminum outlets so your new turbos aren’t bottlenecked. Hopefully it goes well!

@@ktb_e92 I’ve actually been watching both of them haha, been watching Vehicular DIY for a while now. Also got some ARM inlets to go on. Thanks!
