I appreciate the in-dash screen approach since I do wonder how durable those on-windshield HUD systems are considering they'll be baking in the sun for most of the day in many situations. Perhaps car makers can make the driver-side dash console taller to accommodate closer to line of sight ergonomics & a bigger display
I rented a Tesla recently and was beyond impressed with the technology. I never realized how distracting it is to have a display in front of your steering wheel. I thought all navigation was pretty much the same. I was so wrong! The Tesla navigation is like this video, where you know exactly when to veer or turn, and it's not a static picture. It's what is actually around you. It was crazy asking the garbage cans on the curb and everything else in real time. The self driving mode was a dream. I have sciatic pain, so not having to constantly move my right leg from the gas to the brake was life changing. For the first time in over a decade, I could enjoy driving instead of being tortured with pain. I rented a Model 3. It's a beautiful little car, but I actually prefer my car. I have a Ford Flex Limited. My dream would be my car with the Tesla technology. My seat is a lot more comfortable, and my 3rd row seat is as comfortable as the Tesla back seat. My back (middle) seats are more spacious and comfortable than Tesla's front seats. I walked away from the experience feeling giddy about the technology. I had previously thought my next car would be a Tesla. Then, I started thinking thar maybe I would wait for more manufacturers to come out with electric vehicles so I could find something a little more comfortable. Now I am torn because I want that technology, and I don't know if any other manufacturer will be able to compare. I might just have to wait until I can afford a used model X.
Would AR "Audio" come with an attitude (i.e driving direction tells a driver to make a say left-turn then gets louder as the vehicle is getting closer and eventually scream at the driver if the turn is missed)? Some GPS system today would insist on "Please Make an U Turn" for several blocks while some others will immediately setup an alternate rout, yet some will insist on bring the driver back to that missed turn then continue on ... Personally, I prefer the 2nd then the first to u-turn, definitely hate those that insisted to take me back to where I missed the turn (I tossed one in the past - right out of my window after happened it the 2nd time).
1: Using AR for shopping makes it look like it is still flat. 2. Not a fan of the virtual showroom experience. Still want to touch the car. 3. I can see using AR to show what the car does. But I don't think it can replace the owners manual. However a manufacturer's RUclips page can do that as well. 4. AR or a HUD can help while driving. I am looking forward to that as long as it doesn't take up the entire screen.
Agree, but I think execution will be keep. If it's more cumbersome to use than what we currently have, even an increased online buying apitite won't make these main stream.
It will be interesting to see how manufacturers balance functionality with distraction. We’ll have to see how much information is displayed in the direct field of view as related to the driver’s focus and safe operation of the vehicle.
Interesting video, The owners manual is probably also doomed by the fact that as we switch to glass-cockpits in cars, that the manufacturers can build in help functions in the binnacles, etc. Also, as cars become more complex, the number of user-serviceable systems seems to decline geometrically. Regardless , I would hate to have to refer to the electronic owner’s manual when the batteries are dead or there is no connectivity. I am guessing we’ll see a paper troubleshooting QRG for years to come. However, I do look forward with amusement to being able to ctrl-alt-delete to restart a stalled vehicle.
I can see the benefits but it's really just a crutch for those that can't look at a road sign .DGMW navigation is great but you already have it on your phone and this will add significant cost and another failure point with an expensive repair. Instead of using my phone I'll be switching to a Beeline moto for my motorcycle so I can become more aware and not so reliant on the nav to do it for me.
That's nice to see tech is advancing even in showrooms, but I doubt dealers want that. They want customers in person so they can keep them locked in and pressure them to buy cars with all those hidden fees and extras.
The problem with AR I see is the older drivers like 65 plus will have an issue to adapted to this technology. This will take out more of the skill out of driving make us more lazy and too dependable on electronic adds. Until we can master driverless cars in complex cities especially like London we should wait longer for AR there's too much distraction right now in cars.
Love Cooley videos, as always, but do we really need his zoomed-in face at a different angle every 10 seconds? I get it. He's a three-dimensional being.
Seriously , I have a MDX and there is so much stuff inside . I m gonna get myself a simple car , fix it and that's it . What car ? Don't know , wanna help let me know .
I still have a GMC Sierra with window cranks. #0 years from now they'll still work. I also have a 1939 Ford Panel Delivery with window and windshield cranks, and they still work after 82 years.
meh, just give me a boring reliable car thats cheap to maintain.. all the sensors and cameras mean that a simple fender bender requires the whole front assebly to be replaced and the whole car recalibrated by the dealer
I get you & still drive an old reliable '89 having resisted 'upgrading' to a tech-laden modern car on several opportunities. that said, the high-tech bells & whistles are supposed to help you avoid those fender benders... ;)
Cooley never disappoints.
Cooley never ages!!!
your voice is so professional... one of the best if not the best that i've ever heard on youtube

I live in Tennessee. I thought you were referring to Arkansas when I saw your title
Thanks for another great review. I've purchased a number of new cars in my lifetime... and I always read the entire owner's manual

Am I the only person to wish he still checked the tech?
God father of the car world Cooley

A/R can give a visual aspect to the cars location/space irl via a display on the cluster, so the driver has their first and third person views.

you didn't mention genesis implementation which is very clean and driver friendly
Totally agree on the owners manual issue. Would like them for older cars too.

Are those bumper stickers still available?

CNET better create a wax statue of Cooley!
Great video....

Can AR solve the motorcycle invisibility problem?

We still dont have windshields that have amazing AR for safety and GPS navigation. We dont have MCU tech just yet.

Lord Cooley once again living in 2041
*Why does ol’ boy look off side so much?* I’m gonna start doing that. Half - direct eye contact, half - off to the side.
I love this
Very cool! To distraction as ur driving ?
the off angle camera intro is disturbing lol
It will...
Everyone can thank Pokemon go for this technology if it wasn't for Pokemon go augmented reality would not even exist
Most people just want to buy a normal car without all that garbage .
Seriously , I have a MDX and there is so much stuff inside .
I m gonna get myself a simple car , fix it and that's it .

Why not concentrate on making the car completely self-driving and forget about AR?
Awful ideas… let’s Ad more distractions into a car so, people get into accidents.
meh, just give me a boring reliable car thats cheap to maintain.. all the sensors and cameras mean that a simple fender bender requires the whole front assebly to be replaced and the whole car recalibrated by the dealer
I'll take a horse, less moving parts, reliable, self-driving, just need to replace it every so often.
